When pitching the media to get free publicity it is very important to remember 3 key things:
1.) Know some of the main topics the outlet covers. Nothing is worse than a person who pitches off topic. Be familiar with the reporters' work and compliment them on it.
2.) Don't call during deadlines. Reporters and producers get annoyed when they receive pitches while they are on tight deadlines. Pitch them early in the day instead. You'll get a much better response.
3.) Do your homework and be able to tie your pitch in to something relevant and in the news. This gives you a huge advantage and makes your story much more likely to get covered.
I recently spoke to Geneen Harston on pitching the media. She's a former producer at WVON radio and currently producing for Oprah and Friends on XM Radio. Listen to what she had to say about pitching the media. The clip is about 2 minutes long. Share your thoughts here.
