Social networks are fabulous business building tools, IF you know how to use them. However, if you are not careful, all of your time and energy may be wasted if you commit the following social networking faux pas: 1. Not creating a good profile. Be 100% clear about who you are AND what you do. 2. Failing to brand You, Inc. Social networking is "social". The point is for people to get to know you first and foremost. You know the adage- "People buy from those they know and like." Let them get to know you! 3. Not establishing yourself as an expert. This is your time to shine! Post blogs and forum topics to show your business acumen. Build your brand- YOU, INC. Your business(es) are only extensions of your brand. Invite others to your networks so that they can see the extent of your knowledge. 4. Subscribing to the broken record method. You've met that person that only posts their business information. Whether it is as a greeting or answering a totally unrelated blog, they will find a way to post their business information. This is not an effective way to gain business. In fact, this is a fantastic way to alienate other members of the network.

  • Hello BlackSynergist,

Number 4 is a killer. I've joined sites and people will greet me which I like. It lets me know the site is active and that somebody cares enough to check me out. Then there are the ones that leave a huge picture of their business and glittery pictures in the message. That is too pushy.

    Thank you for the tips!

  • Thanks!
    • Great Post,
I couldn't agree more. It's so irritating when you join a social network and you get bombarded with solicitations before you complete your profile!
