Ok, so, for some reason I always assumed there were only about 5 steps to starting an online business. 1) Decide which products you want to sell. 2) Register your business name. 3) Create your own website. 4) START SELLING! Lol. After purchasing "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" I QUICKLY learned that there was a lot more to starting an online business. I didn't think it would be so costly and time consuming. Well, starting an online business is A LOT cheaper than opening an actual store, but I guess I thought all I'd have to do is buy my products (wholesale) and resale it, lol. I didn't even think about filing taxes for the products, lol. I don't even know the first thing about filing taxes, lol.. Well, at not when include a business in the equation.. I looked at the form I'd have to fill out, and it looks kinda confusing. I learned that there's 6 things I MUST have in order to start a business. 1. Tax ID # 2. Local Business License 3. Seller's permit 4. Register and trademark my business name and domain name 5. I plan on running my business a sole proprietor, so I'll also have to file for that as well. The part that shocked me the most was the fact that I HAVE to register for a business licsense and a business name in the city in which I plan to operate my business. I always thought that was the beauty of having an online business. YOU'RE NOT CONFINED TO ONE LOCATION! I was just wondering, what if I move to another state or city? Would I have to spend another $300-$500 for all the license fees each time I decided to move??? I mean, wtf!? I hope someone responds to this. Because I notice very few ppl participate in the forums. And it's kinda hard to connect with other ppl when other ppl aren't making themselves visible. A lot of times I feel like this site is just for ppl to promote their business (or the company they're working for) and go on about their merry-go way. So, I hope to get some helpful feed back. Thanks! :)

  • Hi Lauren,

I can understand how you feel especially starting a business. I learned about all the fees to but I still continued until I got all done no matter how long it took. Just to answer your question Lauren if you move to another state you will need to obtain new licenses for each state you plan to operate in. Of course you can get quotes online and let people do the leg work for you with licenses I have used the company corporation you can google them to check their ratings. I hope this post is helpful and feel free to connect with me anytime.

    Cheers,

    Charlotte
  • Hi Lauren.

I understand your frustrations. The administrative side of starting a business can be a real headache.

    First to answer your question:
Yes, if you move you will need a new business license for your new city. The good news is that a business license can start as low as $15 to file in some towns (really).

Administrative management (getting things done) for new businesses is my specialty. I offer free consultations to help guide you in the right direction. Call or message me if you need some help!
