Choose to Vote

In its infancy, the lawmakers in the United States of America only granted the right to vote to a privileged few.  Males of European descent who had wealth were the only ones allowed to elect government representatives.  It took nearly two hundred years for the country to grow up and realize that a true democracy required that all of its citizens have the right to vote.  The Voting Rights Act of 1965 guarantees that right; that all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or financial status, have the right to choose their elected officials.

Today, there are those who seek new restrictions.  State voter ID laws are touted as a means to thwart voter fraud, when, in reality they are guises designed to limit participation by the disenfranchised.

It is imperative that you exercise your right to vote before someone decides you don’t deserve it.  To vote is to honor the legacy of all of those who fought and died for this right for all people.  Your right to vote is one of the most valuable rights you have.  Never take it for granted.
