Last week, I wrote an introductory post on the series I will be sharing with you over the next few weeks, about the power of having an effective content marketing strategy. Part One begins today on the topic of Article and Blog Posts and a few tips on how to get the most out of sharing your content.

Tip # 1 – Know the purpose of your article – Before you even begin to write for the sake of getting a blog post up, you have to have a purpose for writing your article. When you are in the process of deciding on your content, it should be attached to a bigger strategy. Determine ahead of time, what the next step will be for the reader – the call to action.

  • Who is the audience you are writing for?
  • What solution are you providing them?
  • What is the desired result you expect?

I have created a group on Facebook for Women of Color Direct Sellers!  I want to connect with women from various companies to support one another.  I feel that the direct selling world offers a wonderful opportunity for everyone to have to their own business with out some of the challenges of starting one from scratch.  I want this group to be a place to share ideas, uplift, and support one another.

We may even enjoy each others products and can provide our own shopping circle.  It can also be a great place to add recruits so they can gain knowledge of our businesses.

Join me today, Friend me on Facebook and tell me your business and you can join the group!

Just an FYI the group is not for advertising or heavy marketing for selling or recruiting!

The Battle Begins: You Vs You

Are you ready to rumble? While I was working on my latest launched project "SistaSense Monthly (a 12 month audio newsletter)" I out of the blue started writing down phrases like "Hater Vs. Motivator", "Giver Vs Keeper", "Dreamer Vs Doer", "Wish Vs Work", "Fear Vs Fair" until I literally had so many of these on the page I had to stop and figure out what I was subconsciously getting at. Prepping for this new 12 month series all I could think about were these Internal Battles that we all must face with our inner selves.

At the time I was also thinking about New Year's Resolutions and how most people break them. I also thought about how easy it is to say, "man the year just flew by" and "God I hope this year will be better" BUT how much actually does change for us over the course of a year without us going through Internal Battles. Change does not come without the act of making a change. We don't just fall into things and I for one don't plan on waiting for things to fall into place because if/when they do I might not be here. Making every day count is the KEY but man is it a hard key to grasp!

2012 began and I was in a mini-funk. I wanted to stay in holiday / vacation mode. I wanted but didn't want to wrap up the launch of my new Money,Marketing, and Motivation Series. I needed to wrap up client projects, but couldn't find the time OR the energy to fit it in without all the battles going on in my head, literally keeping me in bed curled up with my Kindle wishing life could be just a little easier, a little less REAL.

But I gave myself that time to work through those internal battles and work on as much "work" as I could until now week 2 of year 2012 I am re-energized and ready to get back to doing what I do best "sharing those life lessons that make sense to me with you". I say this all to say outside of all the New Year New You Resolutions talk I wanted to talk about the truth. Truth is we can sometimes be our worst enemy. We can often times think ourselves out of our blessings. We can some times fill ourselves with disabling fear preventing us to really move forward as God intended "SO Eyes Wide Open" I go into 2012 knowing that it's time to rumble. I, you, we are all about to get KNEE deep in "You Vs You" Internal Battles, which will define how well each of us actualize the change that we desperately seek when this year ends and a new one begins.

I am ready to battle it out, so you'll be receiving an on going series from me on the Internal Battles we will all face this year (some of them I mentioned above). The first battle that started off my list was my "Elimination Vs Evolution" video. Point blank, I've watched hundreds if not thousands of black business / web business owners succumb to elimination these past few years while I've been able to stick around in large part because every year I go through an evolution process.

Right now you and your business are at a crossroads. You can either learn how to evolve and fight the odds or prepare for elimination (lost sales, suspended domains, websites gone and forgotten). I created the "Elimination Vs Evolution" video because I have some real eye openers to share with my fellow entrepreneurs who actually want their business to be around come 2013. I for one am in it to win it and I hope you are too!

That is all I have to say for today. I hope you enjoyed my 1st 2012 Motivational / Informational rant (lol). Be sure to watch the video and learn about my new 12 month audio newsletter + leave me a comment ... what do you think about my points on the significance of Internal Battles? Are there any battles you are preparing to fight this year?

There she was standing at the top of this long staircase.  She looked beautiful, she wasn't wearing a wig, that was her real hair.  I could tell the difference and she didn't look frail and chaulky gray.  Her cheeks were full and had color to them.  She was mommy again.  Her smile was so radiant too, she wasn't sad like she had been recently.

I was so happy to see her, I needed to run to her and wrap my arms around her.  I started to run up the stairs to meet her but then something happened that caught me off guard.  My mother raised her voice at me.  She never did that before and her smile was gone, she looked like she was suddenly frightened or trying to save or protect me from something.  "NO" she said, and with disbelief in a wimpering voice I said but Mommy I want to go with you, please I'm going to be a good girl, please take me with you.  "No" she said, you can't go with me this time."  Why Mommy?  Why?  My mother then said "I need you to listen to me, will you do that for Mommy?"  In a trembling voice, trying not to cry I said yes Mommy I'm listening.  "I want you to be a good little girl for Mommy, I want you to listen to your Daddy and do what he tells you to do like a good little girl."  I said I will Mommy, you know I will.  "I want you to also pay attention to your grandparents, will you do that too."  Yes, Mommy,  I suddenly had this deep feeling of loss, like something was sucking the life out of me, something was wrong and I didn't know how to deal with it or fix it.  Trying to be a good girl, trying to be a big girl.  Then suddenly I said NO, I WANT TO GO WITH YOU MOMMY and then she very sweetly and lovingly said to me "you can't go baby, Mommy needs you to be a good girl, I need you to be strong and I need you to look out for your younger brother and sister."  She then said I love you.  I said I love you too Mommy. Then she turned away and went through the door and like magic the staircase and the door disappeared.

Then I was startled by the front door slamming.  It was my father.  I ran up to him and told him the sad news.  I said Daddy, Mommy isn't coming home this time.  "STOP" my father shouted, I thought to myself wow both of them yelled at me for the first time in today.  My father said "don't say that, Mommy is going to get better and she'll come home like she always have."  Then with tear filled eyes I looked at my father and told him no she won't not this time, she left and she wasn't coming back.  Then my father looked at me and said, "she has to come home, she has to, we need her."  I then realized I had to stop crying and had to do what my mother asked me to do before she left.  It was time for me to be a good big girl for my Daddy, my brother and my sister.

Lois Zenobia Jenkins passed October 1968.  She was 22 and I was 4.  And to this very day deep inside of me is their is that same little 4 year old girl trying to be a good girl tying to be a big girl.

Project Success

Success is never accidental. It is intentional and happens divinely on purpose. Success is the direct end result of a 3 step equation:

Vision + Planning + Execution =Success

Looks and sounds pretty simple, right? Well, I won’t sit here and say you won’t have variables along the way because you will and in the world of project management we even make a plan for that too. But in some ways, reaching success really is that simply. And this is how we do it:

  • Create the vision. Visualize the life that you. Determine what success looks like in your world and write it down.
  • Create the Plan. Plans are simply an outline of how we are going to get to where we are to where we want to be. You must have a blueprint for your business. Even the most skilled architect does not begin working on a building without at the bare minimum sketching of a design. Your plan or design for your business must be written down and easily accessible. Plans are mean to be modified as needs and sometimes even visions change.
  • Execute! Let’s face it, what good is a plan that is just sitting on your desk or on a computer file and it isn’t being executed? Put target dates by particular goals within your plan, in project management we call those milestones. And most importantly, get to work! Having someone to be accountable to is always great way to insure milestones are being meet and you are on target to reach your goals.

Without a clear vision, proper planning and execution you will find yourself spinning your wheels and spending countless hours and pouring countless resources into a black hole. Many of us have heard this particular bible verse at some point in our lives:

Proverbs 29:18 “Without a vision, the people will perish”.

The same holds true for your business. Without a vision, without a plan, without proper execution of the plan – you will not reach the level of success that you say that you want.

As a small business owner, no one says you have to do any of these steps alone. Develop a team of like-minded friends and family to assist you. There are also wonderful companies, such as Empress (I know shameless plug), that will help you define your vision and create your plan, and will provide support through the process.

Twanna Gill is an experienced project manager, small business consultant and the owner of Empress.  Empress is a virtual business solutions company offering administrative, project and business management services to small businesses.  For more information, please visit our website at www.virtualempress.net.

Black women can’t get married, black women are getting fat, black women are ugly, black women are suffering mental health issues, black woman took a relentless bashing in 2011. I was appalled to she not only the discriminatory material published on black women but more so at the frequency. What is this obsessive interest in the failings of black women?

Two the most offensive pieces seen on black women in 2011 was the report published by Pyscology today, labelling on accounts of scientific research that black women are the ugliest women of all the races and then just recently the Dutch magazine that referred to the singer Rihanna in the title of the article as the "Ultimate Niggabitch". Unbelievable, unacceptable and just racist. Would such defamatory material be published on white, muslim, jewish, or women of other races? Black women are no lower or less deserving of respect than any other race.

10744075470?profile=original

The main areas of this anti-black woman media bashing.

Social research is often not a matter of finding truth or fact but instead finding evidence to support a pre-decided theory, where the truth is bent to fit the theory and not the theory to fit the truth. The point here is not that all these reports are lying and that there are not marital issues within the black community or an increase in obesity, however the facts are presented in a jaundiced manner. It’s easy to say that 42 percent of black women are not yet married, if in that 42 percent women under the age of sixteen are included or if the two to one ratio of men to women is not taken into account. Further, didn’t marriage rates decrease and divorce rates increase across the board in western society? This is not a problem unique to the black community and we do not have a monopoly on social vices.

There are so many reports that take social vices and concentrate on pointing out the black community as the black sheep, when many of such vices are shares across all races. However, the media presents its reports in a way that leaves the question in the readers mind of “what’s wrong with black women?”

"Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position so as to benefit oneself or one's group." - Wiki

I’m concerned that a terrible impression of black women is being moulded. Common misconceptions of black women are being exaggerate and exploited by the media, putting the black women more than 50 years behind time. Black women must stand and step out of the shadow of prejudiced judgment.

In Love & Marriage: Happy Black Women Would be Bad for Media Business, writer Theresa Lasbrey argues that the media launched an “anti-black woman campaign” to counter the image of the Obamas. She writes that the media screams, “The Obamas are not the norm! Do not dream of this for yourself! It is just coincidence that in 2011 every month came with some form of anti black woman report or “study”?

Such media slurs promote self-hate and batters the esteem of black women. We are constantly being told that something is wrong with us, that black men don’t love us, that we are fat, ugly, stupid, loud, poor, difficult etc. Worse still this persistent negative bashing has both blacks and whites believing that there is something wrong with black women in particular.

In surveys of predominantly white participants, negative results are reported as an increase in "something" of women, not an increase of "something" in “white” women. Why so race specific when a particular social vice is high in the black community although it is present for all races such as decrease in marriage and increase obesity.

The situation worsens when black people join the anti-black woman media campaign. The Denzel Principle: Why a Black Woman Can’t Find a Good Black Man, blames black women for setting their standards too high, being too picky, not just settling for any man that sets eyes on them.

Unfortunately, we tend to believe that publications in books or reputable newspaper means that the information must be a valid source of truth. Perhaps that was the case some years ago, but in our times, it’s more often a valid source of someones opinion, as seen by the following popular media outlets.

The Nightline multi-part special entitled “Why Can’t a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?” again blames the character and goals of black women as the hinderance to us finding a man.

The Economist article, Sex and the Single Black Woman: How The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men Hurts Black Women, contributes to the scare campaign.

The Media should to be held accountable for publishing content promoting racial discrimination and Black Media needs to stop assisting the character assassination of its own people and instead writing about solutions where problems exist.

Say “No More”, to anti-black woman media bashing by signing this petition created by All Black Woman. We have already addressed the petition to some of the most outrageous publications of 2011 and intend to name and shame those who would continue such discriminatory behaviour in 2012 by adding them to the petition list. Black Sista will be watching!

The Skinny on Skincare: Super foods

superfoods%20sign.jpg

Super foods is the name given to a diverse group of foods found in nature. They are loaded with antioxidants, which has the ability to get rid of free radicals, resulting in less disease, great skin and longer life.
Super foods can be found in, fruits, herbs, dark green leafy veggies and sea weed. Of course, by no means should you rely solely on these foods for all the nutrients that your body needs. Incorporating them in your diet, regularly, will help in the fight against disease and premature aging. In addition, it won't hurt to use skin care products that contain super food extracts because, when applied directly to the skin, the antioxidants are readily absorbed into the cells.
Examples of super foods include
  • strawberries
  • gogi berries also called wolfberry
  • acai
  • spurilina
  • beans
  • pomegranate
  • blueberries
  • oats
  • oranges
  • broccoli
  • soy
  • spinach
  • salmon
