You Owe It to Your Business to Enter!

In late 2002, I received a phone call from someone saying they wanted to nominate me as one of the US Small Business Administration's Home-Based Business Advocate of the Year. I had only been leading the Indie Beauty Network for two years at the time, and I wondered why anyone would consider me a worthy candidate for an award. I answered her questions and submitted a package of information by the deadline. A few months later, I was walking (really, waddling since I was several months pregnant at the time) across a stage accepting the award for the SBA Washington, DC office Home-Based Business Advocate of the Year.

Through that experience, I learned that, no matter how unqualified you think you may be for an award or honor, you have nothing to lose by applying for it anyway and putting your best foot forward. In fact, one could say you owe it to your business to give it your best shot. And like they say, there's no time like the present, right?

So, here's your chance. StartupNation is now accepting nominations for their annual Home-Based 100 Competition. Why don't you enter??! There are 10 categories:

You must submit nominations and votes by midnight on September 30. I know tons of great Indie Business owners out there working from home, and so many of you qualify to win this competition. So why not enter today??!

And if you've already entered, please let us know in the comment section below so we can check out your entry and perhaps vote for you!

Where is SistaSense?

I just posted 'Make Your Market', one of my first posts in a while. It’s actually been quite a few weeks since I've written any blog posts online. I had to take a much needed time out from the SistaSense blog because I’ve been working on some exciting new projects. I am in the final stages of my best web designs to date for a client, Sweet Plum™ collections, an afro-positive line of apparel, jewelry and home décor products featuring cute animated characters of African American Children. This is one of my last web projects for a while, my plate is just way too full! I just completed several e-book projects: Internet Marketing The Big 5, Black Women Online, The Web Entrepreneurs Back Pack, The Guide to Making Money Online, and Work and Web Women. You can now view all my web entrepreneur secrets all in one place. I also am in the middle of designing the Work and Web Women website along with the Black Women Network Site. My Niche is women entrepreneurs, particularly those of color, so I am always working on these sites. I had a GREAT time co-hosting Black Business Women Online’s first teleconference, ‘Make Those Millions with Richelle Shaw. The listener’s loved this one, it was power packed full of great business advice from multi-million dollar mompreneur Richelle Shaw. You can actually listen to it again on the BBWO Network, I will be posting the audio this week. I’ve been sharing a few mocha mom stories and black love advice on my social network the Black Moms Club which now has over 1500 members. My social network for professional black women is close to 4,000 members, and I am happy to see how much both spaces have grown. I am finally getting into the business coaching world. With eight years of web experience I have alot of web tips to share. I just launched the Web Newbie Know How Network for entrepreneurs interested in improving their web skills and I have a new coaching course with Richelle Shaw to be announced shortly. I am still burning the midnight oil working on banner design projects. I am always available to create custom web banners. I’ve been adding new black businesses to the Black Girl Click Ad Network, which is steadily growing and gaining more exposure for black businesses online. I’ve been trying to get more twitter-licous as twittering is a must in today’s web 2.0 world! I’ve been doing more interviews, like the one I did about building a web business for Sister Speak Magazine. And at the end of the day I’ve been trying to pry myself away from this crazy computer so that I can spend more time with my hubby, my mom, and my son who is going to be 2 in November! *Sigh* This web lady has been very busy, but hopefully I will always be right here. Jewelry Feature of the Week: Tiered Colors

Inspired by my chunky beaded rings I figured why not design chunky beaded necklaces. This sterling silver necklace suspends three strands of colorful and uniquely shaped beads. The beaded pendant extends about 1 ½ inches long. This piece is definitely a way to express “color” in your fall fashion. The Fit Indie

Fitness Is Changing My Life and My Business

In late June, I started a healthy lifestyle program. I have to admit that it really wasn't much of a program. More of a more serious desire to be a Fit Indie. At the beginning, I took a sort of relaxed approach to things. I worked out when I could, changed my eating habits a little (but not nearly enough) and began to generally be more conscious about how I was treating my body. Then, in August, my neighbor, friend and sometime walking partner underwent gastric bypass surgery. The next day, she told me she felt like she had been run over by a truck. Sometimes I felt that way and I hadn't even had surgery. And that's not good.

Zumba_20080915

Watching my neighbor go through the gastric thing kicked me into more of a high gear. I didn't want to ever have to go that route. Not that there's anything wrong with it -- I support my friend as she finds her own path to wellness. We have the same general goals, but I felt that surgery was not for me. So earlier this month, I stepped it up. I have lost 6 pounds so far this month.

And I am starting to notice a funny thing on the way to the scale. I am becoming more energized and productive in my career. I have a built-in support system in the 700+ members of the Indie Beauty Network, and that's a plus. Everyone should be so lucky. And things are starting to change for the better.

Candace Sweeney

Last week's newsletter featured IBN member Candace Sweeney in my first Fit Indie Feature. As you can see, Candace has a compelling Fit Indie story. She inspires me and encourages me to continue my path toward fitness. If you are a Fit Indie and would like to be featured in the newsletter or on Indie Business Radio, send an email to me at donnamaria @ indiebeauty.com.

Anne-Marie Faiola

Another great inspiration is IBN member Anne-Marie Faiola of Brambleberry. Anne-Marie tells me that she works out at least 5 times a week, doing a combination of different things like hiking, yoga, Pilates and running. She says she "eats clean," except for the care and feeding of a little cupcake addiction.

Kelly Bloom

Another IBN member, Kelly Bloom at Southern Soapers, hosts a Yahoo group where, in addition to lively discussion about the supplies Kelly sells, members have a periodic weigh in. The "Lose to Win" program started because one of the group members underwent gastric bypass surgery. Kelly tells me that, so far, the group has collectively lost 200 pounds.

Kayla Fioravanti

Kayla Fioravanti of Essential Wholesale lost 60 pounds a few years ago and she's kept it off by exercising. She looks great. She tells me that she started off cutting back on her eating and, after a few months, realized she needed to incorporate exercise. Her husband took over some of the morning childcare responsibilities so Kayla could swim before heading to the office. Kayla told me that it was difficult at first, not only to get into shape, but also, to resist the urge to work when she should fit in the exercise.

At the end of the day, we all have that issue don't we? We love what we do, and there's so much to be done and we Indies either do it all or do so much of it that there's little time for us. It's hard to take the time to care for ourselves as we should. But we can and we should and Candace, Anne-Marie, Kelly and Kayla are good examples of that.

Do my Indies rock or what!!?

So, here I am. Working out gives me more energy and affirms my individual power as a woman. Spinning works my legs and core. Zumba works everything and is a fun way to connect with women of all fitness levels who just like moving their curves. Step aerobics incorporates fun dance steps around a step. The activity actually makes me feel somewhat coordinated.

At the end of each class, I've been snapping photos of myself with my fitness instructors to document my progress, hold myself accountable and make it even more fun. I post the pictures to my Twitter page so everyone can enjoy the ride with me. The fun part is easy, especially for Jatrine's zumba class (see photo above) because she is awesome and also because Tay, who takes Jatrine's class regularly, often shows up in costume. Today she was an eggplant.

Can you beat that? Dancing with a bunch of screaming women while one of them runs around encouraging you dressed as an eggplant. Who could afford to miss that? If you're in the Charlotte area, you owe it to yourself to find out where Jatrine is teaching a zumba class and go and sign yourself up. Jatrine maintains a website and a Facebook page so you can easily find her. One zumba class with Jatrine and you'll have to reapply your hips! It's a good thing. You'll be hooked and you'll feel feminine and powerful at the same time. Tell Jatrine that Donna Maria, the crazy woman who chases down fitness instructors with her camera, sent you.

So listen, this is fun. But it's not easy. I have a long way to go but that's OK. Just like in business, we all have to start somewhere. I always advise my clients to focus on their goals and never rest until they are achieved. I've never had a problem doing that in business. Now it's time to do it where my health is concerned too.

What about you?

Maybe you'd like to join me. Do you have some fitness goals you are trying to reach? Leave your comment below and let's see how we can work to encourage and inspire one another to reach our goals.

Drink GoChi For Mental Acuity!

Increased Mental Sharpness Reported in Clinical Study
Do you think you have a problem making decisions? Well, you may not know it, but you actually make tens of thousands of decisions daily, and each one, even the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other, relies upon the awesome computing power of the human brain. Like all supercomputers, the brain is powered by electrical energy. Instead of batteries and wires, however, your mind is equipped with complex circuits of neurons (brain cells), neurochemicals (electrical conductors), and nerves (pathways). When they’re working together in harmony, you feel mentally sharp. Unfortunately, many factors can decrease the optimum functioning of the brain’s complex circuitry. These include:High homocysteine levels – An amino acid found in the blood of people with cardiovascular disease, homocysteine kills brain and nerve cells.Hypertension – Blood vessels are damaged in the brain, reducing its supply of nutrients and oxygen and disrupting nerve circuits that control decision-making, memory, and verbal skills.Diabetes – Too much insulin encourages inflammation and oxidative stress. Both contribute to cognitive loss.Free-radical damage – This damage contributes to the premature aging and death of brain cells. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is widely regarded as the body’s most toxic free radical, and it is the one that is most often implicated in loss of brain and nervous system function. What can you do to protect your cherished memories and your brain’s computing power? Here are some tips to sharpen your mental abilities:1. Exercise your mind. Keeping your brain active is important for retaining full mind power. Reading books, listening to the radio, or doing puzzles are great calisthenics for the brain.2. Be socially engaged. Having lots of friends and acquaintances and participating in many social activities is associated with reduced cognitive decline and decreased risk of dementia in older adults. In the NIA-funded Chicago Health and Aging Project, a high level of social engagement was associated with a significant reduction in cognitive decline.3. Get your health issues under control, especially if you have diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure. Discuss a wellness plan with your doctor, and your brain will thank you.4. Be physically active. Aerobic exercise, even walking, supplies brain cells with blood, oxygen, and nutrients, and clears toxins. One 8-year study on 6000 women 65 years and older found that those who were more physically active experienced far less cognitive decline.5. Drink 4 ounces (120 ml) of GoChi™ every day!GoChi – Sharper Mental Acuity And Reduced Free-Radical Damage Reported in Human Clinical StudiesIn a recent human clinical trial reported in the peer-reviewed Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (JACM), participants drinking a daily serving of just 4 ounces (120 ml) of GoChi reported experiencing significant improvement in mental sharpness in as little as 14 days. In yet another controlled human study, GoChi was found to significantly reduce free-radical damage by malondialdehyde (MDA) in just 30 days! These groundbreaking clinical studies demonstrate FreeLife’s ongoing commitment to supporting its claims with solid scientific research.Be sharp!REFERENCES:*National Institute on Aging Website http://www.nia.nih.gov**Amagase H, Nance DM. A Healing Touch

A Healing TouchSome little girls are calledTo love mothers who are ill. They tiptoe in, to share their love,And whisper to be still. With a gentleness andWisdom far beyond their years,They come (as ministering angels)To kiss away our tears.Tenderly, we hear their loving heartsWith every smile, so sweet,And, as we feel that love,We hear God gently speak."I am here to walk with youThrough the darkest storm.Though, at times, you feel all alone; With your strength long gone.I am here to carry youThrough the stormy night. You may feel so weak, unable to go on.But, I am here, arms holding you.Your effort cannot keep you strong.I am coming, in your deepest pain,To whisper, "Trust Me. Now, you can. For, I am here and I knowYour heart is crying in the rain. One day soon, you will not fear.In your darkness, I will restore.I am here to replace all that is not.Light will come to you once more. For, I am the OneWho can see you through. In lonely nights, longing to seeThe sun, I will come to carry you.Do not fear for your family.I am able to fill in every gap.I can meet their daily need.It is not for you to fret.I understand how you wishYou could give them more. But, I am making sure they will knowMy everlasting love the more.Soft Whispers fromStay FocusedandBlessed.........................Jan

Tell it

Tell ItRev. James C. Matthews"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." Revelations 12:11, KJVI discovered something while a student in law school that shed light on why so many people are bound by situations they should be set free from. During an Evidence class, we came to the topic of "Testimony". In summary, I discovered that testimony serves the purpose of proving the truthfulness of a matter by the confirmation of another who has (preferably) first hand knowledge of the events. This person is called a "witness". This individual only qualifies as a witness if they have "first hand knowledge or experience" of the matter. The most powerful testimony a witness can possess is "eye witness" testimony. The testimony of a witness who lacks this first hand knowledge is categorized as "hearsay". Hearsay has very little probative value and is often excluded from being accepted into evidence. Oftentimes, the freedom and very life of the one being tried, depends on eyewitnesses that are willing to testify concerning what they know.As I read Revelation 12:11, I thought about what I learned in law school. It occurred to me that many people are unnecessarily bound and perishing in their trials because the enemy has shamed the witnesses from coming forward and testifying about their our own experiences and what they know. The enemy knows that our testimony has the power to defeat him and set the accused free. Many people are serving life sentences in bondage, condemnation, and some even losing their lives, because they’ve lost all hope of things getting better or them surviving what they’re going through. However, we are living testimonies or evidence that you can make it. The enemy tried to destroy our bodies, minds/souls and spirits - but failed. Our testimony proves that the devil is a liar and defeated.Testimony, by its very nature, is not for the one testifying but for the benefit of the one being tried. I don’t care how shameful your past may have been; someone else needs the deliverance that is in your mouth. There is a ministry in your testimony that cannot be denied or refuted. Proverbs 18:21 declares, that the "power of life and death is in the tongue".It is interesting to note that the root word for "testimony" in the Greek is "martus". It is the same word from which we get the word "martyr". A martyr is someone who died for what they believe and know to be true. I mentioned earlier, that "hearsay" testimony is generally not accepted as evidence. However, there are exceptions to this rule. One such exception concerns the "words of a dying or dead person". These words are considered unusually reliable because a dying or dead person has nothing to lose by telling the truth. They are no longer subject to fear, intimidation or the power of those who have an interest in the outcome of a matter. They’re free to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help them God!As born again, blood washed, forgiven Believers, we too are dead to the guilt and shame of our past that others cast upon us. It is all under the blood, buried in the watery grave of baptism and crucified with our old man. When and if we fall short, we can pray for forgiveness and God forgives us, never to be brought to our charge again. With this being the case, let me ask you a question: What are you afraid of? What’s keeping you from testifying to others of what God has brought you out of and delivered you from? Others are struggling with the same thing you’ve been delivered from and need to know the truth - that God is a deliverer! The text says, "they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony." Jesus has done His part in perfectly defeating the enemy. He shed His blood and rose from the grave. Now we must do ours by tell our testimony! Every time you tell it, it reminds the devil he’s defeated! Go ahead, don’t be afraid or ashamed - "tell it!"Stay FocusedandBlessed.........................Jan

She is the principal of EDC Creations and The Sankofa Literary Society which is located in Prince George County, Maryland and viewed by many as the Empress of Internet Book Promotions. Who am I talking about? Mrs. Ella D. Curry! Small and medium-sized businesses, authors of all literary genres, and individuals rely on EDC Creations (www.edc-creations.com) -- a firm that provides press kits, graphic design, website design, and branding. EDC Creations’ specialization in Internet book promotions, publishing website and marketing materials for new authors is changing the face of publishing. Curry’s Sankofa Literary Society (http://sankofaliterary society.org) offers authors, artists, reviewers, journalists and book clubs an array of innovative services. Through an Internet radio talk show -- Black Authors Network Radio -- (http://www.edc-creations.com/banradio.html), Curry introduces authors, publishers and community leaders to the global village. Mrs. Curry has been hired as the house publicist for Xpress Yourself Publishing as well as a columnist for Black Men in America. Her promotions can be found globally as well as her media broadcasts. As the new Assistant Organizer for the mulit-faceted Black Writers Guild Of America’s Washington, D.C. Chapter (BWGA), Curry plans to combine her business contacts and literary connections, with the member’s activities which will result in members of the BWGA coming in contact and networking with some of today's best-selling authors. Curry’s goal is to take the group to the next level by providing quality entertainment, while educating the writers, poets, and authors. And as the Marketing Director for A Good Book, a bookstore located in Baltimore, Maryland, Ella seeks to provide authors with a diverse selection of programs to showcase their talents and assisting them in transforming their dream of being published into a realityDuring the waning days of summer, I had an opportunity to chat with Mrs. Ella Curry – the Empress Of Internet Book Promotion about where she grew up, her role models, what inspires her, the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship, and her future.Where did Mrs. Curry grow up? Where was she educated?“I grew up in the South, the Deep South. My childhood was spent racing up and down a cool tree covered holler, playing with my many cousins,” recalls Mrs. Curry. “Diana Green, my great grandmother, Elizabeth Cook, my grandmother and first mentor, were my very first teachers. There after I continued my formal education at CACC Community College, University of Alabama, Birmingham, and later at the University of Maryland, University College. The lessons that I use daily in life did not come from my college education. They all come from my interaction with the PEOPLE God sent to guide and educate me. My angels come from all walks of life and bring about a myriad of curriculums for Ella Curry. My education continues daily as I meet people who share information or history I didn’t possess. My grandparents instilled in me values and standards that no degree could ever outshine. With the simple basics in understanding ‘the golden rule’, I have grown so much more than a few letters behind my name. Common sense, a feeling of purpose and genuine compassion for your brothers and sisters can bring so much more success in life.”I asked Mrs. Curry to talk about the role models she had as she made the journey from childhood to adulthood.“Mary Glass was my high school librarian and one of my role models. Mrs. Glass instilled in me the art of being a lady. Mrs. Glass was a chocolate, petite, Delta Diva -- very refined in every sense of the word. All my life I wanted to be like her and to make her proud of my accomplishments. She was the first person to discuss college with me, vacationing, acquiring the finer things in life and the first adult to show me what that Black people could do more than work at a factory! Because of Mary Glass, I graduated in the top ten percent of my senior class and went on to become the business owner you are meeting today. Mrs. Glass died of breast cancer two months after my graduation, but she lives on in my daily walk. She whispers in my ear daily to calm down! I can hear her clearly quoting her favorite phrase to me, ‘I choose to walk the path least taken, knowing that God is with me’.”So, who or what inspires her?“My mother who has survived, against all odds, when the doctors gave up on her life. My father who became a successful man in the South, when no one believed a Black man could own acreage and have a sizeable bank account. My best friend Samuel Barclay who has given me the sense of pride, praise and advice so many women lack in life. Samuel became my lover, best friend, later companion and now he acts as the father my child so needs to grow up with a healthy family support team. I am most inspired by people who dare to dream. Often times our plans may not come to fruition or they may not work out just like we planned. But I respect the effort to live out your dreams. Every success has to come from a dream, later a plan and ultimately from believing in yourself. At EDC Creations we take a person dreams and concepts and turn them into reality!”Noting that Mrs. Curry is the owner of EDC Creations and the Sankofa Literary Society and the producer and moderator of an Internet radio talk show, The Black Authors Network, which showcases authors, publishers and community leaders to the global village, I was curious as to what motivated her to become an entrepreneur.“My motivation to become an entrepreneur came from my mother. My mother is a retired nurse now, but most of her life she operated successful sideline businesses. She later became the most affluent Black woman in our town. Her drive to receive a higher education, raise three children alone, and to work two jobs gave me the same sense of determination and perseverance. For the first 20 years of my adult life, I worked in mills as quality control managers and training instructors. After all the factories moved to Mexico, I was forced to turn my events planning hobby into a real business. My lifetime of hosting elegant parties became my new career. Those house parties became corporate and political events and they opened doors that took me from the assembly lines to the boardrooms of some of today’s most successful companies. With the help of my sister, who is a corporate executive, my dreams were becoming a reality and EDC Creations began.”At what point did Curry decide to focus on authors and in the process become a liaison between authors, the publishing world, and the book-buying public?“Often times launching your own business is difficult and the expense that comes with owning your business can be overwhelming. In an effort to increase my income and to acquire health insurance, I went to work at Karibu Bookstores in Maryland as a buyer’s assistant. This opened my eyes to a world I never knew! The Black History that I ‘thought’ I knew became a farce. Karibu exposed me to the classics, --our classics. The bookstore enveloped me. Always an avid reader, I became obsessed with catching up with what our people were doing and all the achievements that had been denied to me during a Southern education, in a predominately white school. I quickly went from being just an assistant to the New Submissions Manager, Sideline Buyer, Events Buyer and consultant to the Marketing Department as well as to the Human Resources Department. Carolyn Reed was the Director of Human Resources for Karibu. We met for lunch one day and she was so impressed with my desire to learn, that she hired me on the spot. After working briefly in the store, I was offered a position as the head Buyers’ Assistant. My immediate manager name was Sunny Sana, a very socially conscious, proud artist, with world renowned musical appreciation. Sunny gave me an understanding of being part of a global family -- not just an African American family. She introduced me to the arts! Lee McDonald, the Marketing Director encouraged me daily to step out on faith and take EDC Creations to new heights. Lee was pivotal in turning my events planning company into a design company catering to authors. Lee passed my work on to authors, she allowed me to design material for Karibu’s six bookstores and as they say the rest is history. Simba Sana, the co-owner, of Karibu bookstores instilled in me the value of ‘having your own’ and being there to bring others who seek to have ‘their own’ up with you. Simba Sana and Yao Glover both instructed me on the philosophy behind Karibu. Karibu was more than a book store -- it was a mindset. Both owners fully believed in the spirit of Sankofa, you have to know where you came from, in order to know where you are going. This motivation, direction and constant support lead me to reach out to new authors and direct their paths in a more business savvy manner.”I asked Mrs. Curry to talk about what, in her view, are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of entrepreneurship?“The most challenging part of being an entrepreneur is staying up to date on the technology that’s growing by leaps and bounds. As an Internet publicist, my career depends on bringing my clients the next great Web 2.0 promotional tool. The most rewarding part of my career is to see an author become published, get their books in the major chains and to enlighten the world with their message. Just to help bring a client’s dream to reality is so pleasing. Meeting some of the most profound literary icons is also fabulous! Recently I was granted a 20 minute interview with Dr. Maya Angelou, which was the most defining moment of my business life.”I was curious about the type of books Mrs. Curry reads. Who are her favorite authors? My selection of books and reading taste is so eclectic! I will leap from reading a Christian Fiction title to a mystery, then move on to the hottest Erotica written. Since, I am a publicist, I don’t purchase many books. Whenever I do go out and purchase a book, it is usually an audio book that deals with improving your life or business in some way. My all time favorite book is Squashing Grasshoppers by D. Bernard Wright. At the moment I am reading the revised edition of The Georgia Avenue Bus by author Henri Edmonds. Author Henri Edmonds, is my friend, mentor and literary godmother. She is there for me through thick and thin. Her counseling sessions, as a professor of Theater at Howard University, are essential in helping me to learn the ropes in the business world.”Initially, Curry’s Internet radio talk show focused on authors and their books. She has expanded her Internet radio talk show to showcase community leaders and explore a myriad of social issues. Why?My guests brought about this change. The more conversations we had on the radio show, the more the need to take this information back to the streets and communities became apparent. The authors and community leaders all knew what our issues in society were -- what we all needed were resolutions! We needed others who were out there working in the trenches, to come in and tell us what to do next. I have had the pleasure of bringing some of the most intelligent people in the United States on the show! This gives people HOPE to know that there are others out there trying to bring about a change.Talk to us about the Gift of Knowledge Campaign. What is it about? What is its mission?“EDC Creations, The Sankofa Literary Society and The Black Authors Network ïs announcing the launch of their 2009 Give the Gift of Knowledge Campaign’ which is bringing readers and authors together to help improve literacy. In 2004, during the Christmas holidays, in my capacity as the Founder of EDC Creations, reached out to women's groups and literary organizations to help promote early literacy by giving new books to children from low income homes. Today, the ‘Give the Gift of Knowledge Campaign,’ seeks to expand even further! Based on the “each one teach one,” model, our goal is to help people introduce reading and new books to their family and friends,” Mrs. Curry, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of EDC Creations explained. “Instead of giving expensive gifts that don't shape lives----let's ‘Give the Gift of Knowledge’ and help to strengthen our future generations! Each year thousands of people — educators, concerned parents, community leaders, authors, poets and publishers — devote their time and resources to presenting the reader with great books! However, too many outstanding books do not get the attention and reader support that they deserve. It is our mission to connect readers with these hidden gems and bring them books that will change their lives. Each week EDC Creations will sponsor bookclub chats, live readings from authors, podcast presentations, seminars, community relations discussions, and radio shows that deliver the best our writers have to offer. Live Without Failing

Live Without FailingDr. Frederick K.C. PriceSecond Peter 1:5 - 105 ...giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do thee things you will never stumble; That word stumble in the traditional King James says fall and it literally means to fall down or fail. Now He said you will never stumble, never fall. That word never literally means by no means ever. It also carries the idea by no means, not even at any time. God says that if you will do these things you will never fail, never fall, never stumble, never. That's incredible. Our subject is fail proof living. Living without failing. Failure in any area of life, whether in the natural realm or the spiritual realm has to be a permitted response. In other words it just can't happen. There has to be permission given by you to do so. If this were not possible, God would never have told us.Look at what God tells us to do. These are our responsibilities. He says, in verse 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith... Now we start out with faith as reborn children of God. But then He says add to your faith. That's our responsibility. Add to it. Add what to it? Add virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. He said if we do these things you will never, never fail.I want to talk to you about self-control, because if we are going to be a good testimony for God's glory, we are going to have to practice self-control. Obviously by the term self-control if you turn that around that is saying, in essence, control self. Unfortunately, there are multitudes of spirit-filled, tongue talking. Bible-toting, faith-believing Christians that are out of control. It is obvious just simply by observation.Colossians 3:11 If [This word connotes-qualifier, condition. There is a condition here.] then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.2 Set your mind [in the traditional King James it says affection -the real word in the Greek is "mind."] on things above,...Now I have a question. Don't you agree that God Almighty would be extremely unkind to require something of us that He would very well know we were incapable of doing? Therefore, if He tells me to do something I can do it.And if I don't do it that means that I am in gross violation of the will of my Father.1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.2 Set your mind on things above, not things on the earth.3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.5 Therefore put to death [Kill it. Here is one of the very few places in the Bible where God authorizes killing in reference to self-not someone else.] your members [A member is your hand, fingers, mouth and etc.] Therefore put to death your members which are on earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. He said put is to death, kill it. Paul said, "I keep under my body, I keep it under control." That's what it means to put it to death. Don't let it tell you what to do and don't let it control or direct you because it will if you let it. I have to do that all the time in every area of life because there are times right here at the church, I want to knock somebody out. I want to go home and get my .44 magnum and come back and scintillate their heads. That's how I feel. Some of the crap that some of the people here do-working for the church-taking money out of the ministry. I want to blow their brains out and splatter them all over the floor. That's how I feel, but I have to control myself.5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion,...[See fornication is not a member. Pick up on that. He says put to death, but it takes physical organs to commit fornication. All He is saying to act like those members are dead.]If were to go back to what they did back in the 18th Century and hook up all these young women with chastity belts we wouldn't have any problems about entering in. There would be no unwed mothers because the lock box is on there. If we would take a machete and line up all the men and go by and [chop, chop] we wouldn't have any problems. But that is what He is saying. That's what you have to do if you want to stay under control. You have got to act like it's gone. I can't get in trouble if it's dead.Stay FocusedandBlessed.........................Jan

What Precious Gift

What Precious GiftWhen God chose, of His beloved Son,To be lifted there on high,What was the gift He gaveAs He suffered there to die?Did He open up the doorTo let the light within my soul?Did He take away the darknessSo I could be made whole?Did He replace all of my emptinessAnd fill me with His love?Did He bless my heart with His peaceBy coming from above?Does my life now have a purposeTo wake upon each day?Shall I rest on every promiseAs He shows me of His way? Will He bubble up within meLike a living flowing spring,To bring me joy and laughterAnd every good between? Is the power in the blood of JesusMoving me on to be,Not what I was just yesterday,His death to set me free?Oh, lift me, precious Jesus,Into Your sufficiency. For, You gave Your life to fill meWith Yourself, eternally.Soft Whispers fromDerry's Heart PoemsStay FocusedandBlessed.........................Jan

How about a poem that lifted your spirits? Was there a quote that may have changed your life? If so, why not share it? Here's one of the most inspiring quotes I've run across:Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."~Coach Cartersubmit to: inspirationalsubmissions@fabulousblackwoman.comAre You Spotlight Worthy?FBW is looking for FBW's to spotlight. Faith

FaithJesus knew that we'd have trouble,With grief churning in our mind. But, He has given us His faith,So heavenly thoughts we'll find.We take captive every thoughtTo make it obedient unto Him.We demolish all that rises upAgainst God. For, it is sin.We put on the new self,Created in true righteousness. We grasp the depth of His grace for usAs reality in consciousness. We get rid of all our bitterness,Anger, and all maliceTo be kind, compassionate, and forgiving;Fit, then, for His palace. We rely on the love of God.For, this, alone, drives out fear. His perfect love is complete in us.No punishment is near.We (rejoice in the Lord, always),With gratitude, lay all beneath His feet.Choosing to think lovely and pureWill make our peace complete.Soft Whispers fromDerry's Heart PoemsStay FocusedandBlessed.........................Jan
