Coppin State University is a model urban, residential liberal arts university located in the northwest section of the City of Baltimore that provides academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education. An HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Coppin has a culturally rich history as an institution providing quality educational programs and community outreach services. Coppin offers 53 majors and nine graduate-degree programs. A fully accredited institution, Coppin serves Baltimore residents as well as students from around the world, with flexible course schedules that include convenient day, evening, and weekend classes and distance learning courses.
Coppin State University was founded in 1900 at what was then called Colored High School (later named Douglass High School) on Pennsylvania Avenue by the Baltimore City School Board who initiated a one-year training course for the preparation of African-American elementary school teachers. By 1902, the training program was expanded to a two-year Normal Department within the high school, and seven years later it was separated from the high school and given its own principal.
The student population is comprised of nearly 4,000 students who are enrolled in day, evening and weekend undergraduate/graduate courses. Many are Baltimore residents from very diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. Coppin State University has graduated thousands of alumni who are making a tremendous impact in the State of Maryland in various fields, particularly Human Services.

Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program
The Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program encourages students to offer innovative ideas as to "How education at the high school level can help avert and/or minimize a future foreclosure crisis" in the form of an essay. Essay submissions must be between 800 and 2,000 words. You must be a current undergraduate student to be eligible for this award; graduate students, law students, and, incoming freshman are not eligible. First place prize is $5,000 and second through fifth place will be awarded $1,000 each. Checks will be made out to the college or university attended in the form of a non-renewable scholarship grant. The best five plans will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education.

"Frame My Future" Scholarship Contest
The "Frame My Future" Scholarship Contest is open to full - time undergraduate and graduate students attending a U.S. college or university for the 2011 - 2012 academic year. To enter, you must submit an original creation with one image, in a digital JPEG image format, that expresses what you hope to achieve in your personal and professional life after college. Cheyney University Of Pennsylvania

Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America. The founding of Cheyney University was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker *philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendents of the African race.
Born on a plantation in the West Indies, Richard Humphreys came to Philadelphia in 1764. Having witnessed the struggles of African Americans competing unsuccessfully for jobs due to the influx of immigrants, he became interested in their plight. In 1829, race riots heightened and it was that year Richard Humphreys wrote his will and charged thirteen fellow Quakers to design an institution: "...to instruct the descendents of the African Race in school learning, in the various branches of the mechanic Arts, trades and Agriculture, in order to prepare and fit and qualify them to act as teachers...."
The school began in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth and successfully provided free classical education for qualified young people. In 1902, the Institute moved to George Cheyney's farm, 25 miles west of Philadelphia. In 1913, the name was changed to Cheyney State Teachers College; in 1921, the State Normal School at Cheyney; and in 1959, Cheyney State College. In 1983, Cheyney joined the State System of Higher Education as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities who receive education instruction beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also enter careers such as journalism, medicine, business, science, law, communication, and government service. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 disciplines and the master’s degree in education.

American Health and Beauty Aids Institute
AHBAI Offering $5,000 in Cosmetology Scholarships
Beauty school students can earn a cosmetology scholarship from the AHBAI Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation. Scholarships will be awarded in $250 amounts for a total of $5,000 awarded.
To be eligible for a scholarship, students must have an 85 percent or higher average in school and must have completed a minimum of 300 hours. Extracurricular activities, attendance records and previous competitions/awards will also be taken into consideration.
In 1991 AHBAI established the Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation in honor of the late Fred Luster, Sr. who was a founding board member of AHBAI and founder of the Chicago-based Luster Products, Inc. To date, the foundation has awarded nearly $670,000 in scholarships.

Central State University
Wilberforce, Ohio
Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation's oldest historically black universities, with a 120-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements. The College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business and Industry, which includes the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering and Water Resources Management, form the core of the University’s varied academic offerings.
The CSU Institute for Urban Education (IUE) builds on Central State’s roots as a center of excellence for teacher education. It also reflects the College of Education’s emphasis on preparing teachers for work in today’s urban classrooms. Housed in the newly constructed Center for Education and Natural Sciences, the IUE serves as a national resource center for the training of urban teachers and the exchange of scholarship on urban education issues. A newly developed program in environmental engineering builds on CSU’s signature Water Resources Management Program, and a new major in criminal justice will further expand career opportunities for Central State University students.
A centrally located branch campus in Dayton, Ohio, CSU-Dayton, offers a range of courses and class schedules that serve the needs of nontraditional learners wishing to complete their undergraduate degrees, pursue master’s degrees in education, or take advantage of professional development opportunities.
Central State is home to the nationally renowned Central State University Chorus, which has twice been nominated for a Grammy. The Lady Marauders basketball team is perennially in the national rankings and has traveled to 12 straight NAIA national tournaments. The track and field team as well as the cheerleading and dance troupes have also won championships and awards, and the Central State marching band, the Invincible Marching Marauders, have twice performed at the national Honda Battle of the Bands and been featured in the 2006 film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. With the return of football to Central State in 2005, the Mighty Marauders are reviving a legacy that produced several national championships. Central State’s impending move to NCAA Division II will widen the University’s competitive field and provide more exposure for Central State University’s student athletes.
CSU is Ohio’s only predominately African American public institution of higher education, but it is, and has always been, “open to all persons of good moral character,” as ordained by the 1887 legislation that created Central State's predecessor. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.

Barbara Lotze Scholarships for Future Teachers
Program Summary: The AAPT Executive Board offers two scholarships for future high school Physics Teachers. These scholarships, supported by an endowment funded by Barbara Lotze, are available only to U.S. citizens attending U.S. schools. Undergraduate students enrolled, or planning to enroll, in physics teacher preparation curricula and high school seniors entering such programs are eligible. The two successful applicants will each receive a stipend of up to $2,000. The scholarship may be granted to an individual for each of four years. Applications will be accepted at any time and will be considered for recommendation to the Executive Board at each AAPT Winter Meeting. All applications in which all materials, including letters of recommendation, are received by December 1 will be considered for recommendation at the January meeting of the AAPT Executive Board.

How Do I Get An Internship?
1. Get the best grades possible in school.
Employers are more inclined to hire college students that are doing well in school. In addition, employers look at the type of classes you have been taking. Students with a rigorous academic program are preferred.
2. Participate in school-sponsored activities like clubs and sports.
Employers believe that this demonstrates an ability to get along with others and that’s what they want.
3. Participate in community activities.
Employers see this as a sign of your ability to serve others. This experience provides them with insight about how you will serve customers.
4. Be aggressive. Ask around, surf the web and go out and look for an internship
An internship will not fall in your lap. Most employers don’t feel the need to advertise to students. Employers are expecting that you will seek them out.
Ask everybody you know—teachers, counselors, your parents, friends, (including the people that your parents and friends know) about places that are hiring students. Call or go to the location and apply.
Look for “now hiring” signs at places where you’d like to work and ask to speak with the hiring manager for the establishment. Ask if they will hire teens and if so, offer to complete an application.
Employers are impressed when students take the initiative to ask for an internship. It shows employers that you are self-motivated and really want an internship.
5. Learn how to complete an application
Employers want to know about you but they are also looking for neatness and accuracy in the completion of the application. Misspelled words and sloppy handwriting are a turn-off.
6. Be prepared to be interviewed on the spot.
Employers may not tell you this but they are sizing you up the first time they see you so it’s best to be prepared. Dress appropriately for business. While nose and tongue rings might be cool among your friends, most employers still frown upon their use in the workplace.
7. Practice talking about yourself beforehand.
It helps to be prepared for the interview. The more comfortable you are the better. Employers are impressed by teens who make eye contact, shake hands firmly and are confident about themselves. If you’re an above average student, say so. If you have other talents, skills and abilities that would be helpful on the job, make sure the interviewer knows it. Be positive and take your time answering questions. Answer in full sentences and talk about what you bring to the job.
8. Learn something about the company where you want to work.
Employers are charmed when teens know something about the company and share it. It shows you are really taking an interest in them.
9. Follow up.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for the opportunity. Ask when you will be notified if you have the job. Write a thank you note to the interviewer. Follow up with the interviewer if you don't hear back within a week. Employers need to know you are serious.
10. If you land the internship, be a good employee. Earn a positive reference.
Employers expect that you will a) be on time, b) be positive, c) work well with others and d) do the best job you can. This is important! Getting good references will be a viable part of your ongoing career. New employers will always ask past employers about how well you have performed on the job.
Be Determined
If at first you don't succeed, brush it off. Remain positive and move on to the next possibility. The more you search and the more applications you submit, the more likely you will land a job.
Consider Alternatives.

Alfred Chisholm / BASF Memorial Scholarship Fund
Alfred Chisholm / BASF Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 to honor the life of a former BASF employee, Alfred L. Chisholm, who served as a leader in his community, and who was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars to assist students pursuing a college degree.
In memory of Mr. Chisholm and with the support of BASF Corporation's African American Employee Group (AAEG), one student will receive $1500 one time, non-renewable scholarship, to assist in furthering their college education for the 2009-10 academic year.
The scholarship is available to undergraduate students who enrolled at Historically Black Colleges or Universities and who must have relatives employed by BASF Corporation. Applicants meeting all the criteria will be forwarded to the BASF Corporation African American Employee Group, Al Chisholm Scholarship Committee for final selection.

Central State University

Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation's oldest historically black universities, with a 120-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements. The College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business and Industry, which includes the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering and Water Resources Management, form the core of the University’s varied academic offerings.
The CSU Institute for Urban Education (IUE) builds on Central State’s roots as a center of excellence for teacher education. It also reflects the College of Education’s emphasis on preparing teachers for work in today’s urban classrooms. Housed in the newly constructed Center for Education and Natural Sciences, the IUE serves as a national resource center for the training of urban teachers and the exchange of scholarship on urban education issues. A newly developed program in environmental engineering builds on CSU’s signature Water Resources Management Program, and a new major in criminal justice will further expand career opportunities for Central State University students.
A centrally located branch campus in Dayton, Ohio, CSU-Dayton, offers a range of courses and class schedules that serve the needs of nontraditional learners wishing to complete their undergraduate degrees, pursue master’s degrees in education, or take advantage of professional development opportunities.
Central State is home to the nationally renowned Central State University Chorus, which has twice been nominated for a Grammy. The Lady Marauders basketball team is perennially in the national rankings and has traveled to 12 straight NAIA national tournaments. The track and field team as well as the cheerleading and dance troupes have also won championships and awards, and the Central State marching band, the Invincible Marching Marauders, have twice performed at the national Honda Battle of the Bands and been featured in the 2006 film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. With the return of football to Central State in 2005, the Mighty Marauders are reviving a legacy that produced several national championships. Central State’s impending move to NCAA Division II will widen the University’s competitive field and provide more exposure for Central State University’s student athletes.
CSU is Ohio’s only predominately African American public institution of higher education, but it is, and has always been, “open to all persons of good moral character,” as ordained by the 1887 legislation that created Central State's predecessor. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.

Essential Steps to Selecting a College
Chances are, picking a college may be the most important decision you've made so far. With more than 3,000 institutions of higher learning in the United States alone, it can seem overwhelming.
But here's the good news: There are scores of outstanding colleges and universities nationwide, plus lots of information available on how to select one that's right for you. You can start your selection process with a few simple steps:
Identify your must-haves.
Ask yourself some serious questions:
Do I want to attend a large university or a small
college?
Do I want my school to be in a rural, suburban, or urban setting?
Do I want to live close to home? What can I afford?
Will my family help pay for my education?
Do I want to live on campus or commute? What do I want to major in?
Answering these questions will go a long way toward helping you create a list of schools that meet your *criteria.
Develop a list of contenders. Make an appointment with your college counselor and describe the things you want from a school. Based on what your counselor knows about you, he or she might have some great suggestions. Get ideas from family and friends. And, avail yourself of our free Web-based college matching service, My College Options. Spend a few minutes completing your personal profile and My College Options will provide you a list of colleges in order of compatibility. (Hint: You can redo your profile and search criteria as often as you change your mind! No charge.)
Request information. If you haven't already requested brochures and applications through My College Options, call or email your top schools and ask for admissions packets. Spend some time looking at your schools' glossy view books and Flash-enabled websites; you'll find that each school has its own personality. (As you read, remember each college is trying to put its best foot forward.) And supplement the material you receive from colleges with information from college guides, conversations with current students, friends, family, and counselors.
Narrow your list and apply. Spend time talking with your parents about which schools they would like you to consider. Also, have the money talk; ask your parents how much they will contribute financially toward your higher education. If you and your parents disagree about school choices, listen to their points, explain your side, and try and develop a "consensus list". There's no rule about how many schools you should apply to. Some people apply to as many as a dozen; others send in one application only. (Keep in mind that most colleges request application fees, usually around $50. So applying can get expensive.)
It may also be helpful to divide your top choices into "reach" schools—those that might be a stretch financially or academically; mid-range schools where you're likely to get in but aren't sure; and safety schools—the sure bets. A good rule of thumb: Apply to three reach schools, three mid-range school, and two safety schools.

Purpose of Award: To assist students who attend UNCF member colleges and universities and have overcome extreme circumstances and hardships.
Eligibility: Applicants must be African American students, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have unmet financial need that is verified by the college or university financial aid office. Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."
If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

To accomplish its mission, Bluefield State College offers undergraduate liberal arts and professional programs in applied sciences, business, education, humanities, social sciences, engineering technologies, and allied health sciences leading to baccalaureate and ass
ociate degrees, the nontraditional Regents Bachelor of Arts degree, and continuing education opportunities.
Bluefield State College was established as a black teachers college by an act of the West Virginia Legislature in 1895 and was integrated after 1954. By the 1960's the College had a comprehensive four-year program of teacher education, arts and sciences, and engineering technology. Gradually a variety of two-year technical programs evolved in response to local needs.
Bluefield State College has emerged as a four-year state supported commuter college serving south-eastern West Virginia with a primary thrust in the direction of career and technical two and four year programs. The liberal arts offerings of the College are focused to enhance its unique mission.
The College offers Baccalaureate and Associate degrees. Instructional programs are offered in engineering technologies, business, teacher education, arts and sciences, nursing and health science professions, and a variety of career fields. Students may also complete the non-traditional Regents Bachelor of Arts degree through Bluefield State College. The College works closely with area two-year colleges in developing two-plus-two degree opportunities for selected baccalaureate level programs whereby the two years completed for an associate degree are applicable toward the baccalaureate degree. Bluefield State College offers a wide variety of courses off campus and through distance.
