"Be as proud of your race today as our fathers were in days of yore (long ago). We have beautiful history, and we shall create another in the future that will astonish the world." Marcus GarveyI love these words from Brother Garvey that he spoke almost 100 years ago. Isn't it funny how cycles repeat themselves? Do you think that Bro. Garvey, Malcolm or Dr. King ever envisioned a Black family in the White House? So taking that in consideration and the visionary words of Bro Garvey, what can we do in 2009 to help his vision of Black pride, unity and economic empowerment come to an even higher level of fruition? We can expand on Bro Garvey's vision of uniting more Black Consumers with Black Businesses. We need production facilities owned and operated by Black people! To produce the wonderful bath, body, beauty products, clothing, computers, CDs/DVDs, etc. We need to search for a Black owned business for our everyday products and services first, before we shop at the Big Box or other retail stores. Then we need a distribution operation to get these products made by Black entrepreneurs to the Black consumers and Black retail establishments! After that we need more Black financial institutions. I personally have both my personal and business account with a Black owned bank. We can take the Black Wall Street (Tulsa, Oklahoma) to a global level and create hundreds even thousands of self-sufficient Black communities around the world. With any major change in society, it starts with a handful of people with a united vision. Those willing to make the vision into a reality...these are true visionaries. Those willing to accept that everyone they talk to will not accept this idea of change...many will take the wait and see attitude. Let me wait and see if you can do this before I step out and try it. But there will be many others who see the big picture and come on board who are ready, willing and able to help do what is needed. So if you have seen or heard any of my previous blogs, you know that I am actively pursuing to fulfill Bro Garvey’s dream. I buy Black as much as possible. I let others know about other Black businesses. My husband and I even gave away 25-second commercials on our radio show last year, so that our listeners would know where to find Black businesses in my area to support. You are receiving this message because of the internet, which is one of the most powerful resources on the planet that we can use to make all of this happen. There is a powerful video that I hope you can take the time to watch at www.blackbusinessnetwork.com/TeamDollar that starts off with a phenomenal presentation of how our people dominate every single field we enter, sports, entertainment/music and now is our time to dominate in the field of business like never before. Trust me this video will blow you away and inspire you to do what you need to do for your business, your family and your community!Note: You may have to enter the site by joining as a general member to watch the video. When I was growing up, Debutante pageants were real popular. They were supposed to be a ‘coming out’ ceremony for a young lady, but were more of a lesson in who could raise the most money. There was always a talent portion, which I dreaded. Most of the contestants would usually sing or display some musical gift. I, on the other hand, am not musically-inclined. My ‘special’ talent was always orating. (Yawn!) Anytime there was any display of talent, I was the narrator or speech-giver. Neither I nor the audience appreciated my talent. Even as I became older, I would secretly envy people with artsy gifts while I lamented about not having a ‘gift’.As I began to explore my purpose and really start focusing on what I was put here to do, I realized that my ability to relay stories, both on paper and in person, is INDEED a gift. Wow! What a revelation! It changed my whole perspective about how I saw myself. You may not be able to sing like Mariah, work it like Beyonce or look like Halle, but you do have that ONE thing that is unique to you and the world is waiting for it to manifest. There’s a quote that says, “When you undervalue who you are, people undervalue what you do”. Haven’t you seen that Confident Sistah who, by other people’s standards, may not have the greatest assets, but she’s always workin’ it? She’s tapped into the knowledge of who she really is and you can too. Stop looking at what you don’t have and capitalize on what you do have and then start workin’ with whatcha got!

I signed up for LaShanda's free course and have been reading everything, everywhere in an effort to find my niche and business preferences. I have a long term goal that I can make short term moves toward and an old idea has popped back into my consciousness and needs exploration. I feel as if I've been blocked creatively but the ideas are beginning to find their way out of me now. It's also possible that I'm spreading my attention too far and wide and therefore haven't been able to focus my thoughts. And since when do I walk around trying to keep things straight in my head? I need to write and write and write or everything just spins around in my head without purpose. So starting tonight, my daily planner stays in front of me, not in my purse. I will carry a binder with me daily to jot ideas and journal.Meditation has also been neglected lately. That goes back on the to-do list.

Wow, I finally took a leap of faith that will be life changing. I handed in my resignation for work this past Monday, cleaned out my desk on Wednesday and am now on my last stages of moving to beautiful Atlanta. Something is drawing me there. Recently, I received interest from clothing stores desiring my clothes, have a fashion show on schedule in August, and tons of networking events are all coming my way. Is it the secret finally working for me? Is it God answering my prayers of success? Well I don't know for sure, but all I do know is that this is where I need to be in order to take my business to the next level. I refuse to spend my 30s anywhere else, especially home in Delaware. So, if you are currently residing in ATL, please shoot me a note and let me know what is good down there. I look forward to meeting you and working with you!Peace and hair grease,Syreeta RiosCEO Big Gyrl Clothing, IncFashion for the Urban Plus Womanwww.biggyrlclothing.comtwitter.com/biggyrlclothingmyspace.com/biggyrlclothinginc

Starting a small business is a great way to supplement your income. Whether you are operating your business from home or a storefront, practically every expense related to business is a write-off. Generally speaking, the government looks kindly on small business owners. They applaud the entrepreneurial spirit upon which this country is built, and they reward it with tax deductions to lower the owner's taxable income and help the business to succeed. Unfortunately, many owners end up paying more taxes than they should or they fail to receive their maximum refund because they're not aware of ordinary deductions that are available. Though this is by no means an exhaustive list, here are some of the most common:1. Start-up costs. One of the biggest obstacles for a new business is getting over the hurdle of start-up costs. Although it can take a large slice out of the overall pie, you can get back a portion of those expenses at tax time. Small businesses can deduct as much as $5,000 of starting costs in their first year of business.2. Vehicle use. The government allows you to deduct certain expenses for business vehicles, including mileage. Keep good records for this deduction (or any other, for that matter) in case you're challenged on any point by the IRS. If the vehicle is used for business and personal activities, you can deduct only the percentage amount of the business use of the vehicle.3. Equipment deductions. All businesses require equipment of some kind. The amount can be deducted all at once in the first year of acquisition (up to a limit of $125,000, as of this writing), or amortized over a number of years.4. Entertainment deductions. Who wouldn't want to have a fancy dinner on the government? Business meetings over dinner or attending business conferences in sunny Florida can be deducted as business expenses, if they meet the necessary requirements.5. Travel expenses. Traveling for business is a tax-deductible expense. Keep your receipts for airline tickets, hotel stays, and meals. Any service that was necessary during the course of the business trip can generally be deducted. However, expenses for family members that you took along for the ride are not deductible.6. Advertising costs. Costs for advertising your business are tax-deductible. These may include print, billboard, Internet, radio and television, or other ad forms.7. Legal fees. Businesses often consult lawyers from about business matters or to review contracts. The fees charged are deductible.8. Retirement plan contributions.9. Home office deductions - expenses like a % of your rent, utilities, insurance and many more.10. Educational expenses. The costs of classes taken to further your knowledge for your present business can also be deducted.Tax credits, which are dollar-for-dollar reductions of the taxes you would otherwise owe, can also be used to save money. Again, there are a variety of taxes, including those related to hiring certain employes; owning and fixing up certain realty; and being "green".Businesses do have an advantage when it comes to taxes. If you're a business owner, take advantage of all the deductions available to you. Be sure to consult a qualified tax professional for further information on these and other tax deductions.

No more tears......just cancer causing chemicalsBy Jovana RuzicicMay 28, 2009Baby products should not contain toxic ingredients, according to common sense as well as 40 + organizations lead by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) co-founded Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.Just last week, the Campaign sent a letter to Johnson and Johnson asking that its products made for children don't contain hidden carcinogenic contaminants 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. No More Toxic TubThe action comes after a recent Campaign-sponsored No More Toxic Tub report that found those two contaminants in over 60 percent of the 48 products tested. Both 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde are known carcinogens and formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes. Like other toxic ingredients often found in your shampoo, lotion and deodorant, they are not limited in personal care products. In addition, since they are contaminants and not ingredients, they are not disclosed on product labels. Not breaking the law isn't good enough when the law is weakThe line of defense for the manufacturers has been the typical "we didn't break the law" as well as the usual "small doses are insignificant." It is true that companies did not break the law. But it's also true that the law - the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) - is so weak that under it, the federal government wasn't able to ban asbestos! A chemical responsible for at least 10,000 deaths a year in the U.S.Low doses matterThe small doses are not insignificant because we are all exposed to chemicals in personal care products every day, several times a day. Those exposures are there in addition to exposures to other toxics in food we eat, water we drink, air we breathe and so forth. All of these exposures add up, and could lead to diseases later in life. The companies don't have to use the toxic ingredients, as alternatives are available. Even Johnson and Johnson can make formaldehyde-free products, as they do in Japan.Tell Johnson & Johnson to get rid of the toxic chemicalsWithout a tough federal law that would require the chemicals in personal care products be safe, consumers are left out on their own to make the best purchasing decisions. That's why we created Skin Deep, a cosmetics database that can help you make informed decisions when it comes to toxic contained in personal care products you use.Until the law is changed, you can join us and tell Johnson and Johnson that you don't want these toxic chemicals in your baby's shampoo and they should take it out!Posted at 12:01 PMFiled under campaign for safe cosmetics, cosmetics, cosmetics database, johnson & johnson, toxic tubhttp://www.enviroblog.org/cgi-bin/mt/mt-tb.cgi/10712 CommentsRosetta | June 4, 2009 6:05 PM | ReplyI have always wondered about the safety of the "tears free" formula of shampoos. It is so attractive, as we all want what makes our precious little ones as comfortable as possible; but not at the expense of their future health. I hope shedding light on this hidden hazard compels big companies to invest in an alternative. Otherwise, I declare that I will support any other enviro-minded or health-conscious company that IS willing to develop a toxin-free, "tears-free" formula. All mothers should be up in arms over this deception!Roxanne Black | June 7, 2009 11:57 AM | ReplyIt's so disturbing to me that companies knowingly put bad things in our food and care products. I have a child with Autism, I'm not sure what causes Autism, what I do know is that once I find out there are bad ingredients in something, I stop using the product and I pass it onto everyone I know. Eventually the companies like J&J will have no choice but to change. I just sold my stock in J&J that I held in my RRSP account. Enough I say!!!!!!!!!!After you've read this, GET THIS http://www.sherellee.com/plain.html

Pride in Property! Become a Homeowner today! You can still become a homeowner today. Please believe that there is pride in property! There so many benefits to owning your own home so if you are up for the challenge then you can become a homeowner today! Pick up a newspaper! Turn on your television! Ride down the street! There is property everywhere! You will face many decisions when buying a home. For most people, buying a home is one of the most important decisions of their lives. The decision is not usually an easy one. But, trends in home prices and mortgage rates, combined with the tax advantages of home ownership, make this an excellent time to turn the home of your dreams into a reality. When you are thinking about buying a home, you may want to consider the many advantages to homeownership:1. You enjoy being part of a community and a neighborhood.2. Houses can increase in value over time, which means you increase your net worth.3. As your home appreciates in value, you build equity in your home. This equity works for you ifyou decide to take out a home improvement loan or home equity loan. Increasing equity alsoincreases the amount of cash you may receive if you sell your home in the future.4. Real estate is an important part of a diversified financial portfolio.5. The mortgage interest you pay on your affordable home mortgage is often tax deductible.6. Homeownership offers more flexibility to make changes to your living space, such as paintingyour walls or putting in new carpeting. Also, there are added responsibilities that come with homeownership:1. You are responsible for fixing and maintaining the exterior, such as roofing, windows, andlandscaping; and the interior, such as carpeting, plumbing, and painting.2. You may need to purchase basic household items such as a lawn mower, garden tools, andmajor appliances.3. Upkeep on a house can be time consuming and costly.Remember, there is pride in property!Whether you’re buying solo, with a spouse, or with a group of friends, here are some things to think about when deciding on a house!• creating a realistic budget• picking a great real estate agent, mortgage broker, home inspector, and other professionals• choosing a mortgage• borrowing a down payment from family and friends• doing a thorough property inspection• making an offer and closing the dealTo get professional advice and more information on purchasing a home call Vision Investment Corporation at 877-799-0820! When school is out, what do your children do? Parents may send children to summer camp or special school programs or make other child arrangements. Some older children may go to work. There may be tax breaks for these activities.DEPENDENT CARE CREDITIf your child is under age 13 (or a child of any age who is physically or mentally incapable of caring for himself or herself) and you work full time or part time, you may be eligible for a tax credit. The credit, which is based on eligible expenses up to $3,000 for one dependent and $6,000 for two or more dependents, ranges from 20% to 35%, depending on your adjusted gross income (AGI). For those with AGI over $43,000, the credit rate is 20%. Thus, the top credit for those at the 20% rate is $1,010 for one dependent and $2,100 for two or more dependents.A variety of expenses incurred both in and out of the home can qualify for the credit.- Compensation to a babysitter, housekeeper, or au pair to watch your child. Also include employment taxes you may pay for a housekeeper.- Daycare costs.- Costs for day camp, including a speciality camp such as a soccer or computer campINELIGIBLE EXPENSES: The cost of sleepaway camp is not an eligible expense for purposes of the dependent care credit. Also, transportation costs to day care or paying for the transportation costs of someone working in your home does not qualify for the credit.SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDRENThe cost of education for special needs children, which may continue throughout the summer months, can qualify as a deductible medical expenses are deductible only as itemized deductions to the extent they exceed 7.5% of AGI). The schooling must be on a doctor's recommendation, so a physically or mentally disabled dependent can attend a program to alleviate or overcome the disability.Note: Outside-the-home care costs for a special needs dependent may qualify for the dependent care credit. However, the same expenses can only be taken into account once (either for a medical deductions or dependent care credit).PUTTING YOUR CHILD TO WORKIf you own a business, you may be able to employ your child this summer. Given the tight job market, this may be the only way your child can earn money and gain work experience now.Wages paid to your child are deductible by the business. Wages up to $5,700 in 2009 are not taxable to your child. If, for example, you paid your child $16 an hour for a 35-hour work week, he or she would reach the tax-free limit in about 10 weeks. What's more, he or she can use these earnings to get a jump on retirement savings. Up to $5,000 can be used to fund an IRA. It's probably wise for a child to opt for a Roth IRA; they usually won't need the tax deduction for a traditional IRA, and earnings in the Roth IRA build up tax free.If you're self-employed and your child is under 18, there are no FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes or FUTA (federal unemployment) taxes. There may, however, be taxes and other insurance obligations at the state level.Caution: Make sure you pay your child only reasonable compensation for work actually performed. Since the IRS pays extra attention to family-related write-offs, keep time slips and other records of your child's work.

So you've decided that you need a virtual assistant. Great! A virtual assistant (also known as remote assistant) can offer services that you can utilize in your own business or even personal life to help you save time and money. I have come in contact with many people that know they need help but when I speak with them find out they really don't have a plan of action lined up. In order to find the right service provider and get the most from their services here are some things to consider before deciding if a virtual assistant is right for you:Know Your Project NeedsYou'd be surprised how many business owners or employers have little idea how much time and attention is required for the job they need completed. Now you may not have all of the details exactly. Write down an outline for your project, take a step back and look through objective eyes at your project needs. Then evaluate what is necessary to get the job done. Do you have at least an idea of how your project should be executed? If you need help with the finer details consult with the virtual assistant you are looking to hire to see how they would execute the work. Then go back and fine tune your project description. It's essential to be up front with yourself and your business and say 'I need someone to help me figure this out.' This pre-planning will help you save time and money down the road and facilitate healthy and productive communication with your perspective VA.Determine What Experience You Need Your VA to HaveAfter you have determined what project(s) or assistance you need ask yourself what experience must your VA have. It may be very basic experience like typing and data entry to more specialized experience like project management, accounting, or marketing. Don't make the mistake and tell yourself 'Anyone should be able to do what I need done,' because that seldom is the case. Not all virtual assistants are cut out to perform the same work and each VA will have a different background. Take the time to write down qualifications that the VA should have or at least should be able to develop over time while working on your project. Also remember the years of experience your VA has in certain areas always adds value.Don't Always Try to Go CheapWe've all heard the saying 'You get what you pay for.' Money is used in exchange for a product or service and also as a motivator. We all want to be paid for our services or what our products are worth. So if you don't know how much you should fairly pay someone consider looking at wage and salary charts online. Chances are if you hire someone with the intention to pay them under wage you may not get the desired results you are looking for and in the long run this will cost you and your business more time and money. Don't expect stellar or professional results if you are only willing to hire someone for minimum wage or less. Create your budget and decide how serious you are about your business. Your level of seriousness about your business will determine how far you are willing to go to hire the proper, professional help you need and at the appropriate cost.Determine the Level of Communication You Need With Your VAWe would all agree communication is extremely important in any business. How many of us really follow this advice? It is important that when you commission a VA to work with you to decide how much communication you need with them and to find out what degree of communication your VA is comfortable with. As the employer you are coming to the VA for services so make efforts to not only check-in and see if your work is getting done but to also ask your VA if there are things he or she may need from you, then provide what it is they need. Work to establish regular meetings via phone or remote meeting to speak with your VA, provide your schedule so your VA knows where you will be and respond to emails from your VA. Remember one of the reasons you have a virtual assistant is to have someone that works remotely. If you are not comfortable with email to help facilitate communication chances are you are not ready to have a VA. Also remember your VA has a life too. Some people make the mistake of calling their VA too much during working hours, after business hours or on the weekends. Respect their time like you would anyone else and establish your level of communication.Do you want to use this article on your website or blog?
