It’s all over the news and the official position of the NY Post is that “Al Sharpton is publicity opportunist”
So the question in the media has becomes is Al Sharpton an opportunist, or do we as Black folk have a right to be outraged?
For those that don’t watch the news, here is a link to the actual cartoon (see http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/17243)
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
Now we won’t talk about the NY Post being owned by Rupert Murdoch of Fox News….we all know their stand on political and racial issues.
But as Rev. Sharpton says; given the historic racist attacks on African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys this cartoon is very troubling.
Oh, and just so you know, the NY Post claims of the cartoon being a clear parody of a current news event…to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut….Doesn’t Hold Water!!!
A. There is no reference, symbol, or badge of the Connecticut police dept.
B. The women that was attacked is nowhere in the picture
C. The cartoon was placed opposite of a picture of President Obama signing the Stimulus Bill
For all practical purposes this could have been a picture of any number of unarmed Black men that have been shot down in the streets by the NY police dept.
So I’m asking you, is the infamous cartoon a parody or a call for assassination??? Are you outraged or do you think it’s funny?

Thanks for the post, Jim. I am proud to be conscientous and sensitive enough to be counted among the many who were offended by the cartoon. During the time Rev. Al Sharpton was staging protests in front of the NY Post building. The Staten Island News ran a article about the protest march and they created a blog to allow readers an opportunity to post comments. After reading the comments from the readers, I post my comments as follows:
"After reading the many insensitive posts of your readers. I feel compelled to reply. Although right off the top, I do wonder why is it, when well meaning black people protests anything - we are out of place. Yet any infraction directed toward the Jewish community is considered to be antisemitic.
I am a black female, former U S Army student helicopter pilot who received flight training at Ft Rucker, AL in the eighties. I recall at the very beginning of the program we had a Flight Platoon leader who had a very offensive poster on his wall behind his desk. The 24"x36" poster was a color photo of a chimpanzee holding a banana hanging from a vine with a caption that read: 'You Can Teach A Monkey To Fly If You Have Enough Bananas!'
For all of you, that believe the Platoon Leader was just an avid animal lover, consider this. At that time, black students represented about 2% of the 1000 white students in the program. In over 25 years of flight training there were only a handul of black aviators in the Army. Of those Black aviators, none were females. Although the program was difficult for all students, each black student aviator could relate their own stories of academic setback, and personal mistreatment and humiliation."
Not only was my reply not posted on the Staten Island News blog, the entire blog was removed form the website altogether like it never existed. Fortunately, I copied the content to read for a later date. I am including Staten Island News (unedited) posting in this blog because I think black people would be amazed to know what some white people actually think about us and the issues that effect us.

Why do certain ethnic groups have to be so sensitive? The cartoon was meant to show that the Stimulus Bill was so bad that a monkey could have wrote it. If people knew their facts they would know that Congress wrote the bill. Their protests if nothing else shows a lack of self esteem and insecurity.

The cartoonist has been accused before of bigotry.The cartoon was tasteless,insulting, and offensive. It's one thing to compare a dead ape to a black man,but to depict our president as a dead ape is despicable.

but i did not see it as a slur against obama. obama is "untouchable" because he's black, so we're not allowed to goof on him because of that one factor. i'm sure he'll make is mistakes and he has foibles just like the rest of us do, and yet, St. Obama will be "untouchable".

I don't often agree with the cockaroach AL, but I do with this. I am not black, but can tell you I definately can feel for black people everywhere over this. I lived through the years of Martin Luther King and the crap that went on down south, and the stereotypical Archie Bunker crap, and this cartoon reeks of it!

i was born in 1987. I've read and learned about racism in school my whole life from all white teachers. I've had many black students in my classes and everyone liked them. I grew up in an era where I've seen michael jordan be the larger then life figure in sports seen as a hero. Rappers and hip hop artists making millions. Powell and Rice superior beings in the US gov. Now a black president which i believe is a greay man. But what I really dont understand is why SOME african americans feel the need to play this race card and be so sensitive about every little thing. Calm down!, we are not against you! stop being so soft about everything that you think is racist. After all...with us (white america) we helped Obama become the president. In theory having the same rights and options in life sounds good….but in reality that is not the standard practice dear….it should be….but it is not….it’s called nepotism....and affirmative action no matter how diligently practiced cannot correct this…..I don’t recall a comic in any newspaper depicting Bloomberg as a holocaust victim or Guiliani as the head of the Cosa Nostra….so why this….people are free to believe what they want but again there is a limit to what can be expressed in newspapers for many reasons….if you are unable to decipher why this is such a problem I suggest that you take a course on race in America….again nothing can compare to the experience but it is apparent that you have a lack of understanding in regard to how important race still is in this country…..Lmao at your theory about my political beliefs…..doesn’t even deserve a response…happy learning!

from my point of view Al Sharpton is the biggest racist there is in this country that actually has a voice in the world. Yes there are racist white people out there but there is just as many blacks. There is no spokesman for the white race out there. BUT AL Sharpton is a spokesman for the black race..why is that allowed? and what i find funny is that he is so PRO-BLACK why does he live in a white neighborhood, why does he send his children to schools that are majority white. I grew up in an era where I've seen michael jordan be the larger then life figure in sports seen as a hero. Rappers and hip hop artists making millions. Powell and Rice superior beings in the US gov. Now a black president which i believe is a greay man. But what I really dont understand is why SOME african americans feel the need to play this race card and be so sensitive about every little thing. Calm down!, we are not against you! stop being so soft about everything that you think is racist. After all...with us (white america) we helped Obama become the president. In theory having the same rights and options in life sounds good….but in reality that is not the standard practice dear….it should be….but it is not….it’s called nepotism....and affirmative action no matter how diligently practiced cannot correct this…..I don’t recall a comic in any newspaper depicting Bloomberg as a holocaust victim or Guiliani as the head of the Cosa Nostra….so why this….people are free to believe what they want but again there is a limit to what can be expressed in newspapers for many reasons….if you are unable to decipher why this is such a problem I suggest that you take a course on race in America….again nothing can compare to the experience but it is apparent that you have a lack of understanding in regard to how important race still is in this country…..Lmao at your theory about my political beliefs…..doesn’t even deserve a response…happy learning!

from my point of view Al Sharpton is the biggest racist there is in this country that actually has a voice in the world. Yes there are racist white people out there but there is just as many blacks. There is no spokesman for the white race out there. BUT AL Sharpton is a spokesman for the black race..why is that allowed? and what i find funny is that he is so PRO-BLACK why does he live in a white neighborhood, why does he send his children to schools that are majority white. Dont get me wrong there isnt anything wrong with those things but for him to do that i find that to be ironic
