One of my Twitter buddies posted a link and I thought that I would share the article with you guys....From the Wall Street Journal....Q: We have been operating for a couple of years with a strong Web presence and are interested in getting a trademark on our name. Can you shed some light on the most efficient way to do this?--E.R., Spartanburg, S.C.A: Trademark registration is pretty straightforward. Many businesses can file an application online in less than 90 minutes, without a lawyer's help, says Rich Stim, a San Francisco intellectual-property attorney. The simplest way to register is on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site, www.uspto.gov.Before completing the online registration form, check the site's Trademark Electronic Search System ("TESS database") to make sure another company hasn't already registered an identical or similar mark for the same categories of goods or services you offer. U.S. trademark protection is granted to the first entity to use a particular mark in the geographic area where it operates, regardless of whether the mark is registered. But if your chosen mark is already registered by another company -- even if you used it first -- your registration will be rejected and you'll probably want a lawyer to help you proceed.Protecting Yourself From CopycatsOnline trademark registration costs between $275 and $325 and asks for information such as the categories of goods and services for which the mark will be used, date of the mark's first use in commerce and whether there's a design component to the mark you're seeking. Internet businesses registering their names should generally refrain from registering their Web extension, such as .com or .net, with their name, unless they're planning to register the mark both with and without. Getting a trademark without the domain extension will help prevent other businesses from registering the same name by just adding a different extension, Mr. Stim says. He also recommends not designating a specific design of your trademark in order to get the broadest protection.You should receive a response to your application within six months of filing, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site says. There are some scenarios where registering through an intellectual-property attorney -- or at least seeking legal advice beforehand -- makes sense. If your desired mark is similar to another registered mark, or similar enough to confuse people, there's a decent chance your registration will be contested.What's more, it's difficult to register names deemed too generic or descriptive (think "The Ice Cream Shop" or "We Sell Plants"). Hello LadiesI know most of you either have no supplies and want to know where to start, or you have supplies and don't know what to start. I will do my best to guide you to building your supplies and helping you save some money in the process. I think I have a wonderful teacher who has done nothing but assure me that this could be more than just a craft class and yes I still take classes (at least 1 a month). Through my site I will try to keep you posted with similar information that I have but I won't overload you. I just ask that from time to time if you have completed projects, if you post your photos for others to see so we can grow as a group. Some will progress faster than others and some will decide this is not for them. In either of these cases I will do my best to be here for you. Did your strategic planning address this concern.?I took part in a discussion forum that asked this question recently, the strategic planning process has to include everything including the financial problems that may and could occur.Strategic planning is taking those missions and objectives and defining exactly what it is that the company or business is trying to fulfill whether it be short-term or long-term. The vision of any company and or business has to have a plan that summaries every aspect of development, its values, purpose goals. Without this planning the mission will be incomplete, there has to be a guideline in which to follow in order to reach the next level. Companies and or businesses have to incorporate programs, budgets, procedures as other means in taking the company forward into future prosperity and to be able to function according to the strategy in place with room for changes.Financial planning gives an overall appearance of the current and future goals in contributing and seeking out other financial resources, included in the financial planning information that investors will want to view for certain information about the company's present financial information, future revenue, the targeted market.Problems that could occur –Being able to convince investors, banks, any other financial entity that additional funding resources would be an asset in longevity and profit.Repay debts that occur, the change in market, spending habits, customer approval.

Only Everything, so There's Indies in the City

Several years ago, science proved what we already knew: functionality can be deadly. Remember what happened when they put a baby monkey in a cage with a fake monkey mommy equipped with a nipple through which the baby could nurse? The baby died. The other baby thrived in a cage with a real monkey mommy, equipped with nipple, hugs, love and warmth. We're no different.

That's why I host Indies in the City. This Saturday, me and my Indie co-host Lela Barker of Bella Lucce (winner of the 2007 Indie Beauty Business of the Year Award) will gather with other Indies for hugs, love and warmth in Columbia, South Carolina. Lela has been a member of IBN since March 2005 and over the years, we have of course connected through blogging, Twitter, email and phone calls. But at the end of the day, there's no substitute for the hugs, love and warmth that accompany the real thing.

I don't want a cold, hard and merely functional business. I want hugs, love and warmth and I get it at Indies in the City. Lela agrees.

"Connecting with like-minded women energizes me in a way that few other things can," says Lela. "I walk away from these experiences renewed and refreshed, feeling like I’m part of a common sisterhood. I learn and share valuable valuable information with fellow Indies."

Building the Legacy

Like me, Lela has two young children and a husband. Her 10-year old daughter has already incorporated some of her mother's entrepreneurial acumen into her young life by launching a natural dog treat business.

Says Lela, "I enjoy watching my children learn and grow from having shared some of my entrepreneurial experiences with me. Using the skills I’ve acquired over the last few years, we have had great discussions around the issues of branding, budgeting, defining your target market and distribution strategies, assessing market conditions, etc. I am also to help her ways that only a mommy business owner can. For better or worse."

Indie Business Takes You Places

Through her business, Lela has begun to travel to places she never dreamed she'd see in person. Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is one example of the places Bella Lucce has taken her.

While her daughters have yet to board an international flights with her, Lela says its great to set such a positive example for them. She's grateful to her husband, Chris, for holding down the fort as a fantastic dad whether she's at home or flying the friendly skies (or hunkered over a vat of delicious globally inspired beauty.
