I currently use both and find that affiliate marketing generates me a lot more income then adsense...at this time. You can be successful with affiliate marketing regardless if you have a lot of traffic to your blog or not, it's all about how you market the products.
Before I started getting lots of traffic to my blog, I promoted products via article marketing mostly. I also would recommend the products to those in my circle who I knew would benefit from it.
Once traffic picked up, I did have an increase in affiliate sales because people were now coming to my site to "find" the products I promote.
It's all about your strategy and how you will reach the people who need the product...the adsense are picking up but still nothing major.
