As you read this, hundreds of mice, rats, cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, monkeys, and other animals are dying in cruel and unnecessary medical and product-testing experiments. In fact, 219 animals are killed every minute in a U.S. lab. They die in pain, alone, without a gentle touch or a soothing voice. Animal studies teach us nothing about the health of humans because animals of different species absorb, metabolize, and eliminate substances differently than humans do. The truth is that testing on animals is bad science: It is unreliable and unnecessary.

Dixie Bits does not test its products on animals. Period!

Transitioning without the Big Chop

Deciding to wear YOUR natural hair is among one of the biggest decisions in your life. It’s likely that anyone you inform of your decision will have an opinion be it positive or negative.  Therefore it is VERY important to remember to stay strong, understand that there is A LOT of information out here about natural hair but it’s most important to do your own research. Natural hair blogs such as this are strictly informational, no two heads are alike (even if you share the same hair type) so do your own research on products, MOISTURIZE and PROTECT!

Transitioning without the big chop is a process that allows you to retain some length. Most naturals would say that the most difficult part of the process is styling and maintaining the two textures of hair. For many this is the reason for the big chop, avoiding the transitioning process completely. I’ll share with you some of the tips I learned during my transition, some may work for you and some wont but having the basic information helps. These few tips will become a staple in caring for your curls.

1. Limit the use of shampoo. Co-washing is the process of cleansing the hair without the use of shampoo which is loaded with harsh chemicals that aren’t ideal for natural hair. If you must use a shampoo choose a sulfate free brand.
2. Deep condition regularly, at least 2x a week. This can be done with heat for 15-30 mins or without for an hour or longer. This process allows for added moisture which is VERY important in the maintenance of natural hair.
3. Detangling with conditioner, starting with ends of the hair. Never attempt this process on dry hair rather you are transitioning or fully natural. Using a good conditioner with slip is ideal to help ease the detangling process for those like me (tender headed). Some naturals like me have graduated to finger detangling, eliminating the use of combs and the amount of hair shed.
4. Protective Styling. This is perhaps one of the most important tips to maintaining healthy natural hair, after moisturizing. Some common styles are comb coils, flat twist, two strand twist, twist outs, braids/braid outs, crinkle/ straw sets and the list goes on….
5. Minimize how much you have to handle your hair and trim your ends.  Your hair is more fragile than usual during this process. Personally, I have what I like to call “restless hand syndrome” where I’m constantly twirling my hair on my fingers or pulling out those single knots, which lead to breakage.  Also, invest in a satin bonnet or pillowcase and in some cases you’ll need both.
6. Last but definitely not least. Avoid flat ironing or pressing the new growth or your fully natural hair. This can completely and permanently alter your curl pattern. Possibly delaying the process of transitioning my now making it three textures of hair, your relaxed hair, new growth and the straightened hair. This can also make your curls prone to breakage and severe damage.

Everyone wants to run their own business and be their own boss…. right?
Everyone wants a vacation home in the mountains… right?
Everyone wants 2.4 kids and the white picket fence…. right?

Wrong.

When it comes to dreams, one size most definitely does NOT fit all. Our dreams and goals are as individual as we are, and adopting someone else’s goals as our own can feel like wearing someone else’s shoes: It looks okay to everyone else, but to us, it feels awful and gives us blisters.

There are thousands, if not millions, of people out there striving for the wrong goals. Wrong not because there’s anything inherently bad about them, but wrong because the goals they’re aiming for are wrong for THEM. So as I persevere in my endeavor to empower women I must remain authentic and help you discover your authentic self for your realized empowering success.

There’s the law student that is very gifted in music and enjoys her classes in school leading up to the profession of a lawyer who would never give an extra thought to setting that aside for pursuing her career in music because both of her parents are Lawyers.

There’s the successful saleswoman who would really love to chuck it all and teach English, but she’s making too much money and only a crazy person would throw away a six-figure paycheck.

There are many frustrated individuals out there “believe it or not ” Frustration knows no geographic, socioeconomic, or race or religious boundaries.

The only way to know if the goals you’re aiming for are the right goals is to figure out if they are your heart’s desire. Sometimes it takes some detective work to peel back the layers of societal and family expectations to get at what YOU really want.

There are clues all around you: If you fall asleep dreaming about something, wake up thinking about something, and find yourself perking up whenever you meet someone doing what you’d like to do, you’re on the right track. Meanwhile, if you get a sinking sensation when you pull into the garage of house with the white picket fence, or find yourself calling in sick to that six-figure job “everyone” would kill to have, then you may be in the wrong place… for you.

So what do you do if you find you’ve been chasing after the wrong dream? If you find that you’re not on track to your destiny. You readjust. You discover what your vision is, your purpose in life. You reignite your passion. You connect with someone who can be an accountability partner, who is not biased and can offer expertise in the area you are seeking to move forward in. Even if they don’t have the specific expertise in that area but have the life skills you need to help you discover your authentic self, get unstuck, get focused, make BIG changes and get results that will put you miles ahead of where you’ve been for the last 1 to 5, 5 to 10 years or more!

You find ways to move your current life closer to the one you really long for. Maybe that means getting up an hour early to work on your novel. Maybe it means spending your weekends teaching art to inner city kids. Maybe it researching organizations that may need your expertise and would like you to share with their members. Take a small step and see how it feels. Then take another, and another, until you know deep in your heart you’re on the right track. If you are, the momentum will carry you forward.

You’ll be closer to where you want to be. The Authentic you that is.

The single most successful way to network is with the parents of your children's friends. For those women that have children in elementary and high school, events associated with those schools, are basically an open invitation to network. The PTA is probably one of the best overall groups a woman can join, to successfully network with other like-minded parents associated with the group. Be extremely active and vocal in the meetings, make your presence known. Get involved in fundraising, either by suggesting a fund raising event or participating in a scheduled one.

Any school sponsored activity that your child regularly attends, i.e. organized sports, cheer-leading, music events, plays, is a great way to network with the relative captive audiences that accompanies the students.  Whenever there is a call for a need for parents to volunteer for activities, (i.e., fundraising, sports, chaperoning) or whatever and whenever there is an opportunity to lend a hand, be the first to do so. Right out of the gate you have something in common with the people you will find at these events, they have children that go to your child's school too. Commonality is the strongest selling point, it makes no difference what the product is, yourself or a house. When you go to these events, make sure you talk to people there, about you, and your current skills or services, and what you are working on, and future projects. Make sure you have an ample supply of professionally done business cards with you.

Secret Lover

            Carter Perry’s world had turned upside down when he found out that his wife of four years had being keeping a secret behind his back.

            Carter suspect Keisha had been sleeping around with his younger brother, Donte. In order to have the proof he needs to catch them in the act, he put a plan in motion. He tells his wife that he has to go out of town for a business meeting. What she doesn’t know is that Carter never left the city but stay around to spy on her. He finally catches them together, but to his surprise it wasn’t his brother! Follow Carter as his rage leaves him to commit double murder.

Everybody has a secret! What’s yours?

Tell a modern day woman to “submit” to her husband and you might as well start walking towards the planks because Davie Jone’s Locker is where her words will send you; it is almost a form of blasphemy – that word. It has also been unforgivenly assigned the meaning of “obey,” hence, its removal from contemporary wedding vows and in marriages. No one, it seems, wants to be told what to do.

I am currently teaching a women’s literature course and one of the texts I’ve elected to have us read is the “Book of Ruth.” Raised in a pentecostal church, I was always taught to believe that women were to “submit” to their husbands because the Bible said so: women were inferior to men. But I’ve come to the conclusion after analyzing this text and other works by women – as well as life experiences – that the word “submission” has been taken out of context.

Submission means understanding and accepting one’s value and place within the context of a relationship to bring forth a desired outcome or goal of said relationship. When Ruth lay at the feet of Boaz, at the urging of Naomi, it was not because she was being taught to be inferior to Boaz. Naomi understood, as did Ruth later on, that in order to protect and bring forth the future, she had to “submit” herself in order for it – the future and its generations – to come to pass. It was wisdom that made Ruth and Naomi “submit,” not inferiority. This is where modern day teachings of this word have fallen short.

Women are not inferior to men or men inferior to women; but rather, in order for a relationship to reach its full zenith and to be productive, the couple must come to understand and acknowledge that each has a value and place within the context of the relationship, and that no one is more valuable than the other. Scripture says that man is the head of the home, but the woman is the neck. Neither can operate fully and functionally without the other.

I call for a closer look at the word “submission.” It has been assigned a negative meaning because it has been taken out of context and made an instrument of the fight for power between the sexes, hence, the severe impact on modern day marriages. When Boaz awoke to find Ruth at his feet, he did not gloat or proceed to enforce domination over her. Rather, he said to her that she was a “virtuous woman,” and restored to Ruth what was rightfully hers: her home. And so begins not only one of the most famous love stories ever, but the opening of the door of the future which would bring forth David.

We must learn to submit to the will of the force which embraces and binds our relationships: to obey the spoken and unspoken rules of engagement in a true and fruitful relationship. Arguing and fighting for control and domination does not bode well a bright future nor does it allow room for wisdom.

Coca−Cola Scholars Program
WHEN TO APPLY: The application is currently open. Initial Applications are accepted through Oct 31, 2011 of the senior year in high school.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
1. Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet the eligibility requirements may apply each year for one of 250 four-year, achievement-based scholarships.

2. Approximately 2,200 applicants will be selected as Semifinalists and notified by mail and email around December 1. Semifinalists must then complete a secondary application, including essays, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Semifinalist applications are due by mid-January. Our Program Review Committee will select 250 Finalists to advance to the final interview phase. Notifications are sent mid-February.

3. In April, the 250 Finalists are invited to Atlanta for personal interviews. The Finalists are interviewed by a National Selection Committee representing outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts. 50 students are then designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college; 200 students are designated as Regional Scholars and receive awards of $10,000 for college.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

APPLICANTS MUST BE:
• CURRENT high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States (or select DoD schools);

• U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Temporary Residents (in a legalization program); Refugees; Asylums; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees;

• anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application;

• planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution;

• a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

• APPLICANTS MAY NOT:

• be children or grandchildren of employees, officers or owners of Coca−Cola bottling companies, The Coca−Cola Company, Company divisions or subsidiaries.
