10744093094?profile=originalWhile watching the television show, Unsung, a music biography series which sheds much-do light on some of the most influential, talented and yet, somehow forgotten R&B, Soul and Gospel artists of our time. On this particular show they featured rap icon, Kool Moe Dee. He made a statement which reminded me of part of my own journey. He said “my ego does drive the car sometimes.” The statement caught my attention and immediately reminded me of what it takes to get to the place in your life where you recognize and openly admitted that your ego can be in the driver seat of the car of your life and it has a big mouth.

Thinking about my own ego, I re-visited one of the many defining moments in my life. This one was during my time as a flight attendant. Yes, I know, you didn’t know that I had a short stint as a flight attendant. It was one of my dreams and I had the opportunity to live it.

One day I was doing a flight, can’t recall where, but on this flight I was the only flight attendant in the cabin. I did regional flights so it was usually a fifty seat aircraft. It was time for beverage service, and I always started in the rear of the cabin. While setting up for service I hadn’t noticed one of the first class passengers went in the back to use the restroom. Of course as soon as I pushed the cart all the way to the back the passenger comes out of the restroom ready to return to his seat in first class.

Since we’re talking about ego, what do you think I did? Yep. I wouldn’t let him return until I got to the front where there was enough space for him to get back into his seat. Because I wanted to “make my point” about who was in charge. Then to make matters worse, I “apologized” to him for not letting him go back to his seat. Well, he didn’t want to hear it and immediately gave me the front of his palm, also known as the “get out of my face, I don’t want to hear what you have to say” sign.

Well! As you could imagine, both me and my ego were livid. Hot! Upset! How dare he disrespect me in front of the other first class passengers. So now we are having a pretty heated exchange. I didn’t care. I was in “charge” and he needed to know it. But what I had totally forgotten was that I had an administrative ghost rider on my flight and she was sitting in first class. Usually you don’t know when you are being “watched in action.” But it just so happens there was another flight attendant on my flight heading home and somehow she knew there was a ghost rider and she had already warned me. So needless to say, I blew that observation.

What is amazing is that it took me five years to recognize who had really shown up to work the flight 10744093674?profile=originalthat day. It was my ego and it had a big mouth.

When Oprah started her Life Class, the first one I watched was The False Power of Ego. As I listened to the conversation I took it all in and was like okay, how does this relate to me?

The next day I had a conversation with my husband about the class and shared how I believed it related to me, and in that moment, my life had come full circle. The incident I shared about being a flight attendant was because my ego was in the driver’s seat and it had a big mouth. I let ego represent me and speak on my behalf because it needed to not only show the gentleman who was in charge, but it showed me that it was in charge of me too.

When it comes to personal growth, self-reflection, realization and acceptance are very powerful tools.  Using these three strategies can help to transform your thinking and assist you in making the changes needed to go to the next level of your life. There are many experiences and places you will never reach until you pass certain life lessons and learning how to tell your ego to take a back seat and shut up is a lesson you must learn if you are going to truly impact the world with your gifts, talents and abilities.

Here are a few lessons to know and learn about ego because it is tough and stubborn, and will allude you at every turn. If you entertain it, ego will have you abandoning your dreams, settling for less than you deserve, thinking you have all the answers and missing out on amazing opportunities that could move your vision forward.

1) Let go of your need to be perfect

I personally have struggled with the need to be perfect. I refer to myself as a “recovering perfectionist.”  Perfection is an ego-based need, and is used so you can avoid criticism and correction because your ego wants to protect you from them both. Perfection is also the measuring stick we use to compare ourselves to others and it can prevent you from moving forward. Let go of your need to be perfect. Perfection only serves you.

2) Be self-aware

You can’t relate to the ego of another unless you have the same ego within yourself. Becoming self-aware enables you to recognize when your ego is responding to the same ego in someone else. It’s the mirror effect. You are revealed through the reflection of someone else’s behavior. We typically don’t recognize ourselves and believe that it’s the other person with the issue, when often times we have those very same traits. Woman, know thyself. The more you know about you, the real you, the better you know what areas need to be developed.

3) Let go of the need to be right

Oh man! This is a big one. I just know it! Letting go of your need to be right gives notice to your ego that it does not control you. Ego is a tough opponent and will not go away silently into the night. Take a close notice to when you “demand” to be right and the other person is “always” wrong. That my dear is the “Ego game.” You will consistently and regularly explain yourself to prove yourself right. When you feel yourself in the middle of this “game,” stop and ask yourself, Do I want to be right or do I want to exhibit love? For the sake of relationships, personal and professional, let go of being right. I have learned that “right” will surface at some point down the road with relationships in tact. Because of how relentless ego can be, we don’t just want to be right, we want to be right, right now because it wants to protect you from being embarrassed. But when you choose love it expands you and grows you and keeps your ego in check and it’s no longer about being embarrassed, but then about being an example.

Feeling Discouraged

Making jewelry is my passion. Yesterday I had a jewelry party at my home and NOBODY showed up who promised they'd be there, well this is the 2nd time it has happened. I think my jewelry looks just as good as the jewelry in stores. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but at this point I honesty feel like giving up and moving on to a different craft! I have so much jewelry I could open a store.

I recently went on a trip to see some close friends of mine in Chicago. This trip has been in the making for over the past 3 months. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it, due to tight work schedules. However one day, I randomly checked one of my email accounts only to find a “Secret Saver” deal coupon code from JetBlue. The code offered discounts from $20-$500.

The only way to find out how much you could save is by selecting a flight and putting in the code at the register. Read full story at EntrepreneurOpps.com.

Tweak Vs Twitter

tweakvstwitter

These days my blog has been collecting dust! Between banner and blog design requests, I haven’t had as much time to write as I normally do. But you know me, “busy means business”, so I never complain about being busy (lol). But seriously, have you noticed that you can’t open a website without being smacked in the face with 50 Social Media icons … “twitter me” … “facebook me” … watch me sleep (lol). I see some many sistas glued to their smart phones, twittering every minute and I wonder how much of THAT is adding value to their business.

Now don’t get me wrong... I’m on twitter and I see the value of social media marketing (I get may fair share of twitter sales), but if I had to make a choice … hands down I choose my “Tweak Technique” over Twitter any day. As the name suggests, this technique is all about regularly tweaking my business to make it better. As a matter of fact, I’ve been quietly tweaking like crazy these past few months and the results have been amazing! If you want my humble opinion, before you get lost in the latest social media marketing techniques and trending topics, focus on highlighting those areas of your business that need work and make them better.

For me, a few little tweaks have turned into more money and WHO DOES NOT WANT MORE MONEY flowing into their business? I normally only share my marketing techniques with my Smart Business Sista Circle (feel free to join us) BUT just for today I’m gonna let you in on my latest profitable AND productive tweaks.

My Recent Tweaks

#1: I spent the past weekend working on my Money and Marketing Newsletter for my BBWO members and sistasense.com readers. This newsletter now includes 60 of my best marketing articles, videos, freebies and exclusive offers and it’s all done and being auto-delivered to my subscribers (feel free to sign up to the newsletter). Now without having to rush to the computer every night, I can consistently share my BEST Marketing Advice to you and free-up more time to focus on other projects. This one tweak was sitting on my to do list for MONTHS, but finally getting it done has made a BIG Difference. What can you learn from my tweak? For starters if you want to build your presence and stay connected to customers online, you have to stay consistent. Consistency is what this tweak is all about. Beyond sales pitches and new products, I want the people in my circle to know that I'm committed to regularly and freely sharing valuable information. Believe me when I say that getting people to listen to you is the most valuable and hardest thing acquire online. While there are a few more things you can definitely learn from this technique, I’ll save those for later.

#2: One of my first money-makers online was the Search Urban Directory, an online search engine featuring black websites. For years I allowed people to submit sites for free and then eventually, I started charging $10. Now that msoy is one of the oldest and most popular Black Search Engines online I’ve decide to finally raise the submission fee to $25. This price is still pretty cheap, considering it’s a one time fee and a great promotional opportunity for website owners trying to reach African Americans Online BUT that’s not the real idea behind this tweak. In the past getting 4 new site submissions to the directory translated into $40 in sales, now those same 4 submissions equal $100 in sales! Again, while its important to get into new marketing trends, never forget that little old marketing and sales techniques still work. Tweaking prices on products that regularly bring in revenue for me is often times the easiest way to make more money without selling or doing something new.

I have more tweaks that I want to share, but this post is getting longer than I wanted, so I’ll save them for another day. If you do nothing else, I recommend taking the time to dissect your business. See if you can come up with a few ways you can make your business better. If you are stuck on how to start this process let me make a few suggestions. For the past few years I’ve worked on several projects that were specifically about showing other entrepreneurs the areas in their business that they can fix and make better.

I often recommend that newbies take it slow and start with the basics. For newbies in internet marketing, I suggest downloading my ‘Selling Your Products and Services Online’ eBook Collection. Here is a discount code for the next 30 readers who download this eBundle. Code: FIX01 | If you download now you can save $30 and get this ebundle for $19.

Selling Your Products and Services Online:
Three eBooks for Internet Marketing and Sales Beginners

The Ultimate Money and Marketing Guide:
Two 7-Day eCourses on Finding Customers and Selling on Social Networks

The Smart Business Sista Series:
Monthly Marketing eBooks and how-to video tutorials

The Women of Color Coaching Program:
Monthly Marketing Webinars specifically created for Women Entrepreneurs

My favorite of this is definitely the WOCC Program, last year my partner Richelle and I did 12 Months worth of training webinars for Business Women of Color on How to Market their businesses online and offline. The results were amazing because for those 12 months we gave them a constant flow of marketing ideas and different tweaks they could implement to make their businesses better. As a matter of fact, we did a What's Working Now Webinar so our members could show you their results. You can click here to watch the replay.

Carnegie Secret Formula

Carnegie Reveals His Secret FormulaIn 1883, while Carnegie was at the peak of his career, a boy was born to a poor family in a log cabin in the mountains of Virginia. It would be another 10 years before this boy would own his first pair of shoes, and 12 years before he saw a railroad train.Yet, this young man would one day become the advisor to presidents and mentor to millions. His name was Napoleon Hill."I discovered why my father named me Napoleon. I had a great uncle by the name of Napoleon Hill who was a multimillionaire. My father expected that he would leave some of his money to me on account of my having his name."But when the will was read, when I was 14, he had left out the entire branch of Hills from where I came. And I think that was the greatest favor that anybody ever did for me, because having had no inheritance, I had to go to work and learn to make my own money. The second great favor that someone did for me came from Mr. Andrew Carnegie."While in his early twenties, and working his way through college as a part-time reporter, Napoleon accepted an assignment to interview Andrew Carnegie — the wealthiest man in the world — and write an article about him.Carnegie, who was known as a great picker of men, saw something in young Napoleon that intrigued him.Without Napoleon knowing, Carnegie tried a little experiment. During the interview, Carnegie carelessly tossed his secret formula for success at young Napoleon. Then he sat back in his chair, with a merry twinkle in his eyes, and watched to see if this young man had brains enough to understand the full significance of what he had said to him.Napoleon grasped the concept right away but was unprepared for what the canny Scotsman had up his sleeve.Carnegie had finally found the person he was looking for. Now, at 73, he wanted to do more than just give away his money. He realized the potential good that his formula could do for others. He answered Napoleon's questions for three hours. When the time was up, Carnegie said:"This interview is just starting. Come on over to the house and we'll take it up after dinner."Napoleon was glad that he said "come on over to the house.""If he had said go over to the hotel and come back tomorrow morning, I'd have been broke because I had just about enough money in my pocket for the train ticket back home."After dinner, we went into the library and he talked about the necessity of passing on to future generations the sum total of what men like him had learned by a lifetime of trial and error. He said it was one of the sins of the ages that this knowledge was buried with great men when they died."Nobody had ever organized this information and made it available to the man on the street."Napoleon couldn't understand why Mr. Carnegie was wasting his time on a cub reporter like him. He was curious and kept his ears open and mouth shut.Carnegie went on to describe his philosophy — and formula for success — and explain what it would do for coming generations. Then he said:"Now, I've been talking to you for three days about this new philosophy. I've told you all that I know about it, about its possibilities and its potentials. I wish to ask you a question which you will please answer with a simple yes or no."If I commission you to become the author of this philosophy, give you letters of introduction to people whose help you'll need, are you willing to devote 20 years to research, because that's about how long it will take, earning your own way as you go along without any subsidy from me ... yes or no?""What would you have done if you had been sitting there in front of the richest man in the world, with about enough money in your pocket to pay your way back home, who had propositioned you to go to work for 20 years without compensation or without a subsidy? I knew I couldn't do it. I was certain of it. [Note: the reason why Carnegie asked him to do it without compensation will be clear in one of the following chapters.]"Isn't it strange that when you put an unusual opportunity before a person, the chances are 1,000 to 1 that his mind jumps to the 'no can do' part of it immediately."I didn't know this at the time, but I learned about it later. Mr. Carnegie made up his mind that when he put the question to me he would allow me only 60 seconds in which to say yes or no."Sixty seconds, that's all. I didn't see it, but he was sitting there with a stop watch behind his desk timing me, and it took me exactly 29 seconds to make up my mind that I would accept."Then, as Napoleon was about to leave, Carnegie said to him:"Well, Napoleon, 20 years is a long time and I have given you a pretty tough assignment, and you have accepted it. I want to warn you now that you're going to have many temptations along the way, long before you complete your 20 years of research, to quit, because that's the easiest thing that a weakling can do is quit."I don't think you're a weakling. If I had thought so, I would not have given you the opportunity. But I do know that you need something to bridge over your temptations to quit if and when they do come."I'm now going to give you a formula that will enable you to condition your mind so thoroughly that nothing in the world can stop you from going ahead and completing the task to which I have assigned you."Carnegie gave Napoleon a sentence to repeat — once at night and once again every morning. He told him that by repeating this simple sentence, Napoleon would never quit until he succeeded. This sentence, based on Carnegie's success formula, had the power to keep a person on track until he or she succeeded at whatever the person chose to do. Nothing could stop a person who repeated this sentence. At the time, Napoleon was puzzled by it. But as he started his research, it all made perfect sense ... and Carnegie's genius was evident.

BLACK WOMEN GETTING AWAY, A WAY OF LIFE

More women are seeking getaways with a purpose. The traditional girls’ trip to Vegas to drink, party, and return home to relax is no more. There is a travel group to fit many types of travelers, the partier, wine taster, explorer, voluntour, ancestor seeker, fitness, spiritual or singles retreat or a combination of all the above.

10744113274?profile=original

This group of California sisterfriends travel throughout the year and for many years with Sisters and Friends Getaway.

Great news, the growing trend to travel with like-minded strangers is especially exciting to African American women. They are connecting with others outside their network and making annual plans to ‘getaway’ from home and travel. Many excursions target those who seek an adventurous group with a theme that matches their interest.

“Come alone or with a friend,” is the message Connie Portis uses in her outreach to black women seeking a safe getaway experience and want to travel with her annual Sisters and Friends Getaway. In addition, her message is inclusive inviting women at “all stages and all ages” to join in. The Sisters and Friends Getaway tagline “sisters and friends make life more fun,” promotes the proven stress-relieving, rejuvenating impact on mental health when women share the highs and lows of life with each other.

Now in its 15th year, the October 2020 Sisters and Friends Getaway is a five-day all-inclusive jaunt to Barbados. The followers have grown to an expected 150 women this year from the US and the Caribbean. About one-third have attended a previous Sisters and Friends Getaway. From eight “sisterfriends” in Palm Desert to 13 the first year in Martha’s Vineyard to 150 in 2018, and 105 in Negril Tree House in 2019. This eclectic group from California to Texas, to Massachusetts, and Alaska started as a snowball is now an avalanche!

Whether women are traveling solo or with a group, making the right plans can be beneficial and lead to an annual ritual to leave the home-front and explore places and spaces to re-charge their lives.

Connect with Sisters & Friends for the Barbados Getaway.

Challenges of a WAHM

Many of us on this board are mothers who work out of our homes, which presents special challenges. This subject has been weighing on my mind this week, so I decided to write about it.I am a full time mom, and I am certainly blessed to be one. I used to be a teacher and a staff trainer in mathematics, so to finally stop taking care of other people's children and focus totally on my own was truly a relief!! Although some teachers do it, I can't imagine dealing with 20 children every day, then coming home and dealing with my own. Why work to pay someone else to raise my children while I raise someone else's. (And for those who don't think teachers have a large part in raising children - at least the good ones - has never been a teacher.)As much as I am glad to be home, it is not easy to run a business from your home with three little ones 5 and under puttering about. Plus, I'm that silly stay at home mom who doesn't depend on the TV to take care of the children and instead engages them in reading, crafts and the like. So to take the time to complete something during the day, whether it be computer work, formulating new recipes or whipping up orders - well, sometimes it's catch as catch can. I can hear them now, as I write, singing and chatting in their room.So how do I do it? I've gotten to the point where I have to schedule my work in 15 min segments and keep a notebook next to my computer so that I can write down any to-dos or next steps that I need to complete. Believe me, children have a way of interrupting you just as you were about to get the best idea. And it's not always frivolous stuff. My daughter is polite enough to let me know that she's about to use the bathroom, that she's finished using the bathroom, that she's flushed the toilet AND that she's washed her hands. How in the world can I run a business without these updates? She's better than the Bloomberg report! To all of your WAHMs out there, here's a list of what I do to keep sane. Note, this does not work all the time, as those creatures we call children are unpredictable, and on a bad day will do almost anything to get your attention (to learn more about their shenanigans, check out www.blackdomesticgoddess.com1. Make a to-do list the night before, after the children go to sleep. Mine hit the sack at 7 pm. (yes, they do!) This way you can recap the day and have a list in place before those angels jostle you out of sleep at 6 am the next morning.2. Keep a notepad or sticky notes by your computer at all times. That way, when the potty annoucements, requests for juice, or a loud commotion from the other room yanks you out of 15 businesswoman mode, you can (sort of) jump right in where you left off.3. Reach out for help: One time I just showed up on my mom's doorstep with a diaper bag and a desperate look. All I needed was to be away from them for 3 hours to get my head together!4. Remember - it's not that important. If the interruptions are too much, then just stop. If you try to continue and they continue to interrupt, it will just lead to frustration for you and for the little ones. Make a note to pick up where you left off after they go to bed. Some of you early birds may get up early, but I'm not one of that elite group. I'm a night owl. :)5. Take a break from the business. Schedule a weekday where you don't touch the computer until after they go to bed. It's hard, but it's worth it. They'll love the fact that you're looking at them instead of a computer and/or in my case whipping a bowl of shea butter. (Ok, honestly, I've checked my email on these days, but didn't respond until they were asleep. No, really, I didn't. Ok, maybe responded to one or two.....maybe three.)Above all have fun. Yes, we are all trying to grow our business, but remember why you stayed at home in the first place. I didn't leave my educators job to be a bath and body maker - I left it to take care of my children. In my mind, they come first right now. Thanks for reading!
