Question for my BBW sistas

I am in the process of creating a blog. I have made my decision of my blog site. Now I have to decide on my domain name. I have been using scent4u on all of my social websites, twitter, etc. Do I change it? This name came from my time in the partylite business. PartyLite is no longer a business for me. I have finally found the business that speaks true to myself and style. One is Vault Denim and To The Nines. Jeans and shoes my ultimate passion aside from sewing and designing clothes. It all revolves around fashion. Many out there in the world wide web know me as scent4u. My two business are referred to as Strut Your Denim and Strut My To The Nines. What are your thoughts. Keep or start anew?Looking forward to your viewpoints.Blessings to one and all.

  • I agree with Rickey, because you are trying to promote different things the generic url allows you to do so without having to point people to different places.

As far as your blog I recommend Wordpress over blogger because...

    1. You can install wordpress under your own domain  i.e. "PatriciaMcClainOsborne.com/blog" and most web hosts have an easy wizard to install it so even without techincall knowledge it only takes a few clicks.
    2. Wordpress also has more plug-ins and widgets than Blogger does which you may not need initially but it is far more scalable long term.
    3. Many small business owners actually use Wordpress to build their entire site, wordpress has shopping cart functionality, forms, and many other services are starting to integrate with wordpress making it one of the top 5 content management systems.
    4. Google just announced that it is going to rebrand Blogger under the google name. At this point we don't really know what that means. Could be just a name change, or functionality change. Either way you are better off not being at the mercy of another companies marketing initiatives when building and branding your business.
  • Thank you Rickey. I am known by name. Your viewpoint is well founded. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my post. I can be an overthinker/processor. Now you have helped me with that decision on to the next. Which blog site will I use. Blog.com or Wordpress. What's your viewpoint on that?:)

    Blessings to you and yours

    Until we meet again.

  • Great branding question. I have alway recommended "promote you first everything else second" . Companies will come and go for a variety of reasons. You will change companies, suppliers, vendors, etc for a variety of reasons.

So if you "tie" your domain name to a product, theme, etc, you limit your "coverage", however, if it is "tied" to your ID (brand) you can add and substract as needed.

Lets say you establish Patricia McClain Osborne.com as your primary url ( domain name). Now you place all information on the site ( blog). You can present whatever you need to.

You can direct your viewer to specific information areas (pages) on your site. Here is what most important,

You are building your brandname not a product category. You will be "found" by search engines building your internet identity. You will establish consistency and your viewer/reader will know how to find you easier.

Ok, to keep this short, I recommend create a url (domain name) that builds you. You can create information about whatever you want and let the world know it can be found at PatriciaMcClainOsborne.com ( this is just an example, not saying, this is what you will use).
