Helen Keller, born June 27, 1880 – came into the world with full sight and hearing, until it was suddenly taken away from her through falling ill of what doctors described at that time of “brain fever”, at 19 months old. This illness left her both deaf and blind, but it did not take away her determination to learn and make something of her life.
Her insatiable appetite for learning, despite her lack of sight and hearing eventually led her to become the first blind person to attend and graduate from Harvard University’s Radcliffe College, in 1904. At Radcliffe, with the assistance of her life long teacher and friend Anne Sullivan, she eventually wrote, “The Story of My Life”, which eventually became a classic. This book and many others written by Keller, eventually led her to conduct interpreted lecture tours worldwide, where she spoke of her experiences for various audiences –including President Herbert Hoover, President Kennedy, and King George and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace. Helen Keller’s legacy became that of a philanthropist, a renowned author, and the founder of the Helen Keller International organization; the oldest international NGOs (non-governmental organizations) devoted to preventing blindness and reducing malnutrition in the world.
Ms. Keller didn’t allow her lack of vision or hearing to deter her, instead it drove her to use what she had, to be the best she could be in this life. Her most famous quote is: I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
