It's been 7 months and counting and I'm still unemployed. I want to write but I'm wary about these freelance writing opportunities. I ask people for tips/assistance but they keep giving me the run around. I'm praying and I'm hoping for a serious break through but...why do I feel so despondent? :\

  • Thank you so much Cynthia!! That was really kind of you. I have bookmarked your site. Once my book is completed, I will email you. I project it to be finished by fall/winter
  • My book hasn't been materialized yet and it's going to be in physical form though. Much appreciated :-)
  • Hi,

It will work out for you. One of the things that is so important and for you to focus on is positive energy and a positive mindset. I am a strong believer of what you think of and place in your thoughts will come to you.

    God Bless!

  • I have a job, but I can completely understand where you are coming from. Whether you have a job or not, being at the mercy of others (waiting for a job to come, or waiting for the right job to come) can cause us to become frustrated and despondent. I have found that making your own way for yourself is more self-fulfilling than waiting on the next person to come along and offer something that may or may not be worth considering.

Now, making your own way may not be easy at first especially if the bills are already piling up, but I so believe that you can do it. There is a book called Moonlighting on the Internet that I am currently reading that talks about ebooks and other tools that you can use from home to make money doing exactly what you want to do. If you are like me and can't really afford to buy every interesting book you come across, hit the library. The library is my new best friend and it is FREE!

As a first time blogger and eventually apparel designer, it is hard, but it is so rewarding and I have yet to make any money, but I know that God is good and that the money will come! Stay strong and be encouraged by the women that our surrounding you here!!!

  • I finished graduate school a year ago and I am still unemployed. I first i felt annoyed, sad, etc, but I saw opportunity out of my difficulties. I started writing on my blog, I started my own business, got involved on twitter and facebook. I joined a creative writing course. I found a few websites that I could make money off my writing. I found a few authors that are looking for submission for anthologies and magazines.

You have to stop looking for the break through and make yourself your own breakthrough.

Once you start doing your own thing, things start falling into place. Now I have people asking me to help them with ventures, write, etc.

Just stay positive and look beyond the unemployment. Go back into history, during the Great Depression is when great ideas and innovative thoughts came out. Now, use this economic situation to do the same.
    • I want to write for a living but I don't know where to begin. There are alot of shady writing opportunities that are floating around. Do you have any help pointers/tips in mind? Thanks
      • I started off just blogging. I looked up different blogger platforms like wordpress, blogger, tumblr, etc and chose the one I felt best for my personality. This blog was just me writing my thoughts and stories (www.anewm00n.blogspot.com) Writing on this blog led me to my idea for the book I am currently working on. I joined a creative writing class at a nearby college and got some pointers on how to publish etc.

Then from there I started my own website based on my interests. I started an online store- people can purchase services or ebooks. I started a twitter account, youtube, facebook fan page, etc. Through my website and other social media platforms, I am able to write and reach out to over 500+ subscribers. You can start by just writing ebooks. (www.closedlids.com)

I also found this other site through my friend. You write and then get paid for your content based on views. I just started writing on this site, so I haven't made any money yet, but for me it is more about get exposure and practicing my writing. My accomplishments so far- I am high ranked on search engine results, people are retweeting my work, and people are making comments. So it is a start. (http://www.bukisa.com/people/LMarie)

I also found a few magazines that look for volunteer writers. (http://liberatormagazine.com/)

The most important thing is to research. read blogs/website, go to the library, etc. I read many different books on blogging, website building, marketing, etc

You said "I want to write for a living but I don't know where to begin" I say, if you know what you want then just start. where can begin is just writing down your thoughts, submitting your pieces to magazines, newspapers, blogs, facebook, etc. Look on craigslist/jobboards for people looking for journalist.

        • Wow! Thank you. You just encouraged me and confirmed that I'm headed in the right direction. I'm an author/writer as well and I've been considering submitting to other blogs/sites/magazines etc. However I've been second guessing myself a little because the scene is new. But when you said, "..just start." that reassured me. Thanks for the indirect encouragement my sista.
        • Thank You Sis! :-)
