Two weeks ago, in the HyperPigmentation post, I mentioned that the increase of melanin in my skin is a gem, because one of the gifts is slowing down the process of skin aging. Well I'm certainly not taking that for granted. Two areas that I give extra TLC to are my elbows and knees. It's possible that those with an increase in melanin can get by without as much concern, care, and adverse effects to those areas, than those with less melanin. But why neglect something that's so easy to take care of? When I was a young child and teenager, I remember admiring my mother's legs--so beautiful and fit. She is now in her 60's, and I am still admiring them. Her youthful knees look so good in a pair of shorts.
Skin on elbows and knees naturally tend to be dry, due to the lack of oil glands in those areas. Being used more than other body parts, daily, the elbows and knees become flaky, chapped, rough, and scaly. With the warm weather gracing you with its presence, make sure your elbows and knees are making a healthy appearance.
Dry and discolored skin on elbows and knees, can usually be repaired with these two steps:
- Exfoliation- Help in the regeneration of new, healthy skin, by gently removing dead skin cells. Do this 2-3 times a week.
- Moisturize- If you are using a body polish in step #1, then you are already sealing in moisture. However, your elbows and knees will not object to adding a bit more lotion or emollient. Moisturizing right after a bath or shower is best (45-minute window). Remember, when you are giving that bit of TLC to your hands, feet, and neck at bedtime....love to knees and elbows, too.
If dry, rough elbows and knees are a problem for you, try the tips above. You will notice a difference.
Don't have those problems? Good. Add the tips above to your bath & body regimen, and continue to have healthy looking elbows and knees.

I love my dark chocolate skin! Being one of my favorite physical attributes, my skin motivates me to remain consistent with its regimen--water intake; healthy eating; exercise; giving special attention to pimples, burns, blisters; and taking preventive measures before spending major time in the sun (which I love). Truly, the increase of melanin, in my skin, is a gift-- protection from sunlight, and it slows down the process of skin aging. But, like many with this gift, irregular pigmentation can be an issue. Hyperpigmentation.
The effect of an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color.
There are several causes for hyperpigmentation (pregnancy, antibiotics, illness, etc.), but exposure to sunlight is the major one. Let's say you have a pimple that accidentally gets ruptured (mmhmm, stop popping those pimples), you go out for a day in the sun, the next day, you notice a dark spot were the pimple use to be. Maybe you already have dark patches on your skin, and after spending a day out in the sun, those patches have become even darker. Why is that? Melanin protects your skin from the overexposure of sunlight, but in order to do that, it has to absorb the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Hence, dark spots/darker patches.
When speaking of irregular pigmentation, many solely reference the face as the victim. The face is the most exposed area on the body, but hyperpigmentation happens all over. With warm weather returning, arms and legs are anxious to make their appearance. Be sure you're ready to protect your bronzy glow.
Cleansing- To aid your skin in regenerating pigment due to skin damage (blisters, burns, skin infections), use cleansers such as Palm Oil Soap, Organic Love, and Specialty Bar Soap, twice a day. These cleansers are high in vitamins, vegetable oils, and raw butter.
Exfoliate- For skin cell regeneration, and a youthful glow, don't forget to exfoliate. This time of year calls for scrubs that are fine in texture. Plus, it's spring/summer time, so get something fun! Sugar! Use Mojito Sugar Smoother, or any of the DECADENCE Layered Sugar Scrubs to gently remove dead skin, for a healthy-skin-glow, and for even skin tone.
Moisturize- For a topical shade use Marinade, Whip Cream Body Lotion*, Lush Body Butter, Mojito Body Spread, Tantouchthis Body Spread*, and Matcha Body Spread. These super emollients contain vegetable/fruit oils, and raw butters that help in defending your skin against UV rays. They are light in weight, making them excellent for warm weather jaunts.
We're not just about making you smell good--live good. feel good. smell good.™
- *Whip Cream Body Lotion makes a great after-sun product. It contains soothing whole leaf aloe vera concentrate.
- *Tantouchthis Body Spread is known to give bronzy, sun-kissed skin.
Plan on having long park days or beach fun this year? Sunscreen is recommended for those with an increase of melanin in their skin.

The winter months can be so unkind to your skin--wrecking havoc by turning hydrated skin into parched skin. With the dry, cold air outside beating at your skin, with the cranked up heat indoors pulling moisture out of your skin, there seems to be no rescue for your epidermis. Lost cause? Absolutely not. You just have to make a few adjustments to your winter bath & body care routine:
Step 1: Use a gentle grime fighter that won't strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, and that will also add to the conditioning of your skin. This is the base for healthy, natural, glowing skin.
Organic Love Body Wash- A pure, organic vegetable castile body wash! Lather up in thick organic goodness of sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and glycerin! Organic Love is enriched with African Black Soap and Green Leaf Papaya to eat up those dead skin cells! Organic Love's saponified oils delivers instant hydrated skin, non-drying!
Green Tea Medley Bubbles- 100% vegetable bubble bath/cleanser. Specifically developed to deliver light, long lasting bubbles for those long tub soaks. Still formulated to cleanse the skin gently, and effectively, while also protecting the skin's pH mantle and natural oils.
Step 2: No more than 3 times a week, your skin should receive some TLC with a scrub/polish. Exfoliating eliminates dead skin sitting on the surface, removes impurities from the pores, and leaves behind smooth, soft skin.
Almond Whipped Cream Scrub- A whippy body wash with exotic sugar, almonds, and Sweet Almond oil to boot. Pick up your favorite sponge or puff and cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and fragrance your body!
Cream Popsicle Layered Sugar Scrub- A delicious yet wholesome scrub right in your shower/bath. Two layers of fine grain sugar (pure cane and dark brown sugar);both infused with orange butter (this will only enhance the succulent aroma), pure humectants, and natural oils rich in antioxidants;topped off with Madagascar vanilla.
Sweet Raw Sugar Honey Polish- Sweet Raw Sugar Honey Polish is a skin delicious blend of large, sparkling, golden crystals, six pure plant oils, and honey to boot.
Step 3: Contribute to your healthy glow by adding an oil treatment to your bath & body routine. Topping the epidermis off with wholesome oils (emollient) is the best way to seal in moisture.
Marinade- A dry-oil emollient, that is great for those on-the-go days. Seal in the moisture after showering, by spritzing on this Shea Butter oil blend.
Rub Down- A luxurious, multi-purpose oil. Rub Down's wild crafted, herbal infusion in plant oils makes it a great oil for massage, hair, and daily emollient.
Pure Body Balm- A luxurious way to seal moisture into your skin and hair. A super emollient that delivers skin therapy to dehydrated skin, and brings relief to itchy skin.
To your skin health!

Included in this article is a very easy bubble bath recipe. Enjoy!
However, if you want to really be assured of taking a soothing bath free of harmful ingredients, the best things you can do is to create your own bubble bath. A bubble bath can help enhance your skin as well as uplift and rejuvenate your mind and spirit.
When you create your own bubble bath you know that you are taking better care of your body because you are not using the chemicals that can be found in other bathing products.
Additionally, you know that your concoction is fresh and that it hasn’t sat for who knows how long on some shelf somewhere! And when you create your own bubble bath, you naturally learn about the different essential oils and products that can help you better care for your body in and out of the bath.
One of the main ingredients in a handmade bubble bath is an essential oil of some sort. There are many oils that have many different purposes. There is no need to add more than a few drops to your bubble bath, as all oils are rather potent.
Allowing your body to relax is part of taking proper care of the body. The bath is a perfect time to do this, and many people bring books with them to better help them relax during bath time. The right essential oils can contribute to your relaxation as well.
Or you might select oils for the way they smell. You can choose a scent that you like best from among oils like Lavender, Rosewood, Sandalwood, and Chamomile. These all are considered soothing. Even though essential oils are natural some basic precautions need to be taken. Check with the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy to find out more about essential oil safety precautions.
It is also important that your body feel energized at times and uplifted. This contributes to mental health and well being as well. Some of the essential oils that can help you with this care of the body are Eucalyptus, Spearmint, Peppermint, and lemon oil. Additionally, Eucalyptus can help your body fight cold symptoms, as it reduces congestion. Many people who create their own bubble baths actually make one for relaxing and one for revitalizing, in order to have what the body needs on hand.
Other oils are especially good at softening the skin. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and taking care of the skin is important. Almond oil and coconut oil are both excellent skin care choices. Almond oil has almost no smell to it, so it does not conflict with any oil you add for scenting purposes. Coconut oil has a nutty and floral fragrance which can help you feel as though you are in an exotic garden.
However, it is possible to find scents that compliment the coconut oil and provide other effects. In fact, many handmade bubble bath recipes call for the combination of different oils for better effect.
Bubble Bath Ingredients
In addition to oils, there are other ingredients that are necessary to make handmade bubble bath. Distilled water, castille soap and liquid glycerin are ingredients found easily and relatively inexpensively. They are necessary to help create the bubbles, add a liquid form to the bubble bath and to provide a solution for mixing. None of these substances is generally harmful, and they add a great deal to the bubble bath mixture, as they are clean and can be used to clean the body as well as to create bubbles to sit in. Below is an easy recipe for creating your handmade bubble bath.
This bubble bath has lavender and patchouli oils to relax you before bedtime. Use soft music and lighted candles in your bathroom for a soothing effect.
- 6 drops lavender oil
- 3 drops sandalwood oil
- 2oz distilled water
- 4oz liquid castille soap. (4 oz. Bar)
- 2oz liquid glycerin
Directions: mix the water, soap and glycerin together and stir. Now add your essential oils to the mixture.
It is easy to improve the care your body gets during a bath when you create your own bubble bath to help you better cope with the general stresses of life.
Question: What other things do you do to help relieve stress?
When it comes to the word Spa, what are some words that pop in your mind? I can say for sure pampering, rejuvenating, relaxing, and tranquility are some of the word that comes right off of the top for me. These words are also what women looks for when it come to creating a spa atmosphere and this concept shouldn’t change when it comes to creating a basket either.
You want to make sure that when you are designing a basket that your basket has a nice even flow and that it’s not over crowded with the same items. In other words, you have to make sure your basket has a theme and make sure that your colors are the same as well. You want to make sure the scents are basically the same because you don’t want to mix Lavender and Chocolate in the same basket.
Here are list of items that should always have in your Spa Basket.
You should always have some type of cleaning or washing products. Just choose any one of these products:
· Body wash
· Bubble Bath
· Bath Salt
· Shower Gel
While you’re still in the bath or shower, it’s a good time to exfoliate the skin and you can choose any one or you don’t have to depending on your budget.
· Brown Sugar Scrubs
· Sea Salt Scrubs
· Sugar Scrubs
You want to moisturize and hydrate your skin once you’re out of the shower. You will need to have at least one or two of these pampering items in your basket:
· Body Cream
· Whipped Body Butter
· Body Oil
Also you can add any of these item to your basket as well:
· Hand cream
· Pedicure Cream
· Fragrance oil scent
To complete your basket it’s always a good idea to have at least two or three essential items in your Spa Basket:
· Body Brush
· Neck pillow
· Spa slippers
· Plush towel
· Pillar candles
· CD of soothing or meditation music
· Gift certificate for massage or facial
Then collects all your items and put them all in a nice basket filled with plenty of decorative shred lined on the bottom and around your items. You don’t have to use a basket; you can use any decorative boxes, bath caddy, or decorative gift bags.
So no matter what budget you are working with you can create a Spa Basket for any occasion.
Caribbean Ginger is one of my favorite scents by Soul Purpose. It has a nice, clean and fresh scent; it's a great scent for the summer. I especially like the shower gel. It is so refreshing and invigorating. After I shower, my skin literally feels like silk. But don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.
