09 Essence Music FestivalfeaturingBeyonce, Maxwell, Ne-Yo, John Legend, Robin Thicke-- but where's Maze?Beyonce is back at the Essence Music Festival. So far the 2009 Essence Music Festival's roster is notable for an abundance of relatively fresh faces and the absence of a familiar one.Last summer, Essence Fest officials announced from the stage of the Superdome that Beyonce was already booked for '09. She'll join Ne-Yo, Maxwell, Anita Baker, Al Green, John Legend, Robin Thicke, Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue, Teena Marie, Solange and Eric Benet at the 15th Essence festival July 3, 4 and 5.The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Raphael Saadiq, Zap Mama, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Lalah Hathaway, Janelle Monae, Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, the Brand New Heavies and Dan Dyer are also on the schedule. Jonathan Slocumb will emcee all three nights.2008 photos: Kanye, Chris Brown | LaBelle, Jill Scott, LL Cool J | More »"To mark the Essence Music Festival's 15-year anniversary, we wanted to really celebrate all the forms of music that have been central to the event's history," said Michelle Ebanks, president of Essence Communications Inc., the festival's parent company."We made every effort to come up with a special lineup that's multi-generational and spans diverse genres. It brings together heritage artists, new chart-topping acts and local favorites in New Orleans."One notable omission from the announced roster: Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, the closing act for all 14 previous Essence festivals, including the 2006 post-Katrina Essence-in-exile in Houston.Longtime Beverly publicist Reve Gibson confirmed late Wednesday that Maze is not performing at Essence this year. "We're definitely not doing it," Gibson said, without elaborating.Essence organizers plan to reveal additional acts in the months leading up to the festival, along with the night-by-night roster.Augmenting the nighttime concerts at the Dome are free, daytime empowerment seminars at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The July 3 sessions include "Black Women in the Media" featuring former "Apprentice" star Omarosa.
If you plan to do some Internet marketing to promote your business endeavor, you should seriously consider email marketing as at least one tier of your Internet marketing campaign. Many business owners shy away from email marketing because they believe all email marketing campaigns are purely spam. However, this is not true and not partaking in this type of marketing can cause your business to lose out on a great deal of business. By not appealing to potential customers via email, your business may lose a great deal of business to competitors who are using email marketing campaigns to reach customers around the world. However, the first step of an email marketing campaign should be creating an email distribution list. This article will discuss some popular options for doing this and should help the reader to learn more about what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to email marketing.Once you have made the decision to start using email marketing to promote your business you are likely facing the dilemma of compiling an email distribution list. This is essentially a list of email addresses to which you will email your advertising and promotional materials. One common way to gain a list of email addresses is to purchase a list from distributors. However, this method is not very effective at all and we do not recommend it. The problem with purchasing an email list if you have no way of knowing whether or not the members of the list would have any interest at all in your products or services. This is very important because while you want to reach a large audience with your email marketing you also want this audience to be members of your overall target audience. When you purchase an email list you may be sending your email messages to some users who might be interested but this is largely coincidental and is not likely to be well received because the message was not solicited. Internet users are very quick to delete materials they believe to be spam without even opening or reading the emails. In fact some Internet service providers include spam filters which may automatically delete your emails if your messages are deemed to be spam. These filters run complex algorithms on the subject heading and content of the message to determine whether or not it is spam and are quite adept at weeding out spam. Therefore you run the risk of having your email marketing effort turn out to be a complete waste if the majority of recipients never even read or receive the message.A far better way to create an email distribution list for your email marketing campaign is to ask current customers as well as interested potential customers to register with your website to receive additional information and periodic updates about your products and services as well as other information which might be of interest to them. This provides you with a database of email addresses from current customers as well as potential customers who have a genuine interest in your products and services and who are interested in learning more about these products and services.Once you have a list of interested customers or potential customers you can send emails or create e-newsletter for distribution to the members of your email list. These documents should contain a wealth of valuable information as well as a soft sell pitch for your products and services. This information will be valued by the readers and may help to persuade them to try your products and services. You might also want to include useful links to either your website as well as other websites which may be of interest to your readers. Your content should also contain a portion which urges the reader to take a specific action such as making a purchase or at least investigating a product further.Join my email list to get F.R.E.E. Talking about potentially embarrassing issues is difficult in any relationship. However, talking about these topics can make people with disabilities feel even more vulnerable: How do we know when to bring "it" up? What will we say? How will our partner react? These are all common questions that many of us have asked ourselves when we are in romantic, sexually related situations. Fortunately, a little preparation -- and a sense of humor -- can make talking about sensitive topics a little easier.A Common (Embarrassing!) ProblemBowel and bladder accidents during sexual encounters are one of the most frequently discussed topics among persons with certain physical disabilities, such as spinal cord injuries or spina bifida. The reality is that an individual may experience the release of urine or feces during sexual situations. Although this can be an uncomfortable topic to discuss with anyone, discussing it with a sexual partner can feel like the end of the world. However, there is hope. Many couples have communicated successfully about this topic and have gone on to enjoy satisfying sexual relationships. Try these tips for handling this type of situation:Initiate the conversation before the sexual interaction takes place. Talk about it after a nice dinner, when both of you are relaxed.Start the conversation by stating this situation is very difficult to talk about, which will let your partner know you feel vulnerable.Talk about ways to handle a bowel or bladder accident during sex. State that you typically try to empty your bladder and bowels prior to sexual activity, but that you also keep towels, urinals, bedpans and handi-wipes nearby.Diffuse your conversation about this difficult topic with a little humor -- it will put you both at ease.Body DifferencesHaving a body that clearly looks different from able-bodied people can be problematic, especially when it's time to think about getting naked with a partner. Given that our bodies can look very different from what the media tells us is attractive, we often feel we will be rejected when our partners see our bodies.Even though many people with disabilities do feel comfortable with the appearance of their bodies, many others do not. Many people will go to great lengths to hide their bodies, such as wearing clothing that covers up their arms and legs or only undressing in the dark. While it can be hard to manage these personal feelings, there are some ways to deal with these issues in yourself and with your partner.Look at yourself in the mirror, and get to know what your body looks like. If you wear a prosthetic, look at your body with it on and off. Aim to get more comfortable with the way that you look. When you become more comfortable with your body, your partner will also feel this same sense of ease.Talk with your partner about your discomfort with your body's appearance. He or she may wonder why you feel uncomfortable -- your partner may be more accepting of yourself than you are!Test your partner's reaction by sharing one part of your body's appearance. When your partner gives a favorable reaction (as will surely be the case), you may feel increased comfort with taking more off! People often end up feeling better about their bodies when they realize their partner finds them incredibly attractive.Lights On, PleasePeople who are deaf or who having hearing impairments require light to lip read and view sign language. Given this necessity, lights need to be on during sexual activity, unless both partners choose not to communicate with words during sex play.Even though keeping the lights on may seem obvious, it may be helpful to communicate this information directly to your partner prior to sexual play. Having sex with the lights on can be erotic and exciting, but very different for those people who are not used to engaging in sex in this manner. The need for this discussion may not be as critical if you are being sexual with a partner who is also deaf or hearing impaired. That is, your common experiences may create an understanding in which this does not need to be discussed. However, if you do need to have this talk, consider the following:Find a way that feels right to you to launch this discussion. If it is important to you, talk about the fact that you like to communicate during sex and that leaving the lights on is the only way this can be accomplished.Use humor -- you may want to lead with, "You know, those of us who lip read do it with the lights on!"Practice with kissing before you engage in further sex play. "Making out" with the lights on can help familiarize your partner with being sexual in this type of environment.Discussing difficult topics is not an easy process, but with some planning and forethought, it's almost painless! Above all, base your conversation on your own comfort level, keeping your partner's needs and preferences in the back of your mind, too. The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable your partner will be.by Dr. Linda R. Mona - mypleasure.com/education

dont know how many of you have seen the movie "Pay It Forward". But i have years ago. It always stuck with me. I know over the years I have thought that it would be great if there was a site to help people who needed help. Without having to give up a kidney. I know for me living in Florida that if you need help you must be almost homeless to get it. So many people dont need or want state assistance for years. They just need a little help this month. Maybe you were sick and didnt get a full check, or maybe your alternator died and you had to use some of your rent money to get your vehicle fixed. Either way you just need your electricity paid for this month, or your phone bill. Or maybe your short on your rent $100. Not everybody has family or friends to borrow from. I know that for me a stranger has inexplicably helped when right when i needed it most. I hope that I have done the same for someone else. This economy has really brought home the need for us to reach out and help each other. People are losing their homes, their cars, etc. NO one is saying hey let me help you keep your house, instead people are steping up to buy your house from under you. I am sadden to think that is what we have become, a world waiting for bad things to happen so we can proift. Wouldnt it feel great to know that you helped a single mother stay independent, or a struggling family stay above water. I say yes.. so i created.... PAYITFORWARDTODAY.TK. You can go to this site if you know someone that needs help, or if you would like to pay it forward you can pay a bill for someone. I am not a web designer, nor an IT person. I had an idea and I ran with it. So suggestions are welcome. I am open for ideas. But i am excited to see what we can do with this.... isnt it about time?

They were hot this past summer and they’re still hot for 2009. Bold colors are still a great trend that is holding strong. While basic black will always be classic and a fashion favorite, bold colors are a great way to make your outfits pop. Now as someone that isn’t a big fan of patterns, I enjoy the bold color trend because it gives me the ability to some extra flair to my outfits without having to deal with patterns.I know, I know. I need to show patterns some love and I am working on it but in the meantime, I will rock those bold colors. I do realize, however, that there are some of you who have an almost totally black wardrobe. Or there are others of you who live life in different shades of tan and brown. It’s ok, you can do the bold color trend as well. Some easy and non intimidating ways to incorporate bold colors into your wardrobe is through jewelry, shoes, hair accessories and purses. If you are a lady that enjoys wearing lots of black, you can spice up that black outfit with a bold colored bracelet or a bold colored pair of shoes. If you are a lady that enjoys wearing tans, you can spice up that tan outfit with a burnt orange or red accessory of any kind. The bold color trend is not unlike the jewel tone trend. For more tips, check out this post I did on how to incorporate jewel tones depending on the most prevalent color palette in your wardrobe. How do I wear Jewel TonesYou can also refer to a post that I wrote about how to wear the bright color trend that was really popular over the summer. Honestly, bold colors and bright colors aren’t that different. The tone is usually what may separate the two. Bold colors can be bright or they can just be striking. For example, burnt orange is a bold color whereas candy apple red is a bright color. See the difference? Check out this post for more tips. How do I wear Bright ColorsAny questions? Q. I'm having a problem finding a foundation that is an exact match. The foundation that I have is dark enough, but it looks a little dull. I have a lot of red in my skin. Do you have any advice on what I can do? - Charmayne, Pensacola, FLA. Hi Charmayne! First, let's deal with the 'exact match' of foundation. Most women of color will not be able to find a foundation that is an 'exact' match. You can achieve an exact match (or close to it) by mixing foundations. The foundation that you are using is obviously yellow based. In order to make it work for you, you can use a red based foundation to warm up your skin. Also, you may set your foundation with a red based pressed powder. Try it and email us with your questions at info@illusionsbeauty.com.Be Beautiful & Blessed!!

Mentoring. It’s a hot topic among professionals these days, and young women in particular seem eager to find mentors who can help them navigate their careers, get into school, complete a project, or guide them in successfully combining full-time careers with satisfying personal and family lives. Here’s part of my problem: What’s called mentoring in the secular world of work is what in the religious world in which I also work called being prayer partners. “Will you be my prayer partner?” I understand. “Will you mentor me?” sounds ominously different. The way mentoring used to work, a senior male would anoint a younger version of himself as his protege. Mentoring in the old model was all about chemistry between two people who had a lot in common. It was also about connections - the mentor, who was several rungs higher up the ladder, would guide his protege toward a successful career- offering advice, making introductions for him, steering plum assignments in his direction.Leap to the present. Women have poured into graduate school, the world of work, and into leadership and they’ve found they aren’t welcome in the old boys’ club of mentoring. They can’t rely on men to pick female proteges. Not to mention the fact that women aren’t interested in the old style of mentoring - of meeting up on the golf course or over a cigar. So women have changed the rules and invented their own practices for mentoring.Women’s mentoring is more about commitment than about chemistry. It’s about personal growth and development rather than about promotions and plums. And it’s more about learning than power. A lot of it has also to do with the insatiable need in many of us to be mothered. One way the rules have changed for sure is that in the old paradigm, mentors chose proteges. Today young women feel perfectly comfortable seeking out mentors. There’s no denying that mentoring can be rewarding. Mentoring reminds you of all the things you never knew you knew. By stepping back and talking about your own journey, retracing old wounds, relishing past victories, musing over quiet triumphs, pointing out the danger spots, revisiting the journey that brought you here, you remind yourself that you’re not an imposter after all. “Passing on to others that which was passed on to me” (as Miss Ella Baker once said) reminds you of the investment you and others have made in your accomplishments and the battles you fought and won, with God’s help, to get here. From time to time a Mary comes along, seeking advice or insight, who reminds you of a younger self. She offers you a chance to focus less on the hurts and disappointments dotting your path, and to remember and be grateful for all the good things and the good people God dispatched in your direction at the right moment to cheer you and nudge you on as you struggled breathlessly to figure out what your next step should be.

Greetings everyone! In 1995, I was an executive assistant for the marketing department of the Mississippi Credit Union System. The company hosted an annual convention for board members and employees of various credit unions in Mississippi. That year the premiere guest speaker was Willie Jolley, phenomenal speaker and member of Les Brown's dream team. The marketing department was responsible for arranging, transporting and adhering to the schedule of the speakers. The guest speakers each presented or held seminars through out the convention and a strict schedule had to be maintained. The speaker I was responsible to primary assist was Willie Jolley. The convention was held in Biloxi, MS at the most beautiful time of year for the Mississippi gulf coast. I had no idea what I was in for. I assumed it would be the same as other speakers I had assisted where they were demanding and distant. That was not true of Mr. Jolley. He personally got to know everyone who assisted him and said thank you to everyone who kept his schedule tight and together.I remember when I first met him he asked, "What is your position in the company?" I told him and his reply, "Lisa, I can show you how to be the CEO of this company or have your own buisness. It's up to you."He talked every minute to any assistant around about exploring your possibilities. The last day of the convention we had people asking us about buying more of Mr. Jolley's books and tapes. We were responsible for his display set-up and also manging the sales of his merchandise as he signed his books for believers and fans. I told them we had sold out of his book, however we could take their orders and Mr. Jolley's home office would mail them their signed copy. There were six of us who assisted Mr. Jolley altogether. Just as Mr. Jolley was heading for the airport, he thanked us and pulled out every book he had ever written and tape he had produced and each was personally signed by Willie Jolley. We were all stunned. The books were hard back and exactly what the cash paying convention members were asking for.Today, four out of six assistants have their own businesses. The most powerful sentence I heard from him through the entire convention was, "All things are possible, all things are possible when you believe."It is always a blessing to Share, Dream a World!Read more…

Hi Ladies,This is "Part 2" of our series of Debt Management for the Professional Woman. This series will discuss what is "Good" Debt. Take notes and have fun learning!"Good" Debt-Student loans-Home loans/Mortgage-Business loanLoans to Pay for EducationIs a student loan really a bad thing? Not necessarily. If it's necessary to borrow a student loan, consider the process of value because it's investing in an education. U.S. Government Info through About.com identifies a substantial increase in lifetime income for student with an advanced degree over a high school education.A high school degree brings an average lifetime income of $1.2 million, while a bachelor's degree brings $2.1 million, a graduate degree $2.1 million, and a professional degree $2.5 million (Source: U.S. Census Bureau. So really, you are building equity in yourself. Not to mention, your student loan payments can now be deducted up to $2,500 on the federal tax return.A Home LoanA home mortgage loan can be a good debt for independent students who own their own home or the parents of dependent students (owning their own home) who consider borrowing through the federal PLUS loan.Mortgage loans can be considered good debt because the interest for money borrowed in a mortgage is tax deductible. Itemizing home mortgage interest rates is one of the few remaining itemization options on the federal tax return, and personal residences are almost always the lowest interest rates of all. Currently, 15 year mortgage rates average 5.75%, while 30 years mortgage interest rates average 6.00%.Business LoansAs with a home mortgage, business loans are another source of borrowing that allow tax deductions. In addition, a home mortgage or business loan is an investment that creates value; therefore, it is considered a good debt as long as it's not rolled into an existing long-term loan.Try to keep a second mortgage or business loan at a shorter repayment period than the initial mortgage or startup loan. If not, at least try to pay more than the minimum monthly payment to pay the balance off early since any extra payment to a mortgage loan goes directly to the principle. The rule of thumb to remember with mortgage or business loans: take only if using funds to improve or increase equity. However, even though home mortgages may be a viable option, it is still an advantage to borrow through the Subsidized Loan program before taking out a mortgage or second mortgage because Subsidized loans defer both payment and interest while the student is in school.Repayment terms are usually shorter (10 years) than a mortgage or business loan, so even though the student loan has a higher interest rate, the difference between paying a 10 year student loan versus interest on a 15 year mortgage loan may end up being relatively the same amount.Remember, both mortgage interest and student loan interest can be deducted on the federal tax return, but there are qualifications to both. It's important to consult a tax preparer to see from which, or both, types of loan you may benefit.Article by Terri Hare – elearners.comUntil our next series Part 3 - "Middle of the Road Debt", stay wise. Have a wonderful and productive week! For your debt elimination and management needs with little to no change to your current lifestyle and standard of living, contact:Tangela Davis, MBAFinancial Educator/Consultant704-299-1195tdavis@trinitystrategicconsulting.com

Greetings everyone!Power, time and information are variables that provide intuition to planning your marketing. Before you do anything you gotta have a plan to follow and a successful plan begins with being in tune with these variables. The variable addressed in Part 1 is the Power variable. Power is a way of getting from one place to another. Power is something we just don't say out loud that we need or want. We all can easily say we need or want money, but rarely hear someone say they need power. Power should never be "the" goal, but it is a variable that should be payed close attention to when developing your marketing plan, events, etc. . . for your business.First, let me ask, "Does money come before power?" If someone had asked me that question several years ago my answer would have been yes. I learned from assisting marketing rainmakers that when you have the ability or power to plan, to create, to organize, to rally willing help from others and to successfully implement a plan, everyone will receive financial benefits. We need food to sustain our bodies, and gas for our vehicles to get from point A to point B. Food and gas are objects of power just as money. When developing your marketing, list your power resources. Friends, place to organize, money, attitude, persistence, and any resource that can be used to produce your plan. Now access the power resources of your competition. Are they steadfast, have persistent attitudes, and are they on top of the their game? Can your competition beat you to the punch because of better power resources? This is important. If you believe this to be true then it is time to explore, gather or capture other power resources and implement new plans and strategies.Everyone has power! If you think you can, you are right and if you think you can't, you are also right. Using your power to move objects like money, food, gas, and business ideas are within our grasp. Tap into your power resources such as:Power of AttitudePower of PersistencePower of ExpertisePower of CommitmentPower of Risk-TakingPower of CompetitionPower of LegitimacyPower of InvestmentPower of IdentificationPower of Rewarding or PunishingPower of FaithAlways a Blessing to Share, Dream a World!Read more…
