Fired @ 54, not supervisable!

I went after a job in a place where I believed I could make a difference providing a service to Black people, my people that I feel most connected to. The revolutionary side of me is passionate about affecting social change and making a difference. All fired up after finally completing my undergraduate degree I was idealistic and proudly anticipating working at a Historically Black College. My intent was to connect with African American parents and students to assist them in securing funding through Financial Aid effectively as someone who understood the anxiety they may have been experiencing. My belief is that I understood the challenge of feeling intimidated and overwhelmed but together we could come up with a plan that worked to the advantage of the student and parent and secured their admission, tuition, and housing requirements. The work proved to be more than challenging and even though I anticipated it to be difficult I expected to be trained well enough to meet the challenge. A very wise woman that had been in the industry for almost 30 years taught me as much as she could in between the demands of her own student load and time lines. The office operations were flat and loosely structured and the environment was highly charged by politics and big egos. When I needed help I would go to my co-workers and make every effort to get the right answer for the best outcome. In almost every instance, I received a different answer no matter who I went to. Seasoned individuals performed procedures the way it has always been done like before computers became the focus. It was effective in its time although time consuming. Fairly new professionals performed procedures in whatever way allowed it be done the fastest. Mistakes were made but time lines were met most of the time.Read moreOmitunde, Publisher of African American Family ConnectionAn online magazine about African American Family values and community.Visit AAFC for the latest issue each month and a copy of "The Ripple Effect".

Creative PR

I love coming up with ways to get the word out about my business. Back when my partner and I started the doll company we didn’t have any money so I had to be creative. To this day I still love to be creative and from being creative I was able to get over $25,000 in free publicity for our company. I almost went into the Public Relations field and sometimes I think I should have because I think I am kind of good at it. Anyway I know that most of you know that I recently released my film RISE: An Entrepreneurs Journey To The Top. Before I shot the film I started thinking of all of the ways that I could market the film. So what I want to do right now is share with what I did as part of my PR campaign and maybe you can use it or something similar in your business.I made a list of business and women magazines. I then ordered a case of popcorn and packaged the popcorn with the DVD and my press release in a big envelope and sent it out to the editors of the magazines. I will let you know how that went, because I just did this. When it comes to getting the word out about your company you have to come up with a strategic plan and be creative. PR is one of the best ways to get your name out there. I know a lot of people talk about advertising, which can also be good, but most people will believe in your product much faster if they see a story about you in their favorite publication or on the news. I remember when I was on the John Walsh show. That was amazing because the show was national, so family members all the way down in Georgia saw me. That boosted the company so much and our credibility. It was around that time I decided to write the books about starting your own business, because so many people started coming to me about learning how to start a business and I figured now was the best time for me to get the book out there to piggy back off of the momentum I had going.Until Next TimeMuch SuccessAudreyAudrey is a business coach and the author of The Sister Inc. Building Expert StatusBy Audrey Bell-KearneyWhen you are in business you want people to look at you as an expert in your field. If you are just starting out you may not see yourself as an expert yet. There is a way to build this status and you can do so by writing. You maybe saying what am I going to write? If you are doing something that you love and it is your business and your passion, I am almost sure that there is something that you can write about to help you start to build your status as an expert. Here are few ways to build expert status very easily.1. Write a column on your subject for a local paper. Most local papers are looking for good content and you will be surprised how easy it is to get your article published. If the article is really good you may even get your own column.2. Write articles and submit them on the Internet to article directories. There are thousands of publishers out there looking for good content for their website or their online newsletter so what you have to say may be of some interest to thousands of readers on the Internet.3. Set up a blog and start writing about what you know. This is a great way to build expert status and to also get others involved with the conversation when they leave comments on your blog. The key to blogging is to blog consistently. This means that you should be blogging at least once a day and even more if possible.4. Publish a report. You can create a report about something pertaining to your industry. The report does not have to be more than 24 pages. Your report could be your observation about a specific topic.5. Write a book. This is one of the absolutely best ways to become an expert. When you become a published author you are looked at differently and receive a different kind of respect and you will feel wonderful to have accomplished something as grand as writing a book.I do all of these methods and more. You don’t have to do them all at one time, but if it is important for you to become an expert in your field you should definitely try a few of these.Until Next TimeMuch SuccessAudreyAudrey Bell-Kearney is the President of Sister Inc Network and the author of The Sister Inc Blueprint For Starting And Running A Successful Business. Don't Be The Last One To The Party

By Audrey Bell-KearneyAs a business owner one of the keys to success is having a great marketing plan that is working. There are so many ways to market your business it is impossible to do them all, unless you have a team working with you that you can delegate to. I try to practice about 5 marketing techniques on a regular basis and I will share them with you.1. Article writing2. Blogging3. Publishing an Internet newsletter called an e-zine4. Sending out press releases5. Flyer and post card distributionRecently I got into using video to market my business and this is a great way to get your name and your face in front of potential clients. I know some you maybe thinking I don’t have a clue about how to use video and I will tell you it is as simple as buying a web cam or Flip video. Figure out what you want to say and record. Once you record you can upload your video to the Internet in a matter of minutes. A note here; make sure that your video is no longer than 10 minutes. Most of the video sharing sites will let you upload only 10 minutes of video footage. This process is so simple that my 9 year old niece can do, so I know you can. There are so many places out there that you can upload your video. You can actually have your own TV show right on the Internet. I’ve video on my website, I video on my social networking pages and my TV channel on a few of the video sharing sites. You owe it to the success of your business to check this technique out. Don’t Be The Last One To The Party.I will be holding a workshop on Internet marketing in October. If you are interested in attending please email me and I will send you more information.Until next monthMuch Success.AudreyAudrey Bell-Kearney is the successful author of The Sister INC.
