Spamming Your Business/Ads in Online Communities Does Not Work! PERIOD

Online social networking sites are becoming more popular each day and not just for services and personal connections.

Sites like ning.com and facebook.com have gained ground as business-oriented building blocks.

These online communities are built around members that join them and one of the most important activities in growing a business is growing relationships with others in the communities.

Sadly and due to poor internet marketing education a large percentage of the members spend their time spamming their business information in forum boards, groups, mass emails and even blogs.

Yes as a spammer, you “might” get a few business sales or recruits a year but in the long term you are destroying your business reputation.

As the saying goes, provide value and you will receive value, provide spam and you will be spammed.

It's up to you.

People lose interest in you and no longer pay attention to what you post so you are wasting your time.

It is very rare that people will want do business with anyone who joins a community and just spams business ads. Who are you?

People join and buy from people whom they know, like and trust.

What people are looking for is who you are and what you're about.

So how do you properly network in these sites?

  1. Offer value! For example, if you are selling Health and Wellness products write about the ingredients and how they can benefit the reader instead of “buy this juice or join this great business ads”
  2. Be yourself and express yourself do not hide behind banner ads and links.
  3. Become a leader and expert who can offer valuable material that members in the communities can benefit from.
  4. Start a topic about something that interests you.
  5. Ask questions you may have or answer to questions posted by other members
  6. Join in conversations that are of interest to you and make some meaningful comments.

Don’t waste your time spamming.

Follow these 6 steps and you will get more respect and positive results than just posting the same old ads over and over!

Well put, Jessica! It is unfortunate that people join networking sites, such as this one, only to SPAM and not provide any real value at all. Yes, we all want to grow our customer base and we'd like our networking to aid in our efforts and generate some leads. But, it is all in the way you go about it.

Thanks for the post!
Lavada,

Sadly people don't take the time to study what Networking means and think that spamming is the only way to generate leads.

Thanks for the comment.

You're welcome. Another thing is being available to truly "touch" others as much as you can. LaShanda does this in a fabulous way through blogging, her eBooks, videos, etc. With so many members, you can sometimes lose sight of the personal touch and the relationship building but she's doing a great job. When I started my network (NBWEN), I was glad to have this as a starting point and there's so many women out there still to be reached!!
Paradise,

I agree. Giving back and changing other peoples lives is very rewarding.

We have something in common! I have my own network too Home Biz Connection and was inspired by LaShanda.

Let's keep in touch and continue to touch as many people as we can.

As a Ning owner myself I see a lot of this it is wrong. it turns people off. Take the time to get to know people.
Glenda,

Most people are not educated when it comes to online networking and they spam thinking its the proper way to get leads.

As Ning owners we can continue to encourage personal touch while networking online :)

Wishing you a great weekend.

Your are correct they do not and this is why I started my new network called Small Business Resource Center is to help others build relationships both online and off by offering them the tools to do this. I would love it if you all would check it out and give me your feedback as its a work in progress. We have classes and homework for them to do. http://www.SmallBusinessResourceCenter.com is the site.
Hi Glenda,

I will take a look at your site and email you feedback this weekend.

Thanks.

I think we need to know the true definition of spam. Webester defines spam as : unsolicited usually commercial e-mail sent to a large number of addresses. You can only spam someone thru e-mails. Which I can say sometimes social networks send me to much spam too. But they give me the option where I turn it off. It becomes irritating when someone keeps sending unwanted spam in my e-mail and I can't turn it off. I think spamming comes on both sides from members and owners too. Now sometimes people advertise their business in communities which might not reflect the topic. But as a group owner you should always specify no advertisement in their community but it's not spam. I know some sites that I'm on there are so many ads it's ridiculous. They are popping up at the bottom bar and things are at the top of the screen and when you get slightly close to them they popout and say will you take this short survey. If they have an e-mail marketing system that sends out tons e-mail to people that is spam but hopefully they ask for your approval. Because they want to sell you their products or services. It's still spam whether it's approved or not. We all should be considerate about the spam we send out. Instead try to build lasting relationships with people. If someone e-mails me and doesn't know my name or my company then they don't know me. And solicit their products or service and hasn't built a relationship with me on their network or group I delete the message. Because that's not building a relationship that's spam www.uniquic.com www.unonline.spruz.com
