Twenty Questions to Ask Your School Counselor.

Your school counselor is one of your best resources as you plan for college. Your counselor has information about admissions tests, college preparation, and your education and career options. Here are some basic questions to help get your conversation started:

1.What are the required and recommended courses—for graduation and for college prep?

2. How should I plan my schedule so I'll complete them?

3. Which elective courses do you recommend?

4. Which AP® courses are available? (Advance Placement)

5. When is the PSAT/NMSQT® going to be school a testing center for the SAT®, or will I need to go somewhere nearby?

6.Is this school a testing center for the SAT®, or will I

need to go somewhere nearby?

7. Do you have any after-school or evening sessions available for college planning, or the SAT?

8. Do you have college handbooks or other guides that I can browse or borrow? Do you have a copy of the free SAT Preparation Booklet™,which has a practice test in it?

9. What activities can I do at home and over the summer to get ready for college?

10. What kinds of grades do different colleges require?

11. Are there any college fairs at this school, or nearby?

12. Where do other kids from this school attend college?

13.What are the requirements or standards for the honor society?

14. Can you put me in touch with recent grads who are

going to the colleges on my wish list?

15. Do you have any information to help me start

exploring my interests and related careers?

16. If my colleges need a recommendation from you,

how can I help you know me better, so it can be more

personal?

17. Are there any special scholarships or awards that I

should know about now, so I can work toward them?

18. Can I see my transcript as it stands now, to see if

everything is as I think it should be?

19. Do you have any forms I need to apply for financial

aid?

20. How does our school compare to others, in terms of

test scores and reputation?

Reality Check

Your school counselor may be the most wonderful and accessible person on the planet, or may be juggling a thousand students and barely know your name. So remember that the person who has the biggest stake in your academics is you. It's up to you to stay on top of opportunities and deadlines, to take control of your future.

SistaSense Says: Tell Me What You Want

Most of the time I am all, "Hey this is what you should be doing with your business" or "Hey, look at this marketing guide I created for you" BUT everybody has to do something a little different every now and again.

This past week I tried a few new things:

1. Guest Posts from other Web Women Entrepreneurs
2. Adding more new videos and video tutorials
3. Sharing more giveaway contests
4. Posting one and two articles more on black women and less on business
5. Hosting A SistaSense Challenge for Women Entrepreneurs
6. Posting about other Successful Women Entrepreneurs of Color
7. Answering Your Web Marketing Questions Via the Blog
8. Highlighting Events for Black Women Into Technology, Blogging, Business, and/or Self Improvement

I think I am going to do more of this STUFF on SistaSense, as well as give you some more technology reviews and computer software how-tos like my post on removing spyware from your computer or adding new life to my old HP Laptop.

I think its time to step up my SistaSense game and share more than just my marketing tips and/or products with you. Its time to unleash the multiple sides of sistasense! I think I might also throw in some more mom in my 'work at home mom' talk, so you can get a glimpse into my daily wahm life! Yall keep asking me about time management and getting it all done, so I'm gonna keep sharing on topics of interest to you.

I am posting this now to give you a heads up on the new changes and also to ask you a question, "What kind of content would you like to see on SistaSense.com?" Let me know, by clicking here and posting a comment on that page and I'll rub my genie lamp (aka my computer screen) to make some things happen.

That's the new and here is the old. I wanted to quickly share this info for those of you who are itching to join my SistaSense Circle and/or saving up to get access to the replays of our 1st session entitled: "How to Improve Your Sales and Visibility online." This session is particularly useful if you need to get focused and figure out what you are really suppose to be doing when you spend all those hours online trying to market your business.

I have 10 "Need It Now" promo codes so you can get in now for $47. When you click the option to join, remember to use this promo code: NOW47.

If you'd like to schedule a consultation, which is not included in the replay package, this is what I am doing now. I am gifting a 60 minute consultation to you if you register for the regular $97 before October 4th, 2010. If you register at this rate, send me an email (lhenry@sistasense.com) and include your consultation redemption code (CALL97). Think of the consultation as my BONUS gift to you for signing up to the circle, so in addition to listening to all the replays we can sit down and talk more about what you can do with your online business (signup details here).

But of course, I have one more thing to share because even when I say I'm done ... I'm not done. (lol). I've received several messages from my fellow business sistas who've fallen on hard times and desperately want to get into the circle, but can't do it just yet. If you currently don't have the means to join, remember there is still time to join the Sistas Who Sell Seven Day Challenge which is 7 days of audio and bonus video from me about internet marketing and sales basics. Its only $7 to sign up for the 7 Day Challenge. Now you can't beat that with a bat! (lol). There is absolutely no reason you can't get access to my web coaching material.

Alright, so I want to know what you want to see on sistasense. Post your two cents in the comment box here then figure out which SistaSense Session is right for you right now ... $7 option, $47 option, $97 option. All giving you the chance to virtually pick my brain and learn some new things about how I manage to market online for little to no cost, consistently increase my online sales, and get all this great buzz! In between working on web project for clients, I try and keep up with your questions. I recently noticed this question in my inbox:
Black Enterprise Women's Conference: Hi LaShanda, When is the next conference or any women's conference and where will they be held? Are there any conferences coming up in the Dallas Texas area? Please let me know. I am really trying to network and get my books and my magazine out there. Any advice? I appreciate it very much. -SR
My response was in this discussion: Upcoming Events for Business Women: Retreats, Summits, and Conferences As you know, my BIG event right now is my Sistas Who Sell - 7 Day Challenge for Women Entrepreneurs Online. I will keep you posted on any events that I find, via the BBWO discussion group above. FYI: I will be attending Blogalicious Weekend 2010 in South Beach Miami in a few days. (shhh don't tell) lol ... seriously though... if you will be there then look out for me. I will write an official I am going to Blogalicous post closer to the event.

my time with my Co-Partner Father God and deep hearted thinking I am

at this program hearing about this program and praying that you would
somehow be able to participate. That time is now! Go to http://budurl.com/WEMB

will remain for the first 10 or until Sunday at midnight PST and it will increase and that will remain for the next 10 until Monday, midnight PST and then the Scholarship option will be removed.
I have been there. Wanting so bad to participate in a program that I knew would
change everything for me and if it weren't for the fre.e Teleseminars and kindness
of some I wouldn't be hear today. Oh and of course my Faith, family and favor of God.

TIPS FOR PICKING YOUR MAJOR

1. Obtain the list of what is offered at your school

2. List what interests you 2-5 options

3. Obtain the list of courses that are offered per major

4. Highlight the courses within each major that interest you *read the course descriptions* go through them one by one to see what sounds interesting & make notes

5. Contact and/or introduce yourself to 2 professors, career development staff, program adviser/guidance counselor & students within the major you are interested in. Ask them for a phone conference or face to face meeting. Ask them for feedback about their discipline. A. What they like about it? B.What they don’t? C.Why do they teach this discipline?/ Or why did you pick this major? D. Where have their students’ gone or professional fields they have chosen with this major? E. What are some of the challenges with this major?

6. Go to the library and/or research online career options for people majoring in what you have selected as your choices?

http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/CareerHandouts.shtml

http://www.sru.edu/pages/534.asp http://www.rileyguide.com/careers.html

http://www.careervideos.com/

7. Take an assessment (Jung Typology) *think about the results & talk to someone you think may be able to share further insight like a career counselor, parent, teacher)

http://www.humanmetrics.com/

8. Once you’ve narrowed down your search based on these things, contact the Career Office or your Guide Counselor or Admissions Counselor for more information

9. Go back to Academic Services or Career Development to share your information and be determined to make a decision.

10. Finally, know that no-matter what you choose that if you choose another career path in the end that is okay. For example: my boss in Finance was an English Major, an Accountant I met started in Marketing. It’s not the end all be all – so just step out on faith, but absolutely include your research, interviewing, and gut and go for it!

The Best Day(s) to Submit Your Press Release

If you've ever wondered why you didn't get any coverage from your local media for an event or announcement, it may be because you didn't send your press release on the right day.

It's true--reporters are always looking for stories but some days are better than others when it comes to getting their attention.

Mondays: It's the beginning of the work week for most journalists. They tend to get swamped with releases and announcement that all seemed to have piled up from the weekend. Your announcement may seem like small potatoes in comparison to some others and go unnoticed.

Tuesdays: Good Day! Email boxes have been cleared out (for the most part) and now they can take a serious look at what is being received.

Wednesdays: Another Good Day! To me, it's better than Tuesday for some of the same reasons.

Thursdays: Another Good Day!

Fridays: Unless you are hosting an event that involves a well-known celebrity or your event is larger than life, Fridays aren't really good days because it's too close to the weekend and journalists are thinking more out their weekend and cutting out early.

Saturdays: Believe it or not, I think Saturday is a GOOD day---if you are having some kind of activity on that day. Weekend Assignment Editors struggle to generate news and if you are doing something noteworthy, they would be likely to cover it. It could be a great human interest story for them.

Sundays: It depends. It could be good if you are doing something on THAT day. Otherwise, if you are submitting a release for something going on the following week, it could get lost in the pile up.

Whenever you choose to submit your release, make sure you follow up with someone in the newsroom to make sure they received it.

Remember a few weeks ago when I posted the question, "What would you ask me if we were on the phone right now?" Well, one of the questions I received from my Facebook circle was, "Do you still have a mentor or person you admire in your industry?" Truth be told I have a few people who guide me and help me learn more about Building a Successful Business. As you can tell I have a ton of advice for women starting their own business, so I decided to pick 9 things that I have learned and turn them into the video above entitled, "9 Things Women Entrepreneurs Online Should Know About Buiding a Successful Business". If you can not view this video, click here. After you watch this video be sure to click here and see what LaShanda Henry is working on FOR YOU right now.
