Make sure you have the right recipients:
Do your research and ensure that you have the right reporter. If you're business is about hair care and you're sending your press release to the crime beat reporter, you're almost guaranteed to get your release tossed out.
Contact the key media outlets in your area or region (all those newspapers, TV stations, magazines, radio stations and major websites where you know your customers are in the audience).
Then ask for the names and contact information for the reporters and editors who cover the topic your business falls under.
