My life's work focuses on Indie Business success. But unlike many other small business experts, I focus on creating life and financial contentment rather than on making millions or getting rich. That's why I'm so excited to be traveling to San Francisco (one of my favorite cities) in September to join Lori Nova and other Indies for Lori's Business Boot Camp.

Dm_and_lori_nova

Lori calls this Boot Camp "The Mother of all Business Seminars". I caught up with her to find out more about what she's planning and what sets this Business Boot Camp apart.

dM: What makes this Business Boot Camp special?

Lori: It's a groundbreaking four-day business seminar for people who want to make up the difference between making money and making a profit.

dM: Why is it necessary?

Lori: Because so many people are making money, but so few are making a profit.

Everyone who comes to The Nova Studio is looking for a creative outlet. They come to learn to make soap, candles, bath and body products, perfume and more. Many of them are tired of their non-creative corporate jobs. They want to do something that's meaningful to them - something they are passionate about. The event was designed for those people.

It's for creative people and by creative people -- yet it transcends creativity to help people make the journey from creativity to profit.

This Boot Camp will deliver the goods so people have the tools to make enough money to support an individual or a family, plus have the time they want and need to enjoy the other important things in life.

dM: Who are the speakers?

Lori: Seven experts and veterans in the bath and body products field, many traveling from the east coast, will share their experiences and insight to help budding business owners succeed.

In addition to dM, organizing expert Elizabeth Hagen will be speaking, plus Indie Beauty Network member, author and soap pioneer Kaila Westerman will be on hand. All the speakers:

dM of the Indie Beauty Network
Kaila Westerman of TKB Trading
Jane Doikas of Jane, Inc.
David Critchfield of Mission Peak Soap
Alexis Masters of Design by Alexis
Scott Blackson of the Soap Fairy (enjoy a cool post about Scott)
Elizabeth Hagen of Organizing With Confidence

I'll also host a wrap party on the final day of the event, which will be a great way to solidify connections made during the event.

You can see the full speaker roster and seminar descriptions here.

dM: Why is this event necessary?

Lori: Because people know how to make money, but not how to make a profit. There's so much hoopla these days about getting rich and making millions that middle class entrepreneurs get lost. We are changing that by encouraging a fair and reasonable profit without making it seem like unless it's millions, it doesn't count.

This Business Boot Camp is also important because there is a big difference between making money and owning and managing a business. I've seen many small businesses start with amazing products and all the passion and enthusiasm in the world, and then close within the first or second year of business because they never make the connection between making money and making a profit.

Business requires more than passion and a few good recipes. It requires a plan. It requires a solid understanding of basic business concepts. This Business Boot Camp will provide that, because the speakers have been there, done that.

The speakers have sustained successful businesses for around a decade or more, so they know what it takes. They've persevered in booming economies and in down ones, and they are willing to share their secrets so others can achieve as well.

dM: Have you noticed an increase in people wanting to start businesses?

Lori: Oh yes! People tell me all the time, "I'm just not creative enough to have a good product," or "I just don't have what it takes." But after taking a class and seeing what they are capable of, they gain the confidence to try new things, and business ownership is a logical new thing to consider.

But what next? That's where this Business Boot Camp comes in.

This is my story! The Nova Studio was born out of my love for making things. How could I not host this Boot Camp??!

It gives me great personal satisfaction to know that, as I follow my passion, I am also helping other people follow theirs.

Space is limited and the early bird registration expires soon, so be sure to register while there's still time!

Kiva Entrepreneur Update

As a wife, mother and entrepreneur, I have a heart for women who are simultaneously managing home and business. While kudos go out to all Indies, wives who are also mothers, home managers, chauffeurs, short order cooks, interior decorators, boo-boo kissers and life partners get special stars in my book.

Shahodat

So for several months, I have provided financial support to Shahodat Ismoilova in Khujland, the poorest country in the former Soviet Union, located in central Asia. Shahodat, who is married with 4 children, sells perfumes and other household products in an open-air market.

Like me, Shahodat runs her business with her husband. He travels twice a week to bring wholesale goods from another city while Shahodat manages the market shop daily. So far, Shahodat and her husband have repaid 65% of their $1,200 loan. The couple uses the money mainly to reach out to suppliers in an effort to expand inventory.

I am honored to be a tiny part of the Ismoilovas' efforts to provide for themselves and their children in a country that is only 10 years removed from a terrible civil war.

You can support another entrepreneur by investing as little as $25 at Kiva.

Prayer for Confidence

Prayer for ConfidenceI know that God is the one and only source of my being.Spirit Itself created me. Life Itself lives through me.Love Itself sustains me.I am an important and connected part of this spiritual universe. If God loves me enough to create me, offer His Son to give me life, then I can love and respect myself no less. Therefore, I no longer believe in unworthiness, limitation, and shame.I no longer believe that I am undeserving of the best life has to offer.I deserve and accept all the good things in life, for myself and everyone else in my world.I ACCEPT my own beauty, and I see it reflected in the world around me.I ACCEPT my own power, and I use it wisely.I ACCEPT my own worth, and I live abundantly.I ACCEPT my own love, and I share it freely.I ACCEPT my own potential, and I live it fully. My past, my false beliefs, and my feeling of unworthiness no longer limit me.I accept full responsibility for my life, my thoughts, my feelings, and my actions.I may not always like what I do or how I feel, but I choose always to love myself in the meantime.Never again will I judge myself as undeserving.Growing and evolving feels good. Accepting responsibility feels good.Giving myself permission to become the person I was meant to be feels good. And I deserve to feel good about myself and my life. And so it is.

Save Our Children - Founder Janice Lowery

Help Support Save Our Children in bringing even more awareness to our children and the community in which they live.. The following message, posted by the founder of Save Our Children - Janice Lowery

The last time Mya Lyons' family saw her alive, she was dressed head to toe in pink. Pink shoes, pink pants, pink T-shirt.It was her favorite color—one that also is featured prominently in her bedroom filled with Dora the Explorer dolls, Barbies and an extensive Bratz collection. The 9-year-old had gone to bed about 11 p.m. Monday after telling her grandmother she was tired and wanted to sleep. About 10 minutes later, the family heard a door shut. The noise drew the girl's father downstairs to investigate, relatives said. After quickly discovering Mya wasn't in the house, relatives went outside to search for her. About 15 minutes later, Richard Lyons Sr. found his daughter wounded in a secluded alley near their home. His anguished screams awoke the quiet South Side street where the family has lived for more than two decades.A father's plea Video "No! No! No!" neighbors heard Richard Lyons bellow. "Not my baby! Not my baby!"***********************************************************************************A neighbor last saw Mya sitting alone on her front porch about 10 p.m. Monday. The girl had spent most of the sunny day outside playing with neighborhood kids.Mya's parents both say the little girl, who had just finished the 3rd grade, would never have left the house without telling someone."Mya would've never went somewhere at 11-something at night in the dark, never," her mother said. "Mya wouldn't do that. That's my baby. I know she would never do that."In the Addison apartment complex where Mya and her mother lived, she was known as a smart, kind and sweet child who loved to create dances, practice cheers and play dolls with her best friend, Arianna McCastle, who lived upstairs. It is important to protect your children at all times. Please pray for this family. You Protecting Your ChildrenPEAS IN THEIR PODSDate / Time: 7/16/2008 7:00 PMCall-in Number: (646) 595-4664http://www.blogtalkradio.com/PEASINTHEIRPODSOur guest is Autumn McCain, staff member for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Las Vegas Shows

Even though the number of huge Las Vegas shows has increased dramatically over the last decade or so, they haven’t gotten any cheaper or easier to get into. This is something you should begin researching when you first lock in the dates you’ll be visiting. Some of the more notable shows sell out well in advance, even with ticket prices starting well over $100.If you just want to see a show while you are in Las Vegas, you’ll have no problem finding one to attend while you are in the city, but if you want to see a specific show you’ve got to be on the ball. Broadway-style hits like Spamalot and Mamma Mia! can be sold out way in advance.Check the shows page on Lasvegas.com for the specific shows that will be playing while you’ll be in town.Production showsMost of the largest theaters in Las Vegas feature large Broadway-style shows with huge casts, lavish costumes, and sometimes even stars in the main roles. Several actual Broadway shows are always in town including Phantom, Mamma Mia!, and Spamalot, but again, the lineup changes periodically so it’s important to check the listings for when you’ll be in town. Prices for the top shows can range from $80 to about $200, and many sell out nearly every show so it’s a good idea to buy tickets in advance over the phone or Internet if you have your heart set on one in particular.Magic showsThere has never been a shortage of magic acts in Las Vegas, but now the town is filled with them. Lance Burton and Penn & Teller are the big names, but many other talented magicians perform regularly in major hotels as well.Tribute showsEver since Beatlemania hit in the 70s, Vegas has been putting on high-quality tribute shows of all kinds. Legends In Concert has been running for a couple decades now, but other tribute shows featuring Neil Diamond, the Rat Pack, and the Beatles are also popular in the medium-sized rooms in Las Vegas.Adult showsA growing number of lavish shows for “adults only” are popular in Las Vegas. The traditional drag shows like Follies Bergere are still around, but now they are joined by Chippendales shows and stripper-based shows so there is something for everyone but the kids in this category.Lounge showsThese aren’t as popular as they once were, but if you walk through a casino or two you are bound to come across a band or singer performing their heart out in front of people who just happened to wander by. These can be campy and cheesy, but the performers are almost all quite talented so this is a good, free, and authentic way to get a bit of Vegas in an old-school way.

MiniMizz ::: You don't HAVE to take the Client

What??? What exactly are you talking about Mizz Rikki? Don't you see the gas prices? Hear the news? I'm trying to get every dollar I can!Is that right? How much stress are you willing to take with that? Here are some (real life) scenarios that may make you think seriously about that.1. From the initial contact, they really don't know what they want, change their mind 50leven times, and continuously ask you questions that you've answered time and time again. You can be sure that no matter what you do for them, they will ask for a do over.2. They want to barter with you, offering items that are not guaranteed to bring you income. I mean, it sounds good, but if you do the basic math...3. When presented with your rates, they tell you they can only afford x amount. Again, when you do the simple math, it works out to be less than the minimum wage. Not only is that disrespectful of a person's skills, IT'S ILLEGAL to pay someone less than the minimum wage.4. They want to pay you as an independent contractor, but treat you as an employee; call you at all hours of the day and night and weekends and holidays and expect you to drop everything you are doing to talk to them.5. You're told that the job entails certain tasks and/or hours, then once you agree it turns out to be way more - but don't want to adjust the pay rate. See #s 3 and 4.6. Don't want to sign the contract you give them; they give you a document that is not a binding agreement; or they give you a contract that totally protects them and asks way too much of you. Those six points are only the tip of the iceberg, and are indicators from the very beginning that scream RUN. I have personally experienced all of those, and most times the offenders were family or friends, but the occasional stranger has tried to get over like that too. The points are also a measure as to how much stress the client will cause you. Another hint? If you have to ask someone's opinion on the situation at hand, and your gut is trying to get your attention, it's probably not going to be a good working relationship.I like to provide solutions when I point out problems, so here's some things you can do to protect your mental and physical health from stress. Yes, you're in business to generate revenue but great customer service should be a goal as well. How can you provide excellent service to someone who grates your nerves?A. Know what goods and services you will provide, and the terms and conditions under which you will provide them. Do not waiver because you feel pressured to make a quick buck.B. Have your most basic terms of business displayed on your website. This should be the standard for all clients to know.C. Have an ideal customer in mind. I've even seen a website or two that spells out who their ideal client is.D. Save the frustration for after you hang up the phone. When their number shows up on your caller ID, take a deep breath and smile big when you pick up - or send the call to voice mail. Keep your cool when talking to that potential client. Save the vent for a trusted friend or colleague (who you don't do business with).E. Be tactful in turning down the potential client. Let them know what you find unreasonable or why you think that doing business with them won't work. Even if you're losing their money, they'll respect you more for being cordial while standing your ground, and eventually will see that you believe in your skills and have standards. If they can't, do you really want to do business with them anyway?I've seen too many instances where someone wants to hire someone else to do something, abuse them by underpaying/overworking and then leaving that provider for someone else who charges more and has clear cut policies and procedures.Don't sell yourself short. If the initial contact doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.Toodles!MizzRikki/MizzEllaneous.com

Ah, I've discovered a new pastime - twittering. I twitter to my tweeps, keeping them updated on the details of my life/business life. Let me tell you, it's some experience. What is Twitter? From Wikipedia:Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts, ranging up to 140 characters long.Who actually uses Twitter? (also from Wikipedia)Enterprise use* Businesses such as Cisco Systems, Whole Foods Market, Dell, Zappos.com, and Comcast use Twitter to provide updates to customers.* The Los Angeles Fire Department put the technology to use during the October 2007 California wildfires.* NASA used Twitter to break the news of discovery of what appeared to be water ice on Mars by the Phoenix Mars Lander.* News outlets such as CNN and the BBC have also started using Twitter to disseminate breaking news or provide information feeds for sporting events.* Several 2008 U.S. presidential campaigns use Twitter as a publicity mechanism, including that of Democratic Party nominee Barack Obama.[9]. The Nader/Gonzalez campaign uses Twitter and Google Maps to show real-time updates of their ballot access teams across the country.* The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering is using Twitter to relay information to students. The point seems to be that Twitter is good for your business. But before you jump on and start Twittering your life away, here are some tips for using Twitter for your biz. (By no means is this a complete list.)5 Tips for Using Twitter for Business1. Use Twitter to announce a new blog post, a new article or a press release2. Brand yourself - Post tips or tidbits of information that will brand you as an expert in your field3. Network - select and follow people that you think might be interested in your product or service or find like minded people with which to collaborate4. Post links to interesting websites, articles or podcasts5. Post time sensitive promotions such as one day sales, or contestsNote: It helps if you respond to other's tweets once in a while. Twitter, is a two-way street - if you are constantly just posting information and not responding to other's postings, that makes it difficult to form "soft" relationships via Twitter. These are just a few ways that I, as a newbie, have used Twitter. I'm sure you can think of a few more!Follow me at www.twitter.com/neosoulsister

Summertime is here and we all want to show it in our very own special way. When I think of summer the first images that come to mind are the sun, beautiful weather and beaches. This necklace reminds me of the summertime with the variations of yellow beads holding up a mother of pearl shattered flower. As a part of the Chic Summer Line, Sunrise Pearl is a necklace that can be worn casually or will make a perfect piece with a semi-formal outfit. From the point of view of lead generation, networking with local business men and women, across industry and target markets, can prove to be time and money well spent, and can help to generate word of mouth referrals and recommendations.Despite its obvious merits, so many small business owners neglect networking and discourage their employees from getting to know other business owners in their area. As a result, they miss out on the opportunities presented by having a wider network of business associates. Just how much difference can networking make to the success, or otherwise, of your business?Networking in business is initially important as regards getting your business known 'out there' within the local community. Business owners talk to other business owners' everyday, on a personal and commercial level, sharing information that can mutually help their businesses and closing deals to the benefit of one another.Furthermore, those business owners each have their own independent network of friends, who have their own individual network of friends, and so the web continues.Networking is a great way of promoting a new startup, and a great source of help and advice when needed. Many first time networking individuals are surprised to find how active their local business community is. There are loads of business owners across all different industries ready and willing to offer a helping hand when and if you face a problem.Likewise, networking in business is important from the point of view of driving sales and boosting revenues. By becoming involved with your local business community you can not only sell products and services to them directly, but also to their friends in other areas through recommendations. For example, as a website designer, your business could grow substantially through networking with business owners from a diversity of industries who may need a website designed themselves, or may know someone else who requires such services. In fact, you would be surprised how tenuous some business links arising from networking can get - friends of friends of friends might also come knocking for your services, simply because you have taken the time and effort to communicate and network with other business owners in your area. There is no doubt networking and business go hand in hand, and is a simple proposition for those that invest in building relationships. They will be subsequently dealt a great deal of work from the wider network and gain more respect and a higher profile within their specific business community.Bear in mind that networking is a two way process; the more you help others the more you will receive. For the little effort required in forming personal relationships, the rewards of networking in business are there for all to see, and it's no wonder major companies spend millions every year on corporate hospitality and getting to know their clients and suppliers.Your business can also engage in networking with others to generate greater awareness of the products or services you have to offer, leading to new sales leads and long-term client relationships.

Why New Businesses Fail

There are many different reasons business fail and much of it is debatable but there are some common mistakes that are detrimental in business failure. Some of the reason many business fail are due to the following reasons:• Overexpansion. Many companies over expand too soon. They look at the books and see 3 months of good sales and profit and think right let’s get more staff. Then another 6 months down the line the profits have not followed suit which leaves you in a difficult situation. You need to stick with realistic goals and allow yourself to grow as needs dictate. And old saying ‘don’t not run before you can walk’ is relevant. You need to look at the statistics and watch for trends. If sales and profits looks good now it’s doesn’t necessarily mean it will look good tomorrow.• Overspending and lack of reserve funds.Overspending can have detrimental affects. You should only spend on what is necessary. Be realistic, just because you have good cash flow at the minute doesn’t mean you will have in the future. Ask yourself is purchasing this item really necessary, will it make a real difference or not. Look at all the costs of the business and if some are not necessary then drop them. Having money in the bank is important to carry you through market downtrends and seasonal slowness. You should always be prepared for fluctuations in business. You should always put money away in boom times to prepare for the slow times.• Poor managementPoor management is one of the main reasons business fail. If you haven’t got happy customers and happy stuff your business is almost curtain to fail. Poor customer service, poor accounting and overall employee incompetence can all combine to collapse a business. You need to ensure your employees realise the importance of good customer service. Establish protocols for how tasks should be accomplished and ensure they are carried out. Many companies these days have a relaxed attitude and don’t place to much importance on carrying out basic good management practice. Having meetings regularly with all staff will help your business run smoothly. If no meetings take place then resentment can set in. Everyone needs to air their opinions and explain how their job could be done more efficiently.• Poorly treated StaffLabour is the biggest expense for most small business so it makes sense to ensure your company employs the right amount of people and treat them correctly. Companies that invest highly in their staff by offering training and advancement will find it easier to keep their staff. Ensure you pay your staff every month on time as not to do so would be breaching your contract with them. Invest in your staff; they are your biggest asset. If they feel they cannot advance in your business they will not stay long. Listening to your staff is important. If employees are leaving you need to be asking why. Treat your staff how you would expect to be treated and you will gain respect from them and get the best of out them.• Poor or no business planHaving a good business plan is your key to success. A well-thought-out business plan forces you to think about the future and the challenges you'll face. As long as your forecasts are realistic and you have done plenty of market research you should be ok. Ensure your plan has a budget and stick to it.• Dishonesty and GreedBeing dishonest will catch up with you eventually. Remember your ethics, try to treat your customers and staff as you would be expected to be treated. Don’t charge the earth for customers just because they look like they can afford it, this is exploitation and will come back and bite you on the bum. Greed is another aspect that kills businesses. You feel like you’re on a roll and feel invincible so you over charge people and promise them the earth. When you can’t deliver you will lose customers and eventually your reputation. Always be honest and ethical and you will reap the rewards. There are other reasons business fail and I have only touched base on some. As long as you work hard, do plenty of research, treat staff and customers with respect, keep a tight control over your accounts and leave your ego at home you should be alright. Oh and most importantly use common sense. You would be surprised at how many business owners are egotistic, arrogant with no personnel skills and very little common sense, these business are bound to fail eventually.By Carolyn Clayton
