I want to take this time to thank LaShanda Henry & BBWO for allowing me to share P.E.A.S Magazine on such an important forum, it can be a trying test of perserverance when what your doing is not received, I have not experienced this here. Also thanking all who have supported and shared the magazine/organization's mission, we couldn't do this without you.

"What About Us?” is a film about the abduction of two little girls, one the daughter  of a superstar athlete and the other the daughter of a middle-class business man.  One of these families is provided with unlimited resources and support, while the other family struggles to be heard.  Will they simply accept societies criteria of whose child is worthy of attention or will they take matters into their own hands?

"What About Us"  (Deatra L. Harris) Writer & Director http://www.whataboutus-themovie.com  has partnered with Peas In Their Pods, www.peasintheirpods.com helping to raise awareness when it comes to our missing children. We are so excited and grateful for this partnership, and the opportunity to help as many families as possible.

Please visit "What About Us" for continued updates of movie release.

The winter months can be so unkind to your skin--wrecking havoc by turning hydrated skin into parched skin.  With the dry, cold air outside beating at your skin, with the cranked up heat indoors pulling moisture out of your skin, there seems to be no rescue for your epidermis.  Lost cause?  Absolutely not.  You just have to make a few adjustments to your winter bath & body care routine:

Step 1: Use a gentle grime fighter that won't strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, and that will also add to the conditioning of your skin.  This is the base for healthy, natural, glowing skin.

Organic Love Body WashA pure, organic vegetable castile body wash! Lather up in thick organic goodness of sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and glycerin! Organic Love is enriched with African Black Soap and Green Leaf Papaya to eat up those dead skin cells! Organic Love's saponified oils delivers instant hydrated skin, non-drying!

Green Tea Medley Bubbles100% vegetable bubble bath/cleanser. Specifically developed to deliver light, long lasting bubbles for those long tub soaks. Still formulated to cleanse the skin gently, and effectively, while also protecting the skin's pH mantle and natural oils.

gtm+bubbles.jpg

Step 2: No more than 3 times a week, your skin should receive some TLC with a scrub/polish.  Exfoliating eliminates dead skin sitting on the surface, removes impurities from the pores,  and leaves behind smooth, soft skin.

Almond Whipped Cream ScrubA whippy body wash with exotic sugar, almonds, and Sweet Almond oil to boot. Pick up your favorite sponge or puff and cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and fragrance your body!

Cream Popsicle Layered Sugar ScrubA delicious yet wholesome scrub right in your shower/bath. Two layers of fine grain sugar (pure cane and dark brown sugar);both infused with orange butter (this will only enhance the succulent aroma), pure humectants, and natural oils rich in antioxidants;topped off with Madagascar vanilla.

Sweet Raw Sugar Honey PolishSweet Raw Sugar Honey Polish is a skin delicious blend of large, sparkling, golden crystals, six pure plant oils, and honey to boot.

cream+popsicle.jpg

Step 3: Contribute to your healthy glow by adding an oil treatment to your bath & body routine.  Topping the epidermis off with wholesome oils (emollient) is the best way to seal in moisture.

MarinadeA dry-oil emollient, that is great for those on-the-go days. Seal in the moisture after showering, by spritzing on this Shea Butter oil blend.

Rub Down A luxurious, multi-purpose oil. Rub Down's wild crafted, herbal infusion in plant oils makes it a great oil for massage, hair, and daily emollient.

Pure Body BalmA luxurious way to seal moisture into your skin and hair. A super emollient that delivers skin therapy to dehydrated skin, and brings relief to itchy skin.

To your skin health!

Lovely Ladies, as your go about you day planning and conquering the business world, don't forget to take time out from your busy, entrepreneurial endeavors to take care of you. Remember, healthy, nutritional and skin care habits are important allies in your journey to the top.

Antioxidant, free radicals and scavengers. What are they? Most of you know of or have heard  those words before, and you may also know that they have something to do with the body and skin care. But, do you really know what they are and what they do? I know it's seems simple, but consider this a vocabulary lesson on a few, very important words, that can sometimes be overlooked in the fight against skin care.  If skin matters, this little lesson is for you.

Free Radicals: are scavengers. They attack other cells, and rob them of their energy, leaving the cells worn out, tired, and without energy to do work. Our normal body processes such as, breathing create free radicals. However, much more are created through environmental factors like, toxins and stress.
Antioxidants: are the chemicals in the body, that protects the cells from Free Radicals. Unfortunately, our bodies are influenced by a great deal of environmental factors such as, smoking and medication, which causes a decrease in our antioxidant levels.
Super Foods: are foods that are high in antioxidants.
The bottom line is, if you don't increase your antioxidant levels, free radicals will take over, and spread like wildfire from one cell to the next, which will eventually cause tissue and organ damage. The end result is, disease and premature aging.
So, can you increase your antioxidant levels? Fortunately, yes. Eating lots of Super Foods, reducing stress, limiting exposure to toxins and harmful chemicals, and taking antioxidant supplements will all increase levels.
My next blog will introduce you to the effects of everyday super foods, which can be found in some skin care products, and will definitely boost your antioxidant levels. The first up will be Acai Berry fruit.

The Battle Begins: You Vs You

Are you ready to rumble? While I was working on my latest launched project "SistaSense Monthly (a 12 month audio newsletter)" I out of the blue started writing down phrases like "Hater Vs. Motivator", "Giver Vs Keeper", "Dreamer Vs Doer", "Wish Vs Work", "Fear Vs Fair" until I literally had so many of these on the page I had to stop and figure out what I was subconsciously getting at. Prepping for this new 12 month series all I could think about were these Internal Battles that we all must face with our inner selves.

At the time I was also thinking about New Year's Resolutions and how most people break them. I also thought about how easy it is to say, "man the year just flew by" and "God I hope this year will be better" BUT how much actually does change for us over the course of a year without us going through Internal Battles. Change does not come without the act of making a change. We don't just fall into things and I for one don't plan on waiting for things to fall into place because if/when they do I might not be here. Making every day count is the KEY but man is it a hard key to grasp!

2012 began and I was in a mini-funk. I wanted to stay in holiday / vacation mode. I wanted but didn't want to wrap up the launch of my new Money,Marketing, and Motivation Series. I needed to wrap up client projects, but couldn't find the time OR the energy to fit it in without all the battles going on in my head, literally keeping me in bed curled up with my Kindle wishing life could be just a little easier, a little less REAL.

But I gave myself that time to work through those internal battles and work on as much "work" as I could until now week 2 of year 2012 I am re-energized and ready to get back to doing what I do best "sharing those life lessons that make sense to me with you". I say this all to say outside of all the New Year New You Resolutions talk I wanted to talk about the truth. Truth is we can sometimes be our worst enemy. We can often times think ourselves out of our blessings. We can some times fill ourselves with disabling fear preventing us to really move forward as God intended "SO Eyes Wide Open" I go into 2012 knowing that it's time to rumble. I, you, we are all about to get KNEE deep in "You Vs You" Internal Battles, which will define how well each of us actualize the change that we desperately seek when this year ends and a new one begins.

I am ready to battle it out, so you'll be receiving an on going series from me on the Internal Battles we will all face this year (some of them I mentioned above). The first battle that started off my list was my "Elimination Vs Evolution" video. Point blank, I've watched hundreds if not thousands of black business / web business owners succumb to elimination these past few years while I've been able to stick around in large part because every year I go through an evolution process.

Right now you and your business are at a crossroads. You can either learn how to evolve and fight the odds or prepare for elimination (lost sales, suspended domains, websites gone and forgotten). I created the "Elimination Vs Evolution" video because I have some real eye openers to share with my fellow entrepreneurs who actually want their business to be around come 2013. I for one am in it to win it and I hope you are too!

That is all I have to say for today. I hope you enjoyed my 1st 2012 Motivational / Informational rant (lol). Be sure to watch the video and learn about my new 12 month audio newsletter + leave me a comment ... what do you think about my points on the significance of Internal Battles? Are there any battles you are preparing to fight this year?

Women Entrepreneurs returning back to work?
by ShaChena Gibbs

Many women entrepreneurs work full time from home building their enterprise. We become solely dependent on the income we have been generating from our entrepreneurial endeavors to pay our bills, to maintain personal and professional expenses. Most of the time your business success can actually achieve this task. But what happens when you hit a slow season? How are you going to maintain? or maybe business is going well, you just need more money a lil sooner?

Have you thought about returning back to the work force? back to Corporate America? Many women entrepreneurs have taken that step. A few of my friends have and they set goals to resign after accomplishing their financial reward within 90 to 120 days or even 12 months.

What's stopping you from going back to the work force? Are you telling yourself, it would be embarrassing to tell your friends and family? You may believe they will laugh and say to you that your business must have failed? Because they tried to talk you out of it in the first place. Don't let this be the reason you struggle to get your business and personal finances off the ground or to the next level.

There are many reasons we can talk ourselves out of going back to work. However, if this is a step you need to make then go right ahead and handle your business. You know what is right for you and your family. Sometime we are the bread winners in the household and must make difficult decisions such as going back to work. Or we need to add to the current income coming in. Either way do not let your perception of what others may say discourage your decision.

Going back to work does not mean your business is failing all the time. You must be a leader and make a choice that you feel is the right one. If you decide to go back to work, set a time goal. It could be 90 days, 120, or 12 months as said above. Just set a goal and stick to it. Getting a financial adviser is strongly recommended. They can be beneficial with assisting you in accomplishing your financial goals.

As entrepreneurs we have to get out our own way. We must make do things we don't want to do and at times we don't want to do them in order to achieve SUCCESS!

The Skinny on Skincare: Super foods

superfoods%20sign.jpg

Super foods is the name given to a diverse group of foods found in nature. They are loaded with antioxidants, which has the ability to get rid of free radicals, resulting in less disease, great skin and longer life.
Super foods can be found in, fruits, herbs, dark green leafy veggies and sea weed. Of course, by no means should you rely solely on these foods for all the nutrients that your body needs. Incorporating them in your diet, regularly, will help in the fight against disease and premature aging. In addition, it won't hurt to use skin care products that contain super food extracts because, when applied directly to the skin, the antioxidants are readily absorbed into the cells.
Examples of super foods include
  • strawberries
  • gogi berries also called wolfberry
  • acai
  • spurilina
  • beans
  • pomegranate
  • blueberries
  • oats
  • oranges
  • broccoli
  • soy
  • spinach
  • salmon
  • tomatoes

Black women can’t get married, black women are getting fat, black women are ugly, black women are suffering mental health issues, black woman took a relentless bashing in 2011. I was appalled to she not only the discriminatory material published on black women but more so at the frequency. What is this obsessive interest in the failings of black women?

Two the most offensive pieces seen on black women in 2011 was the report published by Pyscology today, labelling on accounts of scientific research that black women are the ugliest women of all the races and then just recently the Dutch magazine that referred to the singer Rihanna in the title of the article as the "Ultimate Niggabitch". Unbelievable, unacceptable and just racist. Would such defamatory material be published on white, muslim, jewish, or women of other races? Black women are no lower or less deserving of respect than any other race.

10744075470?profile=original

The main areas of this anti-black woman media bashing.

Social research is often not a matter of finding truth or fact but instead finding evidence to support a pre-decided theory, where the truth is bent to fit the theory and not the theory to fit the truth. The point here is not that all these reports are lying and that there are not marital issues within the black community or an increase in obesity, however the facts are presented in a jaundiced manner. It’s easy to say that 42 percent of black women are not yet married, if in that 42 percent women under the age of sixteen are included or if the two to one ratio of men to women is not taken into account. Further, didn’t marriage rates decrease and divorce rates increase across the board in western society? This is not a problem unique to the black community and we do not have a monopoly on social vices.

There are so many reports that take social vices and concentrate on pointing out the black community as the black sheep, when many of such vices are shares across all races. However, the media presents its reports in a way that leaves the question in the readers mind of “what’s wrong with black women?”

"Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position so as to benefit oneself or one's group." - Wiki

I’m concerned that a terrible impression of black women is being moulded. Common misconceptions of black women are being exaggerate and exploited by the media, putting the black women more than 50 years behind time. Black women must stand and step out of the shadow of prejudiced judgment.

In Love & Marriage: Happy Black Women Would be Bad for Media Business, writer Theresa Lasbrey argues that the media launched an “anti-black woman campaign” to counter the image of the Obamas. She writes that the media screams, “The Obamas are not the norm! Do not dream of this for yourself! It is just coincidence that in 2011 every month came with some form of anti black woman report or “study”?

Such media slurs promote self-hate and batters the esteem of black women. We are constantly being told that something is wrong with us, that black men don’t love us, that we are fat, ugly, stupid, loud, poor, difficult etc. Worse still this persistent negative bashing has both blacks and whites believing that there is something wrong with black women in particular.

In surveys of predominantly white participants, negative results are reported as an increase in "something" of women, not an increase of "something" in “white” women. Why so race specific when a particular social vice is high in the black community although it is present for all races such as decrease in marriage and increase obesity.

The situation worsens when black people join the anti-black woman media campaign. The Denzel Principle: Why a Black Woman Can’t Find a Good Black Man, blames black women for setting their standards too high, being too picky, not just settling for any man that sets eyes on them.

Unfortunately, we tend to believe that publications in books or reputable newspaper means that the information must be a valid source of truth. Perhaps that was the case some years ago, but in our times, it’s more often a valid source of someones opinion, as seen by the following popular media outlets.

The Nightline multi-part special entitled “Why Can’t a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?” again blames the character and goals of black women as the hinderance to us finding a man.

The Economist article, Sex and the Single Black Woman: How The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men Hurts Black Women, contributes to the scare campaign.

The Media should to be held accountable for publishing content promoting racial discrimination and Black Media needs to stop assisting the character assassination of its own people and instead writing about solutions where problems exist.

Say “No More”, to anti-black woman media bashing by signing this petition created by All Black Woman. We have already addressed the petition to some of the most outrageous publications of 2011 and intend to name and shame those who would continue such discriminatory behaviour in 2012 by adding them to the petition list. Black Sista will be watching!

CAREER Magazine stood out for me, especially being employed with a company that doesn't really take note of skills that can be used for other purposes besides the everyday routine of doing their business. I started reading Mrs. Harper's advice posts on facebook. Everyday there was something that gave new ways in how to approach management and what I need to do if I am going to continue to be employed. If not there is nothing stopping me from stepping into what I really want to do except for myself.

My year wasn’t totally bad…

I found the holes in my business and plugged them. Now it was time to focus on what is currently working for me and there were a few things that I did right this year. I was always attending webinars and taking tons of notes and the cycle just continued. I decided to stop learning (well more like cut back on taking part in so many) and start putting what I was learning into action. Basically that’s what we all should be doing – learn the knowledge and then apply it.

As I mention yesterday I started setting and tracking my monthly goals more closely. I also required a down payment for jobs before any work began. I put in place new polices and I plan on sticking to them. Since leads for new work came mostly from Twitter, I set up autotweets to promote my services. At some point I felt like I was getting too spammy and stopped (NEVER stop Marketing!). I am still working out the kinks on this one. Plus the service I was using started to suck. [Read entire post]

BlogBook_250x280-150x150.jpgToday marks the launch of my new website, www.TamykaWashington.com and the official release of my latest eBook: How to Build Your Business with Blogging where I share tips on how to establish your brand, build community and create multiple streams of income from blogging. (You can download it for FREE!)

The purpose of this new site is simple, I want to share with you the importance of Content Marketing and how it should be the soul foundation of your online business.

In 2009, when I first created my business, (TheCEOMamma), I was starting from scratch. I had a ZERO advertising budget and my brand was NEVER heard of. I knew in order to quickly build my business and create awareness, I had to use content to attract my ideal clients and use social media to share my content.

It was a no-brainer, marketing content would be the easiest way to do that because I had to let people know about me before I could start selling my products and services. People buy from people they know, like and trust so I had to give value and create a genuine connection with my readers.

Content Marketing combined with effective Social Networking & Social Media Marketing is a powerful way to build your business quickly with little to no start-up costs. How do I know? Because these are the methods I used (and continue to use), to build my business and create buzz for my brand.

In 2012, I will guide you if you:

  • Are starting a new business, are on a limited budget and want to learn effective strategies to establish your brand and business using content.
  • Have a business and want to discover how to use content to create a credible brand online and attract your ideal clients and increase sales.
  • Want to learn how to use content to build your mailing list, fill your pipeline, convert prospects to buyers and incorporate social media into your marketing plan.

I will be sharing many tips, resources and strategies so be sure to subscribe to my blog and stay in the know. I also encourage you to stay connected with me on my Facebook Page, so we can stay in touch…I’d love to hear from you!

It hasn’t been a good couple of weeks and yesterday was the worst. I won’t get into details (keeping my rant for offline). What I will say is that I’ve been coming to terms with a few personal things which gave me time to reflect on the past year. The perfect place to start was with my business. I am writing this to help you not make the same mistakes I did or at least notice them ahead of time so you can nip them the butt quickly.

One of the biggest lessons I learned in the SistaSense Circle is that I needed to identify the problems and find a solution, then look at what’s working and figure out how to duplicate it. This is exactly what I did the other day. I am going to start with the things I did wrong in my business and how I started to correct them.

My Freelance Life: A Year of highs, lows and lessons learned pt.1

At the beginning of the year I didn’t have a clear focus of my target market. I was just open to work with anyone. At some point I settled on a target but it was the wrong one for me. So I had go back and look at every client I had and see who I have been work with. The majority of my work came from Bloggers and Soloprenurs (97% women). I got one problem down, now on to the next one – being Jane of all Trades. [Read entire post]

Blogging for business (or blogging in general) can sometimes feel like a burden instead of a task for some small business owners. Since there always seems to be an ever increasing amount of “encouragement” to blog for business from entrepreneurs and marketers who are reaping the rewards from their blogging, for those who don’t consider themselves a writer, often feel stressed over the mere thought of having to blog on a regular basis.

The question then becomes a battle for those contemplating the responsibility:“Should I or should I not, blog for my business?”

That decision is totally up to you, of course…but in my opinion, I say: YES, You Should!

So, how can you blog for your business without it becoming an overwhelming chore when writing is not your forte?

You start by finding your unique voice, your style of communication. Blogging is all about communicating with others and sharing value. Think about how you conversate with your friends and family. Do you like to “paint a picture” when you are sharing with someone about your day? Do you often give facts and details about a situation? Are you very opinionated when you express yourself? Do you like to give your advice and help others through a dilemma?

Whatever way you communicate on a daily basis, is the same way you can communicate with your readers. Identifying your style of conversational flow is what gives you authority in your industry and the ability to stand out from everyone else in the blogosphere.

When you write using your unique voice, blogging becomes easier because you are being authentic to who you are as a person.

Here are 4 Ways You Can Combat Stress When it Comes to Writing Blog Posts:

Tell a Story – Some people are natural story tellers, they have a unique gift to create a vivid picture of their experience when talking that you feel like you are right there with them. They can pull you in so deep you can almost feel and smell the atmosphere.

I love reading posts when the author can “suck” me into their world through their words. The key to effective storytelling in relation to your blog, is to be sure the story ties in to your topic.

Solve a Problem – I fall into this category (mostly). People who are very observant are able to recognize problems and offer solutions, if of course they have the solution. For example, this post is providing information and a solution for my readers who are struggling with blogging.

When it comes to my business and my blog, I strive to provide clear and easy to apply answers to help my readers gain a better understanding. Blogging to solve a problem(s) requires good listening skills.

Share How-To’s – Some people like to be definite and get straight to the point. If you are the one out of the group of your friends who is always saying, “what you NEED to do is….” you can be direct and factual in your writing.

Not everyone wants to hear a story behind the “what” and they “why”, they want to just know the “how” and that is a great flow for those logical thinkers.

Be Conversational – Do you have a natural ability to attract people to you simply “because”? Charismatic people are like a magnet and have a big personality that can take over and draw you in.

Many intellectuals have a keen perception of how things are and put their own spin on their beliefs and ideas which can interest those who enjoy seeing and learning things from a unique perspective.

When it comes to blogging for business, you must embrace your authenticity, and learn to be comfortable using your voice. When you are able to mesh your style of communication with your business expertise, you will attract loyal readers and create a unforgettable brand.

I’d love to know your unique voice and communication style and how you apply it to your blogging. Share in the comments below:
