This little known story has met a just conclusion, as Sophia Stewart, African American author of The Matrix will finally receive her just due from the copyright infringement of her original work!!!

A six-year dispute has ended involving Sophia Stewart, the Wachowski Brothers, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart's allegations, involving copyright infringement and racketeering, were received and acknowledged by the Central District of California, Judge Margaret Morrow presiding.

Stewart, a New Yorker who has resided in Salt Lake City for the past five years, will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as well as The Terminator and its sequels. She will soon receive one of the biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood , as the gross receipts of both films and their sequels total over 2.5 billion dollars.

Stewart filed her case in 1999, after viewing the Matrix, which she felt had been based on her manuscript, 'The Third Eye,' copyrighted in 1981. In the mid-eighties Stewart had submitted her manuscript to an ad placed by the Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works..

According to court documentation, an FBI investigation discovered that more than thirty minutes had been edited from the original film, in an attempt to avoid penalties for copyright infringement. The investigation also stated that 'credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers came forward, claiming that the executives and lawyers had full knowledge that the work in question did not belong to the Wachowski Brothers.' These witnesses claimed to have seen Stewart's original work and that it had been 'often used during preparation of the motion pictures.' The defendants tried, on several occasions, to have Stewart's case dismissed, without success.

Stewart has confronted skepticism on all sides, much of which comes from Matrix fans, who are strangely loyal to the Wachowski Brothers. One on-line forum, entitled Matrix Explained has an entire section devoted to Stewart. Some who have researched her history and writings are open to her story.

Others are suspicious and mocking. 'It doesn't bother me,' said Stewart in a phone interview last week, 'I always knew what was true.' Some fans, are unaware of the case or they question its legitimacy, due to the fact that it has received little to no media coverage. Though the case was not made public until October of 2003, Stewart has her own explanation, as quoted at aghettotymz.com:

'The reason you have not seen any of this in the media is because Warner Brothers parent company is AOL-Time Warner.... this GIANT owns 95 percent of the media... let me give you a clue as to what they own in the media business... New York Times papers/magazines, LA Times papers/magazines, People Magazine, CNN news, Extra, Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight, HBO, New Line Cinema, DreamWorks, Newsweek, Village Roadshow and many, many more! They are not going to report on themselves. They have been suppressing my case for years.' Fans who have taken Stewart's allegations seriously, have found eerie mythological parallels, which seem significant in a case that revolves around the highly metaphorical and symbolic Matrix series. Sophia, the Greek goddess of wisdom has been referenced many times in speculation about Stewart. In one book about the Goddess Sophia, it reads, 'The black goddess is the mistress of web creation spun in her divine matrix.'

Although there have been outside implications as to racial injustice (Stewart is African American), she does not feel that this is the case. 'This is all about the null,' said Stewart. 'It's not about money with me. It's about justice.'

Stewart's future plans involve a record label, entitled Popsilk Records, and a motion picture production company, All Eyez On Me, in reference to God. 'I wrote The Third Eye to wake people up, to remind them why God put them here. There's more to life than money,' said Stewart. 'My whole to the world is about God and good and about choice, about spirituality over 'technocracy'.'

If Stewart represents spirituality, then she truly has prevailed over the 'technocracy' represented in both the Terminator and the Matrix, and now, ironically, by their supposed creators.

Stewart is currently having discussions with CBS about a possible exclusive story and has several media engagements in the near future to nationally publicize her victory. June 13th 2004. Sophia Stewart's press release read: 'The Matrix & Terminator movie franchises have made world history and have ultimately changed the way people view movies and how Hollywood does business, yet the real truth about the creator and creation of these films continue to elude the masses because the hidden secret of the matter is that these films were created and written by a Black woman...a Black woman named Sophia Stewart. But Hollywood does not want you to know this fact simply because it would change history.

This is why the "AUTHENTIC BLACK OWNED MEDIA" is still vital to our survival and more importantly, we we must learn to tell our own story (Cora)

Also, it could encourage our Black children to realize a dream and that is...nothing is impossible for them to achieve!'

This guide is inspired by my presentation at the SistaSense Power Circle Conference; “When Your Passion Becomes A Pain: How to Fall Back in Love With Your Business, Rediscover Your Passion and Tap into Your Hidden Profit Potential.”

Service Professionals and Women Entrepreneurs ask SistaSense, “How do I stop giving it all away for free? More importantly, how do I work with clients who say they can’t afford to pay me, but are in need of the products and services that I offer?”

To answer the questions above, I’m sure most of my male entrepreneurs out there would simply say, “Don’t work with people who can’t afford to pay you, period.” Of course as a woman that maternal ‘I want to help’ feeling kicks in and this makes it almost impossible to say no. Trust me I know how hard it is to turn away the people you feel most compelled to serve, but at the same time we all know giving it all away won’t pay the bills. So what do you do? How can this work?

Before we get to the answers, let me first begin with a quick story. A little over 5 years ago I decided to turn my web design business / side hustle into an official work at home business. Starting out on a shoe string budget, my goal has always been to provide women, moms and other minority startups with affordable resources without sacrificing quality for cost. At the same time, as a service professional it’s frustrating when customers want high quality for free or little to nothing. Sometimes that frustration turns into confusion leading us to either start looking for new ways to boost business or a new business to try.

Rule #1: Instead of trying to find a quick fix or a new business venture, consider changing your approach to dealing with potential customers.

In the pursuit of profit have you ever felt powerless to the demands of your customers? Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a consultation impulsively overriding your policies, revamping your packages and reducing your prices just to close the deal? If this scenario happens more times than you would like to admit, try something different next time. Instead of fearfully going into the conversation ready to take any offer, work on improving your position of power by preparing for the conversation.

Write down these rules and let's talk more about about how you prepare to pitch to clients on small budgets...

Rule #2: Never lose your power in pursuit of profit.
When your potential customers start telling you they can't afford it, don't start a back and forth price drop conversation in the hopes of meeting them 'half way'. Even if you close the deal, you've probably lost all your power in the process by settling for a price point that devalues your original offer.

Top 10 Ways to Promote Your Website

top-ten.jpg

How do I get more people to visit my website?  That is the number one question I get from my clients. So, I decided to put together a top 10 list that will work for both businesses and non-profit organizations.

  1. Make sure your website has your keywords in the META TAGS.  This is probably the most important strategy to increase traffic to your site.  Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use "spiders" to crawl your website looking for clues as to what your site is all about.  These meta tags make their search easier.  In return, they give your website a higher ranking.  Here is a suggested list of  "Tag Locations"  you should consider:
    • Add your keyword or phrase in your web title
    • Add your keywords in the first paragraph of your body text.
    • Add your keywords in the ALT attribute of image tags.
    • Make your website search engine friendly.
    • Use your keywords in hyperlinks
  2. Add your listing on the internet.   There are free listings for you to add your business information to such as Google Places for BusinessYahoo! Local, and Bing Local Listing Center.  Make sure they can find you.
  3. Submit your site to Free Directories.  There are business and non-profit directories on the internet that are focused on particular industries such as fashion or education.  Even if you have to pay a small fee to be a part of these directories, it will give you and your business more exposure.
  4. Write Articles About Your Business.  You can increase your traffic to your website when you write articles in your area of expertise and submit them to editors as free content for their websites.  This is an effective “viral” approach that can lead hundreds of potential customers to your site over time.
  5. Create a Blog.  If you have excellent content, people will more than likely link to it, increasing your site's search page ranking. Consistency and quality of the content are key.
  6. Join a Social Media Community. Some of the best online social media sites for businesses include FacebookLinkedIn, and Twitter.  Also, search for social networking communities that your market is concentrated in.  For example, my major client base is African-American businesses.  I joined Black Business Women OnlineBlacks Network, and iZania.
  7. Join Online Forums and Groups.  The Internet offers thousands of discussion lists, online forums, and groups consisting of people with specialized interests.  You can join these sites and promote your business through interaction.  Just search on Google, Bing, or Yahoo to find appropriate groups, blogs or other forums.
  8. Include Your Website's Address on Stationery, Cards, and Literature.  Make sure that all business cards, stationery, brochures, and literature contain your company’s website.   To go even a step further,  place your business name and website on a t-shirt and wear it while you are out running errands.
  9. Use the “Signature” function in your Email Program.  Most email programs allow you to create a “signature” at the bottom of your composed email.  This signature should consist of: Company name, address, phone number, website, email address, and a one-phrase description of your unique business offering. Look for examples on email messages sent to you.
  10. Email A Monthly Newsletter. While it requires a commitment of creativity and time, creating a monthly email publication is one of the most important promotion techniques. It could be a newsletter, list of tips, industry updates, or new product information — whatever you believe your customers will appreciate. This is a great way to keep in touch with your current clients and prospects.  I am starting my monthly newsletter (Small Business & Online Marketing Tips) this May!  If you are interested in receiving a copy, you can sign-up at my website at www.gostudiogreen.com.

These are certainly not all of the ways to promote your site, but these tips will get you started. To effectively market your site, you need to spend time adapting these strategies to your own market and capacity. Right now, why not take the time to go over this checklist with someone who shares your business interest?  Use this checklist to take your business or organization to the next level!

Do you need a side hustle?

side-hustle-sista When I was working full time, I always had a side hustle doing computer consulting. Extra money was always a good thing, but of course when I turned my online business into a full time work at home gig that was a great thing! Since December I've been asking you all to send me your marketing questions (here) and funny enough I see that someone posted a question on my myspace page.
"I need a side hustle, something that doesn't require home parties and I can do from home with my children. What does a person do that has no skills and isn't crafty?" - Michelle
My Response: There are actually alot of things that you can do to make extra money, without spending a ton of money to startup. I for one love love love the service industry. If you have a skill, chances are there are people out there who will pay you for your time. My first real side-hustle was designing websites and working on local computer consulting gigs in NY. Overtime I expanded my services to include banner design, print graphic design, and coaching. ... But I'm a computer GEEK so I love doing anything computer related, but the skies the limit when it comes to the service industry.
  • Starting a Home Day Care or Tutoring Program is easy and very popular

10744089470?profile=originalIf you’re a serious minded Black Business Woman, I’m sure that when you saw the term Business-Savvy Barrier in the title of this post, you raised your eyebrows and thought, “What the what?” But the numbers representing our success and progress compared to women in other races are startling. Black women business owners have come a long way in the past 20 years, but we still have a way to go.

Despite the growth of Black women entrepreneurs, there are multiple challenges, specifically regarding the income disparity experienced in the entrepreneurial sector. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, although Black female business ownership is up 59% since 2002, we only generate a little more than 3% of the gross sales receipts of the $1.2 billion dollars of all women-owned small business firms.

These are the demographics of the top three women-owned small business firms by race: White (72%); black (12%); and Asian (7%). While there are approximately 388,759 more Black women business owners than Asian women, they generate $51 million dollars more in annual gross sales receipts. Conversely, Black men with small businesses earn an average of $103,310 annually, compared to Black women business owners who earn an annual average of $43,000. This is disturbing and ladies, we must do better!

This suggests that Black men are somehow more successful in charting their ascent up the business ladder, being their own bosses, and spearheading their own economic futures. This may also indicate that Black female entrepreneurs have significant hurdles to overcome outside the corporate setting without access to capital, economic resources, angel investors, and eminent business advisors with “real-world” experience to help navigate the rough business terrain.

This should be an eye-opener for Black women business owners collectively. If, as the data indicates, we are struggling with disparity in gross sales receipts, what will it take to change the numbers? How can we enhance our Earning Power? I’ve already pointed out several barriers that we must overcome, but there are also other major obstacles such as lack of market expansion. Studies have also shown that Black women tend to network and sell to our own people, because we perceive that they are most interested in our products and services. But by far, the most substantial hurdle has to do with being Business-Savvy.

Is the research pointing to a legitimate short-coming? Is there a Business-Savvy Barrier for Black women entrepreneurs? Strong Business Acumen (the term I prefer) involves having solid business management skills such as, financial acumen, driving strategy and innovation, critical thinking, and the ability to build strategic relationships. This goes beyond technical skill and the depth of knowledge that you may have regarding your industry. So, for Black women, the missing element of the success and financial profitability equation is Business Acumen.

Black women have brilliant business ideas, but we have to shift our focus to learning how to become Masters in Business Acumen. Our businesses have the potential to get us a much bigger piece of the revenue pie. So how can Black women bridge the financial gap and greatly enhance our gross receipts over the next several years? Here are four steps that I suggest:

  1. Become More Business-Savvy: This means cultivate a deeper understanding of the business behind your business. From a business portfolio perspective, you must be cognizant of the primary functions that impact the bottom-line of your small business: Cash Flow (i.e. days of cash on hand and speed of cash generation), Customers (acquiring, serving and retaining them), Growth (achieved through new or enhanced products or services, reaching new customers, or moving into new markets), and Return (as a function of margin and velocity).
  2. Develop Financial Acumen: Don’t relegate this to a bookkeeper and then glance at the numbers when you get your reports. You must learn how to interpret the story that the numbers tell and take the appropriate action (strategic and/or tactical) in response to that story. This means knowing exactly what your company's financial numbers mean and their implications.
  3. Constantly Focus on Business Strategy: The business arena is all about change, all the time, no matter what industry you’re in—and that's more evident now than ever before. Your business strategy must do three things effectively: gain customer preference, create a sustainable competitive advantage, and leave money in the bank. To avoid the red zone of failure or to move from just breaking even, you must operate more strategically.
  4. Understand the Power of Positioning: Whether you are a new business owner or seasoned, you wear the mantle of a business leader. Innovation and strategy within your business will be driven by your great ideas and your ability to execute and implement those ideas. Understand your current position in the marketplace, see where your industry is heading and then take a LEAD position – get in the front of the line and deliver!

To know how closely you fit in the statistics, ask yourself this question: Based upon your tax return from 2011, would your accountant say that you have a “business” or a “hobby”? I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

I have a new virtual service coming on October 16, 2012 that can help you enhance your Business Acumen.  Take a look at this e-Brochure to learn more.  If you are serious about becoming a Business-Savvy Black Woman and want to increase your earning potential, the MBA Center for Women can help you! 10744073887?profile=originalFeatured this week on News One: Marcia Adams of College Park, Ga., and her boyfriend went to a convenience store to buy a chocolate candy bar and decided to purchase two Quik Pik lottery tickets. The tickets were bought less than an hour before the drawing, and two days later, she was $72 million richer.

Adams, a corporate account doesn't plan on leaving her job. She said:

I love what I do.  I have a purpose.

Apart from the fact that she won $72 million dollars I think its great that she wants to keep working. I don't think most people love what they do and find it gives them purpose. Do you? Do you think she's got the right idea or would you quit everything and take a break?

If I personally were to win that kind of money while I would probably take a mini-break, I think I would really take a chunk of that money and invest into a TON of business ideas and special projects I've always dreamed of getting off the ground. Really do things the right way.
