About Me:

Welcome! My name is Melanie Matthews, founder and lead consultant of Literacy@Work. We strive to provide professional development that ensures that all teachers become effective teachers. We also strive to strengthen the leadership skills of administrators. I began presenting as a classroom teacher. Soon after, I became a Literacy Coach where one of my many job requirements was to present to teachers at the school and district levels. After presenting at the Michigan Reading Association's annual conference, I knew this was what I wanted to do. Soon after, Literacy@Work was formed. My experience and training has helped me tremendously as a presenter and consultant. With over a decade of teaching and coaching experience, I've taught in elementary and middle schools and served as literacy coach at the elementary level. I earned a BA from Marygrove College and a M.Ed from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. I'm a certified teacher with a Reading Specialist endorsement, and a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Early and Middle Childhood Literacy: Reading/Language Arts. Currently, I serve as a district ELA Instructional Specialist working with High Priority schools providing professional development based on school data. I believe all educators must stay current in strategies and techniques to improve student achievement. I enjoy what I do and would love to help you extend and enrich your knowledge, skills, and attitudes about literacy instruction so that you can increase your student's learning. I am looking forward to working with you!
