About Me:

In the Name of Allah As-Salaam Alaikum, Peace and Greetings "Learn and Teach. Teach and Learn" I like to think of myself as a Hard_Truth Sister. I'm a mother, grand & great-grand mother, at last count there were some 18 grands. Like one of my Most Admired Black Women -- The Great Fannie Lou Hamer, I got involved in the Black Liberation Movement late in like. I've been trying to make up for lost time. One of my Aunts was an interior decorator who worked for herself and taught me that anyone worth their labor would do the same. This made me entrepreneurial-minded since childhood. I think ALL of our young people should be like minded, whether they have a job or not! The mindset should be to work for the benefit and profit of themselves in all aspects of life. And , in my view, its never too late to start. My mantra is Thank God for the Web! My children caused me to venture into the field of nursing starting in 1965. Along the way I've developed an appreciation for wholistic methods of healing with particular emphasis on the principles of eating to live. In my view the health of our families begins (or ends) on our kitichens -- the preparer of food being a Kitchen Scientist. It is my view that healing and weillbeing is compreshensive: Physical, mental, emotionsl, spiritual and academic -- in a much as our knowledge allows us to learn and act on and sort out data. Again, the web is a vital research tool which gives your fomgers the ability to do the walking all over the world from your desktop! This is a true blessing, one which would have caused my ancestors to marvel. Peace and Blessings, Sister Halimah Allah, HTS

    DEVELOPMENT-GHANA:
    Women Ideal Shea Butter Producers

SAGNARIGU, Jun 11 (IPS) - "Wherever I went, they laughed at me and called me 'Habiba the empty mouth.' I was always embarrassed," says 45-year-old Habiba Alhassan. "I could not afford to smile; I could not open my mouth in public, when I took photographs I had to close my mouth so that I wouldn't look ugly."
With all her front teeth missing, Alhassan was an object of mockery in her village, Sagnarigu, in the northern region of Ghana. Too poor to afford artificial teeth, she seemed destined to live with the embarrassment for life. "My petty trade in cocoa drinks was hardly enough to feed me let alone replace my lost teeth," she said.

But all that changed early last year, when she joined a rural women's cooperative producing soap from shea butter. In less than six months, she was able to save more than $300 from her earnings to replace the missing teeth. "Nobody believed me when I said I was determined to replace the missing teeth, now I have done it," Habiba said proudly.

The cooperative, known as the Ideal Woman Shea Butter Producers and Pickers Association is the product of a poverty eradication initiative for rural women in Northern Ghana. The initiative is backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Japanese government under the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). TICAD is a global framework for collaboration between Asia and Africa to promote economic development in Africa.
