Few Woman-Owned Firms Looking AbroadA survey finds women business owners aren't making the most of the global marketplace.By: Ana Patricia FerreyPublished June 26, 2008Woman businesses owners aren't taking full advantage of the global marketplace in the competition for corporate clients, according to the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. In a recent survey of more than 400 woman-owned businesses across the United States, only a few placed India among their top five suppliers for goods and services, even though it was cited as a leading outsourcing country by larger corporations, the Washington D.C.-based advocacy group said. By contrast, most survey respondents cited Canada as their top supplier.Joan Kerr, chair of the group's global committee, said India's dominance as a supplier for larger companies should prompt more U.S. women entrepreneurs to look at the country as an important resource."The study produces clear evidence that women's businesses must think creatively about partnering or buying abroad to win corporate clients," Linda Denny, the group's president and CEO, said in a statement.http://www.inc.com/news/articles/2008/06/womenbiz.html?partner=rss-alert

How to Create a "Media Buzz"

No one’s going to know anything about you do unless you tell them. You have to “create a buzz.” What does that mean? It means you have to market yourself in such a way that creates attention to you and visibility. How do you do that?Promote Yourself. Don’t Be Shy. If you want to be recognized for what you do you have to promote yourself. I am a big fan of Press Releases, however, they only work if you know how to write them. As a former News Assignment Editor I can tell you first-hand that an overwhelming majority of releases get tossed by journalists because they are either poorly written, lack newsworthiness or are just plain dull. The headline of your press release should be an attention grabber.Which one of these headlines would make you want to read more?Invite Me Over to Trash Your HouseNew Author Wants to Help You Organize Your HouseIf you’re an author, find a way to tie your book into a current news event. Or better yet, create your own media news event. Romance authors, for example, should always be able to capitalize during the holidays---especially Valentine’s Day.You can also promote yourself thru blogging and connecting to groups and organizations—both on and offline.

25 Ways to Save Money on Gas

With gas prices $4 a gallon, saving money on gas is more important than ever. Fortunately, there are a lot of relatively simple and inexpensive things you can do to save money on gas. What follows is a list of 25 ways to reduce what you pay at the pump.Replace a dirty air filter. According to the Federal Trade Commission, replacing a clogged air filter can increase gas mileage up to 10%.Keep your car's engine tuned. Having your car's engine tuned according to the owner's manual can improve gas mileage by 4%.Get regular oil changes. Clean oil in your car's engine improves gas mileage by reducing friction. You should also look for oil that says "energy conserving" on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute. It contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy.Keep tires properly inflated. Properly inflated tires can increase your miles per gallon by up to 3%.Use the right motor oil. Make sure you use the proper grade of motor oil, which can save you 1% to 2% at the pump.Rotate tires and check alignment. Rotating the tires for even wear will improve your car's performance and gas mileage, as will keeping the car properly aligned.Buy the recommended gas for your car. Most cars run on regular octane gas. According to the FTC, there is no reason to buy a higher grade of gas than what is recommended in the owner's manual.Steer clear of gas-saving gadgets. You've probably read about any number of gadgets that promise to increase your car's gas mileage. Most of these gadgets don't deliver on their promises, and some can even harm your car.Find the cheapest gas near you.Use gas-rebate credit cards. Some credit cards can save you up to 5% on gas. Three of the best cards in my opinion are the Discover Open Road Card (5% cash rebate on gas and car maintenance purchases), Chase PerfectCard MasterCard (6% rebate on gas purchases first 90 days, 3% thereafter), and BP Visa Rewards Card (10% rebates on gas purchases from BP during first two billing cycles, 5% thereafter).Keep it under 60. At speeds above 60 mph, miles per gallon starts to decrease significantly.Avoid jackrabbit starts. Peeling out when the light turns green so you can be the first car at the next red light is like throwing money out the window. Gentle driving can save you up to 5%.Unload. Remove unnecessary weight from your car (no, this doesn't include your spouse). Lightening the load by 100 pounds can improve your gas mileage by 2%.Avoid using the roof rack. Items on top of your car, in addition to weighing you down, increase wind resistance, which lowers your gas mileage.Use cruise control. Using cruise control on the highway when it's safe to do so improve fuel economy.Use air conditioning on the highway, not in the city. If it's hot outside, using the air conditioner on the highway improves gas mileage over rolling down the windows because of air resistance. But in stop-and-go traffic, it's best to let Mother Nature cool you down.Remove snow tires. Deep tread and big tires consume more fuel. When winter is over, remove the snow tires for better gas mileage.Telecommute. For many, it's the commute to and from work that burns the most gas. Telecommuting even one day a week will reduce those costs 20%, will reduce wear and tear on your car, and save lots of time, too. And telecommuting is a great way to start what I like to call slow-motion retirement.Work four 10s or nine nine-hour days. If your boss isn't too keen on telecommuting, maybe he or she will allow you to work four 10-hour days and take every Friday off, or nine nine-hour days and take every other Friday off.Rideshare. Join a group of friends or neighbors to carpool to work. This can substantially cut down on gas consumption. And if you live in an area that uses high-occupancy vehicle lanes, it can also get you to work faster.Plan errands. We all have errands to run throughout the week and particularly on the weekends. Combine errands so you have to take fewer trips to get your chores done. In addition to saving gas, you'll also save time and aggravation.Walk or bike when possible. More and more people are riding their bike to mass transit or to work. Even biking to work one or two days a week will save a substantial amount of gas.Buy fuel-efficient cars. There are plenty of hybrid and other fuel-efficient cars to choose from.Buy an electric- or gas-powered scooter. These scooters are commonplace in many parts of the world, and their popularity is growing in the U.S. A Vespa, for example, gets up to 72 miles per gallon and has a top speed of 59 mph.Consider fuel-efficient tires. Some tires are designed to increase fuel efficiency by decreasing the rolling resistance of the tire.

Let me say that I love anything and everything that deals with fashion and beauty!!! I just recently found a book that I fell in love with and that expresses some of the art of Fashion and Beauty. The book is called 'Style A to Zoe' byRachel Zoe. She has expressed her love of fashion and style in a book that seems to speak to you as a friend. For those who don't know who she is, she is a world famous Fashion Stylist that has dressed everyone from Joy Bryant to Salma Hayek. Talk about a woman who knows about style!!! She gives many tips about fashion do's and don'ts and explains why you should and shouldn't. I recommend this book to women in the corporate work place as well as to the woman who just wants to be "Glam" for the day. If you are ever in doubt and find yourself in a new place and don't quite know how to dress, consult this book. It has style advice for the Red Carpet, the Jet Set, the Dinner Invite, as well as other opportunites to shine. And for the woman who just wants to look her best, this book is for you too. So enjoy your cup of tea with "Style A to Zoe."

Build a Media Plan

Identify the radio and or television shows you would like to be interviewed on. Listen to those programs so you can get an idea of the interviewing style of the host. Find out the kind of topics he or she tends to focus on to see if you would be a good fit for their show. The worst thing you can do is send an email or media release to someone who focuses on politics and you want to talk about gardening. Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt to let the host know you listened to a particular show and how much you enjoyed it as you pitch yourself as a guest.Don't limit yourself to just the stations in your immediate area. Make sure you cover as much territory as possible. Remember, radio interviews can be done over the telephone. Another thing: If you know you're going to be on vacation in a particular area on a specific date, contact the stations in that market and let them know you'll be available. You don't have to tell them you're on vacation---just that you'll be in the area. And don't be afraid to hype up the fact that the Host is getting a great opportunity to interview you.Know the News of the Day: By knowing what's happening in and around your world, you should figure out how you can tie in your book---especially if you're a non-fiction author. For example: If there's a school shooting in your community and you've written a book young people and crime, call all of the media outlets and offer yourself as an expert.

About a month ago I found seeds in a drawer, California Zinnias. Only growing seeds once before when I was a child in elementary school I decided to give it another whirl.I found a huge pot, retrieved my seeds and soil and went to town. It was a Saturday and my kids helped me, while I planted they washed the car. We were getting our chores done because we had a busy day ahead.I can smell the morning air, the radio is playing, In mere bliss I am singing, dancing and thinking to myself how God is so good to me and in everything I was truly blessed.I soon finished planting and the last step was to add plant food, I did just that and sat her under some sun to start her on the growth process.Days had gone by and if I remember it was by day 5 I saw little stems peaking up from the dirt. She was growing and growing and now a month later she has emerged to surpass the top of the pot. I am excited to see her progression. My Zinnia is on her way to become a beautiful flower grown by my hands. Some days I would water her and right after, out of no where here comes the rain. I would say to the kids “Wow if we would of known the rain was coming we wouldn’t have watered her”.In this entire discovery I noticed in life there will be things that you start out to do on your own, hoping to watch it nurture into a great finish. You will wait, work on it, watch it and water it on your own; often times with vigor, determined to make things happen with your own hands. Then the very Love of God comes in and helps you and sends water to you to help you along without you knowing, without you deserving it, unmerited Favor. Then you will begin to notice the growth of the matter is much valuable, stronger because Gods water is so much greater than our own.In every plan, every child, every business, every house, every relationship any dream that your soul desires to start. Start, Plan, work with zeal and prudence.Water your plant with prayers and His guidance; depend on God to give you the food you need so that you can grow. Proverbs 3 5-7By then the very thing you thought you were unable to do will one day be a California Zinnia.©Positive with Purpose Writings-Rhonda F 2008/6

Flying on the cheap!

The airlines are fighting to stay in business and deeply discounted air fares are about on their way out. However, there are some ways to get a cheap flight so that your vacation does not become a staycation! Aaron Smith, a writer with CNNMoney.com presented five ways to fly on the cheap.1. Fly during the slowest days of the week.Tuesday and Wednesday are the slowest flying days of the week for business travel so demand is low, and so are the fares.2. Fly during the slowest time of the year.Fall is the best time for cheap flights. This ranges from Labor Day until Thanksgiving.3. Fly to popular destinations at unpopular times. My husband and I went to Orlando in September and Disney World wasn't crowded at all!4. Buy during the cheapest times of the day.Airfares change three times a day as airlines periodically lower prices to fill up flights, after midnight and early mornings are the best time to purchase a flight. On the weekend, the best time to check is early Saturday morning and again at 5 p.m., when the industry is most aggressively trying to fill seats.5. Buy a travel package, even if you don't need it.Packages are sometimes cheaper than the airfare alone, especially for last -minute sales, where the airline is just trying to fill seats. I was able to get 2 airline tickets to San Diego and a car using "lastminute.com". This was a super bargain because, though I didn't really need the car and didn't use it much, the price of this package was less than the fare offered for 2 tickets on Southwest. Last minute.com is a featured site on my online travel booking site, Your Imani Travel. So, be creative with your options for now, because believe me, airlines are going to raise their prices and discount fares may become a thing of the past.

Every savvy Black business owner knows that having a professionally designed web site is a must. But what isn’t well known to many is that not just any old web site will due. Your Black business web site is a direct extension of your business. If your web site looks mediocre and unprofessional, well guess what? Visitors to your site will view your Black business as being mediocre and unprofessional.

Here are two key components that every black business web site should have.

Professional graphics and images, because let’s face it - IMAGE IS EVERYTHING! If the graphics or images on your site look fuzzy or distorted then your sight needs a makeover. The graphics or an image on your site does not have to be extravagant but they do need to be professional. The right designer will create graphics for your site that are web ready. Web ready graphics load quickly and have a resolution of at least 72 dpi.

For professional royalty free images that compliment the text of your site you can select from Fotolia.com or Istockphoto.com. These sites provide low cost web ready images starting from a $1 a picture.

Informative and persuasive text – You must capture your visitor’s attention. The text you provide on your site must provide information your potential clientèle will find useful. It must also be presented in an easy to read format. That means using short sentences, bold page titles and paragraph headers, and bullet points. Your visitors are not going to read the text on your site word from word. Nope, they are going to skim your site for the information they need and then move on. So don’t use unnecessary words or provide them with useless information.

Your business features and benefits should be apart of the information you provide. If you really want your black business web site to convert visitors to buyers, you must explain how they will benefit from your service(s) or product(s).

On a Black business site it is not enough just to list your services. Here is an example of giving a feature and telling a potential client what is in it for them.

Example 1: Each site we design includes strong call to action messages that convert more visitors into buyers. More buyers EQUAL MORE MONEY your business web site makes for you.

Once you have captured your visitor’s attention with informative text, it is time to present them with a task to accomplish. Or what is commonly known as a call to action message. A call to action message can be as simple as Call Us Now, Take Advantage Of This Offer Now, Schedule Your Consultation Today etc. We actually recommend using a minimum of two call to action messages per page.

Call To Action Messages should:

· Be placed midway of a page after you have given some useful information or features benefits and again at the bottom of the page.

· Differentiated from the rest of the text on the page by font color, size or boldness.

If either of these two key components is missing from your site, then you may want to consider a web site makeover. Remember your Black business will benefit greatly from a web site that projects a professional image and convinces visitors to use your service(s) or buy your product(s).
