My Fashion Week

Last week, two key things happened: Football season started and Fashion Week kicked off. I'm in heaven and a bit of hell. As the daughter, mother, sister, niece, granddaughter of fashionistas (and some sharp brothas)--fashion fuels me. Not just shopping and imprinting my own style, but the colors, fabrics, energy and creative energy involved. It's a way of life. It is life. And right now, life is good.And then we have sports. My other passion (I have many, and that's...okay). Favre came to NY. Phelps reigns supreme (I was a swimmer and lifeguard). Brady got injured (sniff) and Michigan will always be numero uno to all (!) So, that part of my spirit is in a good place too.But what to do when both worlds call, and I need to answer professionally and personally to both? So just when this could have been the best week EVER, I was too busy to truly grasp what it meant to me and for me. And in many ways for my being Black in America. I've had opportunity to do some cool things in my days; And for all my fussin' and cussin' and stressing over getting things just right and getting my due--I worked on two significant releases this week: the site redesign of the NFL/United Way Agency's partnership microsite, and the launch of a fashion and shopping online digest InsideTheTents.net. Next week, after all the pieces have been tested and all the modules function like a well coached team, one of the coolest sites on the web will hit the virtual field. When folks log on and see the moving timeline, players profiles that jump of the page, trading cards that flip and all the other bells and whistles, I'll be quietly on the sidelines saying: "Not bad for a little girl of color who wanted to be in the Olympics and be a sports agent, but the timing wasn't right". Uhn...And then when Italian Vogue published an all Black model edition of their magazine this year, and the catwalk at Bryant Park is bright, but light on the usage of sistas and brothas, I pulled a coup that those in their Ivory-fashion-mag-Towers would never suspect: I go inside the tents and have captured the moments and brought access before others did and will. And it won't stop there--London, Milan and Paris are next and there's Tokyo too. For all their money and seeming power, I relied on good ole fashion Black girl-get it done ingenuity (and years of business know how and relationships), and did my thing. From behind the scenes: I walked the walk. Uhn...So my head is still pounding (no real sleep in weeks), and my fingers numb. My still heart torn between two loves (alas, there is TV, film and music too and those projects to deliver), I still have tweaks so that the work is perfect, but in the end, I realize I did good this week and made a mark on America in my own small, but significant way. What was all the fuss?Carry on and pass the remote...

My older sister used to send me annual subscriptions to Ebony Jr. A few months ago, I purchased a used set in good condition on sale at the public library for only $6.00. It came complete with a matching Childcraft series. Something that has positively impacted and lasted me for a lifetime was purchased for less than a movie ticket.My mom used to take me to the library regularly. I recall picking out books and tapes and returning them back on time. It gave me great pleasure to fill out the application for library cards when my youngest reached the required two years old age limit.I used to sit and try to decipher my older siblings college textbooks lying around the house. I recall trying so very hard to figure out my brother's calculus book problems. It was a mystery that I was determined to grow up and explore. It was a private joy to receive an 'A' on my college course when I finally reached that level of understanding.My daughters and I have our favorite books we read. Daddy has identified his favorite ones of his own with the girls. Books were introduced to me at birth. I loved each and every one of them and now almost 4 decades later some of my favorite ones are still around in the hands of my munchkins.My husband reminds me that some parents do not get introduced to the importance and joy of reading until adulthood. He falls in that camp. He instills the importance to the girls because he now sees how important the skills are in life.Reading fine print on contracts, scouring over newspaper classifieds or even following an engaging blog discussion online can be a challenge for some parents.Some habits are hard to manage. Experts all cite the importance of a child being read to at the earliest of ages. It doesn't even matter what you read. Just let them know that words on paper have meaning.What are our favorite ways to instill the love of reading? Exceptance

We as people need to feel as if we belong, to a family an organization,a community,etc. And with belonging comes exceptance. Therefore we must realize that even though we have our differences we are all part of one family, The Human Race. It would be a beauitful thing to teach this to our children and future generations.

I registered in the Avon Breast Cancer walkathon to support my aunt whose 36 years old and have been battling with breast cancer for 3 years... She a mother of 4 year old triplets... She was told on friday that she might not make it but i don't believe it.. with alot of prayer and support i hope everything can turn out for the best... She is like a mother to me she help take care of me..She was there for the birth of my kids i have 3 by the way... I just want to support her and all the breast cancer patients and survivors.. Kpangnan Butter

Kpangnan butter, pronounced “pain-ya”, is also called golden shea butter or African nut butter. It is obtained from the African nut tree, which is found in the forests of West Africa. It is a golden yellow color, which is the reason why some call it “golden shea butter”. It is not, however, related to shea butter. Kpangnan butter is a soft, powdery type nut butter that melts into the skin and gives it a dry, silky feeling.According to cyberlipid.org, this butter contains a high proportion of stigmasterol, a plant sterol. In skin application, this sterol may have anti-inflammatory effects and may assist in healing skin irritations such as eczema and severely dry skin.Kpangnan is a lovely, powdery butter that plays well with other oils and makes a wonderfully soothing balm for the skin. In the spirit of Black entrepreneurs supporting each other, I am posting this video on Nation Building. Buying Black and creating Black businesses are the building blocks towards nation building- which- I don't know about ya'll, but that is my ultimate goal as an entrepreneur. The video is a snippet of a lecture by Dr John Henrick Clarke- Well known ancestor who was steeped in his knowledge of African History as a Prof. at Hunter College in NYC- was involved in various world movements for Black people- including the Civil Rights Movement in the US, fight for independence in Ghana, West Africa, and Apartheid in South Africa, etc.Enjoy.
