The Great Mothers Embrace

(Taken from The Sanctuary of the Open Heart Newsletter

A Letter to you From the Great Mother.

Beloved One,It is time to come inside. It's getting dark earlier now, and the wind has a chilling bite to it. Come in, and get cozy by the fire. That's right, curl up in the easy chair and get comfortable. Here's a steaming mug of chai and something yummy I've just pulled out of the oven. Feeling better now?My dear, have I told you lately just how proud I am of you? This year has been a doozy, to say the least! Chock full of all kinds of unexpected surprises and challenges. And you've made your way through it all with such grace and wisdom. I couldn't have done it better myself. ( As they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!)

Through Spring's exuberance, Summer's expansiveness, and Autumn's flurry of activity, I've watched you stay rooted in your heart-knowing and guided by your feelings, your intuitions. And now, after all that DOING, the time has come for you to simply BE (E), where your soul can have a well-deserved rest. You know, this season of inward reflection and dreaming is your birthright. However, only YOU can claim it for yourself!

It's been so inspiring to see you release that which no longer serves, like dry leaves flying into the swirling vortex of wind, showing such courage to know what to hold onto and what to let go of. You've been inwardly active these past moons preparing for the winter: taking stock, harvesting the fruits of your experiences, stockpiling your strength and preserving your power, all of which will provide you with much nourishment in the coming days. You've already done the work of gathering the kindling, the dry wood of your realizations and discoveries, so that your inner fire will glow bright and warm all throughout the winter season.

You have also learned much from our sisters, the trees, in how to honor the natural processes of Mother Nature, trusting that what falls away will be composted and recycled, and what is left will be used for sustenance and growth.

You understand the importance of staying rooted, deeply connected to the golden core in yourself and of the Earth, in order to keep balance and equanimity ...whilst also remaining deeply rooted in the starry realms, attuning your inner ears to the music of the spheres and the wisdom it reveals to us. In acknowledging the sap that moves like a tide within us, we can breathe gracefully between expansion and contraction so that in this moment of vulnerability as bare trees, we are open to receive, and can surrender fully to the gifts of coming Home to ourselves.

You are deeply loved,

Mom

An HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Coppin has a culturally rich history as an institution providing quality educational programs and community outreach services. Coppin offers 53 majors and nine graduate-degree programs. A fully accredited institution, Coppin serves Baltimore residents as well as students from around the world, with flexible course schedules that include convenient day, evening, and weekend classes and distance learning courses.

Coppin State University was founded in 1900 at what was then called Colored High School (later named Douglass High School) on Pennsylvania Avenue by the Baltimore City School Board who initiated a one-year training course for the preparation of African-American elementary school teachers. By 1902, the training program was expanded to a two-year Normal Department within the high school, and seven years later it was separated from the high school and given its own principal.

The student population is comprised of nearly 4,000 students who are enrolled in day, evening and weekend undergraduate/graduate courses. Many are Baltimore residents from very diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. Coppin State University has graduated thousands of alumni who are making a tremendous impact in the State of Maryland in various fields, particularly Human Services.

Now, and in the years to come, Coppin State University will continue to help bring the dreams of its students to fruition through its educational programs, reach beyond its campus to help the community, and serve the citizens of Baltimore, the State of Maryland, and the nation.

Before I tell you about the boy, quick question. Did you see my latest ‘Grab This‘ giveaways on sistasense.com?

Anyhoo, lately I’ve been thinking about this little boy I met in the dollar store a few weeks ago. He is not the kid in the picture above, I just like to add pictures to my posts. (Back to the story). The little boy in the store walks up to my hubby and says, “Hi. Can I have a $1?” Of course you already know the look his momma gave him (lol). Then she told him that he shouldn’t ask questions like that and to her he replied, “If you don’t ask mom, you don’t get.”

Looking at them we could tell they had fallen on hard times, but that isn’t really why I am writing this. I try to always look at things from a positive point of view and what I got out of this little encounter was a big message. I used to be very afraid to ask questions and speak up until I realized there is no such thing as a shy entrepreneur. You can’t want people to buy your stuff and hate to sell. You can’t want people to know who you are, but get butterflies in your gut at the thought of being seen. Point being, “If you don’t ask ladies and gents, you don’t get.”

Now hold on a second there, don’t think I just gave you a license to go ask me an everybody else a million questions. I think the other side of that equation is, “If you don’t learn how to do for yourself, things won’t get done for you.” So please put those two points together and find a balance.

On that note, I’d like to share a few questions from a few of our BBWO members looking for answers:

1) Gathering Contacts from eBook Buyers
2) Finding Customers for Your Business
3) Starting Your Own Web Design Business?
4)Need a solution for posting documents for a time
5) What is your most used marketing technique?

Here are a few resources I created to give you some answers:

1) 7 Things I Learned About Selling Online
2) How Women Entrepreneurs Us the Internet to Market Online
3) How-To Use BBWO (Social Networking Videos)

Here are a few folks who want you:

1) The Cashflow is looking for Freelance Writers
2) Mentor Wanted for Newbie Entrepreneur
3) Speakers Wanted for Radio Show Interviews

Now I need you to do two things for me. Hey, if I don’t ask, I won’t get (lol). I would love it if you would go vote for my Bedtime Story and then tell me what you want to see on the BBWO Network.

Remember when I used to say, "I only do at most 3 websites per month." Lord knows, I threw that baby out with the bath water this month. I've gotten A LOT of requests for website design and/or redesign projects lately, so I've decided to direct more of my attention to those of you in need of my web design services. If you are tearing your hair out because your don't know how to manage your website on your own OR your web designer never gets back to you, let me say 'SORRY' for all us web designers out there who actually like our customers. I have heard web design horror stories from quite a few of my new clients mainly because they gave their previous web designer too much control over their site and/or they had no clue how to update the website on their own. It is for the last reason specifically that I love building websites using the wordpress.org platform. I can create custom redesign projects that my clients love AND then I can show them how easy it is to use wordpress to blog and/or update content on their websites by themselves. The site above is for one of my favorite women entrepreneurs online, British Hill, the creator of popular Ning Network MLMBlackWoman. I've been working with British on different projects for years and as great referrals go, a few years back she recommended me to her husband Shelby Hill. I just recently shared my post on new ning network and blogging projects, Shelby's Relationship Radio Blog, was one of them. I apologized to those of you with web design horror stories. Now let me say thank you, to those of you who have worked with me and shared my services with others. Right now I am working with Jill on her website (preview here). It's not quite done yet, but thus far she's really been happy with the progress. In her last email she said to me:
McDonald's, McDonald's....I'm lov'in it! I saw how you put my picture in the conference room TV! Wow! What creativity...it's evident that we (clients on a small budget might not get all the features", but I see it get's the same level of love! I'm always so grateful when I have good people working with me. Thank you so much for getting my excitement level LaShanda. (When looking for a designer) should have come to you first, after awhile I'm going to be able to let that go."
Gail and Karlyn from A+ Senior Care recently told me:
"It has been a pleasure working with you. I appreciate your professionalism, your prompt response to our feedback, and how easy you made the process. I have worked with others and have seen how other web designers do business and I have been impressed with your level of professionalism. You created a website we are truly proud of, thank you very much.... Plus we’ve had some good feedback on the new website."
Thank you again ladies and gents for putting your web business visions in my hands. If you need a website, just let me know. My pricing for custom wordpress website projects start at $650, but I do offer custom rates to fit your projects, big or small. Click here to contact me. And if you need help figuring out how to use your blog, be sure to sign up for my live video session next week entitled, How to Be a Better Blogger.

Remember to Return the Favor!

It is an everyday practice for pretty much everyone in social networking to request new friends, request that someone "like" your page, suggest you befriend someone else, suggest that you "like" someone else's page, follow a blog, etc. What happens after you do these things?

The odds are, if you are an entrepreneur, you are not requesting Facebook friends and requesting and suggesting that people Like your page just for old time sake right? When it comes down to business, understand that these things are done for a reason that typically goes beyond you, Facebook marketing, networking, and making friends!

If you are an entrepreneur and you rely on social media to build your business and communicate with your customers and prospects remember today's key Social Media Etiquette Tips!

  1. Remember to Return the Favor: Do not request that someone become a fan of your business and when they do, you don't return the favor to them in some form or fashion. Even if you are not yet a customer of theirs, or perhaps you feel that you never will be, unless they are pushing something that goes against your values, why not? Don't take every request personally because the odds are it isn't about you! Like I always say, you never know who your future customers, clients and/or business partners may be. So as long as it's tasteful, why not Like it! The odds are, no one will judge you for doing so.
  2. Remember it is Done for a Reason: In many cases, people have a need to have their page liked and their blog followed because they are "building a business." They are building credibility. They are building a base….a brand…just as a brick-and-mortar business would do to get to the next phase of growth and development.

Remember….if it's tasteful, professional and doesn't go against your grain…Like it! It's about building business and building relationships! Liking a page and/or following a blog can be a stepping stone to great things that will increase your power, potential and ultimately your profit!

Using a Virtual Assistant

What is a Virtual Assistant?
Need a VA? Call 469-737-0712
A virtual assistant, or VA, is an administrative professional who outsources his or her administrative talents and experience to small business, individuals and corporations for a long or short-term period. Most virtual assistants have several years of experience in the corporate world, and bring to their business the training and experience accumulated during those years.

For me, I have over 15 years experience in administrative roles and worked for top companies such as Fed Ex Office and Southwest Airlines. I also have a degree in Office Management and another degree in Business Management. I used my 8 years experience as an internet marketer to specialize as an internet marketing virtual assistant. So along with administrative tasks, I also help small businesses with marketing online.

Many administrators who leave the corporate world to start their own virtual assistant business do so because they are motivated to achieve and want to influence how their talents are used and developed. Virtual assistants are known for continually developing their administrative skills, business knowledge, and keeping up with leading edge technology to provide you, the client, with professional and reliable virtual service.

Virtual Assistants In Business
Virtual assistants are not employees. We are small business owners who work with you to support your business goals and needs. When you contract a virtual assistant, you receive expert and flexible administrative support, provided through popular and leading edge technology. VAs are business owners themselves and understand why you and your business need professional, timely, reasonably priced service. Because the client's satisfaction is key to the success of a virtual assistant business, you can expect solid and reliable performance on a continuing basis.

Though virtual assistants can be engaged for an occasional project, their potential is best realized in ongoing business relationships with their clients. Over time, your virtual assistant will become more familiar with the workings of your business, so he or she can better support you and add to your success.

The many small business owners and entrepreneurs of today's business world have found virtual assistants to be an invaluable resource. Virtual assistants have come a long way from being "work at home" secretaries. They can be writers, proofreaders, editors, database creators, researchers, marketers, web designers ... The list of possibilities is as diverse as the people who enter the VA industry. Business people are realizing they no longer have to do everything on their own and are hiring virtual assistants to take care of tasks they no longer have time for, or that they don't enjoy doing.

Where Is The VA Industry Going?
It's only going to get bigger and better! The current trend in business outsourcing means that the role of virtual assistants will become more significant in the future. As technology develops and business need grows, a virtual assistant may soon become a vital part of every successful business.

Business ownership can be an amazing and challenging experience. The key is to have a plan in place. If you want to start a business to get rich quick, looking to work only a few hours per week or someone said you should, then here are five reasons why you should not give up your day job yet.

You haven’t determined the start up cost of your venture. If you haven’t taken the time to determine your start up costs as well as how much it will take to sustain you the first year, then you are not ready to start a business. I’ve had clients come to me right after start up to apply for SBA funding for their business. Most have tapped into their personal savings and at the point of desperation for funding to help them keep their business open. Depending on their credit situation and stability of their business, determines if a lender will take the risk. Starting a business is a commitment and understanding your financial obligations are key to having a stable company.

Your family or close friends said you have the best product or service. I’ve seen this happen too many times. I consult with new clients who are excited about various business ideas because their friends and family told them that their home made brownies were the best around; or make the best costume jewelry. While this might be true, it’s going to take a lot more than the word and sales from your family and friends to stay in business. You must test your products or services as well as research to determine if there is a market for it.

You are tired of working long hours on your job or hate your boss. Your feeling a little frustrated with your job and by starting a business, you can work less and won’t have a boss breathing down your back. Not so fast! If you think that by starting a business you won’t have to work harder and longer hours, you will be in for a rude awakening. Furthermore, you will have a new set of bosses, your customers! Starting a business will require more time and effort, plus an irregular pay check.

You want to make a lot of money, fast! It’s not wrong to want to make money doing what you love; it’s just not likely to happen in that first year or two. You should start with a strong business and marketing plan which is a great road map to the development, growth and success of your business.

You are afraid of failure and risk taking. If the idea of failure and risk-taking has you ‘shaking in your boots,’ then you might want to evaluate your business idea carefully. As a business owner, you will have to make both planned and unexpected decisions. Each business decision made comes with an element of risk, so you must be comfortable in your abilities as a manager of your company.

Fear is normal because of the unknown, but if you have taken the steps to insure business success, it can be overcome. There are resources to help you. Contact your local SBA Regional office for resources available for start-up companies.

In conclusion, since 80% of new businesses fail within their first year, it is extremely important to have a clear purpose, passion and determination to succeed. Otherwise, my advice is to stay gainfully employed!

Frogs and 4th of July

Having spent a whole week away from my desk, computer, and online life, I got back in touch with my offline life. I love mommy daddy time and funny moments. I miss smelly little toes and warm days outside, so guess what! I think I am officially going to take some of the ‘work’ out of my ‘work at home mom’ status. As much as I love my wonderful online family, I love my real family even more and its time to take a break. *smile*. So I’m gonna tap into my make more while working less strategies so I can enjoy my lil Chris before he becomes a big Chris *lol*. I’m not sure how this will all pan out, but I am definitely excited to take this next step in my journey.

I am sure you want to know why there is a Teddy Ruxpin doll in the Blogalicious Picture of me and one of my new found Blogalicious friends, Lesley from HP. Well, yesterday, I frantically stared at my web browser while trying to buy one of the original 1985 Teddy Ruxpin dolls for my son. I would have given him mines, but the bottom part of his mouth is gone (lol). Anyhoo, as a proud 80s baby I am determined to give my toddler all the cool stuff I got, and I love that Teddy Ruxpin reads you stories, so in addition to a Leapster, Teddy has to be apart of his birthday bash (shh… it’s a secret).

After almost being outbid, I won a Teddy Ruxpin on ebay! (Whoo hoo!) As I am shaking with excitement, I think to myself, “the classics never die.” No matter how good technology gets, no matter how advanced our electronics become, the simple things that worked for us in the past will always be relevant.

This is a point that was really hammered home to me at Blogalicious. I’ve spoken with different women and brands via twitter, email, linkedin, etc., but nothing can compare to sitting across from someone and sharing ideas. As a tech savvy sista, I was so excited to speak with Lesley, who has been working with HP for years. She told me all about HP’s Lets Do Amazing project, their latest products for entrepreneurs like myself, AND the collection of how-to video tutorials that HP has online for users who want to learn more about using software to make their home office and home lives better.

In addition to getting the inside scoop on very cool hp products that I will fill you in on in posts to come, I just really valued having the opportunity to network with other successful, ambitious, tech savvy women of color at Blogalicious. I know ALOT of women entrepreneurs, myself included who do EVERYTHING online because to be honest its cheaper. While there is alot we can do online to build our businesses and brands, do not put yourself in a space where you use the internet or online freebies as a crutch. Email marketing and buying access to big lists won’t always drive traffic to your space. Sending a tweet out to brands or other entrepreneurs you follow, won’t always get them to respond and follow you back.

BASICALLY… like it or not, sometimes you have to stop pounding the digital pavement and go back out into the real world. Attending events, doing old school marketing, radio, print, workshops, etc… its not a bad thing. I don’t see books becoming obsolete anytime soon, so please don’t get fooled into thinking your life begins with your website and ends with your iphone.
