As a business coach and consultant, I am always interested in the small business owner's perspective in how you view the Employee Handbook as a integral resource for minimizing employee risk. Do you currently use the employee handbook as a valuable tool for supporting your risk management objectives?

Would love to hear your perspective small business owners!

  • I strongly agree that every business should have an employee handbook.  I am a consultant for child care centers.  There are so many centers who have what they believe is an "employee handbook", only to realize that some of the information contained in the handbook is unlawful.  They copy information they find and don't realize that they must be familiar with national, state and local laws.  There is no cheap way to developing an employee handbook!  I encourage all employers to do your research.  Even if you hire someone to develop the handbook for you, it is necessary that you know the laws as well!

  • Yes, yes, yes! IT has helped me to clearly communicate with my employees what my expectations are as far as codes of conduct, productivity and appearance. It has helped to minimize issues and misunderstandings between myself and my employees regarding disciplinary issues.

I would say, an clear, thorough, up to date employee manual is essential to a small business owner that has employees. Whether its one employee or many, this is an invaluable tool.

  • Hi a word: "Absolutely"

Regardless of how many employees you have, it's important to be clear on expectations, rules , etc within your business. Even if you are just getting started.

    • Hi Katrina,

Great to hear "Absolutely"!  You would be amazed at the number of small busineses that I have encountered that don't have it. The risk is "huge" without one! This is why I wanted to get other small business owner's perspectives!
