Good Afternoon Ladies,

I finally found out what I wanted to do....(drum roll)... I want to start my own natural bath and body company. I really enjoy making lotions, lip balm and etc. My question is when I start selling what do I do to protect myself from people who are sue happy. I know my items will have all the ingredients listed and etc p. I am really excited to get the ball rolling, but I want to make sure I am CYAing (Cover my @..) Also, do I have to get some to test my product to certify them  like being FDA or Organic approved or maybe a disclaimer. All ingredients will be natural, but everyone's body is different. Any information that you lovely ladies can give me will me much appreciated.

    • Wow! Thank you! I am very thankful for the help and very excited. Thanks A Lot!
  • Dia, congratulations on finding something you can be happy doing!

Look into establishing an LLC. This will separate you from your business. Also look into business insurance. As the previous person posted, looked into the Indie Beauty Network for more information.

Are you planning on formulating your own products. There are many small business b&b manufacturers that are helping small business b&b retailers, to take the guess work and time out of formulating. These fabulous manufacturers are formulating with natural and organic ingredients. Texasnaturalsupply.com and todieforsoap.com offer formulating, manufacturing, fda compliance, etc services.

I encourage you to read up on the FDA compliance guidelines. I see many small b&b retailers not taking some of the steps when it comes to labeling. http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/CosmeticLabelingLabelClaims/default.htm

    All the best!

    Aromatically,
    Itiel
    • First, I would like to say thank you so much for replying to my post. The information that both of you gave is priceless to me. I am soo excited about getting the ball going. I cant' tell you how much I have been researching and make sure I am doing something unique and different with my products. At this point I am just trying to take my time and make sure I do everything right. I want to thank you two again for the great advice and I most def keep you posted on all my updates with it.
  • Hey Dia!

That's fantastic. Before you get started, you should check out The Indie Beauty Network -www.indiebeauty.com. Its run by Donna Maria Coles Johnson and she even has a tutorial on starting your own cosmetics company. Its a fantastic resource. Many other newbies on the site as well as experienced business owners. Great place for networking and learning more about the industry. Good luck!!
