As entrepreneurs we all know that balancing your day job with your new startup is never easy. Sitting and waiting for the day that one can fire their employer to pursue their business fulltime is an entrepreneur’s dream. There are days I come home from work just exhausted and tired, but I push myself to go work on a new jewelry design or create that new marketing campaign for an upcoming jewelry line.I was talking to one of my childhood friends the other day, who happens to be a new author, and we discussed trying “find time” to complete tasks for our businesses after coming from a long day at work. I told her my motivation is that I am so focused that I try to find the time everyday to do something for The Pink Locket, even if it means going to sleep past midnight. Everyday when I get up and go to my 9 to 5, it’s a reminder that I need to stay focused because I made the decision that this venture is going to work for me, not that I “hope” it works, but it’s “going” to work. We’ve all heard the saying “Birds of a feather flock together.” I believe that this is especially true when starting up your business that by keeping other successful and determined entrepreneurs in your circle will help you to achieve the objectives and goals of your very own business. I was once told people need to have 3 sets of friends, your regular circle of friends, your work friends and friends who are more successful than you. With that being said I’m definitely working on the later.

  • Great post Kamilah. I certainly understand what you're going through. When I started by business as a professional beauty consultant I was still working my full-time job. At times I was so tired, it was tempting to cancel that appointment or not make those calls. But, as with you, that job served as motivation to work my business because I knew God had more out there for me to do. Plus, there's no better feeling than seeing a woman's mood and expression transformed after spending 45 mins with me. Just energizes me.
Now I have the blessing of working my business full-time from home. It is Hard but there's nothing like it. Keep strong and God will bless your efforts.

  • OMG! I thought people quit their jobs to start new adventures in starting a new business, but I just can't afford that in this day and time. I have been so exhausted coming in from work and taking care of my son, all I want to do at the end of the night is eat and go to bed, but I have been pushing through as well. It is hard and tiresome, but I want it so bad. couchtalk.web.com (Life Coaching)
  • Great article, this is exactly what I needed. It's very hard to stay focused on your dreams; especially after working a 9-5. But again, I wake up and go to work and when reality sets in again.
  • I do just that each night. I stay have stayed up until 1:00am on many nights trying to make this dream come true. My motivation is my four girls and the fact I was created to own my own, not to make someone else rich. But I have to admit sometime it is very hard. I have a business called Brown Sugar Fashion I sell lady accessories. Even when thinks are slow we must press on. Brownsugarfashion.com
  • ~~Ditto-great post~~ it's like you are reading my mind. I get frustrated and long for the day I am seeing my passion/dreams come to past, and yes going to my (bill-paying job) sometimes frustrates me, but also motivates me, sometimes things just trigger me and I am ready to throw in the towel, instead I've grown accustom to Stop, Drop, and Pray..sit and be thankful for where I am now, and where I am headed, then as I'm headed home, I'm motivated to pursue my goals, and all the mini efforts that will later lead to my success. Thank you all for this wonderful place to grow, learn and support other women! Its way overdue ladies. Thanks again.
  • This is a great post, which is why I have decided to feature it on 'The Business', a digital magazine featuring the best Small Business discussions and material on the BBWO Network. This is a new feature, so it is still being customized and I would love your feedback. Feel free to add comments on 'The Business' page. I've been wanting to set this up for a while now, especially after reading the responses I got from my post 'Putting the Business Back in BBWO.' As our community gets bigger, it is becoming a SPAM magnet, and I want to ensure that does not happen. We are experts in our own right with tons of info and experiences to share, which is what I want BBWO to continue to be about. If you feel as I do, great! Continue writing these wonderful posts and I will do all that I can to promote you and your business.

Quick tip: If you haven't already done so, feel free to include your web banner or business details at the bottom of this post. I hope that with the new Magazine page, more traffic will be directed to your way!

    Take Care,
    LaShanda
