beauty salon owners linkedin

LinkedIn is the Rodney Dangerfield of social media: despite having 200 million highly influential subscribers, it gets no respect. Even though it is consistently ranked among the social giants Facebook and Twitter, it doesn’t seem to get as much hype from the mainstream media. But as a tool for marketing your beauty salon business, it provides a huge edge over its more popular peers. Because unlike Facebook and Twitter, which regularly exchange cat photos, inane one-liners and political rants from nutty uncles, LinkedIn is all business.

How companies are leveraging LinkedIn

You operate a beauty salon business. Your time and energy is scarce. So why should you worry about LinkedIn? Here are a few ways your peers (there are 1.3 million small-business owners on the network) are employing it to their advantage:

  1. Sharing wins: As a beauty salon business owner, you're working hard. Why not share your success stories? Promoting your accomplishments is just good marketing. And with 2 million C-level executives using the site, you might suddenly find yourself with some deep-pocketed suitors.
  2. Getting referrals: LinkedIn makes it easy to get peer and client endorsements for the work you do. Best part? When someone recommends you or writes a testimonial, everyone within your network sees it in his or her activity feed. This type of social proof is the BEST way of getting new customers.
  3. Finding new talent: If your beauty salon business keeps growing, you'll undoubtedly need to hire new employees. LinkedIn is a great place—scratch that, it’s the BEST place—to find new players to include in your team.
  4. Promoting events: LinkedIn’s event feature is a game changer! It has never been so easy to spread the news and drum up enthusiasm about upcoming events, sales and get togethers. You can even use their service directory to find professional event planners to help you.
  5. Boosting website traffic: A little-known secret about LinkedIn is that it’s very influential with Google; if you have a presence on LinkedIn, you’re likely to see a jump in search engine visibility, too. More clicks = more customers!
  6. Getting answers: LinkedIn is a goldmine for information on operating a successful beauty salon business. You can uncover great advice from some of the savviest business minds in the world in LinkedIn Answers and Groups. You will discover over 2000 groups devoted to small-business and beauty salon business related topics.
  7. Finding investors, vendors and partners: It’s a networker’s paradise. Whether you require some capital, a new accounting firm, or even a beauty salon business partner, you’re not going to find a better resource than LinkedIn. Anywhere.

We’re just scratching the surface here, folks. The benefits don’t end there. Pay a visit to LinkedIn, set up a page for your business and see for yourself. I know your time is scarce, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Pinterest

I know, I know. You don’t have the time for an alternate social network. Nevertheless I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t talk up Pinterest, as this image-centric social network has become an amazing spot for beauty salon businesses to:

  • Meet new customers
  • Boost website traffic
  • Increase brand recognition
  • Drive sales activity

So let’s run through why this visual social network so cool—and so effective as a marketing strategy.

Visually pleasing! Less whining!

Instead of being a platform for tedious updates of what people ate for breakfast or ALL CAPS rants from your weird uncle, Pinterest is all about bringing people together who have common interests, whether it’s fashion, beauty, art, food, crafts, architecture, photography, cocktail recipes, interior design..you name it. Copyblogger contributor Beth Hayden sums up Pinterest very well with this quote: “Pinterest is visually appealing, positive, and unlike Facebook, there isn’t any whining.” Can I get an amen?!

Why are marketers so energized about Pinterest?

For starters, the site is incredibly popular. Last year, in a five month span, Pinterest rocketed to a jaw-dropping 10 million users. No one was expecting it. Even social media watchers were caught off guard. Almost overnight Pinterest became a MAJOR driver of online traffic. Get this: Pinterest drives more traffic than YouTube, Google and LinkedIn—combined. Here’s another thing: users love Pinterest. They can’t get enough. It’s addictive. As per comScore data Pinterest users average 89 minutes monthly on the site and Google users average just 3 minutes per month.

So what?

Why should beauty salon businesses like yours care about Pinterest? It’s really quite simple. First of all, the site is a low-key, non-threatening method to meet consumers who are passionate about what you’re interested in! This built-in permission makes it possible to build new relationships with others in your target market. Secondly, Pinterest is a fantastic place showcase your products or services, stay top of mind and grow your “tribe” of like-minded people. Just create an account. You’ll see an array of businesses on the site, such as…

  • Beauty Salon Businesses
  • Hair Artists
  • Makeup Artists
  • Fitness Coaches
  • Yoga Studios
  • Non-profit Organizations
  • Jewelry Makers

The list is endless.

No excuses; start pinning!

Most businesses tend to swiftly think of reasons why they shouldn’t use social media—nevertheless the truth is, many sell themselves short and don’t become involved because they don’t think they have a natural place in a certain network. Now, if you run a bookkeeping business, maybe Pinterest isn’t the best fit, but then again, it’s quite possible that you might be a trailblazer and use Pinterest to showcase your business and have great success. Hey, if a plumbing franchise in Waco, Texas can make Pinterest benefit their business, you can too! It’s just too easy to sell yourself short and come up with reasons to remain on the sidelines!

You have a Facebook page. You have some fans. Nicely done. Now, like the smart beauty salon business you are, you're looking for some proven ways to engage your followers so you can acquire more of them and make the most of your presence on Facebook.

Engaging your fans is a critical piece to building and maintaining a long-lasting relationships on Facebook—and offline! Here are a few timeless strategies that local beauty salon businesses are using with great results.

♦ Spread the Love

Tell your fans how much you appreciate them. Tell ‘em often!

Thanking your fans for their questions, complimenting them on their comments, highlighting their success stories—these things go a looong, long way in social media. Many smart beauty salon businesses on Facebook run a ‘Fan of the Month’ promotion to encourage and reward engagement.

This is really savvy way to make people feel good about themselves and your business while also capitalizing on the power of social proof.

♦ Offer Coupons and Run Promotions

Discounts, coupons, special offers … your followers will NEVER get tired of opportunities to save money and get more value from their purchases. Pro tip: If you want to run a promotion for a specific geographic location, use the Custom menu when you’re posting to target your followers in a certain area

♦ Share Your Knowledge

You run a beauty salon business. You have special knowledge and insight. You can help people. So share! People are always grateful for information that makes their lives easier or more fulfilling. Sharing helpful tips is some of the best engagement around.

It also helps you take advantage of the reciprocity principle: do something nice for someone, they’ll feel bound to return the favor.

♦ Issue a Challenge

We humans are deeply competitive by nature and simply cannot resist a challenge, an opportunity to show the world that we’re pretty darn smart. Test your fans’ knowledge using fun quizzes and polls. Trivia, brain teasers, riddles … you’ll have your followers eating out of your hand by day’s end, trust me.

♦ Take Photos of Your Happy Clients & Customers

Don’t hire a professional photographer. Just start snapping photos with your cellphone and post them to Facebook. You will be amazed—truly—at how people respond. Data collected by social media expert Dan Zarrella shows that photos get more shares and likes than text, video and link updates. This also a great social-proof strategy: other folks will see people enjoying your products/services and they’ll want to join the party, so to speak.

♦ Ask for Advice

The highest compliment a business can pay to its customers is to ask for their input. If you own a beauty parlour, ask your fans to come up with a new beauty salon giveaway! Or let them name your new product. Make it a contest! Solicit ideas and then let your fans vote for their favorite.

♦ Use Insights to See What’s Working

Here’s the beauty of Facebook: you can see what’s working and what’s not. Just export your Facebook Insights data to an Excel spreadsheet to a get quick, clear look at which status updates performed best, what kind of media your audience responds to and what's driving engagement.

Steps in Becoming the Best Hair Stylist

10744086491?profile=original

When you are inclined in the profession of hair styling, perhaps one of your greatest dreams is to be part of the few yet very good top hair dressers in your country or even in the world. It’s a very difficult journey but not an impossible one. It is not even impossible for those who have no knowledge and zero training at all, for the most important factor to be successful in this field is your determination, commitment, and your very own unique eyes. If it’s possible to be the industry’s leader, where should you start?

1. Start by acquainting yourself with the numerous hair cutting and styling methods and techniques. This would eventually consume bulk of your time. Even when you already consider yourself as a professional, there are still some items to consider and lessons to learn. An aspiring top hair stylist will not progress when there are gaps and omissions in his or her learning curve. Neither can he or she keep up with competition if he or she is unaware of cuts and styles others are offering.

2. Start with a few yet loyal clienteles. Though you would want to be recognized by as many people as possible to be the best hair stylist, it still pays to be patient and let the laws of nature and economics take their course. Concentrate on giving your best shot even with a few clients that you currently have, for the good news (your very good work) will eventually spread out. Instead of allotting your time massively promoting your services elsewhere, just prepare for the load of referrals that your current customers may provide when you get your job done exceptionally.

3. The industry leaders have keen pair of eyes capable of identifying hair styles whether they look good or exceptionally good. They are concentrated on providing the latter. Getting a haircut and hair styling done good means that your work is merely acceptable and is common. Creating an exceptional look suggests that your work is hailed above the average and an exception to what is acceptable, that it is somewhat unique and can only be tagged as your own creation.

4. Bring your imaginations to life. Most of the time, the best hair stylist can already imagine the perfect cut, twists, and curls at the mere instant of seeing the client’s hair. It’s a very good sign of an artistic and skillful mind. Implement all your planned creations however odd-looking they may be. The top hair stylists of today made their mark with the help of their crazy ideas.

5. Search for a good mentor. Aside from the lessons which may be imparted to you, explore more for other ideas. Join seminars and conventions on hair styling. When given an opportunity, seek employment under one of the best hair and fashion stylist in your country or area, even just as an assistant. You will eventually learn some tips and tricks by mere watching and listening.

6. Establish communication or a strong relationship with each of your client. If possible, get to know their personalities and lifestyles. It’s not only a form of excellent customer service but also a chance for you to learn even more.

Introducing our first PWP feature of 2012: Kristie Kennedy. She is a Women's Beauty, Business, and Brilliance Coach. Having had some adversity, she has overcome it all and has proven it by her many accolades.  In 2010, Kristie was crowned the American Image National Woman and is currently Ms. Tallahassee, Fl. for Ms. Corporate America 2012. Being so talented, Kristie wears many hats. She is an esthetician, professional writer, self-published author, recording artist, poetess, jewelry designer, and motivational speaker. As a make up artist, her advice was featured on Tyra Banks' beauty website. Her advice for people in business is to: clarify your mission, define your goals, and execute your plan. It was a pleasure hearing Kristie's story and she shared more in her interview below. ENJOY!

1.Tell me your story. What were you doing before you started your own business?

It was on December 6, 1999 that I experienced being laid off from working as an Information and Referral Counselor for the Leon County Homeless Shelter. The company had to terminate 95% of staff due to a drastic budget cut and for the first time I was acutely aware that having only one stream of income could place me in a vulnerable financial state within a matter of seconds.   Two days later I was at the Division of Corporations filing for a fictitious business name without a real clue as to what I was going to do I just knew I needed to do something new.

2. What made you want to start a business and what is your mission?

As long as I can remember I have been a very creative and innovative individual.  When I was a child I remember my first business with two close friends we called it the Kangaroo Company. We sold women's shoes.  We pretended that we were the owners of a real store checking each other out at the cash register using our own shoes as inventory.  In retrospect, our imaginations were giving us a glimpse of what was to come. When your spirit is overflowing with a vast array of ideas its only a matter of time that you refuse to deny their existence and begin to showcase the inner workings of your mind.

My mission is to motivate and inspire others to believe and achieve their dreams. I breathe words of empowerment that transform fearful hearts into courageous flames of fire! 3. What inspires you?

Recently, I have been pondering that question after passing by a billboard that read, "What Drives You?"  I know many people are motivated by money but for me I am motivated by a desire to help people succeed in every area of their lives.  I want every hurting heart to be healed, every confused mind to receive clarity of purpose and every faint spirit to be renewed and revived.

What keeps you motivated daily to keep growing your business?

As I mature in my personal journey towards greatness I a motivated by the countless and wonderful experiences I encounter with others and the reward of making a difference in their lives.  Recently, one of my news articles went live and I wrote about an attorney who was making a major impact in our community.  He had no idea that I would be writing about him and after sharing the story with him I received an email from him expressing his gratitude and that he was honored.  I basked in that moment and whispered to myself, "priceless, no amount of money can touch this feeling." I aspire to inspire while instilling distinct value in the lives of others daily. It is a lifestyle.

4. Do you have a mentor? Who is it and why?

Yes. I have several on multiple levels. My mom, for matters pertaining to womanhood and practical life lessons.  She represents the truth that there is one person on earth who loves me unconditionally.  My mother is an emblem of God's love shining effervescently. My dad, is one of the most candid people I know.  He keeps it real and always shoots straight with me. My business mentor has walked with me from the early onset of entrepreneurship and I learn by her example of diligently working your business day in and day out.  I never knew what would be required of me as a business owner and I am stronger today because of the challenges it demands of me on a constant basis. My close friends inspire me with their authentic support and belief in every new idea that arises. One of them has a famous joke about how I have a tendency to wake them in the wee hours with my uncanny zeal. When your trail blazing new paths it's important to be surrounded by individuals who see beyond your current status and are secure enough within themselves to celebrate without feeling intimidated by your greatness.

Do you believe it's important to have a mentor?

Yes. In the multitude of counselors there is safety, wisdom, guidance and insights that we may be unaware of.  It takes a humble soul to acknowledge the need for assistance and a gracious spirit to be open to receive it. 5. What would you tell someone who wants to get involved in your line of business but doesn't know how to get started?

An individual's business is a sheer reflection of their core values and belief system. As a Christian, my faith in God is the foundation upon which I stand.  Additionally, one must make a lifelong commitment to know and grow.  Know thyself and grow thyself, internally and externally.  As you evolve so does the business. You have to become a sponge soaking in all of life, the good the bad, the happy the sad. Every experience is a lesson for change.  Seek out wisdom from experts in your field. Become an avid reader.  One of my favorite quotes, by Ntozake Shange "We lift as we climb."  Be generous and share what has been sowed into your life to ensure good is ever flowing your way. Most importantly, Never Give UP! 6. What advice would you give to someone with an entrepreneurial spirit?

Explore. Expand. Express.  Explore every gift and talent to see what works and what does not.  My first business concept did not go over to well.  There has to be a demand in the market place for it and it has to be made highly visible, with systems and structure in place if a high volume of sales are to be acquired.

Expand your sphere of influence by provoking yourself to move out of places of familiarity and comfort. Expand your ideas by building on old ones and developing new ones.  Express your creativity and ideas to a wide array of individuals to become more astute in articulating the vision of your heart. If you share your vision enough not only will it crystalize your convictions but it creates a comradarie amongst other entrepreneurial spirits.

The winter months can be so unkind to your skin--wrecking havoc by turning hydrated skin into parched skin.  With the dry, cold air outside beating at your skin, with the cranked up heat indoors pulling moisture out of your skin, there seems to be no rescue for your epidermis.  Lost cause?  Absolutely not.  You just have to make a few adjustments to your winter bath & body care routine:

Step 1: Use a gentle grime fighter that won't strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, and that will also add to the conditioning of your skin.  This is the base for healthy, natural, glowing skin.

Organic Love Body WashA pure, organic vegetable castile body wash! Lather up in thick organic goodness of sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and glycerin! Organic Love is enriched with African Black Soap and Green Leaf Papaya to eat up those dead skin cells! Organic Love's saponified oils delivers instant hydrated skin, non-drying!

Green Tea Medley Bubbles100% vegetable bubble bath/cleanser. Specifically developed to deliver light, long lasting bubbles for those long tub soaks. Still formulated to cleanse the skin gently, and effectively, while also protecting the skin's pH mantle and natural oils.

gtm+bubbles.jpg

Step 2: No more than 3 times a week, your skin should receive some TLC with a scrub/polish.  Exfoliating eliminates dead skin sitting on the surface, removes impurities from the pores,  and leaves behind smooth, soft skin.

Almond Whipped Cream ScrubA whippy body wash with exotic sugar, almonds, and Sweet Almond oil to boot. Pick up your favorite sponge or puff and cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and fragrance your body!

Cream Popsicle Layered Sugar ScrubA delicious yet wholesome scrub right in your shower/bath. Two layers of fine grain sugar (pure cane and dark brown sugar);both infused with orange butter (this will only enhance the succulent aroma), pure humectants, and natural oils rich in antioxidants;topped off with Madagascar vanilla.

Sweet Raw Sugar Honey PolishSweet Raw Sugar Honey Polish is a skin delicious blend of large, sparkling, golden crystals, six pure plant oils, and honey to boot.

cream+popsicle.jpg

Step 3: Contribute to your healthy glow by adding an oil treatment to your bath & body routine.  Topping the epidermis off with wholesome oils (emollient) is the best way to seal in moisture.

MarinadeA dry-oil emollient, that is great for those on-the-go days. Seal in the moisture after showering, by spritzing on this Shea Butter oil blend.

Rub Down A luxurious, multi-purpose oil. Rub Down's wild crafted, herbal infusion in plant oils makes it a great oil for massage, hair, and daily emollient.

Pure Body BalmA luxurious way to seal moisture into your skin and hair. A super emollient that delivers skin therapy to dehydrated skin, and brings relief to itchy skin.

The Skinny on Skincare: Super foods

superfoods%20sign.jpg

Super foods is the name given to a diverse group of foods found in nature. They are loaded with antioxidants, which has the ability to get rid of free radicals, resulting in less disease, great skin and longer life.
Super foods can be found in, fruits, herbs, dark green leafy veggies and sea weed. Of course, by no means should you rely solely on these foods for all the nutrients that your body needs. Incorporating them in your diet, regularly, will help in the fight against disease and premature aging. In addition, it won't hurt to use skin care products that contain super food extracts because, when applied directly to the skin, the antioxidants are readily absorbed into the cells.
Examples of super foods include
  • strawberries
  • gogi berries also called wolfberry
  • acai
  • spurilina
  • beans
  • pomegranate
  • blueberries
  • oats
  • oranges

Women today are more stressed and pressed than our mothers and grandmothers ever were. We are wives, mothers, businesswomen, students, grandmothers, employees, etc. Unfortunately, because of the many roles we play, women are dying of strokes and heart attacks in record numbers. Even the statistics for suicide among women is unusually high. So, how can we, women of the 21st Century, manage our many roles and health? Here is one strategy that was created with you, your life and your budget in mind.

The Three M’s: Massage, Manicure & Make-over

Massage: What better way to end your week or start it than with a massage? Thirty minutes of peace & tranquility; who could ask for more? A massage can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on two variables: the type of massage you elect to have and your budget.

The full body (my favorite), the Swedish, hot stone, reflexology and a plethora of other kinds of massages were designed to de-stress, relax and exfoliate the body. But be careful with this “M” because a massage can be expensive, hence the second variable. Check on prices from local salons; ask for references, check out the establishment’s décor (one must feel comfortable in a place where they are about to be semi-naked for an hour) and staff friendliness. Speaking of staff friendliness, you will need to look deep within yourself to ascertain your level of comfort with having a masseuse who is either the same sex or the opposite. Account for all of this when budgeting for the massage. I suggest going once a month or every other month as this bill can add up depending on the type of service you purchase.

Now, when you set your appointment ladies, do not, I repeat, do not let anyone in your family know where you are going. The whole objective of this particular “M” is to get away and have time for you to reconnect with yourself. We take care of everyone else every day. The massage is an hour made just for you. You can’t relax if your kids, husband or the office keeps blowing up your cell phone. Turn it off, bury it beneath your pile of clothes and escape to Fantasy Island. My masseuse, Olivia at http://openhandsmassagecare.com/ in Richmond, VA, is my ultimate guide to massage heaven, and she makes sure that no one interrupts my moment of bliss.

Manicure: Your nails and hands are your first impression, especially in business. There’s nothing worse than going to shake someone’s hands and their nails are chipped or broken, or worse, dirty. What does this say about their character? If they can’t keep themselves well-kept, how then can they take care of your business? Keep your nails groomed at all times, but more importantly, there’s nothing that can compare to how good you feel when your hands and toes look pretty. Find a nail technician whom you can trust to take care of your nails. My nail tech, Kim, of Beauty Nails in Midlothian, VA, is wonderful; I have been a client since 2006 because she knows the business of nail care, and the constant compliments I receive about my nails is proof of her work. So, find an expert nail tech and keep those first impressions clean, polished and perfect. Remember, though, you must budget for this two times a month, if possible.

Make-Over: I am not talking about a make-up or wardrobe make-over, but a spiritual/physical/mental make-over. Positive thinking begets positive experiences. We must not only learn to surround ourselves with positive people, but create for ourselves affirmations and self-declarations that uplift us. My friend and beauty expert, Susie Galvez (http://www.susiegalvez.com/), insists that the first thing a woman should do upon waking up is to stand in front of the mirror and say confidently to yourself, “Hello, beautiful!” Why? Because if you don’t believe that you are beautiful, no one else will.

Okay! I know it’s difficult to do this with most of our schedules, but we must find the time to workout (see Walking), whether it be in the am or pm (whatever works best for you). If you can, find a personal trainer. They can be expensive, so see if you can barter services. For example, I approached a local fitness trainer about working with me, but I could not afford his services. So, I offered him a deal; ‘you train me and I will give you a health and fitness column in my magazine.’ He accepted. Free PR wins every time.

Read one book a month that teaches you something new about yourself, life, politics, etc. If you are a fan of fiction, read non-fiction (ex. finances, autobiographies, self-help books). If you love non-fiction, read fiction. I love mystery/suspense novels, so let me recommend my favorite author, Jane Evanovich. Her “Stephanie Plum” series makes me laugh so hard, I get a headache (http://www.evanovich.com/). Try reading poetry or writing some. This will definitely stretch your imagination.
