1st Fitting

So I finally tried on the wedding dress (that I made). I love it and although it's different than what i had originally wanted, I still LOVE. This is the only place I can post any pictures, because I am sure my future husband will not join this community. My hair was a mess, I have on a regular bra, and the dress needs a really good pressing, but I just tried it on for "fitting" purposes. Being my bottom has is slightly larger than my upper, I only have to have it taken in at my bust. The length is ok, I added 3 inches before I started. It could be longer, but I am still pondering the actual shoes I am going to wear. One of my good friends is letting me borrow her "bustier" for my wedding so that's my "borrowed" item. I still am looking for something blue... not really sure how that's going to fit into my brown, ivory and orange theme, but I will make it work. I am sure my mom has something "old" for me because she still (after 30 years) has all of her wedding items.I am really excited for September to come! You ladies will start seeing more pictures as the date comes closer and of course after the wedding.

Few Woman-Owned Firms Looking AbroadA survey finds women business owners aren't making the most of the global marketplace.By: Ana Patricia FerreyPublished June 26, 2008Woman businesses owners aren't taking full advantage of the global marketplace in the competition for corporate clients, according to the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. In a recent survey of more than 400 woman-owned businesses across the United States, only a few placed India among their top five suppliers for goods and services, even though it was cited as a leading outsourcing country by larger corporations, the Washington D.C.-based advocacy group said. By contrast, most survey respondents cited Canada as their top supplier.Joan Kerr, chair of the group's global committee, said India's dominance as a supplier for larger companies should prompt more U.S. women entrepreneurs to look at the country as an important resource."The study produces clear evidence that women's businesses must think creatively about partnering or buying abroad to win corporate clients," Linda Denny, the group's president and CEO, said in a statement.http://www.inc.com/news/articles/2008/06/womenbiz.html?partner=rss-alert

How to Create a "Media Buzz"

No one’s going to know anything about you do unless you tell them. You have to “create a buzz.” What does that mean? It means you have to market yourself in such a way that creates attention to you and visibility. How do you do that?Promote Yourself. Don’t Be Shy. If you want to be recognized for what you do you have to promote yourself. I am a big fan of Press Releases, however, they only work if you know how to write them. As a former News Assignment Editor I can tell you first-hand that an overwhelming majority of releases get tossed by journalists because they are either poorly written, lack newsworthiness or are just plain dull. The headline of your press release should be an attention grabber.Which one of these headlines would make you want to read more?Invite Me Over to Trash Your HouseNew Author Wants to Help You Organize Your HouseIf you’re an author, find a way to tie your book into a current news event. Or better yet, create your own media news event. Romance authors, for example, should always be able to capitalize during the holidays---especially Valentine’s Day.You can also promote yourself thru blogging and connecting to groups and organizations—both on and offline.

Every savvy Black business owner knows that having a professionally designed web site is a must. But what isn’t well known to many is that not just any old web site will due. Your Black business web site is a direct extension of your business. If your web site looks mediocre and unprofessional, well guess what? Visitors to your site will view your Black business as being mediocre and unprofessional.

Here are two key components that every black business web site should have.

Professional graphics and images, because let’s face it - IMAGE IS EVERYTHING! If the graphics or images on your site look fuzzy or distorted then your sight needs a makeover. The graphics or an image on your site does not have to be extravagant but they do need to be professional. The right designer will create graphics for your site that are web ready. Web ready graphics load quickly and have a resolution of at least 72 dpi.

For professional royalty free images that compliment the text of your site you can select from Fotolia.com or Istockphoto.com. These sites provide low cost web ready images starting from a $1 a picture.

Informative and persuasive text – You must capture your visitor’s attention. The text you provide on your site must provide information your potential clientèle will find useful. It must also be presented in an easy to read format. That means using short sentences, bold page titles and paragraph headers, and bullet points. Your visitors are not going to read the text on your site word from word. Nope, they are going to skim your site for the information they need and then move on. So don’t use unnecessary words or provide them with useless information.

Your business features and benefits should be apart of the information you provide. If you really want your black business web site to convert visitors to buyers, you must explain how they will benefit from your service(s) or product(s).

On a Black business site it is not enough just to list your services. Here is an example of giving a feature and telling a potential client what is in it for them.

Example 1: Each site we design includes strong call to action messages that convert more visitors into buyers. More buyers EQUAL MORE MONEY your business web site makes for you.

Once you have captured your visitor’s attention with informative text, it is time to present them with a task to accomplish. Or what is commonly known as a call to action message. A call to action message can be as simple as Call Us Now, Take Advantage Of This Offer Now, Schedule Your Consultation Today etc. We actually recommend using a minimum of two call to action messages per page.

Call To Action Messages should:

· Be placed midway of a page after you have given some useful information or features benefits and again at the bottom of the page.

· Differentiated from the rest of the text on the page by font color, size or boldness.

If either of these two key components is missing from your site, then you may want to consider a web site makeover. Remember your Black business will benefit greatly from a web site that projects a professional image and convinces visitors to use your service(s) or buy your product(s).

Build a Media Plan

Identify the radio and or television shows you would like to be interviewed on. Listen to those programs so you can get an idea of the interviewing style of the host. Find out the kind of topics he or she tends to focus on to see if you would be a good fit for their show. The worst thing you can do is send an email or media release to someone who focuses on politics and you want to talk about gardening. Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt to let the host know you listened to a particular show and how much you enjoyed it as you pitch yourself as a guest.Don't limit yourself to just the stations in your immediate area. Make sure you cover as much territory as possible. Remember, radio interviews can be done over the telephone. Another thing: If you know you're going to be on vacation in a particular area on a specific date, contact the stations in that market and let them know you'll be available. You don't have to tell them you're on vacation---just that you'll be in the area. And don't be afraid to hype up the fact that the Host is getting a great opportunity to interview you.Know the News of the Day: By knowing what's happening in and around your world, you should figure out how you can tie in your book---especially if you're a non-fiction author. For example: If there's a school shooting in your community and you've written a book young people and crime, call all of the media outlets and offer yourself as an expert.

Who cares if you wrote a book or started a new business that you’re really excited about? Is your enthusiasm going to pay your bills and earn you the kind of status you’ve been working hard to achieve? Is that gung-ho attitude going to allow you to break “even” on the money you’ve already invested in your project? While having a positive attitude is important to pursuing your goals, you’re going to need some help along the way. Let’s be realistic. Your book (business) may do OK by word of mouth and press releases but just think of what could happen with something called “mega publicity.”No, I’m not talking about one radio or newspaper interview in your community. I’m referring to your ability to reach the masses. How do you do that? You could try calling Oprah and if she calls you back–the rest is history. Of course, for the vast majority of us, Harpo will never call but that shouldn’t stop you from putting a plan of action together that could, very well, get Oprah’s attention in the future.Build a media plan complete with a list of mainstream radio and television stations as well as newspapers. Also include internet radio stations and podcasts. Then start mapping out your strategy for making valuable connections. If you believe it’s your time to shine, let me help you turn on the spotlight!

Mobile Blogging

Mobile Blogging is on the Cutting EdgeMobile blogging is an exciting phenomenon that is sweeping the blogosphere. One of the reasons why a lotof bloggers are attracted to the medium of blogging in the first place is that they enjoy being able to makefrequent updates and posts that keep all of their visitors up to speed with current situations. Mobile blogs, or"moblogs," take this to the extreme by allowing users to post things literally as they happen. This new wave ofmoblogs and mobloggers keep web surfers up to date with good and bad events of importance as they occurall over the world, helping to make international communication faster and more accurate. Many people feel that the limitations of blogging have a lot to do with geography. After all, there is only socurrent that a blog can be when you need to run home and boot up in order to update it. However, mobileblogging marks the beginning of an thrilling new era when web-based communication can happenspontaneously from any location. Moblogging devices mean that there is almost nowhere on the planet thatremains off-limits for bloggers.Mobile blogging is still in its infancy because the technology that makes it possible has only recently hitthe global market. The first moblog technology became available over a decade ago, but it is only the past twoor three years that mobile web devices have become user-friendly enough to appeal to most consumers. Ascamera phones and other mobile technology become more popular, more and more bloggers are getting awayfrom their desks and are hitting the streets. Moblogging is becoming much more widespread that it was even afew months ago, and mobloggers are quickly attracting a lot of attention with the blogging community. It is notyet clear whether moblogs will become the dominant kinds of blogs in the years to come, but the currenttrend seems to imply that moblogs are here to stay.Mobile devices make it possible to blog from the sites where current events are unfolding, which is one of thereasons why mobile blogging has so much thrilling potential to revolutionize the blogosphere. A mobloggerwith a camera phone can post blog entries from, say, the foot of the podium at a presidential speech, or from thestands during the final moments of the world series. This enables bloggers to experience the same real timethrills that live television coverage provides, but in a more democratic medium. The combination of mobilityand individual control that moblogging provides certainly places mobloggers on the cutting edge oftoday's communications technology, and it is hard to imagine that the number and prestige of moblogs willnot continue to grow in the coming years.Barbara Howard

Cathy Hughes Advice to Black Women in Business

This is a reprint of an EZine article. I thought it might inspire you a bit today!

Cathy Hughes' Advice to Black Women in Business
By Bedford E.

Meet one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time!

Cathy Hughes is the founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African American owned and operated broadcast-company in the nation. Radio One is the first African American company in radio history to dominate several major markets simultaneously and possesses the first woman-owned radio station to rank #1 in any major market.

Cathy Hughes knows what it takes to overcome major hurdles in the male dominated arena of business and entrepreneurship.

I recently interviewed Ms. Hughes for her perspective on black entrepreneurship and specifically asked her to give her advice to black women considering business.

Bro. Bedford: What advice would you give Black Women about going into business?

Cathy Hughes: The most important aspect of a woman going into business I think is really identifying and forming a support group. So often people who love us feel a need to protect us and they sometimes over protect us and make us squeamish and afraid to be adventurous.

You have to be BOLD and ADVENTUROUS if you are a woman going into business. Even though more and more women are going into business, it is still a male dominated game.

In my case it was my mother, I can’t tell you…my mother would cry, she would beg me, “Please get a government job, you’re in Washington D.C. You’re smart and people like you, Give Up! You’re sleeping on a floor in a sleeping bag. Cathy, people think you’ve lost your mind; they think you’ve had a nervous breakdown, what’s wrong with you. Go get a good Government job and stop trying…”

My mother was not trying to stop me from being a successful Entrepreneur, she was worried about me, and she was scared for me. I had lost everything to try to hold on to this business and she was ready for me to throw in the towel out of love and protection. But guess what? It was also so discouraging.

So I started lying to my mother. When she would call and ask have you turned it around? I would say, “Oh yeah momma things are just great!”

Guess what? In lying to my mother about my business turning around and doing great, I started to believe it myself. And once I started to believe it myself, guess what? It started to happen! (Laugh)

I tell women so often, your husbands, your brothers, your sisters, your mothers, your fathers, your neighbors, sometimes even your financial advisors and your lawyers are the first to want to protect you.

There is still this thing…its so interesting because Black Women don’t get a lot of help, but we get a lot of protection “allegedly”. A lot of advice on what we should be doing, which discourages us, because Black women are full of PASSION and EMOTION. So if someone tells us we’re making a mistake most of us, unless we’re just knuckleheads, we stop and analyze it.

Am I really acting crazy…I am sleeping in a sleeping bag and cooking on a hot plate like my momma said. Maybe I am not really realizing…

So you have to put on blinders you have to be myopic, you have to keep your eye on the prize you cannot sometimes share with people; you’ve got to lie.

When people say how’s it going? They may be getting ready to foreclose on your underwear, but you’ve got to say, “I can’t tell you, today was just Fabulous!” (Laugh)

Bro. Bedford: Best day I’ve had

Cathy Hughes: Best day I’ve had since I’ve been in business (Both Laugh)

You say it enough the first person that you’re going to convince is yourself, because who is hearing it more than anybody else, YOU!

Your attitude really does determine your altitude.

With women we normally can’t get a lot of financial or other help. Sometimes you don’t need the finance you just need someone to give you a helping hand. But Lord have mercy do people give us advise under the guise of I’m just trying to protect you; I’m just trying to look out for you.

Well if you’re trying to look out for me loan me that $10,000 I need to make payroll. (Laugh) I don’t need you discouraging me.

It’s funny because people want to be politically correct, they don’t say to you point blank you shouldn’t be doing this. They’ll say, “Do you think it’s really worth it? Do you think that maybe you’re sacrificing too much? What about you? What about your personal life?” I’m trying to build a business right now. My business is my personal life.

So I tell women don’t get discouraged and try to find somebody in a comparable situation if not maybe the same situation, but a comparable situation.

People are amazed, Entrepreneurs call me frequently and they’re like, “you took my call”. Yeah, because I can’t tell you how lonely it was for me when no one would take my call. It may have taken me a few weeks and sometimes if I get backlogged maybe a couple of months.

I’ve called people back and they’re like, “I forgot I called you Ms. Hughes”, I will return your call you’ve just got to be patient because sometimes its just a word of encouragement that we need to get over the hump.

Marketing your Business using Autoresponders

bannera.jpg

Before I dive into the subject of my blog post, I would like to thank LaShanda for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts and information with you as part of the Blogality Show. I learned a lot through my research and truly enjoyed writing the blog posts. I certainly hoped many of you benefited from the information. What are autoresponders? Before I got into business and began researching various low cost and free ways of marketing my business. Autoresponders are email programs that can send an automated response. Presently, there are autoresponders that are more sophisticated that than and are able to send a series of composed messages on a pre-determined schedule. I’m sure many of you have browsed the web and signed up for those e-courses that send you information via e-mail every week on the topic you chose. It’s a easy way for a business owner to keep in touch with his/her clients via email without spending loads of time at the computer. These programs help business owners work smarter. How can one benefit from autoresponders? Let’s say that you own a travel business and you want to give your clients tips for travel. Instead of listing them on your website, which they may or may not visit, send them a tip a week or every two weeks. Every time they get your tips via email they think about travel and will most likely visit your site where you will have more content for them to read. The same thing can work with self-esteem tips, business tips, weight loss tips, etc. There are so many subjects related to your business that you can send to your clients. In addition, if your tips are good, then your clients will forward them to people they know and they will visit your website.Where do I get an autoresponder? There happens to be a free autoresponder available for your use. Check out this website at www.drquek.com. You will have to upload and install the program yourself. However, there are services that may make it a little easier for you, but for a fee. Check out www.getresponse.com and www.icontact.com. Depending on how savvy you are with installing programs, it may be worth the monthly fee to have a simpler interface.I have downloaded Dr. Quek’s program, but have not yet installed it. When I do, I will certainly let you know!

How is your business doing?

Having your own business requires consistent review. Ideas are continuously flowing and ways to improve are being flushed through your mind. Taking it up to the next level is the main goal - not wanting to miss out on being able to provide the services that your competitors are able to deliver. In fact, you want your business to be even better - stand out - completely unique in delivering services that others really need and you can give it to them.Well, I have a list of questions that I often ask myself• How am I doing?• What can I do to improve?• Am I offering my clients an invaluable service?• What about my internal clients? Are they feeling appreciated?• Are my external clients referring me to others?• How effective is my networking?• Am I investing enough time into my business?I can continue on with the questions. However, most important in keeping your business report, be sure to take an honest look at yourself. Your well being - your physical, emotional/mental health are vital in doing business. Your purpose in doing business is not only to be your own boss, be in control but to also enjoy life on your terms. You want to live a prosperous life - well, you also need to live a healthy life. Be sure to take care of the business of your own health.• Stay hydrated (drink water, 100% fruit juices)• Make time to get pampered (spa, massage, body rub/scrub)• Exercise (enjoy a yoga class)• Meditate (quiet time to center yourself)• Make healthy eating choices (salad, fruits, vegetables, vitamins, etc.)• Visit your doctor and follow the standard health screenings• Travel (plan a vacation - go see other places)• Spend quality time with your family• Donate your time, clothes, other items or money to a worthy cause• Go out for a night on the town (concert, dinner, Broadway show, museum)• Make time for a social gathering (group of folks who share common interests, friends)• Play golf, tennis, chess, dominos, basketball, softball, base ball, etc.• Go to a book store pick up that book you've been meaning to read• Relax and begin to read your book - even just a chapter or two - then be sure to make some time to continue reading it again - even if you have to take it to the mandatory room (the place we all have to sit for a while). You are in business with the goal of enjoying life. I know it's hard to step away especially when you are constantly working on something new or something that requires your attention, or just having to put that time in to see the business grow. It will grow but you will be surprised at the growth you can achieve by taking care of yourself. It builds your confidence - you will feel like a billion bucks, and most of all your business will improve.

What Makes Me a Media Expert?

Before you decide to give anybody your hard-earned money for media services, you need to do some homework. You need to ask yourself AND the “expert” what makes them qualified to teach you about getting media exposure and the other little tricks of the trade when it comes to publicity. Is it because they send out the most emails boasting about all they can do to help you or have you talked to real people who can give you glowing testimonials about their work?Did they have a real job in media where they were in a decision-making position to determine who would be a good candidate for an interview?Do they have resourceful contacts? By that I mean, do they have actual names of contacts or are they referring you to a general number---which we can all get in a phone book.Do they push clients through a “system” without giving them much individualized attention? Is bigger really better? Can they give you FULL SERVICE or LIP SERVICE?The truth of the matter is, for every qualified expert, there are at least a dozen wannabes. As someone who spent more than 25 years in the radio and television news business, I had to decide daily who would make a good interview candidate. It’s a screening process and if you don’t know the basics of what it takes to get the kind of media exposure you’re seeking, you’ll be spinning your wheels and end up going nowhere. If you feel it’s your time to shine, I’d like to help you turn on the spotlight! But before you decide, make sure you google me: Beverly Mahone & Talk2Bev

The Middle class consists of managers and highly paid professionals, and the Lower class is made up of people who are paid average or low wages, receiving "welfare", unemployed or homeless. In Detroit and other cities like it, a fourth social class has emerged in the minds of those who occupy it that falls somewhere in between the middle and upper classes.Unlike the other classes, the fourth is more of an active state of being. It is a verb. People in this class act out and represent what it means to be in the upper middle class. The fourth class is called FLOSS.Friends since childhood, Abel, Solomon, and Jabez strive to climb the social ladder. Cousins Dionysus and Torah strive to climb that same ladder, but they would much rather travel on the backs of men like Abel, Solomon and Jabez.Tyse wants to climb that ladder as well in the company of men like Abel, Solomon and Jabez while attracting women like Torah and Dionysus. Will they all be able to get up the ladder without pulling some down or walking over others? Will the ladder be able to support all of their weight, or will jealousy, envy, and betrayal cause everything that they have worked for to all come crashing down around them? When the worlds of these six socialites collide and become intertwined the outcome is scandalous. Will the controversies that they encounter be worth the cost that it takes to FLOSS?
