Hand-Crafted Dolls
About Me:
Brenda's Bashful Babies is an outgrowth of my love of crafting. I began making photo albums for weddings, baby showers and birthdays about 10 years ago. Always on the lookout for something else to do, I came upon, what was called a "Peek-A-Boo" or Time-Out" doll. I was fascinated by these 36" tall dolls, that wore children's clothes. The only problem is that I never saw any that looked like my children and the name "Time-Out" sounded so negative. There wasn't even one doll that resembled a Black child. This bothered me and took me back to the time, many years ago, when I was shopping for a Cabbage Patch doll for my daughter, Jennifer. As I searched the shelves for a Black Baby doll, a little Caucasian child said to her mother, "Here mommy, I want this doll", she was pointing to a Black Cabbage Patch doll. Her mother looked at the doll and then said to her daughter, "Who the h..., wants a Black one?" Well I did. It's been 20 years since that occurence, but I still remember it vividly. I made it a point to always buy my daughter dolls that resembled her, a little Black child. Jennifer's dolls came in all the hues of the African diaspora. From very fair to deep chocolate. Jenny told me that in one of her sociology classes in college they were discussing the types of toys they received as a child. She remarked that she was so surprised to hear that only she and another student were given Black dolls exclusively, when they were growing up. She said she felt proud to say, in front of the whole class, "My mother only bought me dolls that looked like me." I guess something positive did come out of that incident at the toy store so many years ago.
