A question I often get from clients and students goes something like this: "I've been collecting marketing ideas... and I have a drawer full! I also have a stack of promising sales leads I've accumulated. And I know it's important to stay visible, so I do a lot of networking, but then I just end up with more names in the stack. How do I prioritize all this?"

If you've ever wondered something similar, you may have lost sight of a very important truth - the way to win the marketing game is not to collect the most sales leads; it's to make the most sales. Marketing activities that increase your number of sales are good, and activities that don't are bad, even if they bring in plenty of leads. If you don't follow up on the sales leads you gather, you are throwing away your time and money.

The main purpose of marketing strategies like public speaking, writing articles, getting publicity, networking, promotional events, and advertising is to gain visibility. (A secondary purpose of the first three strategies can be to gain credibility.) Why do you want to be visible? It's not just so people will know who you are and what you do, it's so they will do business with you.

If someone has already expressed interest in doing business, call them. Do it now. Memorize this rule -- following up on hot, or even warm, client leads is always more important than marketing for more visibility.

There is a simple diagnostic test you can take to see where you need to focus your marketing versus selling efforts, which I call the Universal Marketing Cycle. Think of the marketing and sales process as a water system that begins by filling your pipeline with sales leads. The pipeline empties into your follow-up pool, which you are continually dipping into.

Your intent is to move the sales leads further along in the system, to making a presentation of some kind (by phone or in person), and finally closing the sale.

Where are you stuck in this system? Is it in filling the pipeline to begin with? Or is the pipeline full, but you haven't been following up? Perhaps you have been following up, but don't seem to be getting to the presentation stage. Or maybe you are making presentations but not closing sales. Wherever you seem to be stuck is the area that needs more effort.

When you have promising leads you aren't contacting, the follow-up stage is clearly your stuck place. Take that stack of sales leads and sort them into three categories: prospective clients, useful networking contacts, and other. Now sort the prospective clients into hot, warm, and cold. Stop right there and follow up with all the hot and warm leads.

If, and I do mean if, you still need to do more work about marketing after following up with all those sales leads, go to the networking contacts and sort them into two groups: people who can lead you directly to prospective clients, and people who can lead you to other marketing opportunities (e.g. a new networking group or a speaking engagement). Stop, and you guessed it, follow up with the people who might have sales leads for you.

You should now have three groups left: cold client leads, people who can lead you to marketing opportunities, and other. Now is the time to decide whether you need to do something new to market yourself at all. Look at what you have been doing so far to get all those hot and warm leads you had. Maybe you just need to do more of the same.

If that's true, put those cold leads aside, because you'll have more hot and warm ones shortly. If you need to do something different to get better sales leads than what you had, go ahead and explore one of the new marketing possibilities in your second group, or one of the ideas stashed away in that drawer. And that "other" group? Throw them away. They are just cluttering up your pipeline.

10 Ways to Grow Your Business

Growing your business isn’t just a worthy goal; growing your business is a necessity for your business’s survival and your economic well-being. What can you do to get your business beyond the bare sustenance level? All of these ways of growing your business have been successfully used by other businesses and, with some planning and investment, will work for you.

1. Penetrate your existing market

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of growing your business is getting new customers. But the customers you already have are your best bet for increasing your sales; it’s easier and more cost-effective to get people who are already buying from you to buy more than to find new customers and persuade them to buy from you.

2. Ask for referrals

Getting new customers is another approach to growing your business. One of the easiest way to do this is to ask your current customers for referrals. But notice the verb. Doing a great job and just assuming that your customers are passing the word about your business isn’t going to do much to increase your customer base; you have to actively seek referrals. During or after every job or sale, ask your satisfied customer if he knows anyone else who would be interested in your products or services.

3. Innovate your product or service.

Discovering and promoting new uses for your products or services is a great way to both get existing customers to buy more and attract new customers. Think petroleum jelly and duct tape – and how few of these would actually be sold if they only had one use!

4. Extend your market reach.

There are several ways of growing your business by making your product or service available to a new pool of customers. The most obvious is to open stores in new locations, such as opening a store or kiosk in a new town. New locations can also be virtual, such as a website with an online store. Another approach is to extend your reach through advertising. Once you’ve identified a new market, you might advertise in select media that targets that market.

5. Participate in trade shows.

Trade shows can be a great way of growing your business. Because trade shows draw people who are already interested in the type of product or service you offer, they can powerfully improve your bottom line. The trick is to select the trade shows you participate in carefully, seeking the right match for your product or service.

6. Conquer a niche market

Remember the analogy of the big fish in the small pond? That’s essentially how this strategy for growing your business works. The niche market is the pond; a narrowly defined group of customers. Think of them as a subset whose needs are not being met and concentrate on meeting those unmet needs. A nursery, for instance, might specialize in roses.

7. Contain your costs.

Surprised? Bear in mind that when we’re talking about growing your business, we’re actually talking about growing your business’s bottom line. And the difference between pre-tax and post-tax money can make this a very effective growth strategy. There are two main approaches to cutting costs; liquidating your “loser” products and improving your inventory turnover.

8. Diversify your products or services.

The key to successfully growing your business through diversification is similarity. You want to focus on the related needs of your already established market or on market segments with similar needs and characteristics. An artist might also sell frames and framing services, for instance. Or a mountain bike rental business might switch to renting skidoos in the winter season.

9. Franchising.

The stories of entrepreneurs who have become both well known and well heeled due to franchising their small businesses are legion – and not just stories. If you have a successful business and can develop a system that ensures that others can duplicate your success, franchising may be the fast track for growing your business.

10. Exporting.

Expanding into international markets can also be a powerful boost to your business’s bottom line. Like franchising, this is a way of growing your business that requires quite a commitment of time and resources, but can be extremely rewarding.

There you have it; ten ways of growing your business. Don’t let this list overwhelm you; pick one or two of these ideas that are suitable to your business and your circumstances and get your plan for growing your business underway.

During my morning visit to the coffee shop, I saw an article in a magazine that was quite intriguing( if your into that sort of thing.) The article was entitled, “99 Sex Moves A Cosmo Crash Course.” Not that I have anything against sex, but I just believe whatever is happening in the bedroom is for married people only. Husband and Wife. Male and Female. I have to be clear about these things. Anyhow it inspired me to do what I am about to tell you. I am going to take a 99 day blogging challenge. I will take this challenge starting Monday April 26, 2010 through July 20. The challenge will go something like this: I am going to compile 99 Success Moves/Strategies that a woman can take to live her ultimate dream.

I guess I should set some type of criteria for the blog posts. They must be clear, concise and very simple. No more that 200 words in each blog posting.

Are You Shooting Yourself In The Foot?

Have you ever been at a networking function talking to someone when during the conversation you felt very self-conscious trying to say the right thing? Were you afraid that maybe if you said the wrong thing the person might not find you likable, and therefore not want to do business with you?

If you have, I am about to tell you why you should not worry about it. I want to share with you the reason why being careful about what we say works against us in the networking environment.


Our goal in business networking should be to establish new relationships and through the process of follow-up develop them over time. As with any relationship, being honest plays a very important role in that development.


When we meet someone for the first time, we want to make a good impression. Often we put on our "party face" so that we do. This can often cause us problems that we do not expect. One problem is that when we try to appear to be something that we really do not feel inside of us, we often have a fear that we are going to be "discovered". This fear causes us to feel uncomfortable about the situation and though we may be smiling, we are really cringing inside :-)


Most people worry that if they just be who they are, that no one can accept them. I argue that if we do not just be ourselves, sooner or later who we really are will slip out and then we will have to deal with the consequences of being discovered. This then leads to a feeling of distrust between people.


Have you ever been in a relationship with a person of the opposite sex where you did not tell them something important early on and later had to reveal it or even worse it was revealed by accident? It leads for difficult times after that and a lot of shuffling and apologizing.


In my opinion, it is better to risk being who I am up front. To let people know exactly how I feel. People, for the most part, have a forgiving nature. They actually want to forgive. If you make a mistake and say something that can be potentially embarrassing, you can always apologize for it and be forgiven. But if you say something that is not necessarily true and are discovered later, your credibility may be permanently damaged.


If you go into a networking environment prepared to be relaxed and genuine, you will find that it is a lot more fun to be there. If you have a plan of action to really get to know people, you will be much more productive in a shorter amount of time. People will feel comfortable talking to you and you to them. In an environment of truth, more people will want to do business with you and to be around you.


Authentic enthusiasm is contagious. You will always appear to be more attractive when you are excited about what you are doing. When you are not worried about making mistakes, you will appear to be happier. Being happy about the situation will help you to smile more, and the smiling face is a natural human attractor.


So next time you attend a networking function, just be yourself. Your results will improve and you will feel better when you leave to go home. Over time, the difference will be measurable in more ways than just your income. You will find that you have more real good friends than you had ever imagined possible. When it comes time for the referral, your real good friend will remember you because friends really do refer friends.

PROGRESS, PROGRESS, PROGRESS!

Ok if you started this with me you should be progressing and moving foward in your progress in positive thinking, having a positive outlook, and changing your life for a better future. How are things going? Have you experienced a change in your attitude, personal life, business, your atmosphere? If not what is holding you back?

Let's take a moment to think about how we can demolish all of the henderances out of our lives so there is nothing holding us back from being able to move forward into a life full of joy, prosperity, and complete fulfillment. Since death and life is in the power of our tounge, meaning the words we speak over ourself, then we may need to change how we talk about our future. Instead of saying "I'm broke, I don't have the money, I'm not capable" demolish that way of talking and switch your words from "I don't, I can't, I'm not" to "I have, I can, I am!"

So with your list that you created of all the things you invision yourself having, being, and doing begin to speak about those things in present tense. Speak about those things as if you already have it and it already exists. Doing this will further affirm into your atmosphere that the things you have declared you will have will manifest.

Here are some words to begin to speak just as a sample list of affirmations:

I am successful

I have everything I want and need

I drive a (input the name of the car you invision yourself driving)

I am Joy

I am Peace

I am love and I am loved

I am respected by everyone and I respect others

I have and abundance of wealth

I have prosperity, I am prosperous, I am successful

I live an abundant and full life

Money comes easily and frequently to me

My business is successful (It's good to name your business on this one to be specific)

I am giving toward others

I have so much wealth and abundance that I am able to give without reservation or hesitation

I have all of the business connections I need

I am always in the right place at the right time meeting the right people that will help me grow my business, life, relationships.

These are just a few example affirmation phrases that you can speak over yourself daily to begin changing your outlook, life, and circumstance!

Stress inevitably will be part of the job search process. Here are tips to help you deal with stress.

Write down what seems to be causing the stress - Identify the "stressors," thenthin of possible ways to handle each one. Can some demands be altered, lessened, or postponed? Can you live with any of them just as they are? Are there some that you might be able to deal with more effectively?

Set Priorities - Deal with the most pressing needs or changes first. You cannot handle everything at once.

Establish a workable schedule - When you set a schedule for yourself, make sure it is one that can be achieved. As you perform your tasks, you will feel a sense of control and accomplishment.

Reduce stress - Learn relaxation techniques, or other stress-reduction techniques. This can be as simple as sitting in a chair, closing your eyes, taking a deep breath and breathing out slowly while imagining all the tension going out with your breath. There are a number of other methods, including listening to relaxation tapes, that may help you cope with stress more effectively.

Avoid isolation - Keep in touch with your friends, even former coworkers, if you can do that comfortably. Unemployed individuals often feel a sense of isolation and loneliness. See your friends, talk with them, socialize with them. You are the same person you were before unemployment. The same goes for activities that you have enjoyed in the past. Evaluate them. Which can you afford to continue? If you find that your old hobbies or activities can't be part of your new budget, perhaps you can substitute new activities that are less costly.

Join a support group. No matter how understanding or caring your family or friends might be, they may not be able to understand all that you're going through and you might be able to find help and understanding at a support group for job seekers.

These groups consist of people who are going through the same experiences and emotions you are. Many groups also share tips on job opportunities, as well as feedback on way to deal more effectively in the job search process. National Business Employment Weekly, available at major newsstands, list support groups throughout the country. Local churches, YMCAs, YWCAs, and libraries often list (or even host) support groups. For information about self-help groups in New Jersey, call The New Jersey Self-Help Group Clearinghouse at 1-800-367-6274. It's on the Internet at www.njgroups.org.

If the spacing between your eyes is wider than the width of one eye, your eyes are considered wide-set. Your goal is to create the illusion that they are set closer together.

*In this case, you need to darken the inside hollows of your eye next to the bridge of your nose more than for any other eye shape. Deepening the color helps this area appear to recede and makes your eyes look closer together.

*Begin all dark-color application slightly in from the outer corners and blend your shadow in and up instead of outward, because an outward blending will "pull" the eyes wider apart, and your goal is to "pull" the eyes wider apart, and your goal is to "pull" them closer together.

APPLICATION:

1. Highlight shade: Apply to browbone & lid.

2. Midtone shade: Starting from the outer corner of the crease, bring the color towards the inside corner of your eye. Be sure to apply a few more layers to the inside corners to deepen the color and help visually push the eyes closer together.

3. Contour shade: Starting slightly in from the outer corner, brush it across the upper lash line and up into the crease of your eye. Also sweep it underneath the lower lash line, being careful not to extend the color beyond the outer edge of the eye.
