Are you a work at home workaholic?

Thing 1: Can you tell I am getting chunky in the face! Now that I don't live in NY... too much driving, not enough walking! Lord knows my head is big enough, I don't need any more chunk to make it look bigger (lol). Alright, let me stop being silly ... do you see the earrings I am wearing in the picture above, purchased from Randall V Designs? Debra, the creator of this beautiful line, is giving away 5 pairs of earrings right now! If you want to grab a pair, enter the giveaway.

Thing 2: I was watching one of the latest episodes of The Office and in one scene everyone is trying to figure out if there is anything Stanley actually notices. If you watch the show, Stanley is one of those characters who hates his 9-to-5 but keeps going so he can make it to his retirement plan. Anyhoo, through out the day his coworkers do ALL this crazy stuff to get his attention and NOTHING ... its like he is completely unaware of his surroundings and then all of a sudden he jumps up, looks at his watch, looks at the office clock and goes, 'Oh know, that clock his slow, its 5 o' clock. Time to go home!" At that point I'm busting a gutt, because he clearly ignores everything at work except the minute its time to go home.

When you work at home of course, there is no watching the clock. Further more, there is no getting paid for not working! As nice as it is to wake up when I want, that perk also comes with working for as long as it takes to get the job done. Short of the dinner bell ringing, its so easy and sometimes necessary to work 60+ hours a week. This is especially true when clients send emails at all hours of the night and day often expecting a response asap, which makes it so easy to feel compelled to glue yourself to your laptop or phone BUT trust me when I say, you have to fight that feeling. At one point last year I was working myself so hard I didn't realize my body was giving out on me until I pretty much lost my voice and couldn't move my neck. At that point I realized if my body gives out, I can't do anything, so something had to give.

Right now, I'm writing this while on a mini-vacation with the family in Willamsburg Virginia. I've barely posted anything on SistaSense OR the BlackParenting blog all week and I am SO overdue for my next Blogalicious post BUT this past week its really been about stepping back, doing behind the scenes work, and getting ready for my sons birthday. I just wanted to drop you a quick line, letting you know why I've been gone for a few days and why you sometimes have to go away for awhile too.

Until I get back to writing new stuff, remember to read my story, download my holiday guide, and checkout the latest discussions on BBWO.

OH ... ONE MORE THING ... remember the earrings I am wearing in the picture above were purchased from Randall V Designs. Debra, the creator of this beautiful line, is giving away 5 pairs of earrings right now! If you want to grab a pair, enter the giveaway.

  • LaShanda,

You are so right about how you can just sit for hours at the computer working. The next thing you know, time has past you by and other things that you thought you were going to do today, like a family project with your child, gets pushed back because, "you have to get this done to get income coming it". But isn't the reason most of us work from home is because we want to spend more time with our family?

I had to take a look at myself this last day or 2 and realize, that I spend soooo much time working on business, that my children are missing ME.

So I plan to sit back and work out a schedule so that I can give quality time to both family and business, because my goal is to have a successful business, but what is more important to me is my health and my family!
    • I completely agree, Tieast. My goal is to honor GOD in everything I do. Clearly, neglecting home and family is not honoring Him. When I feel myself getting stressed and overwhelmed with all that it takes to start and operate a successful business, I remember this: GOD will make provision for the vision. When the sales and revenue goals aren't being met and when no new leads are coming in, us Believers should have Faith and Trust that everything is going to work out for our good. We don't have to work ourselves to death. We just need to put forth our best effort and GOD will take care of the rest.
