- Janine Bell Bio
After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Communication in her hometown, Maryland, Janine immediately uprooted her life to the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Her specific area was predominantly inhabited by Hasidic Jews. From the outside looking in, Janine immediately marveled at the sense of community that existed around her. For instance, she noticed Hebrew printed on school buses, police squad cars and ambulances.
Couple this with the existence of a Chinatown, K-town and/or Little Italy in most major U.S. cities. Janine soon realized that the common thread amongst these communities is that the residents support each other. Janine views these as exemplars of what the Black community could and should be. She understands the foundation of any community is cooperative economics. Because of this, she recently created Support Black Businesses- slated to launch early 2011.
{Support Black Businesses (dot com) will initially be a three part website. The main component of the site will be a directory of Black-owned businesses. To supplement the directory there will be a section with statistics and facts that will provide visitors with information that fosters conscious consumerism. The third component of the website is the retail store. There will be merchandise that reads “Support Black Businesses” to promote the company but more importantly put the message into the psyche of all who reads it- if just for a millisecond.}
Janine has always been concerned with the empowerment and advancement of her community. She sees it as one of her utmost responsibilities to lay a foundation for generations to come. Support Black Businesses is simply a manifestation of this responsibility and will be Janine’s legacy. The vision of S.B.B. is to help build a self-sustaining black community complete with economic cohesion and increased ownership. She wants S.B.B. to be a medium that helps create the same sense of community- that is ubiquitous in her neighborhood- for the Black community nationwide. She firmly believes it starts with supporting our own.
