Even before I knew what entrepreneurship was, as a young girl growing up in Brooklyn I’m pretty sure I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I had the drive for business and a genuine interest in doing my ‘own thing’, I just didn’t really know how to get started. That longing to know more and get help often pushed me to seek out a mentor, but not just any mentor. I searched for a woman, a successful black woman in business who would take me under her wing and show me the ropes. As the story goes, I never quite found that woman, but that didn’t stop me from taking a leap of faith and trying to soar on my own.

I fell quite a few times, but considering that I can now call myself a “work at home mom”, I think this bumpy flight has been well worth it. Even though I figured all this STUFF out for myself; I never wanted it to be that way. With or without a mentor, I’ve always believed in the value of having someone there to inspire you and guide you through your journey. No matter how different our visions are, the process is universal and the lessons learned by one can always teach many. That’s why I created the Black Business Women Online Social Network and why I write, teach and speak my philosophies on business to any sista with a dream. Every family, every culture, every successful business begins with giving people exchanging advice and helping the next generation turn their dreams into reality.

With my new free eBook, 'Get Your Business Straight', I wanted to go beyond my usual “this is how I did it” style of writing and show you how other women entrepreneurs of color do it every day. If you are an expert in your field, consider submitting a how-to article to both share your business with members and provide answers to the common questions newbie entrepreneurs have on this network and around the world.

  • Great Ebook, Great Idea, I think at some point we all have searched for that mentor and may have or maynot found him/her. But as we journey thru life trying, and making decisions for our lives we learn from the mistakes, the process and the progress that we make along the way. Keep learning, doing, teaching and helping it is how you make a purpose in your life.
  • Iwould like to see the questions and I could perhaps ask if some women would be interested. I would see. Meanwhile keep pushing forward if you feel this is what God has put in your heart . Sometimes you have to be the first one.
  • This is similar to what I am looking for Linda. Thanks for that. You would be surprised how many woman don't respond when asked for some words of encouragement for our upcoming girls. I'm hoping my book will inspire young woman and offer words of wisdom and support. In my own little way I hope to make a difference.

I do have some questions set up to make it easier, if you are interested or know of anyone else who is friend me so I can send my e-mail and the questions.

This message really can apply to any of the women reading this blog, including LaShanda who I think inspires a lot of women on this board and others, my only criteria is that you must write about something in your life you are passionate about. Thanks in advance.
  • Great idea for a book. Each of us needs a mentor in different areas. That is one area that the majority culture utillizes that we need to do more of and learn how to use mentorship artfully.. I love quotes and I tried to find something that would inspire you more. We need to encourage each other how to make opportunites or to utilize resources that are available and how to effectively thrive in certain workplaces and institutions.

"I had to make my own living and my own opportunity..Don't sit down and wait for the oportunities to come: you have to get up and make them". Madame C. J. Walker, 1914
Show women how to do so.
  • Good luck on your upcoming e-book Lashanda. As I shared with you in my e-mail yesterday, I am also looking to add words of wisdom from successful entrepreneurs (such as yourself) to my upcoming e-book, but having little luck getting others to share. In fact this is the final part of my book and one of the hardest to accomplish!
Maybe you will have better luck than I did (although based on your success I don't think you'll need it).
