Airline Cuts

Tuesday, September 1, 2009, 12:39pm CDT | Modified: Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 7:35amAMR to cut 921 flight attendant jobsDallas Business JournalAmerican Airlines Inc. said Tuesday that 921 flight attendant positions will be eliminated, effective Oct. 1. The move will help the airline reach its previously announced goal of cutting 1,200 flight attendant jobs by the end of the year. The airline had delayed the cuts to allow time for flight attendants to accept voluntary leaves. In a statement, American said the reductions include "449 voluntary options, 224 involuntary overage leaves and 228 furloughs.”Flight attendants who volunteered to accept leaves saved 279 jobs from ending up on an involuntary furlough list, the airline said. With a two-month involuntary leave, 244 flight attendants will preserve their jobs while also allowing other flight attendants to continue flying. After accounting for the overage leaves, travel separations and modified flying schedules, the airline still had to eliminate 228 flight attendant positions to reach its goal of cutting 1,200 positions by October.American announced in late spring that the carrier would make the cuts to help keep the airline's operational expenses in line with the business demands of the current economy.Southwest Airlines Co. will cut 42 round-trip flights but add another 32 round-trip flights for schedules that run from Jan. 10 through March 12.The changes will mean a loss of 10 round-trip flights during the early 2010 travel period, Southwest said. A spokesman for the airline said 92 markets will be affected by the changes. The only adjustment in North Texas is the addition of one flight between Dallas and Houston, Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE: LUV) said. The airline says it's adjusting its flight schedule due to changing traffic patterns.Southwest uses optimization technology to help assess customer demand and add value, a spokeswoman for the airline said, noting that scheduling changes at Southwest occur throughout the year.

You Can Do It!

Naomi's Notes: YOU can do it!by: Naomi HulmeYOU can do it!You CAN DO it!You can do IT!We make our dreams come true or not. It is all up to each of us to make those things happen that we wish for and want. Whatever your "it" is, whether a dream or passion or goal, you really "can do" it if you want it bad enough and work at it hard enough. Ignore the "can'ts" that you hear in your own mind and from others. We have so many choices each day. Think back a year ago of missed opportunities that either you weren't financially or professionally or emotionally ready for. What if you had planned ahead and were ready for any and all opportunities that came your way. Imagine how and what you would be doing. Now think back five years ago and come forward. There were probably some opportunities that you were able to jump on and make use of in that time. What other opportunities do you see that either you or your family missed? No matter where you are today, you can choose today going forward to have a great, optimistic, positive attitude about every area of your life. You CAN accomplish anything you set out to do. Sometimes we have to get creative to get through the stumbling blocks.Start planning now to watch for any positive opportunities that God puts in your path.According to David McNally, in his book Even Eagles Need a Push, he stated, "Those who learn to soar have the courage to take a positive attitude toward life. They understand that life offers many surprises but believe that within those surprises are lessons - and that from the lessons comes wisdom. A positive attitude requires courage because it is a decision not to be defeated no matter what challenges life presents.""Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing."Abraham Lincoln"A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes."Hugh DownsJeffrey Gitomer's Little Gold Book of Yes! Attitude says, "A large part of attitude achievement is the visualization. It's easier to visualize YES! than it is to visualize positive. When something great happens, no one screams, "Positive!" Everyone screams, "YES!" That's the difference. That's the YES! factor."Each day, do one thing that helps you get where you want to be. Mix that one thing in your schedule no matter how busy you are. At the end of one year, you will have stretched and grown personally and professionally in so many ways. You will then start to add new directions to your original dream. Just imagine how much more purpose you will have in your life. Go for it!

"5 Ways To Beat The Recession Blues"

I’m not going to give you advice on how to make extra money, or save money during this recession. You can figure that out on your own. These are practical ideas, to really improve your life, and the way you feel from day to day, while trying to earn more money, or save money. Here goes…1) Stay Positive! If there’s one thing we don’t need more of at a time like this, it’s negativity and pessimism. There’s no way that you can have hope for the future, if you’re stuck in the downward spiral of negativity today. Look for the positive aspects of your situation. Hate your job? At least you have one! Unemployed? What a great time to figure out exactly what path you want to take next in life, and develop and cultivate new skills and talents! Broke? At least you’re not hungry and homeless! Hungry and homeless? At least you’re alive and healthy! Everyday brings about new possibilities and opportunities for change. You get the idea.2) Do a Self-Evaluation. Look deep into yourself and see just how much power you have over your life/situation. There’s always something in your life that you can improve upon, change, develop, etc. Look for areas that you can put energy into that may better yourself, even if it won’t necessarily change your circumstances immediately.3) Get rid of waste. Waste can be holding onto anything that isn’t absolutely necessary, or isn’t adding anything good to your life. It could be clutter, old clothes/shoes that you don’t wear (hello, donate them!), things that you waste money on, timewasters, deadbeat friends, or relationships that do more draining than anything else. Life is too short! Make a change today!4) Focus on the future, not the present. Start planning that vacation that you’re going to take next year. Set goals for how much money you’d like to have in your savings account a year from now. Plan new strategies that you will use on your next job, project, client, etc. Focus on how you’ll handle certain situations in a better way next time around. Recognize how much stronger and wiser you will be in the future, after enduring such tumultuous times.5) Pray! Need I say more? I think this one is self-explanatory. There comes a point when you realize that you need help that is greater than anything you can muster up within yourself. Prayer is the only answer. (Oh, and faith to believe that God hears your prayer, and will answer it).

*5 Ways to Overcome Negativity*

With all of the challenges we face everyday of our lives, financially, professionally, personally, within our families and our relationships, not to mention the demons of our past, it's no wonder to me that some people look for any little outlet to release their inner anger/frustration on others. If you somehow, innocently, get caught on the receiving end of such hate, here are some tips on overcoming other people's hate towards you:1) Always take the high road. It's best that you stay on the offensive. Haters will always twist your words, and the meaning behind them, to feed their hate. It's just what they do.2) Remember that you're not who they say you are. Haters are typically people who know you the least. True friends and family, who really know you, wouldn't see the need to put out such hate about you.3) Decide at some point, that you won't even acknowledge the hate anymore. Do whatever it takes to remove it from your life. Stop accepting those calls, have someone else handle them or send them directly to voicemail, then erase them, stop reading those e-mails or comments, just choose to remove it from your life by any means necessary. That negative energy is not only distracting, but it's draining, and it will only cause you to feel down, and focus less on the really important things in your life.4) Focus on the positive. Even if the hate is due to a mistake that you made, or a belief that you have that may be controversial, acknowledge it, but remember that whatever it is, it’s only one aspect of your total person. Remember all of the positive things about your character, or your business, all of the great things that people say about you, or the great testimonials from your customers.5) Let nature take its course. I find that hate has a cycle. There are times when it's hot and heavy, and constantly being fed by haters who simply follow other haters. But, at some point in time, it dies down, as the haters find a new victim, or simply have to contend with the hate that they've sown into their own lives. Some call it Karma, or it could be the good old' saying "you reap what you sow". But at the end of the day, you can't control what other people do; you can only control how you respond to it.Stay positive, stay focused, sow good seeds, spread love, have integrity, be a blessing to others, and the haters will never be able to prevail over you.

Today marks the day of dreams come true.I wrote You don't weep alone within one week followingthe tragic event on September 11, 2001.My dream then was that it would be heard across the world.Well, life happens and sometimes we let various things getin the way of our diligence in pursuing our dreams."Confession of Robin Tramble aka Empowerment Diva"Last night I spoke to an awesome group of women duringmy preview call about a burning desire. So I got up prepared and my husband encouragedme to go ahead as I contemplated post poning once again. Life purposeand a passionate burning desire allowed me to laysome tracks for another power song soon to be released "Set time."My family was proud and we felt a sense of destiny and dreams alive.I remember my husband calling me sharing with me that a gentelman wasin tears while listening to You don't weep alone. It was then that I knewthe dream was still alive and the song must be heard, expecially bysome of those who lost loved ones as a result.Today that burning desire was still present and I pushed againsttalking about it and planning and found myself passionately settingup the posting of a clip of my song. Three charged in death of a girl !

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=6994096KATY, TX (KTRK) — The parents and grandmother of a baby girl who died months ago now face criminal charges, accused of neglecting serious injuries that eventually took her life. Now some children’s rights advocates are criticizing Child Protective Services for not intervening before it was too late.Two-year-old Amber MacCurdy died back in April. It’s a death that authorities say could have been prevented. CPS officials paid numerous visits to the girl’s Katy home before her death.Authorities say the autopsy revealed Amber died from an untreated staph infection. The medical examiner also found she had broken ribs and a fractured arm. When Amber’s parents and grandmother were arrested and charged with injury to a child, Randy Burton’s first thoughts were “that the case was preventable, that we could have saved this little girl’s life,” he said. The former prosecutor and child advocate with Justice for Children doesn’t argue charges needed to be filed, but he also wonders why CPS isn’t taking some blame.(Why don’t the Prosecutor make them take the blame and file charges against them…this is 3 dead children with DSS involvement!!!)Burton said, “To me what’s unforgiveable is that the system we put in place to protect these children when we know that they’re at risk, has failed to do anything to keep them safe.”That criticism comes in light of the fact CPS visited MacCurdy’s home four times prior to her death. In 2003, when Amber’s then three- year-old brother had wandered from the home, CPS recommended a change of locks. In 2006, when that same brother was found dirty and unsupervised, the case was investigated, but later closed. In 2007, when Amber’s other brother, a one-year-old, had a fractured arm, a doctor ruled it was not abuse. And in March of this year, when Amber’s older brother was the focus of a child abuse case, a CPS caseworker ruled the allegation unfounded, although Amber’s mother prevented the caseworker from fully inspecting her daughter.Gwen Carter with Child Protective Services said, “There was no indication from our visit to the home that the other children were in danger.”The MacCurdy case comes in the wake of the death of four-year-old Emma Thompson, who just weeks before she died with bruises covering her body and a skull fracture, tested positive for herpes. A caseworker decided not to remove her from her home because she didn’t have any other signs of sexual abuse. Then just this week, a three-year-old Montgomery County boy died from blunt force injuries. CPS had visited his guardians three times before his death.“We are taking a hard look at the work that we do and we are making no excuses, if there is something we could have done,” Carter said.CPS says it will be reviewing these cases with oversight from Austin, fully aware that people like Randy Burton will be watching, hoping this time things will change.“We expect and we assume that when we call CPS they are the white knight that charges to the child’s safety,” Burton said. “It’s not what happens.”All three of the defendants in the MacCurdy case have plead not guilty. The case is moving forward and the defendants are due in court later this week.

Media

What is wrong with us????Or should I say, what is wrong with what we believe in the media?Somebody help me here. I am reading an article written by Lili Ladaga, a Yahoo news blogger. According to Ms Ladaga, we parents are up in arms about the upcoming speech by President Obama to our children on Sept. 8th.Some parents and conservatives are blasting the president, calling the speech an excuse to brainwash American children.Mr. Obama told an 11 year old student reporter Damon Weaver, of his big back-to-school plan:“I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education; about the importance of staying in school; how we want to improve our education system and why it’s so important for the country. So I hope everybody tunes in."Now here is where my problem is. What is wrong with what the President wants to say to our children?NBC spoke with Katie Gordon, a spokeswoman for the Florida Republican Party, who said the party's "beef" is with the accompanying lesson plans. The guide for pre-K through grade 6 suggests questions students think about during the speech, such as "What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do?"The plan for grades 7-12 includes a "guided discussion," with suggested topics: "What resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What is President Obama inspiring you to do?"Will someone please explain to me what the heck is wrong with this? You have someone in a positive roll asking for our kids to THINK about what they have just heard. And what they will hear is someone telling them how important school is. How important paying attention and getting good grades are.Hello???!!!. What gives??? If I ask my son this or do this, he looks at me like, Mom you just don’t understand. Basketball is my future. Or, hey Mom, chill out. School is not all that important. I am going to be the next great Football hero.No we have a man who people take notice of because he is a successful Black man who made it to where, until now, I would not have even suggested that my son strive for.Besides all that, what parents are upset? I wasn’t asked if I was upset. Where you asked if this makes you upset?I am sick of media telling me how I am supposed to feel about this or that subject. I can think for myself. And I am sure you can too. They say the President Obama is brainwashing our kids. Brainwashing them to do what??? Do better???? Get better grades???? Make something out of them selves????In the Sept. 8th speech, President Obama will challenge students to work hard, set goals for their education and take responsibility for their learning, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a letter to principals."He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens," Duncan said in a press release. But a chairman for the Republican Party in Florida is condemning President Obama's speech as an attempt to "indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda.""The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power," Chairman Jim Greer said in a press release. Now, I am sorry but that is not what President Obama said he was going to talk about. Where does this fall into the speech about education. I am sure he knows a little 3rd grader knows little about the things we adults are concerned with. But if you bring them up thinking about how important education is, you will see a big difference in the grades they get and then the jobs they are qualified for once they reach adult hood. This is far better than what has been going on the last few decades.Come on people. When you read something the media puts out there, investigate it yourself before you just act the way the media tells you to act.I for one parent, am not the least bit upset about what the President will say to my children on Sept 8th.But then again, I wasn’t asked.Lenisa
