The Transitions Of Black Hair

Absoultely Beautiful!!!

Just Because Its' Black...Don't Mean Its Nappy

For so many years, and even until this day black people believe that we have nappy hair. And for years, and years we believed that there was nothing that could be done about your (so called) nappy hair... but to use harsh chemicals on hair that was never meant to experience such treatment. And yet these chemicals are welcomed into our home as we would welcome a visiting favorite relative. For whatever reason it seems as if we don't mind the harm that is being done by these chemicals, and really our reaction should be the opposite...we should mind this. The chemicals are doing more harm than good drying out and damaging our beautiful, delicate and different hair. Our hair grows out in a coil and we are trying to use a straight tooth comb on coils. Have you seen a coil lately, well let me post a picture of one for you; to give you a better idea of what we are dealing with.

This is and exmple of our hair spring1%5B2%5D.jpgI know the picture is large, but I am going to leave it this size so that we, you, me can see what our hair looks like. And also that we will never again make the mistake and call our hair nappy. Another thing that we say about one another is the term every nation standing to itself. And yes I was once ingorant too and laughed at our people whose hair looked like that (I am a shamed): But now that I have a better understanding of what the problem is and was, and that the problem can also be fixed, I know longer laugh when I see this:) Whenever you see our hair in this condition, where the coil is coiled so tight, that means that that persons hair is very, very dry and thin and their hair needs to be hydrated (read the article on Hydrated vs. Moisturized). If you notice something about knowledge you can have all the knowledge in the world, but until you understand that knowledge you will not be able to apply it properly. I made the above statement because I want us to began to understand ourselves and apply the knowledge properly.

Madam C.J. Walker had an idea which helped her to gain knowledge to apply a hot comb to straighten out these coils. And that was a God send to a peoople who seemed to have hopeless hair. But the hot comb had a flaw, and that flaw was that it could not repel moisture. If the weather held up you could go two weeks with no chance of rain :) do you remember those days. But if we only had the knowledge of how to take care of our natural hair then and knew the difference between a coils and naps we would be that much further ahead with black haircare.

MP9004445181%5B1%5D.jpg

We can have versatile hair without all the harsh chemicals that damage our hair and strip it of the much needed hydration it need in order to be healthy and have a shine so bright that it would actually brighten up the darkness night. We have to come to know that these chemicals seeps into our blood stream thru our pores and poison our blood. So lets learn, so that we can grow.

Single Wo(men) - Rejoice!

In recent months there’s been a brouhaha surrounding the so-called plight of single black women, arguably spearheaded by Steve Harvey’s best-selling Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man and brought into prominence on the internet by Nightline’s controversial “Why Are Black Women Single” and Helena Andrews’s newly-released Bitch Is the New Black. I’ve read everything from scary statistics to scary solutions and thought I’d offer my input on the topic: single (black) women, don’t despair because relationships and the family that they often engender are not always what they’re cracked up to be.

I love having a husband and children. To have a partner who supports and respects you, who brings out the best in you while reminding you, from time to time, that you’re not perfect, and someone with whom you can laugh often is what a lot of us women – and men – dream of. To discover the divinity of unconditional love that comes with children is a gift I would bestow upon everyone. To be the one person a young child comes to for comfort when she’s sick or scared or just wants to cuddle is validation that you’re doing something right.

However, marriage and motherhood come with a downside so steep I sometimes long for the advantages I had when I was single. Below are the five most important things I traded when I lost my single status.

1. Uninterrupted sleep. At least my kids don’t sleep through the night. When one wakes up for a drink of water, you wake up to give it to her. When you realize that the body lying next to you is not your partner, you have to get up and put said body (sometimes kicking and screaming) back in its own bed and sit there until it falls asleep. I’m a light sleeper so when my husband breathes too loud or, heaven forbid, snores, I’m wide awake staring at the ceiling. He pulls the comforter off me and rolls it around his heavy body so that I wake up … cold. When all this happens as often as it does in our home, you’re exhausted, and you still have to get up at 6:45 the next morning and drop the
one child off at school and give your undivided attention, all day, to the one who’s at home. They don’t understand, nor do they care, that Mama’s tired. They want Mama to take them to the playground or color or play with their dolls. That’snot to imply that single women always get their eight hours a night. The difference is that the latter is usually by choice. You stay up late to polish
that presentation that might get you that promotion. You were with your girls until 3:00 am talking and laughing and having a good time. You wanted to watch the end of the late movie or you were on FaceBook way too late.

2. The right to be sick. When I was growing up, I heard my mother say that with young children you can’t even be sick. This is one of the hardest parts of parenthood. Whether you have the flu or a bad cold, when you’re sick, all you want to do is sleep, or at least lie on the couch and watch crappy TV. When you have a family, you have to keep going. The deal that my husband and I made when I left my job to work at home as a freelance writer and editor was that I would be the primary care giver. And it made sense. We depend primarily on his income, so he can’t up and leave work when the kids are sick. As his parents live over an hour away and as my parents live in America, when I’m sick I still have to go on. Lunches have to be made, milk has to be poured.

3. Time. My days are not fully my own although working from home has provided me with an enviable degree of control over my own schedule. However, having a family takes a good deal of that control away. Even before I had children, I couldn’t just not come home after work. If at the last minute I wanted to have drinks with my colleagues after work, I had to let my husband know. I always had to work with his schedule, and vice versa. It’s not just my week-end anymore. If there’s
something I want to do in the evening, personal or professional, I need to make sure my husband’s going to be home on time and vice-versa. There are no more spontaneous road trips to be had. Dinner has to be done by 6:00 in order to get the kids in bed by 7:30. Now my oldest has her play-dates and sports activities and so forth, and who gets to cart her around? And on whose time? Gone are the days when I could roll out of bed at 10:00 on a Sunday morning and pick up a doughnut and coffee on my way to spending the afternoon rollerblading around the streets of DC.

4. Individuality. This can be as banal as decorating your house or apartment exactly the way you want it with the furniture you picked out. It’s as mundane as leaving a stack of papers on the table before you go to work and finding it at the end of the day in the same place as where you left it. It’s
dealing with your own messiness and watching what you want on TV every night or choosing the movie you want to see every time. It’s about doing what you want to do without consulting with anyone or worrying about the long-term affects it’s going to have on your relationship or your children.

5. Being responsible for myself. This sums up the previous four points and is this simple: when I get up in the morning, I’m automatically responsible for three people. Sure, my husband helps me with the morning routine, but even with help, I’m responsible for getting myself and two children dressed, fed and out the door on time. If we go to my in-laws’ for the weekend, I have to pack and unpack for three people. If we go out for pizza, I have to think about sweaters and pull-ups and menu choices for three people. When I buy groceries, I have to consider that my husband always wants to eat meat and that my children don’t want to eat veggies. I can never go anywhere empty-handed; I’m either carrying a child or my children’s stuff. The family car, i.e. my car, is always full of crumbs and my husband is always reminding me that it needs to be cleaned.

I wouldn’t want my life to be any different than it is right now, and when these frustrations take the forefront of my daily thoughts, I balance them with the joys that come with my lifestyle choice. I don’t have too many regrets about how I’ve lived my life or the decisions I’ve made save this one: I wish that while I was single I could have embraced being responsible only for myself. The one piece of advice I’d like to give to all you single (black) ladies is to be where you are. Take stock of what you have right now and spend as little time and energy as possible on the illusions created around relationships and families. They’re not always everything they’re cracked up to be.

12 Ways Adult Students Can Pay for College:

1. Maximize your federal aid eligibility by reducing assets and paying down consumer debt.

2. Submit the *FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st. You don't have to wait until you are admitted to a program to apply! This application also serves as the application for the *Workforce Improvement Grant, a scholarship awarded to adult students based on financial need.

3. Research and apply for scholarships early. Scholarship deadlines can occur as early as six months prior to the semester for which they are intended!

4. Utilize community programs that offer assistance with childcare, rent, utilities, food, clothing, fuel, prescription medicines, and medical or dental care. This allows you to use money for college that would normally pay for these other items.

5. Ask about fee waivers. Many colleges will reduce or waive admission application, testing, or other fees for low income students.

6. Ask about tuition payment plans. Many colleges offer tuition or deferred payment plans.

7. Accelerate your degree program by taking college level proficiency exams, such as *CLEP or *DANTES, or departmental exams. Ask about the possibility of receiving credit for paid work experience, professional licensure, certification, military service or other training.

8. If you are working toward a bachelor's degree, consider taking general education courses at a *community college where tuition is generally much lower.

9. Take advantage of distance learning opportunities in lieu of traditional campus-based classes where possible. Tuition for these classes is often much less.

10. Reduce the cost of textbooks by borrowing them from someone who has already taken your class or borrowing them from the library. If you must buy books, shop online for the best price or buy used books. At the end of each semester, sell them to other students or online instead of taking them to the bookstore.

11. Explore Tuition Assistance Programs (TAP) offered to employees of larger corporations.

12. Take advantage of federal tax benefits, such as the Hope Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit.

Twitter Flies

Flies. They walk over s**t. They trample through carrion. Their babies are maggots. I know they’re God’s creatures. I know they have a purpose. I know they have as much right to life as I have. But. I hate flies. I abhor them. I despise them. I kill them.

Unlike spiders, flies do their best to announce their presence. They fly recklessly around the room, eventually two centimeters from my face always at eye level. And they buzz. Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Twitter for me is like a fly. All day long tweople buzz their quotes from Ghandi and the Dalai Lama around the head of the internet. They recklessly toss their products and free offers in my face, whether I want them or not. They fly around my home space and stop to show off the long trains
of conversation they’re privileged to have with this celebrity or that entertainer. They distract me with insignificant news of being stuck in traffic or of how busy they are buzzing in their followers’ ears.

As an independent publisher, I know only too well that Twitter is a necessary tool that can empower someone like me who’s responsible for establishing her own reader base. After I’ve posted this piece on my blog, I’ll head straight to Twitter to inform those who are following my tweets of its existence. When I read an enlightening article from a Muslim woman on wearing a naquib, I retweeted. When my book is released, I will announce it. I do indeed have a powerful, ready-made venue at hand for spreading my messages. But at what point does a tweeter become as pesky as my friend the fly?

A celebrity that I USED TO follow repeatedly tweeted her request to increase her reach to 10,000 followers. She tweeted a message that went something like this:

“I follow hundreds of people who don’t follow me. People, why aren’t you following me back?” Is there a magic number of followers you need to interest sponsors and advertisers? Is it to prove how popular you are? I used to follow another person who’d save up at least 10 inspirational saying
just so she could tweet them at the same time, in succession. If I want to be reminded that “early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” I’ll read up on my Benjamin Franklin.

I love the tweets that link useful writing tips. I love links to articles that teach me something about another culture. I forward articles and link to blogs that show black women doing something creative and positive with their time here on earth. I’ll check out the websites of twitterers of quality. I may even buy their products. Quantity is just that, and I won’t waste my time following up on someone who buzzes about waiting in line to pump gas or about how delicious organic apples are.

We’ve become so obsessed with numbers that we’ve lost sight of what they really mean. My understanding of Twitter etiquette is that if I follow someone, s/he’ll follow me back regardless of who I am or what I might stand for. Chances are, s/he will never know about my writing process or about my daily life as a black woman living abroad or about how I overcame the
limitations of my identity. Therefore, s/he will not read my book. So what’s the point? I may lose a follower or two or a hundred. But, then again, I’d rather communicate with people who are actually willing to listen to my message than simply be an irritating fly in their ear.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I have to admit once upon a time I was a bit skeptical about any link or information I would receive pertaining to business grants. Mostly because when I did reach out to find grants most of the time I would be prompted to pay $79.95 or some unreasonable amount of money to receive the information about a supposedly FREE Government resource! It all seemed counterproductive and honestly "scammy" (made up word of the day)

Flash forward--as I've been re-vamping my accounting and bookkeeping business from outside my back yard and into the mainstream, I've been discovering many unknown "gems" and resources available for existing and aspiring business owners and you know what? They're LEGIT!

Getting grants from these places may not be as simple as asking, you actually have to build a business plan and pitch your idea to them, but the beauty of it all is that that is it. In the wake of the economic crisis, recession and just historical knowledge, many organizations are realizing that minorities and women of color in particular aren't catching up in numbers to their white counterparts as successful entrepreneurs and urban dwellers are still left to their own devices when seeking to established businesses. Access to capital still remains an issue!

Check out this post to discover 3 resources that may help you on your journey to business success!

Are You Registered?

Ladies, we are the wave of the future. We are momas, sisters, grandmothers, nieces and CEO's! It's time we take our business to all the the levels that our male counterparts do. Why not? We do everything else together..AMEN, wives??

As the wave of the future, we need to register our business with Registered Black. Am I knocking our sisters of another nationality, race, creed, or color? No, but its time we stand at the head of the LINE!

I ask you, are you registerd?

What if there were a way to put those Social Networks, Micro-Blogs, and YouTube Videos to Real Life Use by creating Real Customers, Affiliates, and Business Partners that could pay you an Instant Income for each new registration?

Now MLM is one thing, but effective networking is another. My recent saying in the business industry is you GET what you pay for and if you expect everything to come to you for free, well you are going to get spam, weirdos, fake customers and many headaches.

What does registering black mean for you? It means you are stepping up to the front of the line in your blue business suit, with 5 inch heels, carring the word and standing on it.

So, lets get on this together; 2010 is half over....what are you going to do differently?

Well, register black today.
