The Big Gyrl Now, entry #1

Ladies I need to share this with you. That's what blogs are for right? Well, I recently attended the Delaware Black Awards a couple of weeks ago. I am proud to say that Big Gyrl Clothing was a finalist for the Best Retailer Award! Unfortunately we did not win, but we are all winners. Well, according to previous emails sent from DelawareBlack.com, it was going to be an elegant affair so I immediately starting thinking about a fabulous dress to make. Life becomes extremely hectic and busy in an instant and I did not get a chance to make my dress until 3am the day of. I finished the dress at 10am Friday, ran errands like a maniac, and by 6pm, was ready to attend the event. The dress is chocolate brown on the bottom and mint green on the top. There is gold detailing on the bottom of the dress with mint green and chocolate straps on top. The neckline was a braid of mint green and chocolate material. The dress was sleeveless with a train in the back. I wore my open toed gold shoes with an amber stone in the middle. They were strapped around the ankle. The event was held at the Grand Opera House which is a very popular place for comedy shows, concerts, orchestras, and other events. So my man and I finally arrived at the event. While we waiting in line I looked around excited seeing who was there and checking out other dresses. The only thing i saw were suits, business suits, jeans, a couple of plain garments, nothing elegant. Oh well, I always stand out no matter where I go, its just a positive nature and disposition that I have and carry with me, especially at a networking event. What I did not like were elevator eyes looking back at me. I will smile at everyone but most women would look like 'umph'. I am familiar with it, I have always and presently receive the Umph look everyday, but what bothers me is that 1- you are a grown a** woman looking at me like that because I have a beautiful and flattering gown on and you decided to where something casual, who's fault is that. 2- Do not hate on the big gyrl of the room and whisper and laugh when you cannot say anything to my face, who is the weak one? 3- We live in a country now that has a black president and you want to keep a petty mentality like this, come on, are you serious? I tell you ladies of BBC and I hope that I am not talking about anyone here and I pray that you do not act the same way as some of the ladies at the event was. Don't hate on the woman doing her thing. I am a fashion designer, I take risks in business, life, love, and clothing, I am not afraid of wearing anything and do not have a care in the world who talks about me. Until you live for yourself, you are not living at all. For us to overcome the major obstacles of racism, glass ceilings, etc. we must remove the hatred amongst each other. Who was standing there crying at Barack Obama's acceptance speech, Jesse Jackson. Did you know that he was on live television earlier this year saying he wanted to cut barack's testicles off? But yet despite all of this, he was overjoyed that obama won, he stood there crying tears of joy, not hatred and it takes a real man like obama to have someone who said such a thing to be there. I go through the same 'umph' situations at work but eventually the same chicks that talk all that mess, come around and ask where did I get this from, and they learn to respect me and my business. The awards night was wonderful and I met some great contacts for business. I did receive compliments on my dress as well, met some future models, and politic'd with the guys. All in all, with or without creating enemies, I had a great time. This is the first entry of the big gyrl now blog series where I will speak of various big gyrl comedies, tragedies, and life issues and successes. Hope you enjoyed this and if you are a hater or umph girl, don't you think its time you made a change? Maybe if you focused your energy on yourself instead of someone else, you will be halfway close to where they are.Keep motivated and have a fashion fabulous week!S

“Why do bloggers put so much focus upon growing RSS subscriber numbers to their blog if most of them only ever read your content in Feed Readers and don’t visit your blog?”This question (or variations of it) hit my inbox 3 times in 24 hours from different people so I thought I’d tackle it as a post instead of individual replies.Let me start by saying that this problem can be frustrating. You see your RSS subscriber number growing by your actual visitor numbers remain steady - as do your comment numbers. It can actually feel like you’re wasting your time - I remember myself feeling kinda like this guy when I first noticed this happening to me: continued at the blogs listed below.

Why this economy is just what you need?Being a winner takes practice and the only way to truly test your skills is to have some adversity.I know I know you say but Richelle, did it have to be this bad. The answer is YES. My friend Debbi Somers and I chat about this often. A little background, Debbi owns Somers Furniture which has morphed from a convention rental company to events rental, custom furniture manufacturer for all of the hot spots in Vegas. Debbi's business generates close to $5million in sales every year. Not by accident! She says, Richelle, I have had to re-invent myself 4 times in the last 19 years. There were several years that I did not take a salary in order to keep my good employees and keep cash flow going but I work better in times of struggle.Instead of taking lots of vacations, I work on the business 24/7. It helps absorb the skin’s natural oils to help control shine throughout the day. And it’s the finishing stop that helps your skin appear smooth and natural. You can even brush it on over a clean, moisturized face for a fresh, no-makeup look.Most face powder is made from two bases: cornstarch and talcum. It basically comes in two forms, loose and pressed. Use a loose powder to set your makeup. It works best and lasts longest. Loose powders contain more oil absorbers than pressed powder, so it is the best choice for oily skin. Of course, it you travel, pressed powder is far more convenient to take along with you. Powder is an absolute must for oily skin. It absorbs extra oil from the skin and can be reapplied throughout the day. The finer a powder is milled, the higher the quality, so the less likely it is to cake on the skin. Finer-milled powders will feel more like velvet, whereas less-milled powders eel more gritty.There are several ways to apply both types of powder:A sponge works well for tight areas and is great for “spot” powdering.A brush is the easiest and most commonly used tool. It is great for blending, but you must be careful not to over-blend and brush of what you apply. Or best results; apply a little bit of powder at a time with a brush, instead of applying it all at once, to ensure smooth, even coverage.A powder puff offers the best coverage and is my favorite way to apply powder. Press a puff or sponge into the powder and then “roll” it onto the skin. Pushing it into the skin makes your foundation and powder appear as one with your skin and looks far more natural. To finish, lightly sweep the face with a brush using gentle downward strokes to remove any excess powder.A fingertip works well for a light powder application. It’s a great way to powder underneath the eyes, especially for mature women. Just dip your finger in loose powder. Rub your finger in the palm of your hands to brush off the excess, then trace your finger over the area underneath the eyes set your concealer and minimize fine lines.Tips:Yellow-based shades look healthier and more natural. You know I am the CEO of my company. Every Sunday the Team that I am on has a conference call. I love that we have an open call we can talk to each other. You know where everyone is from, and they are from all over not just in Florida. I learn something new everytime I listen. We dont have a serious winter here althought it does get cold. I have learned that our products are great for protecting your vehicle from the problems associated with winter. If you are in a area where it snows and have to worry about your locks or doors freezing shut.. our product will protect your vehicle and stop it from freezing. It protects your vehicle from rusting from the salt that is applied. I have learned how to detail a motorcycle with my "waterless product". I learned that it can be sprayed directly on the battery underneath the motorcycle seat because its stops the battery acid from corroding the seat. Its great for stopping rust under neath the pedals. In winter many motorcycle owners like to maintain their bikes but its often difficult to do with water in the winter and many dont want to use water, so what a great benefit to having our "waterless" product and being able to clean and protect it within minutes.Today one of the speakers said...We are in a recession but "I" choose not to participate! Oh man I love that. You have to re-invest your profits back into your business. So many of us forget to do that. Diabetes Can Be Controlled For Life

(BlackDoctor.org) -- The prevalence of diagnosed diabetes in U.S. adults age 20 and older has risen from about 5.1 percent to 6.5 percent, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who analyzed national survey data from two periods--1988 to 1994 and 1999 to 2002.However, the percentage of adults with undiagnosed diabetes did not change significantly over the years studied. About 2.8 percent of U.S. adult--one-third of those with diabete--still don't know they have it. The study, published in the June 2006 issue of Diabetes Care, notes that type 2 diabetes accounts for up to 95 percent of all diabetes cases and virtually all undiagnosed diabetes cases. Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both.
