There is a lot of emphasis placed on hair in the black community. Mainly because we are taught from an early age to associate our hair with our beauty. In fact, a lot of a black woman's insecurities can be tied to her hair or the lack thereof...This is so sad because there is so much more to beauty than our hair.
As a Black Woman, the focus should be to accept your hair the way God created it, and to ensure that your hair is as healthy as it can be. Hair can be beautiful at any length or texture...even bald can be beautiful!
We at Olde Jamaica Beauty Products embrace All Women, and our purpose is to serve these women, by offering products for all hair types, lengths and textures. We also encourage women to take care of themselves from the inside-out.

I believe in learning fromour mistakes so we can try not to repeat them. While reading some of the news stories on the state of the King of Pop's finances, I realized there are 3 lessons we can all learn from him.
1. It doesn't matter how much or how little you have. What matters is how you manage what you have.
Most of us feel that having lots of money would solve our money problems. The truth is that if you can't manage $500, you can't manage $5,000,000. As Michael's money grew, his appetite for things grew and because he had little self control in that area, he spent what he made. Only instead of going to the mall and buying Jordan's, he bought cars and houses.
"For unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required" Luke 12:48
The more money you have, the more discipline you need
2. The problems you don't resolve will eventually undo the good decisions you've made.
Great Decision:
"One of Jackson’s shrewdest deals at the height of his fame in 1985 was the $47.5 million acquisition of ATV Music, which owned the copyright to songs written by the Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney. " Associated Press
Bad Decision:
"When he ran into further financial problems, he agreed to a deal with Sony in 1995 to merge ATV with Sony’s library of songs and sold Sony music publishing rights for $95 million. Then in 2001, he used his half of the ATV assets as collateral to secure $200 million in loans from Bank of America." Associated Press
Michael's acquisition of ATV Music was a great decision. However a habit of poor money management put him in the bad position to have sell off and borrow against this very valuable asset. If he had not spent his current money, he would not have had to borrow against money he had set aside for his future.
3. Don't spend everything
"Jackson'sfinancial problem stems from the fact he continued to spend tens of millions of dollars a year even as his musical output—and his income—slowed down. In recent years Jackson financed these personal debts by borrowing against assets, and by some estimates his total borrowings at his death may have exceeded $400 million." Newsweek
This makes me the saddest of all. Michael didn't do one of the most basic things he could have done to ensure his financial prosperity would continue regardless of his album sales. He didn't save any money. Because of that, his life was culturally enriching for us but not financially profitable for him.
My most sincere condolences to the Jackson Family. Michael will continue to be missed.

It was September 11, 2001 that the world experienced a tragedy.
Children lost their parents, parents lost their children, Husbands lost their wives, Wives lost their husbands and more!
I remember being in my room watching the television and I saw images and before I knew it a second tower was hit. My heart hurt, my eyes
were in disbelief of what I saw. I prayed to my Father God and then I
heard the words to this song downloaded.
My prayers are with those who still hurt. We have not forgotten.

Scholarship Description
The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program awards fellowships to college seniors so that they may pursue independent research projects while traveling outside the United States for one year after their graduation. The Watson Fellowship Program is administered in cooperation with fifty outstanding private college and universities throughout the United States.
Students must first be nominated by their college or university, and then compete on a national level. Watson Fellows will each receive $25,000 for their year of travel and study. This year of travel provides Fellows an unusual opportunity to take stock of themselves, test their aspirations and abilities, pursue their own in-depth study, and develop a more informed sense of international concern. In selecting Watson Fellows, the program is most concerned with holistically identifying individuals who demonstrate integrity, imagination, strong ethical character, intelligence, the capacity for vision and leadership, the promise of creative achievement and excellence within a chosen field, and the potential for humane and effective participation in the world community. This program identifies prospective leaders and allows them to develop their independence and to become world citizens.
The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program was begun in 1968 by the children of Thomas J. Watson, Sr., the founder of IBM Corporation, and his wife, Jeannette K. As the creator of the Black Moms Club and the Black Parenting blog, I had the pleasure of interviewing Raven Symone, getting the inside scoop on Disney’s soon to be released animated movie, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.
Raven plays, “Iridessa”, a light fairy who brings light to all the little plants and animals. She also happens to be one of Tinker Bell’s best friends.
LaShanda: We’ve all grown up with Tinker Bell, how does it feel to be a part of the story?
Raven: It’s really exciting. If you go to my mom’s house, in my room in the drawers underneath my television you’ll find every Disney animated movie on VHS. When I first found out about this, I knew I had to be a part of it. I’ve always loved the part in Peter Pan where we have to clap to keep Tinker Bell alive. I’m thrilled to be a part of the story of Tinker Bell and I love being able to play such a beautiful black character.
LaShanda: What’s your favorite part about Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue?
Raven: I love that the fairies stand for amazing things like nature and friendship. They each have unique identities that can appeal to different types of young girls.
LaShanda: What can little girls learn from this story?
Raven: They can learn about being understanding of other people, being adventurous, and trusting in friends. And parents should watch with their kids because if you follow Lizzy, the little girl in the story who loves fairies and her relationship with her father who does not believe in fairies, you’ll see its also about communication and family.
LaShanda: We’ve seen you in so many amazing roles on television and the big screen, is ‘Iridessa’ different from the other characters you have played?
Raven: Iridessa is very different from ‘Olivia’ the character I played on the Cosby show to my character on ‘That’s So Raven’. She likes to play it safe, whereas those other characters were more adventurous, loud mouthed (lol) and take charge.
LaShanda: Do you have anything in common with Iridessa?
Raven: Well she likes to play it safe, while on a good day I’m adventurous. Like Iridessa, I am always down to help my friends.
LaShanda: We know Iridessa’s talent is light. If we had Raven the Fairy, what would your talent be?
Raven: I think I would be a water fairy. I like to go with the flow and I’d be able to stop it from raining, so it wouldn’t mess up my hair (lol).
LaShanda: Disney has given us our first African American Princess, the beautiful Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog and now we have the lovable Iridessa. What do you think about these new animated characters of color and their importance to little girls?
Raven: I think Disney was waiting for the right time to come out with these very strong and beautiful characters and share them with the world.
I had such a great time speaking with the beautiful and talented Raven Symone, who I've been honored to also feature on my SistaSense.com blog as one of our Successful Sistas who's made over $400 million in her career!
I have to agree with Raven on two points… I think most of us sistas would love to be water fairies to keep our hair nice and right during those rainy days (lol). And as a Disney Magical Mocha Mom, I first hand see Disney’s commitment to diversity and the creation of characters that all little girls and boys can enjoy.
Definitely look out for the release of the new animated Tinker Bell DVD. If you’d like to win one, enter the Black Moms Club Giveaway: Disney DVD - Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.

So you don’t want to eliminate your morning cup of coffee from your routine just to save a few bucks a week.
As a coffee drinker, I understand.
But what other ideas can you think of? No matter which books you read about money, you will never be completely satisfied with their recommendations because your life is different than theirs. What is easy for them to sacrifice may be difficult for you and vice versa. This is why it is extremely important to consider what you bring to the
budgeting table. No matter what source you turn to for financial help, you will still be a crucial part of the process.
Is what you are saving for worth sacrificing for?
This is the most important question to ask when you are thinking about changing your lifestyle to save for something you want. If you don’t want what you’re saving for more than you want your current routine, you will most likely not succeed in your efforts to save.
What Can You Do Without?
This is the second question you need to ask yourself when thinking about cutting back in order to begin saving. What can you let go of for the greater good? If you choose the things you eliminate from your spending wisely, you will not regret them or rebel against your own plan. This will help you to save your money successfully. Before you slash your cable bill, think about cutting back on going to the movies. Before you cut your grocery bill, consider not going out to eat for a month or two.
When you begin to review your spending in this way, you are enabling yourself to still be comfortable at home while curbing your spending outside the home on small luxuries. For example, before you change the stores where you shop, change the frequency with which you shop. There are many ways to begin cutting back and making small changes to save money. You just have to be creative while tailoring your cutbacks to line up with the culture of your particular family.
What Are Some Creative Ways You Like To Save?????

It takes time and diligence to carry out a successful business strategy. So unless your revenues are growing consistently and cash is flowing well then now may not be the time to take those golf lessons you dream about. Read further to decide if you should pack up your nine iron and head for the office instead of the green.
- Stragey and Fun. Sales, profits and cash flow are the factors that contribute to the livelihood of business. Without cash it is only a matter of time before you are forced to take down the "open for business" sign and close shop. Now I hope that you are doing well in your company and have the financial freedom that you desire. But if you are just starting out you may find that it takes more time than you originally planned to reach your projections. Remember the saying, "Time is money?" Although playing golf is a great way for you to unwind don't forget that each second you use on non-income generating activities is a second lost. So if you decide to add golf to your marketing mix be sure to do so strategically by building business relationships while you are having fun.
- Finding More Leads. One of your top priorities as the CEO is ensuring that your market knows about the products and services you offer. Marketing and sales are time intensive activities so be as strategic as possible. Some ways to find leads while golfing with colleagues are to inquire about business alliances, referrals, and networking in places that your target market hangs out.
- Lead Conversion. Once your game is over and you have a few leads the next step is to get good at closing the sale. There must be enough revenues in your company to support continued operations and business expansion. This applies for-profit and non-profit entities. It makes no difference whether you are running a sales campaign or a fund-raiser. Your primary objective is to get a commitment from potential buyers.
- Increasing Profits and Cash Flow. In business, maximizing profits and maintain healthy cash flows takes precedence over free time any day. You will be able to enjoy the benefits of being your own boss once your company has adequate cash reserves and can cover monthly operating expenses, contingencies, and investments that create new opportunties for growth.
In order to see how close you are to reaching these metrics conduct a financial review each month. All work and no play makes for a dull entrepreneur but too much folding of the hands makes for missed opportunities to grow. Your time is valuable and until you reach your sales capacity make a commitment to stick to scheduled income producing activities until you reach your financial goals.

African American Writing Journals
Each journal's soft-padded (yes padded) cover features alluring artwork by artist Aaron and Alan Hicks, and Dorothy Allen. Some journal covers are sprinkled with inspirational messages and scriptures. Although the journals are not full of words, they do contain a small Bible verse and that's more than enough reading for those who love to write. Not only do they look fabulous, but the spiral spine allows the journal to open flat so the writer can comfortably write without having to break in the spine or eventually loose pages.
The "Sunday Morning" and "Virtuous Woman" journals are a favorite for Sunday worship or Wednesday night Bible study notes. I remember going to Wednesday night Bible study with a plain ol' yellow notepad. Later I would be disappointed when my husband or daughters would grab a sheet to use as scratch paper. But with my "upgrade", I dare them to take a sheet.
What I like most-- once I've completely filled one journal I can place it on the bookshelf and get another one... same size, different design. And I might add, they look quite lovely lined neatly on my bookshelf.
Which African American journal cover is your favorite? When do you write in your journal? Are you a collector?
