It is hard to believe that after my many years of schooling (secondary and post) the following facts about the Statue of Liberty were never taught.
Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people including myself have
visited the Statue of Liberty over the years yet I'm unable to find one
person who knows the true history behind the Statue...amazing!
Yes, amazing that so much important Black history (such as this) is hidden from us (Black and White). What makes this even worse is the fact that the current twist on history perpetuates and promotes white supremacy at the expense of Black Pride!
During my visit to France I saw the original Statue of Liberty. However,
there was a difference...the statue in France is BLACK!!!!!! "Ya learn
something new everyday!"
The Statue of Liberty was originally a Black woman. But, as memory serves, it was because the model was Black. In a book called "The Journey of The Songhai People," as Dr. Jim Haskins (a member of the National Education Advisory Committee of the Liberty-Ellis Island Committee, professor of English at the University of Florida , and prolific Black author) points out that is what stimulated the original idea for that 151 foot statue in the harbor. He says that the idea for the creation of the statue initially was to acknowledge the part that Black soldiers played in the ending of Black African Bondage in the United States .
It was created in the mind of the French historian Edourd de Laboulaye,
Chairman of the French Anti-Slavery Society, who, together with sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, proposed to the French government that the people of France present to the people of the United States through the American Abolitionist Society, the gift of a Statue of Liberty in recognition of the fact that Black soldiers won the Civil War in the United States. It was widely known then that it was Black soldiers who played the pivotal role in winning the war, and this gift would be a tribute to their prowess.
Suzanne Nakasian, director of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island
Foundations' National Ethnic Campaign said that the Black Americans' direct connection to Lady Liberty is unknown to the majority of Americans, BLACK or WHITE.
When the statue was presented to the US . Minister to France in 1884, it is said that he remonstrated that the dominant view of the broken shackles would be offensive to the U.S. South because the statue was a reminder of Blacks winning their freedom. It was a reminder to a beaten South of the ones who caused their defeat, their despised former captives.
Documents of Proof:
1.) You may go and see the original model of the Statue of Liberty, with the broken chains at her feet and in her left hand. Go to the Museum of the City of NY, Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street (212) 534-1672 or call the same number and dial ext. 208 and speak to Peter Simmons and he can send you some documentation.
2.) Check with the N.Y. Times magazine, part II May 18, 1986.
3.) The dark original face of the Statue of Liberty can be seen in the N.Y. Post June 17, 1986, also the Post stated the reason for the broken chains at her feet.
4.) Finally, you may check with the French Mission or the French Embassy at the U.N. or in Washington , D.C. and ask for some original French material on the Statue of Liberty, including the Bartholdi original model. You can call in September (202) 944-6060 or 6400.
Please pass this information along!
Be sure to send it to people with children!

If you have been in business for a while you are likely to run into periods of burnout. You will recognize it when you see it because it is where creativity takes a nose dive and your get up and go seems to leave without letting you know. I have worked with lots of women business owners and there is a common thread that weaves many of them together. Here are a few quick observations on how people with the business blahs have managed to get the wind back in their sail.
Re-evaluate
One of the things that I notice among those going through periods of burn out is a lack of clear focus in not knowing which way to go. If you ever find yourself feeling that way take some time to re-evaluate and ask yourself what it is about your company that you most enjoy right now. Many times when you’re stuck it’s that roadblock that has your feet feeling like led and unable to move. Brainstorm with others about the direction of your company. You may simply need someone to help break that cement up with you so that you can get moving again.
Another thing that you can do if you are thinking, “Hey, this is my business. I want it to succeed but I don’t have the motivation." is to ask yourself “What are the obstacles that you are facing in your business today that keeps you from seeing the forest from the trees?”
Re-connect
Next, reconnect with exactly why you are in business in the first place. Be honest with yourself. If it’s something that you are really passionate about then connect with that passion again. Maybe it’s not passion at all but the use of a skill that is helping you to temporarily make ends meet. Be honest about that, too, because when you can do that then you can move on to creating a game plan and designing a company that is successful. After all, the goal is to own a company that you can wake up to and say that I am proud to own this business.
Re-structure
Perhaps there is something in the business that you do not want to do. Think of how you can change that. Maybe it is certain aspects of the business that you don’t like to handle. How can you eventually get away from those tasks and create a pre-exit plan where you are doing what you love versus working in your business? Begin mapping it out today so that in the end when you set sail again you will do so knowing that you did it your way!
And if part of the fatigue in running your business comes from overwhelm in financial management and poor cash flows then I invite you to sign up for my newsletter at www.tbsusa.com where you will receive tips and access to resources that will help guide you in a more profitable direction.

This book has a great treasury of stories about executive people of color, their trials, and their successes. The authors clearly take thestories beyond “surface political polish” and delve into what each ofthese people learned through trial and error. The leaders did not usetheir race or gender as a crutch; instead they honed in on criticalskills that helped them to become strong leaders.
Reading the book inspired me to revisit the essential mindsets article I wrote a few months ago for my blog, and I want to share withyou what I have discovered to be common mindset themes within my circleof experience and resources for professional women in advanced careers.
Read on to find out if you can identify with any of these.
7 Essential Mindsets
No matter what industry you are in, or what degree you bear, in order to be successfully branded in the corporate arena and beyond, you musthave solid business skills. To understand economic indicators, businessstrategy, and basic survival techniques be consciously invested inlearning more about the business side of what you do.
I often hear that phrase used by one of my favorite “unconventional” marketers, Andrew Lock of the website, Help My Business Sucks, when hesays “Everything is marketing & marketing is everything”. Since Ifirst heard Andrew use this phrase, I knew that it was true. Just lookat the number of ads and visual promotions you are exposed to every day.The key is to ensure that you market only what you know you candeliver – thus, authenticity is a must in marketing your career brand.
In order to achieve higher levels of career success, it is important to establish and maintain solid relationships with key influencers andresources in a way that both parties understand the advantage. When yousurround yourself with people who are not like-minded individuals andnon-supporters, it can significantly decrease your chances of raisingyour “game” to be able to compete with others for the top positions.
Too many times I’ve heard professionals blames someone else for their lack of promotion, or even lack of motivation. However, our investmentof time, energy, and money is always a choice. Learn who wields powerin your organization and establish yourself as a go-to expert for them, someone who can get them and the company the results they are lookingfor. Prioritize your day to get the most critical things accomplishedin an efficient amount of time and you will be seen as asolution-driver.
Understand that no matter what level you have achieved, there is always someone else right at your heels. As a leader, and particularlyas a woman of color, it’s important to know that you will face adversityand you will always be challenged to be more excellent with every taskyou take on. As long as you know this, and you learn to expectcompetition, you will be mentally prepared to watch for opportunities toexcel above the norm.
You can do tasks all day long, but unless you drive results no activities really matter. Consider what your daily activities are, whichof them add the most value to your company’s bottom-line, and whattasks need to be eliminated. Decide on the outcome you want and orderyour day to get there.
It is the one thing that is constant and everyone knows it’s coming – change. When you can look change in the eye and say, “I see you. Whatlessons do you have for me today?”, you open your mind to opportunitiesinstead of setbacks – jewels instead of blocks. Learn to notice thesigns of change coming and be prepared with your mental “emergency kit”so that you can swerve to a different path at a moment’s notice. Alwayskeep your resume current and build on your personal brand daily. Don’twait until it’s too late to design a consistent, powerful career brandthat will carry you to the next position or opportunity.
