You're Here! - Now What?

I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing this grow by over a thousand members in the space of only a few months. In looking throughmy blog posts I noticed that I posted an article about ‘creating relationshipsonline’ and how important it is do so, especially if yours is a strictly onlinebusiness.

Because the group has grown so much in such a short time, I wanted to reiterate some of the points that I wrote about in the blog post.Perhaps this is the first online group that you have joined or you’re an oldonline veteran (like me, lol). Either way, we can all still gain something fromeach other, but only if you’re willing to get in and participate.

Many people join online groups, create a page in this group and expect the dollars to roll in, because of course, your product or service isso irresistible that all you have to do is “be” and folks will come to you. I’mreally sorry to burst your bubble, but, sor-ry – it just ain’t so. You have towork much harder at creating relationships online because you do not have theforce of your physical presence (in person/on phone) to back up your salespitch.

I would like to provide you with a few pointers to find and foster relationships (read network) online.

  • Form a relationship based on what you can give, rather than what you can get.
A lot of people have the attitude "I'm not going to do anything for anyone ifthere's nothing in it for me." We all remember our high schoolliterature, right? "No man is an island". Although you may not beworking side by side with other entrepreneurs/business women, we are allconnected in one way or another. Now I'm not saying talk up someoneelse's product over your own, but there's no harm in giving out the name of asistapreneur who you know can help someone. For example, someone postedon this board about needing a lawyer. I replied that one of the sisterson the board was a representative for Pre-Paid Legal Services - hopefullythese two sisters were able to connect and both benefit from my"introduction".

  • Don't wait for people to come to you
Cruise around BBWO and get the lay of the land. Run a search for yourkeywords or check out a few profiles at random. Leave a comment (yourcalling card) on profiles that interest you. For example, as a naturalbath and body maker, I looked for other bath and body makers. Then Ilooked for holistic/natural practitioners, then I looked for natural haircare. As I ran this search, I found a few sisters who shared my samevision or with whom I could connect with on another level. Reach out, leave a comment!

  • Personalize your approach
Please, please, do not leave a generic comment on 20 profiles. "I've gota great automated business that will generate multiple streams of incomethrough affiliate marketing." You've heard it, I've heard it, we've allheard it. Take the time to come up with something original, likeactually reading the person's profile and asking a question about what theydo.

  • Read the boards.
LaShanda has said this all ready but I'll say it again. Read! Iwas fortunate enough to be interviewed by a lovely lady from Canada AND Ilearned about a trend called New Urbanism. How? If I can't doanything else, I read the front page of BBWO from top to bottom at least threetimes a week. Even if I don't post, I check the newsfeed. Sistersare asking for advice, for information, for guest bloggers, samples for goodybags, article content - there's plenty going on.

  • Be professional
Maybe I'm a prude, but nothing turns me off more than foul language on abusiness board. If I'm on a personal board, hey, I know that anythingpretty much goes. But when I'm reading your blog post request for guestbloggers which used profanity, I'm not sure I want to be associated with yoursite. Save the profanity for your friends, please! You never knowhow people will react to your choice of language.

For more pointers on finding your way around BBWO, see LaShanda's post andmy original post on this topic.

Greetings Family,(Contact Information At The Bottom Of The Page)It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again...smileAs a Digital Drummer, I pass messages of interest and concern from one website to another....like the drummers of old Africa. I picked up on the story below from the BDPA (www.bdpa.org) social networking group on CollectiveX (see http://bdpa.collectivex.com/)I like to write articles/posts on the opportunities created by, and barriers broken by the advent of technology (see http://www.blackwebportal.com/wire/AuthorContent.cfm?PartnerID=57). Social Networking is a new online phenomenon that is doing exactly that. Most everybody has a social network profile somewhere in cyberspace (Facebook, MySpace, BlackPlanet). As I've written the past, some think social networking is...for kids, dating, or just a plain old time trap. But the truth is people are making real money.Entrepreneurs and software developers are creating thousands of applications and widgets every day. If you read my Blog on "Opportunities Available For Black Developers" you read about a 17 year old girl that took $10 and turned it into $70,000 a month by creating free web page profiles on MySpace. As I've often said, the time of excuses is past (victim theology). We have no one but ourselves to blame, for the current state of Black content online. The Internet is full of free software and content development tools. All we have to do is use them, and promote the end product amongst ourselves.Blacks are the originators of American pop culture. Now is the time for us to stop accepting the crumbs off the table and begin to enjoy the full fruits of our labor from this cornucopia of opportunity we call the Internet.Along those lines, I strongly recommend that if you're into social networking, you begin to look at developing applications and widgets that reflect your culture, interests, and creativity. FaceBook (like other Dot.com entities) is offering you a helping hand. The FaceBook Developers Fund is a great way to generate start-up money to fund your dreams.Remember, We Must Share The Knowledge (Network)... Online Advertising Tips

This is an older article I found on Etsy, but it is still very relevant and informative. Enjoy!~Kamilah C.The Pink Lockethttp://thepinklocket.com_________________________________________________________________________A DIY-Friendly Guide to Advertising Online (Part One)Story by exboyfriendPublished on October 10, 2007 in How-To Photo by DragonflyCraftsMeredith Keller is an artist for Ex-Boyfriend and the founder of IShopIndie.com, an advertising co-op for indepedent designers. She has extensive experience running internet advertising and promotional campaigns on the internet for Ex-Boyfriend and IShopIndie.com. She has served as a consultant to other internet businesses on how to promote online. She has recently launched a service that is dedicated to co-op based promotion for independent online retailers.CPM, ROI... WTF?!Muddling your way through the online advertising world can be tricky business. It's got a lingo all its own and requires finesse to make the most of your advertising dollars. In the following article, we're going to discuss the most common ways internet advertising is sold and the benefits and drawbacks of those models.CPM advertising — CPM stands for cost per mile. In English, it means the amount you will pay for every 1,000 impressions. (An impression means your ad has been viewed.) So, if a website says their advertising is $10/CPM, and you spend $500, your ad will receive 50,000 impressions. Is this a great deal? Well, maybe, but it depends on what you are comparing it to.The average banner ad campaign typically results in a click-through rate of less than 1%, so you are probably going to get 500 or fewer people visiting your site in the above example. You may see an above-average click-through rate depending on several factors, though. Consider the placement of the ad; is it going to be highly visible to site visitors? Is the ad a terrific match for the site you are going to advertise on? Maybe you sell yarn; a good match would be to advertise on a website for knitters. If you've got an especially eye-catching, fantastic ad, it might perform exceptionally well on that site and you might see an above-average click-through rate and above-average conversions (“conversions” is a fancy way of saying sales).CPC advertising — Cost per click advertising means you only pay when your ad is clicked on. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? Maybe, maybe not. Google Adwords is one of the biggest providers of CPC advertising, and they have a huge audience to offer you.One issue with CPC advertising is poor click quality can burn up your budget with no sales to show for it. If you've selected popular keywords, you might be paying $1-$2 per click and getting lots of people on your site, but they're just coming to browse with no intention of making a purchase. This can easily burn up a small budget with nothing to show for it. If you have a large budget, the losses you will be taking from this type of visitor behavior might be acceptable, but if you're strapped for cash, this might not be the best deal for you.The other major issue with CPC advertising is click fraud. Generally, the way CPC works is that content providers (bloggers, website owners, etc.) have a relationship with CPC providers like Google. The arrangement is that the content provider, such as a blogger, will run ads for a company like Google and the content provider gets paid when people click from their site to yours. Unscrupulous "content providers" have come up with elaborate ways to foil Google's system so that they get paid and you get nothing. You'll know this is happening when you check out your site's web statistics and you see in your list of referrer sites like freecheapvacationsnow191.ws. If you go check out the site, you'll see it actually has nothing on it but adword campaigns and pop up ads. This site didn't deliver you a potential customer at all; it's a site owner who is manipulating Google's ad serving software for profit at your expense. You could spend all day blocking these fraudulent sites, but that will be an ongoing job for you. You could also block Google's content network, but this means you are keeping your ad out of sight from a potentially large audience. There's no right or wrong approach to dealing with this problem. It's something you will have to determine how to address on based on your own unique marketing campaign, budget and products.CPC advertising is probably most compatible with products people actively seek out, rather than products people purchase on impulse. A CPC campaign would be great if, for example, you were an internet retailer selling used replacement car parts. Generally people who need a alternator don't just see an ad for "alternators" and think "I'd love to have one of those." Typically, customers for a company like that will seek out that company's products when the need arises. So for a company like that, having their link pop up when people search "used alternator" on Google would be ideal. If you sell something that's more of a luxury or novelty item, you might be better off with another form of advertising.Flat Rate Advertising — Many content providers have a flat rate that they charge to advertise with them for a set amount of time. For example, a blog might charge you $100/week or $300/month. The nice thing about this model is that content providers who sell their advertising this way often make discounted pricing available to advertisers who commit to several months of advertising at once.Evaluating flat rate advertising can be tricky, because this form of advertising can be a stellar deal or a huge waste of money. To evaluate this kind of opportunity, you will want to know about the site's average number of page views and unique visitors. Keep in mind that the average click-through rate is less than 1%, so if a site wants $500/month and they get 1200 unique visitors per day, on average you are probably only going to see about 360 visits from this ad. You might wind up with a better click-through rate if the site is particularly well-suited for marketing your products or if the site includes a newsletter mention or an advertorial (an editorial write-up advertising your product or service, paid for by you) with the deal. The next thing you want to consider is click quality. Click quality refers to how great these clicks are going to be for you. Are these click-throughs likely to result in conversions for you? If you are selling expensive items and you advertise on a site whose readers have an average household income of $30,000/year, you might see lots of click-throughs but no sales because the audience just can't afford your products. To evaluate click quality, you will want to ask the advertising venue for a media kit. This media kit should tell you some statistical information about their audience. This information may include gender, race, geographic location, and/or average household income. All of this data can indicate the kind of click quality you can expect. Many venues that offer flat rate advertising allow you to buy a short-term ad at a somewhat inflated price. Meaning they may charge $300/month, but they will let you try an ad for $100 for one week. If you are unsure about the ad venue you're considering, this is a great way to test the waters.Further Resources:BlogAds — A marketplace for blog advertising. Offers self-service ad purchases, flexible terms and sites that are appropriate for a variety of budgets.Google Adwords — The leading provider of cost-per-click advertising.Federated Media — CPM based advertising available for a variety of blogs.I Shop Indie — The author's co-operative internet advertising for indie designers.Merkell.net — The author's service dedicated to co-op based promotion for independent online retailers.

Be Prepared

Whose motto was Be Prepared? Who knew that this motto would be effective for the rest of my life. As a young girl, I was a part of the Girls Scout and that was our motto. These two simple yet powerful words have made an impact in all areas of my life. Being prepared is something that is necessary to handle sudden changes, challenges and everyday issues. We are now offering training workshops to various businesses. Our initial target audience was to the health care facilities. The workshops are targeted to improve relations with the internal and external clients as this makes a marked difference in the success of one’s business. In sharing the growth and development at a networking event, I was asked to present the workshop for a corporate company. I accepted the opportunity as it occurred to me that the training would be beneficial for anyone in business. It was well received and now we are receiving more requests that are outside of the market we thought would best benefit from our service. Now we are traveling to cities/towns across the country. This is to encourage you to not only network but be ready to adjust to the requests that may assist you in the growth of your business. Remember you should always Be Prepared!

TWEEZING BROWS POINT A, B & C

Well-groomed eyebrows are a must. But before you reach for the tweezers determine where to start. By locating three key pivotal points of reference, you will know where and what to tweeze. Simply follow these steps and you will have perfect brows.POINT A. Hold a pencil or the handle of a brush vertically against the side of your nose, noticing where it meets the brow. That is where brow should begins.

POINT B. Hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye. Notice where the pencil meets the brow: This is the best place for the peak of your arch. If you tweeze from Point A to B, tapering the line slightly thinner toward the peak, you will create the ideal shape for your brow.POINT C. Again, place the pencil against your nostril, but this time, extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. Where it meets the brow is the best place for your brow to end. If you tweeze from Point B to Point C, tapering the line even thinner, you will create the best brow shape for your faces.Interested in learning more subscibe to www.corinnebridalmakeovers.blogspot.com Corinne's Fashion World site by entering your email address.Corinne

Indies On Capitol Hill

Sweatin' For You In Congress and at the FDA!

I'm excited to be back from our trip to Washington, DC to advocate against the FDA Globalization Act of 2008. I will be reporting all the details to Indie Beauty Network members in a members only conference call tomorrow. (Check your email members!) In the meantime, I just have to share some photos and a little bit about our journey. It all started at 1:00AM Tuesday (yesterday) when my dear youngest brother picked me up from the airport. I arrived at our family home at about 2:00AM and fell asleep almost immediately. When the alarm went off at 5:30AM, it was on. We squeezed in 4 meetings all over town in one day. Here's how we did it.

First Call

I met up with Kayla Fioravanti (see pronunciation lesson below) of Essential Wholesale, Jamila White of j.blossom, Anne-Marie Faiola of Brambleberry and Lela Barker of Bella Lucce at 8:15 at the Food & Drug Administration's Office of Cosmetics & Colors. We huddled in the lobby (there were no chairs) for about an hour rehearsing our presentation. The energy level was high. We were looking our best, even showing off our fabulous shoes. These are Lela's. Note the high heels.

High_heels

e.Our meeting started at 9:00AM. We were done by 10:20. After our meeting with FDA, we ran (literally) to catch the metro so we would be on time for an 11:00 meeting with a staffer in Senator John Kerry's office. It wasn't long before we ditched our heels in favor of flats and flip flops, as demonstrated by Jamila White who sported a summer pedicure. We could really run fast without the heels.

Flip_flops

When we got to the Senate Office Building, we promptly got lost. When we discovered where we were, we learned that we had entered the building through the door that was the furthest away from Senator Kerry's very grand corner suite of offices. So we ran some more.

By this time, we gave the Indie Beauty Network a new name. The Sweaty Beauty Network.

Lucky for us, the staffer was delayed. So we stood in Senator Kerry's outer office with our chins on the floor. That's right, our mouths were wide open in awe at the hundreds of photographs recounting Kerry's years of public service. Yes, the original swift boat photos are there. And the ones with the Dalai Lama and tons with kids. We posed for one of our own.

Senator_kerrys_office_2

Enter: Senator Kerry's staffer. So, we delivered our presentation a second time. We tried to pawn off some beauty products on the staffer, but ever the law abiding citizen, she refused. Then we had to eat.

I Must Digress

But we couldn't eat before Kayla announced, after we've known each other for 6 years, that I had been saying her last name incorrectly for the past 6 years. And now, I was doing it in front of Congress. That apparently was the last straw.

So, everyone, Fioravanti is pronounced Fiora-vaaaaaah-nti. It's "vaaaaaahh-nti" like a soothing spa massage. Not "van-ti," like a mini-van. Got that?! Check.

I think I kept messing it up anyway, being nervous in front of Congress and all. Now that I've spelled it out, it won't happen again. But I digress.

Food, Then More Sweat

So we took yet another metro to Union Station and gulped down some grub in a food court. Then off to meet with Virgil Miller, the Professional Staff Member in charge of the draft law that brought us to Washington, DC. We ran. We hustled. We sweated.

Our meeting with Mr. Miller was fantastic. He was professional, forthcoming and very interested in what we had to say. He also told us how we could make a helpful contribution to the overall political process where this law is concerned.

But we couldn't rest yet. One more meeting, which unfortunately required us to become sweaty again. Not only that, it started to rain. Indies in the City. Without umbrellas. Wet. Sweaty. Nice.

Thank God for paper towels. We made it to Congressman Jackson's office just in time, and once again, we delivered our presentation. The staffers were very encouraging and made some suggestions for how we could continue our efforts.

Last Call

After many high fives, and completely exhausted, it was time to head to California Pizza Kitchen. Sick and tired of being sweaty and tired, we decided to take a cab since we did not have to rush.

When we got to CPK, we found our second wind. Who wouldn't? Just look at these Indies In The City.

Standing: Kelly Bloom (Southern Soapers), Lela Barker, Kayla Fioravaaaaaahh-nti, Anne-Marie Faiola, Daniela Maldonado (Hello Bath & Body), Funlayo Alibi (Shea Radiance)

Jamila and Michele looking fetching, not sweaty.

Jamila_and_michele

We enjoyed a fantastic time drinking cocktails (on me!) and eating delicious things like white pizza, Tuscan hummus, pear and Gorgonzola cheese pizza and Thai crunch salad. It was the perfect way to cap an energizing, enlightening, empowering and, yes, very sweaty day.

Go Indie!

Isn't it funny how some people think

It amazes me sometime about how some people think. I am in a business where I talk to a lot of different people on a daily basis about how they can be in business for themselves. Some people are so afraid to take a chance on themself that they rather go to a job everyday until they are 65 years old. I just don't get it.....any insight anyone?

Las Vegas EntertainmentOne thing that every visitor to Las Vegas soon discovers is that the city offers some of the most fantastic evenings out in the world. Las Vegas entertainment goes on 24 hours a day, and is one of the most amazing parts of any vacation in the city. Whether you want to see live music, a Broadway style musical, watch a magic show, comedy performance, or even go to the circus, Las Vegas is the place where you can do it.All of the major hotels and casino resorts have their own theatres and these are where you go for the best Las Vegas entertainment available. These vast auditoriums are designed in order to offer all the guests a great view of the stage, and because the competition between the different Las Vegas hotels is so hard, the quality of the acts and shows that you can see in the city are really first cLoss.Without a doubt, music is close to the heart of the Las Vegas Entertainment scene, and this has been the case throughout the relatively short history of the city. Perhaps the most famous act ever to take to the stage in the city was the king, Elvis Presley, who had a long career as an entertainer in the city.Nowadays, the kind of music that you get to see in Las Vegas hotels could be as diverse as a DJ Set from Armand Van Helden or a country and western performance from Dwight Yokam.Another popular form of Las Vegas Entertainment is magic, and amongst the best known acts that you can see in the city, the David Copperfield performances are some of the most remarkable performances in the world, while the stunning performances that Siegfried and Roy and their animals do are truly heart stopping.Over the past few years, spectacular music and acrobatics have been performed in the city by the famous Cirque du Soleil. There are numerous shows on offer amongst the different Las Vegas hotels, and many of the packages to go and see the shows also include a meal at the hotel.Although many people visit the city for the casinos, the fact is that the vast majority of visitors will actually take advantage of the Las Vegas Entertainment options at least once during their visit to the city. Thanks to all the different types of show that are on offer at all the different venues at the hotels along the strip, in addition to the various smaller niche entertainment opportunities that are available in the rest of the city. When you visit Las Vegas, it is a good idea to book tickets to any shows that you want to see before you leave home, because the most popular shows are always very busy, and it can be tricky to get a good seat if you leave it too long, and you could miss out.Top acts such as Elton John who play shows in Las Vegas regularly will sell out 20,000 seat auditoria months in advance, so if there is a chance to see him when you visit, and that is the kind of Las Vegas entertainment that you are looking for, then check out the latest deals for show tickets online before you miss out.

Etsy Store Feature-Designs By Janna

I have to admit ever since I moved to Atlanta last year I’ve had to rock “the ponytail” look quite frequently because the heat and humidity made my hair look like Diana Ross. One of my fellow brilliant Georgia Etsians designs these cute fabric ponytail holders, check out Designs By Janna at http://designsbyjanna.etsy.com. These holders come in various patterned designs and will accent any ponytail! My personal favorite is the “Pink and Brown Dandy Damask.” The prices are also pretty reasonable, a set ranges anywhere from $3.75 to $5.25.By: Kamilah Campbellhttp://thepinklocket.comhttp://thepinklocket.etsy.comWOLF125.jpg

A woman’s strength takes on life’s challenges with her head held high”“You’ll never fully understand me unless you live my life”“I maybe a lot of things but perfect is not one of them”“I don’t want to walk behind my man; I want to walk beside him”“Don’t be intimidated because I am a strong woman. I’m just simply in control of my life”“Don’t love me for what you see. Love me for all the things unseen”“This is the life I was given. You can love me with all my flaws and baggage or not love me at all”“I don’t need a man to make me a woman. I need a man to compliment me as we compliment each other”“Before I became a wife and mother, I was a woman.”“I don’t need a birthday or holiday to celebrate who I am. LIPSTICK TRICKS

How can I keep my lipstick from bleeding?Lipstick bleeding outside the line is not a pretty sight, but it’s nothing a little powder can’t fix. With wedge sponge in hand apply powder to the corners of your mouth, where bleeding usually occurs. This might remind you of eating a powdered doughnut, but what a difference it makes. Whisk away powder with clean end of your sponge, and your lipstick will no longer overstep its boundaries.

How can I make my lipstick last longer?Would it be great if you could go the entire day eating & drinking with your lipstick intact? Well, you can. First liberally apply your favorite shade of lipstick. Then place a tissue over your mouth, blotting all the while. Dust loose powder on top of the tissue with a powder brush, in order to set the lipstick. Remove the tissue, and then reapply lipstick. There you have it-beautiful color with staying power. For a complimentary consultation send an email to cmitcham@marykay.com or leave a comment.

How to Research and Evaluate Potential Residual Income Programshttp://www.RichAndRichHomeOpportunities.comFinding programs that offer the potential for residual income is easy to do. A simple search with most any search engine will bring you literally millions of websites that will clamor for your attention. Yet when it comes to finding just the right program for you, individually, suddenly the ease of finding what you are looking for is somewhat curtailed. Yet do not despair, how to research and evaluate potential residual income programs is a questions that can be answered in detail!First and foremost, take an inventory of your interests and then seek for programs that seem to be the closest matches. Remember that the more interest you have in a program the more likely you are to dedicate time and effort to make it work and thus the more likely you will be to make money with residual income.Next, find a product that will provide you with the revenue stream you can live with. Some will have a steady income potential, while others are seasonal and thus will have spikes when income will be markedly high only to taper off for months at a time. Riding out the lows and profiting off the highs is vital to making money with these programs, if you are able to ride out the lows. Those unable to find a steady income stream that matches their expectations may wish to consider signing up for more than one opportunity, thus generating a number of income streams.A vital step surprisingly overlooked by the majority of those in search for the most promising residual income programs is the market research. You do not need to commission fancy studies, but instead conduct your own market research for any given product you are thinking of making the main staple of your online endeavor to see if the market is already heavily saturated with others selling the same or a similar product of this kind. If this is the case, you will be wise to move on to something else instead. As you research residual income potential, you will find that services – rather than products – have one of the highest potential for generating residuals. Whether you are selling insurance products or financial services, the fact that consumers who purchase such services usually develop a severe case of company loyalty works decidedly in your favor and you can count on much repeat business in the future.Shifting gears, you may consider the product side of the equation by taking a close look at wholesaling. This is a highly competitive field, which in some cases might be a risk, but also one where you have the chance of making a lot of money if you are closely tied in to the consumer trends of the current market conditions and ensure that you have the wares to sell to retailers ahead of the trends. It is evident that residual income opportunities abound online, and for those inclined to do so, these types of business opportunities will at times also translate well into an offline kind of business!-----------------------------------------------------------------To find the best home based business ideas andopportunities so you can work at home visit:http://www.RichAndRichHomeOpportunities.com
