Questions for Choosing a CPA

As an existing small business or new business you may have decided to shop around for a new CPA now that tax season is over! Here are some great questions to use when screening...

1. What professional organizations do you belong to and how active are you in these organizations?
2. How do you intend to service our business? (Consider if their approach is proactive, innovative and well planned for your present and future needs.)
3. What resources are at your disposal to support us in meeting our business needs?
4. How do you communicate to your small business clients?
5. What specific services do you offer small business clients?
6. Who would be performing the majority of the work on our business?
7. What do you charge for your services?
8. Do you keep your small business clients up to date on significant tax law changes and accounting rule changes?
9. How can my business get the most value from your services?
10. Can you provide “4” small business references?

An ideal CPA will want to know the following information from you, during their data gathering phase of considering you as a potential client.
Be prepared to discuss your objectives, short-term and long-term goals.
Share your expectations of him/her
Ask specific questions about any business or personal financial decisions under consideration
Save yourself unnecessary fees by keeping up-to-date accurate records and not using professional time for routine work
Keep your CPA informed of business or personal changes

Happy searching!
