It's not who you know, but who knows you

As entrepreneurs, it is important that we find ways to get people talking about what we do. It could be the best product or service in the world, but if no one knows about it, the business won't grow.As I continue to network throughout NYC, I am reminded of that. I attended a networking event last night, and made a lot of good connections. Now I have to make sure I stay in the minds of these people. So I will spend tomorrow following up with them. After all, it's about who knows me. And it's my job to make sure as many people as possible know me and connect my name with the idea of "proactive marriage".I have learned that there are MANY ways to get my name out there and have been a bit overwhelmed by the plethora of choices. It's been a struggle not to jump on the next good idea. Blogging, podcasting, articles, newsletters, brochures, postcards, pens, press kits, pitching to the media, Facebook, MySpace, BBWO, Twitter, networking events, etc., etc., etc. I have had to slow down and think about what are the best options for ME and the business. They are all great ideas, but I can't do them all - at least not well.I am still deciding which options are the right ones, right now. In a year or two, I may make some changes or additions to my marketing plan, but for now I have to KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetie)www.NatashaCrawford.com

  • How right you all are! First impressions are important and follow-up essential.

I write my notes on the back of business cards while on the subway as I'm headed home. The person is still fresh in my mind and I get to make use of the travel time.
  • So true, So true. One tip I learned was to write a brief description or a memorable trait on the back of their business card. Plus where you met them; so when you do follow up, and remember a little something about that person, they will be pleased that they left an impression, and that you noticed.
  • I do agree it is about who knows us. And, the interesting thing is knowing the affect we have on people. We must always represent because people remember the first impression we make with them. So, even when we aren't in a business mode, we still have to be aware of what we do and say because image is everything.
  • It would be great if we could start to share what promotional tactics work best for each of us, in the discussion forum. I encourage someone else to start this one, I think I've started quite a few. It is also important to note that even though certain tactics might work perfectly for one person, its almost impossible to copy them to the tee because we each have our own unique styles, businesses, and personalities.
  • Timely follow-up and self promotion are so important. And yes, there are so many ways to go about doing it. I have found that works best for me is trying everything at least once, and analyzing it's effectiveness. In doing so I've been able to narrow down my best marketing strategies while at the same time keeping myself open to new things.
