Never Giving Up

Ever since 8th grade I've wanted to publish my work, however, I never really knew how to go about it. I went through college deciding to become a magazine editor. Except life is funny, things never worked out that way. Stranded in my Master's English program at a prestigious university I was extremely unhappy with my life. I decided to drop out of the M.A. program and try to find what I wanted to do.So imagine my surprise when I stumbled on the notion of self-publishing. I ran the gambit of doubt. I doubted my talent, my business acumen, my product. When I realized how much money I would need to become officially published I panicked. Well, I threw a hissy fit. "I can't do this" I stammered to family and friends, "I can't afford it and my product will look so bootleg," tumbled out of my mouth. After a mini prep talk a source guided me to a grant specifically for emerging poets/writers. I was completely thrilled. Most guides and family members tried to tell me to take out a loan, but I did not want to deal with the hassle or debt and finding another part-time seemed difficult, with the other priorities and commitments.I felt so blessed to have the opportunity to apply for the grant. With a re-newed spirit I made a promise to myself. Always go the last quarter mile of the race. Never under any circumstances give up. No matter the money situation or if someone does not embrace my idea I've realized that almost getting to the finish line will never help me succeed. Even though it sounds corny and quite obvious, surprisingly it was never obvious to me. Now that I decided to stick through no matter what, I'm finding so many different ways to reassess my budget and to redesign my business focus. I'm more on point now than I was before, using this reasoning in other areas of my life. I'm happy to say that my publishing company Imara Ushairi has become a real business. My idea's are coming to fruition.

Passion, Purpose and Profit

Your No-Fail, Winning Combination

There's a lot of talk about business and passion these days. As it concerns Indie Business, it's mostly about how passion gives you an edge and how, without it, you will either fail in business or be miserable even if your business is successful. Passion is undoubtedly important. When I first started making soap and beauty products, I was driven obsessively and solely by my passion for all things natural and fragrant.

Blue_sky_with_clouds

No matter how long or hard I had worked at my job, I came home and made something that I could rub on my body. My passion consumed me, but eventually, more than passion began to drive my efforts. I began to entertain the possibility that I could use my passion to help people discover handmade beauty products by selling them in my own retail store. This came to pass when I opened Maria Grace Bath & Aromatherapy Shop. But I quickly discovered that my passion-filled, pie-in-the sky thinking, however endearing and sincere, was not enough.

The Passion: Necessary, But Not Enough

Soon after I opened my store, while I continued to love making products, the excitement of making money soon wore off. I needed to figure out how to make a profit. I couldn't afford much advertising and the Internet had yet to prove itself as a viable retail tool. Yet, I was surrounded by retailers on all sides who were making money. How were they doing it? I had at least as much passion as they did. What was their secret? I learned that, as valuable as passion is, it's not enough to sustain a business.

Passion is important, yes. But that's the easy part. Everyone has passion for something, so to spend countless hours each day indulging that passion is easy. That's what hobbies are for. But as a business owner, passion will only carry you so far.

I discovered that if I pursued my passion at the expense of all else, my business would go straight down the tubes. Which it eventually did.

Indulge your passion! But if you also want to turn that passion into college savings, retirement funds and mortgage payments, you have to move beyond simply doing what you love. You have to channel your passion very specifically. You have to shape it and mold it into a purpose that transcends the passion itself.

The Purpose: Where Passion Takes Flight

When passion is channeled toward the fulfillment of a specific purpose, it takes on new meaning. The purpose begins to direct and guide the passion in ways that create business opportunities that rarely materialize when passion alone is the driving factor.

If passion is a raging river, then purpose is the course it takes.

One of my life's passions is inspiring and encouraging women to maximize their potential as Indie Business owners. Other passions include indulging in as many luxurious beauty products as possible, and building relationships with women who enjoy being business owners and home managers like me.

I have channeled my passions into purposeful activities: Indie Business Radio, Indie Beauty Network, etc. These activities give my passion life, vigor and value beyond myself. They channel my passions in ways that yield fruit.

And I'm not the only one. Take Pam Keller, and IBN member who discovered a passion for animals, particularly goats. Pam, a wife and mother of three, decided that she wanted to pursue her passion for goats by raising them on land she and her husband own in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Now, there would have been nothing wrong with raising goats just for the passion of it, but Pam decided she wanted to channel her passion for goats in a specific way. Namely, she wanted to figure out a way to make the goats pay for themselves.

This became Pam's purpose. Figure out a way to enjoy her passion for goats without adversely impacting the family budget.

After weighing several options, which included raising goats for their meat, Pam settled on using their milk to make soap.

The Passion: Goats
The Purpose: Use their milk to make handmade soap

Once you combine passion with purpose, it's time to move on to profit.

The Profit: The Icing On The Cake

Pam's goal of pursuing her passion first, and then her purpose of making her passion pay for itself, quickly graduated to the next logical thing: making a profit.

This is the hardest part, because if you don't want to make a profit, you don't really have to sweat the details. You can just enjoy your passion, and maybe try to make enough money so that it at least pays for itself. Like how Pam started out. But if you want to make a profit, you curb your passion so that it does not get in the way of ensuring that it makes you more money than it costs you.

I spoke with an Indie a few weeks ago who loves to make herbal beauty products. As a licensed herbalist, Shelly (not her real name) creates herb-based salves for relief of everything from dry skin to a stuffy nose. Shelly came to me for business coaching because she couldn't figure out why her products, which worked well and were reasonably priced, were not selling enough to make a profit. Shelly was pursuing her passion and purpose to help people be healthy through the use of herbal remedies. She was having fun, but she was not making a profit.

What could the problem be, she asked me?

I pinpointed it quickly. Shelly's passion for herbs and making herbal products was getting in the way of making profitable business decisions. She had far too many products in her line. Some of them sold well. But others sold intermittently at best. Additionally, every time Shelly heard about a new ingredient or a fun new way to package something, she would divert valuable resources to making these new things. The time and money Shelly was devoting to passionately making new things was not being used wisely to sell the things she already had in her line.

Shelly is now in the process of trimming down her line so that she can focus energy on selling a lot of a few things instead of selling a little bit of a lot of things.

This pruning process is difficult, but it's necessary. When it's completed, Shelly will still have her passion. But it will be channeled so her purposes can be accomplished in ways that generate a fair profit.

What about you?

Has your passion for what you do gotten in the way of making a profit in your business? Have you learned to curb your passion in order to make better business decisions? Share your insights in the comments section, and don't forget to share your website link so we can find out more about you and your passion.

In today's business world, every Tina, Debra, and Suzie is an entrepreneur. With the convenience and accessibility of the internet, it's never been easier to carve out a business presence on the world wide web. With that said, there has to be something that sets those super-successful businesses apart from the mediocre ones. What's that thing? Branding.Branding is the ongoing development of the perceived value of an individual or business, in relation to its competitors, as viewed by an audience -and whether you have a small startup or a mega-franchise or are simply trying to market yourself, branding should be at the forefront of your mind. There are two main types of branding- personal and professional- and both types are extremely crucial in the success of an individual or business. Here are some tips that can apply to the development of both types of branding.Image should not be contradictory- you cannot market yourself or your business as one thing but speak, dress, and act as another. It's important that you stay true to who you are and what you want to portray. As long as you are honest with yourself and others, it won't be difficult to maintain consistency in branding your business and/or yourself.Brand should be easily accessible and identifiable- if you google your name or your business' name what would you find? If there is any information there at all, is it accurate and consistent? If you are less than satisfied with the results, be sure to do what you can to correct it. There are plenty of articles out there that help you figure out how to successfully use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to build your personal and professional brand.Be consistent in your brand development- you cannot expect to build or change your brand overnight. Branding is an ongoing process that should be taken seriously and given much thought. Create a daily, weekly, or monthly block of time for you to focus on branding. Once you find a method (or methods) that work for you, stick with them and monitor how effective they are.Be careful where you leave your footprint (mouse-print)- although the internet is a great tool to build your business and your brand, it can also prove to be a place where images are destroyed. Pay attention to the pictures you let circulate, the comments you leave on others' blogs, and the social networks you become a member of. With the click of a mouse, anyone can learn all about how you spent Spring Break '07 in Cancun. If it fits into your image and brand, then there's no problem. But if it doesn't, it can put a damper on the way others see you.Personal and Professional branding, if used correctly, can really give you the competitive edge as you grow your business. It's important that you take the time to carefully develop and maintain a brand that will prove to be a positive addition on your journey to success.

Ah, I've discovered a new pastime - twittering. I twitter to my tweeps, keeping them updated on the details of my life/business life. Let me tell you, it's some experience. What is Twitter? From Wikipedia:Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts, ranging up to 140 characters long.Who actually uses Twitter? (also from Wikipedia)Enterprise use* Businesses such as Cisco Systems, Whole Foods Market, Dell, Zappos.com, and Comcast use Twitter to provide updates to customers.* The Los Angeles Fire Department put the technology to use during the October 2007 California wildfires.* NASA used Twitter to break the news of discovery of what appeared to be water ice on Mars by the Phoenix Mars Lander.* News outlets such as CNN and the BBC have also started using Twitter to disseminate breaking news or provide information feeds for sporting events.* Several 2008 U.S. presidential campaigns use Twitter as a publicity mechanism, including that of Democratic Party nominee Barack Obama.[9]. The Nader/Gonzalez campaign uses Twitter and Google Maps to show real-time updates of their ballot access teams across the country.* The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering is using Twitter to relay information to students. The point seems to be that Twitter is good for your business. But before you jump on and start Twittering your life away, here are some tips for using Twitter for your biz. (By no means is this a complete list.)5 Tips for Using Twitter for Business1. Use Twitter to announce a new blog post, a new article or a press release2. Brand yourself - Post tips or tidbits of information that will brand you as an expert in your field3. Network - select and follow people that you think might be interested in your product or service or find like minded people with which to collaborate4. Post links to interesting websites, articles or podcasts5. Post time sensitive promotions such as one day sales, or contestsNote: It helps if you respond to other's tweets once in a while. Twitter, is a two-way street - if you are constantly just posting information and not responding to other's postings, that makes it difficult to form "soft" relationships via Twitter. These are just a few ways that I, as a newbie, have used Twitter. I'm sure you can think of a few more!Follow me at www.twitter.com/neosoulsister

Call to Action: Get Moving in Your Life

Have you ever dreamed up the best business or money-making idea, but it never seemed to get off the ground? I’m not speaking about the fact that it wasn’t a success. I am talking about if you never put your idea into action!! Or, you have a weightloss goal of 40 lbs in six months only to find that six months have passed with a gain of 20 lbs more? I’m guessing that is because you didn’t put your mind and body into action!! The dictionary’s first definition of action is listed below:ac•tion - 1. The state or process of acting or doing. The state or process of acting or doing!! If you sit on your bump for months and days after you first had your idea, then you are not in the state of action or doing!I’m sure you mentally go over the list of the following excuses as to why you do not execute the majority of your goals. The biggest problem is that the paralysis isn’t only limited to our financial sector of life, but it dominates in plenty of others as well. Please review how far analysis paralysis actually reaches out into our lives, hobbies, and goals.• I can’t start my business because I do not have enough money.• I think if I wait for better time then my business will be more successful.• I will start my diet when I get a raise, and I will be able to afford the healthy food.• I will take a vacation once I win the lottery. Those are only examples, but I am sure you can see that those statements are very limiting in our lives. They all present very valid reasons, but they can lead to paralysis. You never call yourself to action because you continue to wait for the perfect timing to move forward. Bill Gates of Microsoft fame has to be the Golden Boy of Action. He released several versions of Windows in their most complete format as possible, and he continued to tweak them long after release. Why do you think there are so many Service Packs and updated platforms (95,98,ME,XP, & Vista) to date. I believe it’s because Mr. Gates had not released his “perfect” visionary form of Windows. I honestly thank Bill for going forward with his idea instead of waiting for the “perfect” time or finished product. If he had waited, our first working version of Windows may only be coming onto the market in 2014. Who knows? If you have an idea, a desire to have a better body, or the need to take a vacation, then I believe you should act now!!1. Lay claim to your idea, goals, and dreamsa. I want to start a small café in my neighborhoodb. I want to lose 40 lbs before my birthday.c. I want to take my family to Disneyland.2. Plan, Plan, Plan & Act, Act, Act.a. I am writing a business plan for my café businessb. I am attending workout class at the YMCA every other day.c. I am saving an extra $60 per week for our vacation.3. Remain consistent through the good times and the bad times.a. Even though I have been denied twice for a biz loan, I will continue to submit my business plan and loan apps for review.b. I’ve lost 23 lbs before I hit a plateau two weeks ago, but I have not missed a workout or ate fast food.c. I had to use $80 from our vacation fund for a family emergency, but we are still going to Disneyland.4. Enjoy your accomplishments!a. My loan was approved, and my café will open for business next month.b. I’ve lost 60 lbs, and I’ve ran my first 2k race last week.c. We enjoyed our trip to Disneyland, and we are making plans for our next vacation.Stop limiting yourself and start living the life that you deserve! Begin claiming good things and speak them into reality for yourself. Once you plan and take action, you will see how things manifest over time because you remained consistent. Enjoy yourself, your life, & your loved ones because you only have one shot at this lifetime!!Much love,Nikki

Conducting surveys is a powerful tool for businesses, colleges, hospitals and any other entity that interacts with people. Websites use surveys to grasp the perception of visitors. Private schools use surveys to understand the needs and expectations of their students' parents. Magazines use surveys to measure their readers' loyalty and tastes. When designed properly, a survey can yield invaluable data. But, creating successful surveys requires an understanding of how people think, absorb information, process data and communicate. Below, you'll learn 4 tips for creating general surveys that can make the information you gather more valuable.Tip #1: Choose Words CarefullyWords communicate precise meanings. However, we often take for granted that others will infer our meaning even when we use words incorrectly. When creating a survey, it's imperative that you use precise language. For example, a question about employees' feelings toward a certain office protocol may use "might," "can," or "may" interchangeably. But, these words can imply different meanings to people. Choose the words you include in survey questions carefully.Tip #2: Eliminate Grey Area For True/False QuestionsUsing true/false questions can yield interesting data. But, that data may not be useful if the questions are crafted poorly. The key to using true/false questions is to eliminate any grey area. That is, the answer to a question must be either true or false for the answer to have any meaning. There should be no exceptions.Tip #3: Use Uniformity In Number ScalesNumber scales should be a part of most general surveys. They force the respondent to think clearly about their choice. Often, a person's instinctive feeling will prompt them to answer. But, they'll hesitate before making their selection. When you use number scales throughout your surveys, make sure the scales are the same for each of the questions. For example, if you're going to use a scale from 1 to 5, keep the scale uniform for the entire survey. Plus, if 5 reflects a "positive" choice (attractive, robust, flexible, etc.), keep 5 reserved for positive responses throughout. Uniformity is crucial for number scales to be effective.Tip #4: Open-Ended Multiple ChoiceMultiple choice questions come in different flavors. If you're using closed multiple choice questions (that is, those without an "Other" option), make sure that the questions you're asking can be answered resolutely with one of the choices you've provided. In other words, the answers should address every possibility.Open-ended multiple choice questions can provide insight that may be otherwise missed. For example, if you're asking customers how they first heard about your business, provide options such as friend or family, website, newspaper advertising and radio ads. But, also allow for the possibility that your customer may have discovered your business through another channel. Provide an "Other" option and ask them to explain. Their response may make you aware of other marketing possibilities for your business.Leveraging Variety For Survey SuccessEffective surveys use a variety of different question types to obtain valuable information. Using a blend of multiple choice, true/false and number scaled questions can encourage a broad spectrum of useful data. Your surveys should include other question types, as well. Demographic questions, constant sum questions and rating scales can all be employed to extract a diverse collection of data. By contrast, using any question type exclusively will usually yield information that isn't well-defined and therefore, of negligible value.Well-designed surveys require an appreciation for the psychology of how people process information and communicate feedback. Anyone can throw together a mishmash of questions and call it a survey. But, planning a survey that successfully compels useful information that can be leveraged is a discipline that comes from experience, analysis and expert advice.

Monday, June 16, 2008Evaluate UCurrent mood: enlightened~TNGAs I stroll through my page and see some of the desperate women out there, I see why some men treat us the way they do. Not saying it's right, but if most of the women project that perception, then that's their reality. Some of the Default pics that you all have of yourself are degrading and desperate. One of the top things on a woman's "To Do List" of life is to be Happily married to the Man of their dreams. And some people's dreams are different. But for the chics that kept reading (and have some of the same values that I do) this far and didn't catch an attitude because of this blog, I am talking to you. I am in no ways the best at everything or a perfect person. I have fall short in many situations. But one thing I can definitely say is that I have learned lessons along the way. That's why I was lead to write this. Sharing positive and uplifting inspirations is just something I love to do.... Every situation in life we encounter is a Test. If you don't pass the test, you take the test again. If you never pass the test, you never grow into being a positive, mature, and productive individual. That's what We all need to understand. Half of the women & men on this wonderful networking resource, really are successful and trying to help others achieve that same goal. But some of the women & men have alterior motives. Their intention is to steal and destroy. A snake in the grass (whether it is a man or woman) gives major signs that they are no good. We just choose to ignore them. Whatever perception a person gives, is another persons reality. Someone told this girl I knew, that very same sentence. The energy you place out is the energy that comes back to you. Your character and reputation are constantly fighting a battle against each other (similar to your Flesh & your Soul). Your character weighs more because at the end of it all that is what will be judged. Reputation is what you do...and what you do follows you. Character is who you are and how you treat others. Some women are so thirsty and desperate for a man or for some attention, they don't realize what they are attracting and how they are killing themselves softly. Ladies, do a thorough Introspection of yourself. Evaluate you and your goals and what you want for your life. Until you evaluate you, your situation may never turn out in your favor.

Anyone familiar with the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild knows of their longstanding dedication to the soapmaking industry. I have been associated with the Soap Guild as a member, keynote speaker and/or sponsor since 1998 when founder Barbara Bobo of Woodspirits hosted the first "conference" in her Ohio back yard. So when we were asked to create a promotional video to highlight their 2008 conference, we knew it had to be special.

It's amazing how we condensed nearly 6 hours of sizzling raw video footage down to just under 4 minutes. The speakers, the action, the movement, the FUN! To make sure you don't miss out next year, head on over to the Soap Guild website right now, and get the goods on the 2009 conference in Palm Springs.

What do you think?

I love what JoAnn Hines, the Packaging Diva, said at the end of the video: "It's amazing to me that people could be so creative with just soap!" Don't you agree? Were you there? Did you have a blast? Tell us about it!
