Start Your Own Web Design Business

While updating the like button for my facebook fanpage, I noticed a new comment in response to my recent post on web projects that I am working on. Laura T said:

Great Work Lashanda! You are a master at what you do! It’s also exactly what I do – WordPress Websites & Creative Marketing Ideas for the Pet Industry Niche only. Love working with WordPress! I’m wondering..whether you have a lot of women entrepreneurs who are web designers and if you do I’d love to see a help guide on running a web design business. If some day you are looking for a new topic to write about LOL – Do’s and Don’ts. I learn the hard way!

Well, a few months back when I did my 90 video, Technology, Tools and Web Talk Series, I did a few videos on how this work at home mompreneur started her own web design business online. I figured you might be curious about this too, so I am reposting my Startup Home Business videos below. If you can not see the videos, click here.

Most of you know that sistasense.com is my personal info-blog for women entrepreneurs, but it is also the official blog for my social network, ‘Black Business Women Online.’ Well, the Ning tech staff has been working really hard to give us premium members new features and the latest one is a wordpress plugin that allows network creators to post content via our wordpress blog and then have that content automatically posted to our ning network blog! How cool is that!

I already have my blog connected to my twitter and facebook page using twitterfeed (video tutorial here), so this is one more cool way for me to add content to all my social media spaces directly from my blog. Now that my wordpress blog is connected to my network, you will see a lot more BBWO posts here on SistaSense. Many of us walk around marketing our personal brand by the seat of our pants. It may not be intentional, but there are things we do daily that demonstrate who we are to prospective clients, co-workers, managers, and colleagues.

I have really begun to mentally process how the discipline of marketing a business and many of the principles that come with it are just as critical for personal success.

There is great value in developing a personal brand marketing strategy that helps you stand out, and that makes you more credible in the eyes of your select audience. Unfortunately, it is way too easy to ignore because of competing priorities for our time.

Here is a short list of though provoking questions and action plans for you relevant to your personal marketing strategy:

  • Do you have a personal brand marketing plan or do you personally market yourself unintentionally?
  • If you have a brand marketing plan, does it include specific promotional activities and are these tied to events?
  • Have you taken the time to identify a target customer, or employer? What desired characteristics have you named?
  • Does your personal brand strategy identify ways to sell to and maintain your current clients while attracting new ones?
  • What are the demographics of your key prospects? What makes you distinctly different, or unique as compared to your competitors?
  • What is your personal brand marketing budget? How will you distribute these funds?
If any of these stump you, now is a great time to consider your next steps. Creating a personal brand strategy can be just as important for you in this day and age, as a company’s marketing strategy.

Confronting Me!!

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was forced to confront the woman that stood before me in the mirror. Although, it was my reflection, shedidn't look like me. She looked tired, rundown, beat and bruised to thecore. I stepped away from the mirror hoping by the time I looked in itagain, I would see the person I wanted to see. The woman with the longflowing hair, Mac make-up on to a "T", the woman that could make lifelook so easy to those that took at glimpse at her. But the image I wasgiving to the world was a facade a superficial appearance. Inside I wasslowly dying and just existing. Living life the way others wanted me to.I wasn't being true to me.

That was six years ago. I was forced to lookin the mirror and realize that life is to short to live in an unhappystate of mind. Life is to short to be afraid to live life to it'sfullest. Life is to short to be angry. Six years ago I decided to startworking on "ME" and although I still stumble and fall. The fall is alittle different and the way I lift myself up has changed :-). If youask me what was the worst day of my life, I would have to say the day Iwas forced to "Confront Me". If you ask me what was the best day of mylife. I would have to say the day I was forced to "Confront Me". I knowyour thinking how could that be, you see on that day I realized that Ihad wasted so many years of my life living for others and now I waslooking at the reflection of a woman I barely knew. I didn't know herlikes or dislikes, I didn't know where she was going, she had no goals,no dreams, she was just existing and that scared the mess out of me, buton that same day I decided to step into my "Greatness" and answer allthe questions my soul was asking. Chloe who are you? Who are you at thecore of your being? What labels have you allowed others to put on youthat you now believe or what labels have you put on yourself. Why do youcontinue to hold onto anger? I had a million question that needed to beanswered. I had to figure out who is Chloe Womack... I know who she isnow and I continue to learn new things about her everyday. I have fallenin love with "ME" and I love it. In the words of Ms. Whitney Houston "IDidn't Know My Own Strength", but now I do!!

In the video above, click here if you can't see it, I did a mini-interview with one of my new sister-friends, Boni Candelario, Career Coach and creator of Coach'm Up. After a full day of networking and Saturday Sessions, Nikki suggested we chillax in the Ritz Carlton Jacuzzi, which turned out to be even better of an idea than we thought. Initially I loved the idea because I got a chance to shop for a new bathing suit (not sharing pictures, but sista girl I bought my 1st Bikini - lol). Thank God it was at night, because I wasn't trying to scare any kids with my love handles, but seriously, in the end our downtime turned into a pretty interesting mastermind session.

As both women bloggers and coaches, Boni and I started talking about the benefits of blogging and using social media to market ourselves online. I casually brought up a discussion I had with another sister-blogger earlier that day. As I told that sista about my graphic design services, she told me that her husband was also a graphics designer BUT very old school. She was curious to know how I managed to keep my business steady and I was eager to give her a few tips.
  • Having My Own Social Network for Business Women (mybbwo.com)
  • Sharing Marketing Advice On My Blog
  • Consistently Tweeting, Creating Videos, and/or Using Facebook Updates to share tips, tools, and updates
I basically told her taking the time to give my know-how and support to other women of color online is what helps me attract attention and consistently get good business. To that she replied she was having a difficult time getting her husband to understand the value of social media to solo entrepreneurs. "He doesn't want to get into twitter," she told me. "He said he doesn't want folks stealing his ideas. He believes in old school marketing, giving out cards and waiting for calls to see what pans out BUT I keep telling him that he has to get with the times."

Sharing that story literally heated up our Jacuzzi Mastermind session.

Central State University

Wilberforce, Ohio

Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation's oldest historically black universities, with a 120-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements. The College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business and Industry, which includes the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering and Water Resources Management, form the core of the University’s varied academic offerings.

The CSU Institute for Urban Education (IUE) builds on Central State’s roots as a center of excellence for teacher education. It also reflects the College of Education’s emphasis on preparing teachers for work in today’s urban classrooms. Housed in the newly constructed Center for Education and Natural Sciences, the IUE serves as a national resource center for the training of urban teachers and the exchange of scholarship on urban education issues. A newly developed program in environmental engineering builds on CSU’s signature Water Resources Management Program, and a new major in criminal justice will further expand career opportunities for Central State University students.

A centrally located branch campus in Dayton, Ohio, CSU-Dayton, offers a range of courses and class schedules that serve the needs of nontraditional learners wishing to complete their undergraduate degrees, pursue master’s degrees in education, or take advantage of professional development opportunities.

Central State is home to the nationally renowned Central State University Chorus, which has twice been nominated for a Grammy. The Lady Marauders basketball team is perennially in the national rankings and has traveled to 12 straight NAIA national tournaments. The track and field team as well as the cheerleading and dance troupes have also won championships and awards, and the Central State marching band, the Invincible Marching Marauders, have twice performed at the national Honda Battle of the Bands and been featured in the 2006 film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. With the return of football to Central State in 2005, the Mighty Marauders are reviving a legacy that produced several national championships. Central State’s impending move to NCAA Division II will widen the University’s competitive field and provide more exposure for Central State University’s student athletes.

CSU is Ohio’s only predominately African American public institution of higher education, but it is, and has always been, “open to all persons of good moral character,” as ordained by the 1887 legislation that created Central State's predecessor. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.

Your Legacy: Do you have a plan in place?

Last week, I received a call from a lady who needed financial assistance to start a business. She had done a ‘reverse mortgage’ on her home to purchase some land to use for a business idea. I learned that she was in her seventies, had very little income and no savings but wanted so desperately to leave a legacy for her adult children. She said, ‘Sylvia, I will fight with all my strength to make this happen for my children before l die.”

After that call, I was both touched and shaken. Here, an elderly lady so passionate about taking care of her adult children, waited so late in life to plan for her family’s future. Sadly, her financial situation might hinder her from receiving a small business loan.

Have you considered what you will leave behind for loved ones beyond your financial assets?

Leaving a legacy for our five children is extremely important to my husband and me. For us, it’s leaving our property, stock, a family business and a substantial amount of savings. For others, it could be leaving their life savings to a favorite charity. By planning, you ensure that your wealth and values will continue to be preserved for generations. Do you have a legacy plan in place?

What is Legacy Planning?

According to PlanYourLegacy.com, legacy planning allows you to preserve your values, memories and final wishes to ensure you leave your loved ones with clarity and inspiration rather than confusion and pain.

Why Legacy Planning?

  • By planning, you’ve shielded your loved ones from conflict that plagues families after a death
  • Prevents surprises by bringing your extended family into the planning process
  • Allow you to establish your legacy while you are alive to see it progress

A Few Tips to Better Manage Your Affairs

  • Make sure your wills, life insurance policies and retirement plan beneficiaries are updated and reflect your current wishes.
  • Keep in mind that retirement plans, IRA’s, and life insurance policies all have beneficiary designations that supersede wills.
  • Make sure you understand the tax consequences of gifts left to heirs.
  • Seek an attorney and/or professional financial advisor to assist in legacy planning.

Imagine leaving a legacy that can influence the well-being of your family, friends or your favorite charity? By doing so, ensures that your final wishes are honored, thus, avoiding confusion!

More Money Will Solve All Your Problems!

If only you had more money you could buy more inventory, buy more advertising, move to a better location, hire more staff and poof business would be better and your problems would all disappear!

Many business owners make the mistake of thinking that having greater access to capital will solve all of their business problems! While money can make things better, it will by no means fix what's broken. In reality most entrepreneurs would create greater financial difficulty if they had more money because they would still be missing the critical and essential ingredients for business success.

Key Ingredients for Business Success that Money Won't Change

  1. A Sustainable Business Model - what you are doing must be proven, viable, scalable. It has to work! Business has to be about more than your gut, your instinct and your faith. If it isn't sustainable it will never work.
  2. Experienced Principals & Managers - those at the forefront of your business must be experienced in the business. Experience is the best teacher and experience is a prerequisite to growth.
  3. Financial Fundamentals - being well versed in the financial aspect of business is a must. Cash Flow Statements, Income Statements, Balance Sheets, ROI - should be common terms to you or to whoever is handling your financials. You need to know how you are doing financially at all times!

More money will not change the need for the above! More money will require an even greater capacity to run a viable business. Running a viable business requires experienced individuals that understand both the business aspect and the financial aspect of building a business!

I don't have to tell you that you should be blogging right? I think at this point enough people have already told you to start blogging, so my question to you is are you ready to become a better blogger? Becoming a better blogger means different things to different people. For some 'better' means learning the technical stuff like setting up wordpress, using themes, adding plugins, etc. For others 'better' means using your blog to attract customers, make money, build buzz and the list goes on. If you fall into either of these categories, then join me for a live SistaSense Video Session (next week) entitled 'How to Be a Better Blogger.'

This session will be 2 hours from 8pm est to 10pm est (actual date to be announced soon). For the first hour I will explain the right kind of content to have on your blog, how to drive traffic to your blog, as well as how to use blogging to market your business and sell your products online. If you really want to understand what it means to effectively monetize your blog and make money by blogging for your business then this workshop is for you. For the second half of the session I will go over how you can setup a wordpress blog, maintaining your blog on your own, using cool plugins and widgets, plus adding things like youtube videos, audio, contact forms, and ads to your blog.

Throughout the live session you can ask me questions AND for those who sign up for this workshop I will give you the chance to send me your blogging questions via email SO if I get enough questions I plan on doing a BONUS q&a session from 7pm to 8pm est. Basically, this will be a live private group session; admission will be $30 for two (possibly 3 hours if I do the Bonus Q&A).

I am in the process of setting up this event as well as a sweet promo code for those who sign up early.
